When Nathan Bankert, director of the upcoming Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) spring musical, chose “Oklahoma!” for the 2019 production, he wanted to showcase the talent of the students in the cast, but he also wanted the school to perform a classic. “I wanted to pick (a show) that was well known in the community,” noted Bankert. “I hear a lot of people in the community saying (it’s one of their favorites), so I am hoping we have a great turnout.” “Oklahoma!” will be staged at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28; 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 1; and 2 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, at the school, 4033 E. before its 1907 rise to statehood, “Oklahoma!” revolves around the romance of brash cowboy Curly McLain, played by Chad Hughes, and a feisty farmer’s daughter named Laurey Williams, played by Sierra Anastasi. Ian Hershey portrays Jud Fry, the hired hand at the farm of Laurey’s Aunt Eller, played by Sarah Houck. The story is told against a backdrop of rising conflict between ranchers and farmers who are trying to fence in the range. A subplot involves a romantic triangle featuring Will Parker, played by Elijah Jenkins; Ado Annie Carnes, played by Sophia Weaver; and a traveling peddler, played by Kolby Bills. The cast also includes Grace Martin, who plays Gertie Cummings. The show’s romantic story lines have caused some fun and complicated moments for the actors. “There are … scenes (where) it’s hard to look each other in the eyes and say these things See Oklahoma! pg 5

Jim Hertzler, chair of the committee of Ephrata- and Akron-area churches that are planning the group’s 15th annual sportsmen’s banquet, reached back into his own hunting history when discussing the topic of this year’s event. “(Speaker Steve Sorensen) will talk
about hunting boots on the ground,” said Hertzler. “Not (hunting deer) from tree stands, but walking and stalking.” Hertzler noted that he has hunted deer from both locations. “I enjoy hunting from tree stands, but I didn’t always,” he said. “I used to walk and go slow and keep my eyes open, and it’s a different approach to deer hunting.”
Last year, due to the demand for tickets, the event was expanded to two nights, and that format will be in place this year as well. The family-friendly banquet will be held on Thursday and Friday, March 7 and 8, at Yoder’s Restaurant, 14 Tower Road, New Holland. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and a family-style dinner including chicken and ham balls will be served at 6:15 p.m. Each dinner will include a number of door prizes.

Sorensen spoke previously at a banquet sponsored by the group, and Hertzler remembered him well. “Steve is a very practical guy,” said Hertzler, who recalled that the speaker had previously discussed hunting moose in Alaska on a budget. This year, Sorensen will present “The Path to Your Next Mature Whitetail,” drawing on his work for magazines that focus on deer hunting. Sorensen will discuss hunters who bring home especially large bucks and utilize a special test to help audience members discover the locations of the biggest whitetails. Sorensen is an award-winning outdoor writer whose column, “The Everyday Hunter,” appears in a number of western Pennsylvania newspapers. He is also a popular speaker who presents programs on wild turkey hunting and eastern coyote hunting, among others. Sorensen is also a believer in Christ, which is one reason he was chosen to speak at the event. “Our goal is to introduce people to Jesus Christ through their interest in the outdoors,” noted Hertzler, who added that Sorensen will end his talk with his personal testimony. According to Hertzler, about 14 vendors will be on hand with displays when the doors open. Most of the vendors represent local businesses that sell hunting and fishing equipment. One taxidermist will be on hand, and one vendor who sells jewelry will take part. “There are women who come to the meal, and (the jewelry) is something
for them (to see),” said Hertzler, who added that husbands who attend sometimes purchase a piece of jewelry for their wives. The banquet is known for the door prizes that are given away during the meal. This year, Hertzler said that about 15 door prizes have been gathered for each event. Door prizes, which are donated by local businesses, will be designated for junior hunters ages 8 to 16 or as elite prizes, which may be won by anyone in attendance. Elite prizes generally include rifles, muzzleloaders, and bows. About a dozen Ephrata and Akron churches are involved in organizing the event. A limited number of tickets are available for each evening. Tickets may be purchased for a per-person fee by calling 717-733-2797. Organizers request that tickets be purchased by Friday, March 1. 81st-floor office in the South Tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, when Flight 11 struck the North Tower. When told by security that the South Tower was secured, he returned to his office in time to see United Airlines Flight 175 heading for his window. “He will vividly remind everyone of what we experienced as a nation and our resiliency,” said Jakubowski, who added that Prainmath will also expound on how God was his source of survival and rescue. ROFM is a faith-based, Christ-centered discipleship program for men who struggle with addictions. Jakubowski said that some of ROFM’s current students will give their testimonies at the banquet, and students will perform a song or two. When Jakubowski joined ROFM in July 2018, the ministry was in the process of making a change by preparing to move to a former bank call center at 113 Rancks Church Road, Blue Ball. The location is currently in the process of being remodeled for the ministry. Currently, ROFM can house up to 15 men in buildings located along Route 23 in Blue Ball. The new building will be able to accommodate 50 men, and although ROFM may eventually house that many clients, it is not the initial goal of the See Dinner pg 10

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Jakubowski met Praimnath in 2003, when Jakubowski had been a student in Teen Challenge for about five months. “I was trying to figure out who God is,” said Jakubowski, who said that he came to the program as an argumentative atheist. When Praimnath spoke at a Teen Challenge chapel gathering, Jakubowski and his fellow students were riveted by Praimnath’s tale of surviving the 9/11 World Trade Center attack. “When Stanley came and started to tell his story, you could hear a pin drop,” said Jakubowski. “He told his heroic and faithful (account of escaping) out of the offices that the plane actually hit.” Following the chapel meeting, Jakubowski introduced himself to Praimnath and shared his own story. “I said, ‘If your faith got you through (9/11), it can get me through Teen Challenge,’” said Jakubowski. “He said (that) I was absolutely right,” shared Jakubowski. “He said, ‘Stay the course.’” The pair stayed in touch over the years, and when Jakubowski was considering speakers, he contacted his friend. “I called Stanley without a lot of notice,” said Jakubowski. “I said, ‘The Lord put you on my heart (for this event). Are you available?’” Praimnath responded that he would make it work. “He is such a humble guy,” said Jakubowski. Praimnath was evacuated from his

PCA&D senior Annie Troller’s illustration “Through a Child’s Eyes” was announced as the Destination Garden Spot Village spring 2019 magazine cover art during an unveiling ceremony.
Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) senior illustration students joined members of the Garden Spot Village Art Guild and staff on Jan. 17 for the unveiling of the Destination Garden Spot Village spring 2019 magazine cover. PCA&D senior Annie Troller submitted the winning illustration, “Through a Child’s Eyes.” The unveiling was a culmination of hours of research, planning and design. In September, Christina Hess and fellow instructor Bill Dussinger brought their senior illustration students to Garden Spot Village to experience the community and learn about the project. Scott Miller, chief marketing officer, and Brandon Adams, graphic designer, presented the vision for the spring 2019 issue as a recap of Garden Spot Village’s envisioned future. They shared the five goals for the envisioned future, fielded questions and provided feedback on thumbnail concepts the students prepared for the day. In October, 20 students submitted covers for consideration. After a careful review of the submissions, the creative team selected Troller’s digital painting. The spring/summer 2019 Destination Garden Spot Village will be released in March. For more information about PCA&D, readers may call 717-396-1032 or 800689-0379 or visit www.pcad.edu.

“Oklahoma!” from pg 1 because we are such good friends,” noted Weaver. “It’s fun because we have all grown up together,” Bills added, noting that most of the actors are veterans of the PVHS stage. “We have relationships with each other that show in our characters.” Bankert agreed, stating, “(The cast members are) such good friends outside (of the show), so when they get together to do a show, it’s … a positive atmosphere.” Choreographer Carolyn Pencheff, who worked on her first show for PVHS in 1982, is delighted to be taking her curtain call with “Oklahoma!” “I have some real dancers,” said Pencheff, referring to Anastasi’s and Hughes’ ballet training, which will be apparent in the “Out of My Dreams”/“Dream Ballet” sequence. “With trained people, we are able to do some things with the ‘Dream Ballet’ that I couldn’t do before, and it will be absolutely beautiful,” she said. Other standout numbers of the more than a dozen in the show will include “Kansas City” and “Oklahoma.” According to Houck, mastering the characters’ accents has been a challenge for the actors. “Sometimes it’s hard to pronounce the words and phrases exactly as they are written in the score,” noted Weaver. Anastasi added that she often had to read the accent written in the script several times before she learned how to pronounce the words so they could be understood, and Bills lamented that he is the only cast member faced with the challenges of a Persian accent. Hershey added that because of the changes in language since the show was written, it can be difficult to keep from laughing during certain scenes. “Some of the things our characters say, we don’t say anymore,” he stated. Because the show is a classic though, many of the actors were familiar with the material. “We are spending less time learning the music and more time on stage presence and that kind of thing,” said Martin. Thinking of audiences, Weaver noted that she hopes those who attend will leave humming the songs. “This is the kind of show that you leave, and the songs imprint on you,” she said. Pencheff said she has choreographed all but about three musicals in the more than three decades she has been involved. She recalled that when she worked on her first show, “The Music Man,” in the spring of 1982, teacher Tom Perella had to take over the lead role just a few days before opening night. “My introduction (to choreographing for PVHS) was teaching Mr. P. how to ‘Shipoopi,’” said Pencheff with a chuckle. Tickets for “Oklahoma!” may be purchased by calling 717-768-5510, ext. 5509, or by emailing Lori_Aleardi@ pequeavalley.org. Tickets will be discounted for students and senior citizens.

number of door prizes will be given away. Molls grew up in Wisconsin, fishing, trapping, and hunting with his father and grandfathers. The experiences prepared him for exploring the wilds of Alaska. Molls attended guide school in Montana and completed a two-year apprenticeship in the Alaskan bush to become a licensed Alaskan big-game hunting guide. For the past 20 years, sportsmen from around the world have followed him through some of the most remote regions of the largest state in pursuit of a variety of native game. Molls, who is married with three daughters, continues to appreciate the rewarding time he spends with nature. He is grateful to be able to share those experiences with others. Santiago noted that auction and door prize items worth a total of $22,000 have been gathered for the event. Among the live auction items will be a Mathews bow, a muzzle loader, and a deer shanty. The Chinese auction will feature a TenPoint crossbow, an Elite compound bow, and a Kids Package Carbon Express Blade Pro. Door prizes will include hunting and fishing gear and the grand prize of a 10 point Nitro crossbow. Santiago explained that the items will be sold or given away throughout the event. “We will sell a (live) auction item, then (announce) a Chinese auction item (winner), and then announce a door prize,” he said. Santiago will also give an update on the ministry, which strives to help men who have been traumatized and who have turned to abusing chemicals or developed other kinds of addictions. RTCM aims to support clients in finding healing and developing healthy coping mechanisms. “The purpose is to bring men out of their addiction and heal them

Sometimes genealogist Darvin Martin finds himself in the role of scientist. More specifically, Martin has found himself becoming well-versed in genetic science. He has developed an understanding of DNA and how it is passed from generation to generation. With the advent of basic genetic testing available through companies like Ancestry.com and 23andMe.com, a whole new aspect of genealogy has opened up. “There are huge benefits of DNA testing, but they lie in the deeper testing - not the basic ethnicity testing - which can reveal relatives,” Martin said. “You can share family trees and see how you connect.” There are some myths about genetic testing, however, and Martin hopes to dispel them during his presentation “The New DNA Reality: Forging the Path Between Discovery and Privacy,” which he will give on Friday, March 29, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, as part of the 40th Lancaster Family History Conference. “Everyone assumes their DNA is private, but that’s not the case,” remarked Martin, conference committee chair. He explained that while a particular combination of DNA might be unique to a specific person, the components of those genes may be accessed through other avenues, as they come from their parents, who got their DNA from their respective parents, and so forth. “The way that we think about DNA is

Fourth-graders in Emily Frank’s social studies classes at Salisbury Elementary School have spent the school year learning about Pennsylvania, including the state’s regions, government, and important figures. The students recently participated in a contest to create the cover of a birthday card for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Lauren Coblentz won the contest. Her design featured the Liberty Bell, the state flower, an outline of Pennsylvania, and a keystone. Lauren also included the inscription from the Liberty Bell, “Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land Unto All the Inhabitants Thereof.”

an illusion because nature does not work that way,” Martin said. During his presentation, Martin will discuss two recent cases in which DNA from genealogical sites helped law enforcement officers trace and confirm the identity of perpetrators of crimes committed long ago. Additionally, Martin will address the concept of ethnicity and the uncertainty of genetic testing for ethnicity. “It’s a false assumption that you can quantify ethnicity. Ethnicity is not just genetics; it’s also history and culture,” Martin asserted. Martin explained that because of the way genes are randomly distributed, a pair of biological siblings might test as having genetic markers similar to people in completely different parts of the world. One way in which testing is helpful, however, is in men from Western European backgrounds. By tracing Y chromosomes, it is possible to see how surnames have changed over time. Martin related a story about two family groups in different states that discovered they share a Y chromosome and thus a common ancestor. It turned out that the last name of Carpenter was the English translation of the original German surname of Zimmerman. Martin’s presentation may be attended in person, or folks may watch it online live or at a later date. There will be an array of other presentations, seminars, discussions, and field trips offered before and during the Lancaster Family History Conference. The conference will examine how legal records are a helpful resource for understanding the details of one’s ancestors’ lives. Pennsylvania has a collection of legal records starting as early as 300 years ago. Genealogist Judy G. Russell will present the keynote address, “No Person Shall Gallop Horses in the Streets: Using Court Records to Tell the Stories of Our Ancestors’ Lives,” on Saturday, March 30. Russell has worked as a reporter, writer, legal investigator, defense attorney, federal prosecutor, and law editor, along with as an adjunct faculty member at Rutgers Law School. During the week of the conference, from Tuesday, March 26, to March 30, registrants may use the LMHS library and archives free of charge. The March 30 sessions will take place

move. Jakubowski will give an update on the status of the move, noting that ROFM hopes to have occupancy by March and to open a thrift store by late spring or early summer. The change will mean ROFM will need more volunteers, especially to help run the thrift store. “We are looking for volunteers for the thrift store (and to serve as) drivers, teachers, and mentors,” said Jakubowski. There is no charge to attend the banquet, but individuals who would like to attend are asked to register to attend by Thursday, March 14, by calling 717-351-5680 or 717-673-2119 or emailing joel@rofm.org. Table sponsorships for the banquet are available for businesses or individuals. A freewill offering will be received. Readers who would like more information about ROFM may visit www.rofm.org. group, which began meeting in November, is sponsored by Calvary Monument Bible Church, located at 1660 Mine Road, Paradise. It meets near the church on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m., and the next meeting will be held on Monday, March 4. The organizers attended a training session in Ephrata for leaders prior to starting the group. BASIS, which is associated with Handi-Vangelism Ministries International, stands for Brothers And Sisters In Support, and the ministry provides support, resources, educational workshops, structured gatherings, and more for bereaved parents. According to Phyllis, the meetings revolve around a discussion topics, such as the holidays or winter, but the agenda is flexible. “If someone is having an issue or a concern is brought up, the conversation will revolve around that,” she explained. “(The meetings are) very welcoming,” added Nancy, who noted that when new members arrive and need to talk about their personal experiences, the leaders can switch gears. Phyllis stated that there is no set curriculum. “If you miss a month, you missed out on the conversation and the sharing, but you don’t have to worry about reading a chapter (in a book),” she said. Phyllis noted that she and Dan are grateful to Nancy for introducing them to BASIS. “After our son, Andy, died, we reached out to pastor Jim Davis at (Calvary Monument to) ask if any other parents had lost children,” she explained. Davis shared the names of Nancy and her husband, Lee, who has since passed away. In early 2017, Nancy asked Phyllis to attend BASIS meetings that are held at a church in Akron. The two began making the monthly trip to Akron, and they found the sessions helpful. However, neither relished the nighttime drive to Akron. “There are so many people in (this area) who have lost children, we thought it would be beneficial to have a group down this way,” said Phyllis. Because fathers and mothers may grieve differently, BASIS has styled the support group atmosphere to be comfortable for all involved. Speaking is not required, but those who wish to are encouraged to share feelings. “Women are (typically) more into support groups,” noted Nancy. “Men (generally) don’t want to talk about their feelings.” When Phyllis began attending BASIS with Nancy, Dan became interested. Phyllis recalled that when she came home, he would ask questions about the meetings. “I told him it was hard to explain, and he just needed to come (along),” Phyllis said. When Dan attended, he met a few other fathers who were attending, and he is hoping to see men join the Paradise group. In addition to training, BASIS provides free leadership support through BASIS director Don Allison, as well as a newsletter, meeting topics, and lists of resources. In addition, BASIS holds two yearly countywide gatherings, including a spring breakfast and a summer picnic. BASIS honors the deceased children of members by printing their names with birth and death dates quarterly in the newsletter. Nancy also described a portable Wall of Remembrance, which includes the children’s names, photos, and other information. The wall is displayed during the picnic and the breakfast. Readers who would like more information about BASIS may visit www.hvmi.org. Individuals who are interested in joining the Paradise BASIS support group may call Calvary Monument Bible Church at 717-442-8161.

Caleb Williams of Narvon is helping to design a life-saving device as his senior capstone project at Cedarville University. Williams, a senior mechanical engineering major, is working on the project with four other seniors. The students’ primary focus is the area of the neck that is above the clavicle (collarbone) and below the mandible (jaw). In severe traumatic injuries to this area, the common carotid artery and jugular veins bleed profusely. When these injuries are left untreated, the lack of blood flow to the brain proves fatal. Sufficient pressure must be applied to the injury, but if the correct amount of pressure is not applied at the right location, the neck laceration may continue to bleed or the airway may be constricted, leading to brain damage, suffocation and possibly death. The students’ finished product will most likely resemble three quarters of a rubberized doughnut that will be placed over the laceration to stop the bleeding. Attached to this “doughnut” will be an inflatable bladder or mechanical device
