Factory To Open Brave Kids Learning Center BY ANN MEAD ASH
efore the state was shut down in March of 2020, the four staff members at the Together Community Center (TCC) who work with children from birth to sixth grade were feeling the pinch of not having enough space to meet with students or families. In addition, the four were spread out in the building without easy access to each other. According to Karla Neff, director of Pequea Valley elementary advocacy at The Factory Ministries, the issues became more problematic when the first shutdown occurred and children who attend Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) schools began to attend classes online. “We weren’t having programming at the school, but the need for academic support was rising,” said Neff. “Engagement was low for a lot of students, especially at-risk students.” In fact, even though PVSD quickly made online learning available, about 25% of students were not able to engage

virtually. The need for space where students could be served academically became a significant issue. Programming to help underresourced learners was available, but the spaces at TCC where help could be offered were in need of renovation. In April 2020, several entities - PVSD, Community Action Partnership (CAP), the PPL Foundation, and individuals and businesses from the Paradise-area community - joined together to sponsor the remodeling of two classrooms, which would be connected by a doorway and would be called Brave Kids Learning Center. The first room would become offices for the staff members who engage with children from birth to sixth grade. The individual offices would be large enough for meetings with students and families, while offering privacy and confidentiality. The second room, which Neff calls the family room, is larger and conducive to clubs and other activities, including structured activities and meeting time for families utilizing The Factory’s family crisis housing.
Pequea Valley School District students take part in activities at the new Brave Kids Learning Center, which was created from two classrooms in the former Paradise Elementary School.

Girls on the Run Lancaster is unveiling a spring curriculum that can be used virtually or in person. Coaches are needed to help girls benefit from this developmental program.
INSIDE THIS ISSUE
Carrie Johnson, executive director with Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster, wants to make it clear that the program is open to all girls in the age groups it serves. “Any girl can participate,” said Johnson. “We want to remove all limitations, whether financial, physical, or emotional. We want to remove those so that any girl can benefit.” In accordance with that goal, the spring 2021 program has been

Amazing Archer To Speak At Sportsman Dinner

Jaime Santiago, executive director and founder of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), first heard of Matt Stutzman from Matt’s cousin, Steve Stutzman. “(Steve) said, ‘Maybe you should have my cousin who is a professional archer (speak at your sportsman banquet). He was born without arms.’” Santiago was stunned. “I was like, ‘What?’” recalled Santiago. Now, having heard Matt speak at a previous RTCM banquet, Santiago has invited the award-winning archer back for the 2021 events. Matt, who is a Guinness World Record holder, Team USA Paralympian, and Paralympic Silver medalist, will speak at the RTCM sportsman banquets at the PA Auction Center, 1141 Wea Wit St., East Earl, on Tuesday, March 23, and Wednesday, March 24. Each night, doors will open at 5 p.m., and the buffet-style meal, which will be catered by Shady Maple, will begin at 5:30 p.m. Matt’s birth parents were overwhelmed by his disability, but adoptive parents Leon and Jean Stutzman embraced those challenges, guiding him to overcome obstacles with a “can do” attitude that encouraged Matt to try anything he wanted to do. His interest in archery was sparked by his desire to hunt with his father, not knowing the sport would become his life’s passion. Matt went on to win a medal at the 2012 Paralympics in London and to take part in the 2016 games as well as the 2017 U.S. Outdoor Target Nationals against an ablebodied field of competitors. In addition to Matt’s talk,

speech-language pathology at Penn State University will be supported by the scholarship, and recipients will be offered externships at Schreiber, an option that the organization expects to help it recruit and hire more minority candidates for therapy positions. Schreiber president James DeBord has led the creation of several initiatives committed to reducing disparities in care and to fostering an organization that better reflects the diverse populations it serves. These include connecting with national associations representing professionals of color to expand its hiring pool, conducting outreach in local school districts to affirm the professional aspirations of young people, strengthening clinical affiliations with historically black colleges and universities, and drawing on job-training programs that are equipped to attract people of color into every department and to its management team. “Throughout our history, Schreiber has always tried to provide services to some of the most vulnerable children in our community,” DeBord said. “Our mantra is we will

GOTR from pg 1 changed to accommodate COVID-19 restrictions. “We’ve adapted our program to make it totally safe and flexible for girls and coaches,” explained program director Jennifer West, who noted that the organization allows participants to connect with their friends in person or virtually. A new virtual curriculum was written to match inperson lessons, and the program has eliminated shared materials by providing each girl with her own journals, hand sanitizer, and a cinch sack for storage. Masking and social distancing in compliance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines are followed. Team members meet in person when they can, at their school

if possible, or in parks, at churches, or in community buildings. West explained that if schools close, a virtual practice can be held, with the lesson presented virtually. West stated that what has not changed is the lesson content. GOTR’s goals are to promote good choices for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living among girls. “They still get the same great lessons about practicing empathy and standing up for themselves and others, and we still take part in a community impact project,” shared West. GOTR staff members are looking for places for students to meet and are also seeking volunteer team coaches, which are essential to the program. “It’s a unique mentoring opportunity,” said Johnson, who added that the girls who participate are not the only ones who benefit. “It changes a coach’s life,” she noted. West pointed out that coaches need not be runners. “Men, women, college students, and high school students (can be coaches),” said West, who added that having a heart to help girls grow up with self-esteem is key. “You have to have a desire to
help the girls and have meaningful conversations,” explained West. “Be a positive role model, be silly, and play fun games that’s what our coaches do.” West added that training materials for volunteer coaches are online and self-paced. “We provide the curriculum, all the materials, and support to get them set up for a successful season,” she stated. Johnson added that girls are especially in need of GOTR programming during these unusual times. “Seventy-nine percent of our girls are experiencing feelings of loneliness and depression as a result of the pandemic,” said Johnson. “ We need our coaches to lead now more than ever.” West agreed. “(The girls) need the social interaction with friends in a safe environment, and that’s what GOTR is,” she said. “GOTR is a safe space where girls can gather and truly belong,” Johnson stated. Registration for the spring season will open on Monday, March 1, and the season will begin on Monday, March 29. Readers who wish to register a girl or volunteer may visit www.gotrlancaster.org. That’s what is making the (Brave Kids Learning Center) happen.” Looking forward, Neff is hoping to start a mentorship program that can utilize the family room space after school. “We want to get kids in the building with whatever precautions we need to take,” she said. “We needed that

ago to talk about things to do in his hometown. Recalling a restaurant customer who came from another Lancaster County town, he said, “(They told us), ‘ We come here because New Holland is (so) active. You have (so much) going on all the time.’” As one of the founders of the New Holland Area Historical Society, Mitch has a particular interest in the past. In addition to the historical society museum, located above the restaurant at 207 E. Main St., he points out the New Holland Band Museum on the second floor of the ELANCO Library and the Swiss Pioneer Preservation Society on Spruce Road. The Kauffman Building, where Lickity Split and the museum are located, is a historical building, which was originally a tavern and later a general store. Mitch is an avid biker. He rode across the continental United States in 1983, and he has taken part in the Pedal to Preserve rides to support the Lancaster Farmland Trust that once originated at Garden Spot Village. “New Holland is a great place to bike ride,” said Mitch. “You can do 20 miles around here and see lots of countryside.” The greater New Holland area also offers wilderness activities, such as hiking at the Welsh Mountain Nature Preserve in East Earl, which is part of the Lancaster Con-
servancy and Money Rocks County Park in Narvon. Mitch pointed out that the Groff Miller Park off Railroad Avenue is landscaped with trees and bushes that are native to Pennsylvania and that Nolt’s Pond offers fishing and a place to see ducks. company members have wanted a Tac for quite some time, but that the fire company began diligently working toward purchasing one about a year ago. “We figured out this is what we need,” said Amos. “ We were trying to raise money for a new piece for a couple of years, and this made the most sense for the company.” Isaac stated that he hopes the sale will raise $12,000 to $15,000 that the fire company can use to make up for lost revenue. “We normally make
$75,000 from the mud sale, and we have to try to figure out ways to make money in different avenues,” said Isaac, adding, “We welcome donations. Garden Spot held on for a 44-40 win as Pequea fell to 3-8 overall. The Braves’ Sarah Arment and Spot’s Taylor Soehner shared the game’s top scoring honors with 18 points each. Brooke Liney canned a pair of three-point baskets and finished with eight points. The Braves were coming off a 69-19 loss to Eastern York on Saturday, February 13. Mara Weaver’s 18 points led the way for the Golden Knights. She sank four treys and went 4for-4 at the foul line. Arment and Rebecca Cox each scored four points for Pequea. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Devon Colyer, with 22 points, was the top scorer in a 51-41 defeat of Kutztown on Wednesday, February 12 at Kinzers as the PV boys improved to 3-6 on the year. Luke Peifer and Nevin Stoltzfus each scored nine points with
Dustin Huber finished fourth at the 152-pound weight class. Beegle, wrestling through the 126-pound bracket, majored Ethan Missimer of AnnvilleCleona by a 9-1 final. In his next bout, he faced eventual champ Alizaer Alicea who defeated Beegle 4-0. In the consolation semis, Beegle pinned Taylor Gehman of Cedar Crest to earn a trip to the third-place match. He worked Mason Casey of Garden Spot for a library book. Huber’s fourth-place finish involved a pin and a major decision followed by an 8-2 defeat of Cooper Gill. Huber’s next time on the mat would be to face Kevin Ollavaria of Township. After a quarterfinals loss, he is part of the suicide squad as Woolley also battled back to win 1-0 at the third-place match. Also earning third was heavyweight Nate Miller. He made his impact immediately with a pin against John Pacheco of McCaskey. Eventual heavyweight champ Zac Shelley would take down Miller in the semis. But the Pequea senior earned an uncontested win in the semis of the consolation brackets and pinned Caleb Mussmon of Hempfield in the third-place match. Also competing for Pequea, in the tournament that featured only the top eight wrestlers from each weight class, was Luke Brown at 172 pounds. Brown suffered a close 5-4 defeat to Turk Baum of Cocalico. Following a pin by Northern Lebanon’s Clayton Erb, Brown suffered a 7-3 defeat in consolations.

Painting parties - events in which instructors walk participants through the steps of creating specific images - have become popular within the last decade. The classes are a safe way to be adventurous. For people who want to push themselves further, flow painting, also called fluid art, may be the next step. As the name suggests, flow painting involves acrylic paint mixed with Floetrol and applied to a canvas by pouring, rather than a brush. In the United States, Floetrol is a product of PPG Architectural Finishes and was created to improve the flow and leveling of water-based paints, primers, stains, and textured coatings. With flow painting, the resulting image is never assured. “It just does its own thing, and, most of the time, it creates something amazing to look at,” said Sparkle & Spill Fluid Art Creations owner Lacey Werner of East Lampeter Township. Werner discovered fluid art by attending a class at a painting party studio on St. Patrick’s Day in 2018. She and her boyfriend learned from two guest artists who demonstrated how to mix the paint and discussed various techniques. At
home, Werner watched YouTube videos to learn more. “I really like the fluidity of the technique,” Werner commented. “It isn’t a style of art that requires detail and is required to look like something. I like the uniqueness and that I don’t have to really think about it once I pour the paint onto the canvas. The most challenging parts are getting the paint to be the right consistency, knowing how much paint I’ll need, and deciding what colors to use.” Pre-mixed paints can be purchased at craft stores, or artists, like Werner, can mix their own. Canvases can always be reused, but their numbers can soar if artists like the finished products. Werner began to experience that latter phenomenon, so she started looking for homes for her art. She also found another way to be creative with the paint itself. “I had so much dried leftover paint in the bottom of the containers I was using to pour over (canvases) that looked kind of neat on its own, so I decided to start making smaller things like keychains and magnets,” Werner said. For households looking for a creative outlet during yucky days this winter, fluid art may fit the bill. Adult supervision is required for using heat guns to

Students at Veritas Academy recently presented and defended their junior theses. These projects were intended to prepare the students for their capstone senior theses to come in May of their final year and also to equip them with the tools and experience to have productive discussions in all of their adult interactions. In the classical tradition espoused by Aristotle and his contemporaries and predecessors, Veritas Academy places an emphasis on training students to use their powers of speech effectively. The school endeavors to send graduates into the world equipped with the ability to wield language in a way that is clear, respectful,
and powerful for good. To this end, the final stage of education at Veritas is the rhetoric stage, wherein 10ththrough 12th-graders daily put into practice articulating the knowledge and ideas they have acquired and listening to and debating with their peers, their instructors, and others. Each 11th-grade student spent the first semester selecting, researching, and determining his or her stance on a topic of both controversy and consequence. The thesis topics ranged from theological debates to political flashpoints to cultural quandaries. After months of research, the 11th-graders composed

Factory Concludes Book Club, Seeks Donations The Factory Ministries’ Early Learning Team finished hosting its third Braves Book Club series this year. The January Braves Book Club was a four-week series. Each registered family received a book pack including four books, craft supplies, and activities to complete each week. The families then participated in a 20-minute Zoom session each Thursday morning. So far, the Factory Ministries has provided 50 Braves Book Club packs to over 40 children in Pequea Valley. The next Braves Book Club series will be held in April. To learn more about early learning programming, readers may search for “PV Building Braves” on Facebook. Community members who have remained financially stable during the pandemic are invited to support the Factory Ministries by making a donation or donating their stimulus payment. The Factory’s mission is to empower people, connect resources, and build community. Gifts to the organization have directly served the local community throughout the pandemic. To donate, readers may visit https://thefactoryministries .com and click “Give.” Anyone in need in the Pequea Valley community is encouraged to contact the Factory Ministries for assistance. More information is available at the aforementioned website.
