Joyce Hanson has been a volunteer income tax preparer with Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), a free tax preparation service administered by the United Way, for about eight years. Seated at a computer in the VITA Paradise location in the Together Community Center (TCC), Hanson said she hopes area residents who qualify will come in to have their taxes completed for a variety of reasons. “The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) funds (VITA) for accurate returns, but clients (who use VITA services) may pay less tax or get money back,” said Hanson, who explained that completing forms with regard to education and child credits can be daunting. “We are aware of those credits that are complicated to complete,” she noted, adding that because the VITA service is free,

clients will get to keep more of money they get back from the IRS should they rate a return, rather than having to pay a tax preparation service. VITA will offer free tax return preparation at TCC, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Thursdays from 5 to 9 p.m. through Tuesday, April 14. According to Cliff Mast, who has been preparing taxes with VITA at TCC for four years, the Paradise location opened on Jan. 28. “No one could file electronically until (Jan. 27),” said Mast. “A lot of companies aren’t required to get all the information out until the end of (January).” To qualify for free tax preparation, a taxpayer can earn up to $62,000 a year. Mast explained that residents who qualify financially but have rental income or large investments cannot have taxes prepared at the location. See VITA pg 5

Jennie Straub, client services and outreach specialist at Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone, is concerned by the percentage of parents who are unaware of tech abuse in teenage relationships. Some researchers put that statistic at more than 80%, and that spurs Straub to let parents and their children know that it does not have to be that way. During February, which is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, she is especially keen to get the word out about a curriculum Cornerstone offers to both students and parents. Vegetable Garden Class from pg 1 Lifecycles Riders from pg 1

Community members are invited to learn the right way to start a vegetable garden from Penn State Master Gardeners on Saturday, March 7, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The class, designed for beginners, will cover planning the garden, selecting seeds and plants, preparing the soil, maximizing the growing season, navigating weed and pest control, and more. Some vegetable seeds will be available to take home. Registration is required, and

a set fee covers the cost of the class. For details and to register, readers may visit https://extension.psu.edu/vegetable-gardening-for-beginners or call Penn State Extension Registration Services at 877-345-0691. new undertaking for each of the riders and for Lifecycles, a nonprofit mentoring program committed to building young men and women of character through bicycling adventures. Retired United States Air Force Col. Lee DeRemer developed the vision for Lifecycles after seeing a transformation of sorts in his nephews after they had conquered a bicycle trip through Montana and Wyoming together. DeRemer had planned that adventure after his nephews lost their father to cancer as a way to spend time together and provide some of the male leadership they were now missing in their lives. The joy and growth that trip yielded was something DeRemer believed could be replicated on a larger scale. Today, volunteers from Lifecycles lead weekly rides for teenage boys in Landisville, Marietta, and New Holland and for girls in Lititz. More than 80 riders participated in the 2019 season, and more than 160 riders have been a part of Lifecycles since the program began in 2015. A free meal is served, and bicycles, helmets, and shirts are supplied for all participants. Interested individuals are encouraged to sign up ahead of time at www.lifecyclesteam.org if they would like to join a ride. Walk-ins are welcome too. Additionally, Lifecycles organizes annual summer challenge rides for participants. The inaugural challenge ride consisted of nine teenagers and seven adult guides pedaling 290 miles to Niagara Falls. As the organization has grown, so have the challenges, with different trips being planned for riders of various ability levels. Conquering the Trans Am Extreme Challenge Ride will be Micah Clark, 17, of Lancaster; Austin Hillegass, 16, of Lancaster; Zander Malanchuk, 15, of Columbia; Monny Smith, 19, of Mount Joy; Jaerrid Strawser, 16, of Columbia; and AJ Vega, 15, of New Holland. The ride will provide

FOR LIFE’S MINOR EMERGENCIES

ample opportunity for each of the boys to apply Lifecycles’ motto: “Do hard things.” The riders will set out from Sunset Beach, Ore., in June and finish out in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Four adult riders will accompany the youths, and a support and gear (SAG) van driven by two adults will follow the group. Continental breakfasts, lunches prepared by the SAG volunteers, and dinners at restaurants will fuel the riders as they tackle approximately 150,000 feet of climbing - a total equivalent to more than five times the height of Mount Everest. So it is with good reason that when Monny was asked what he believes the most challenging part of the trip will be, he responded, “The hills. I’m not looking forward to the hills.” Training for the Trans Am ride will not only include lots of bicycling for the boys but weekly gym nights led by a personal trainer to cover cross-training. Micah’s mom, Melinda Clark, said that she is grateful for the avenue that Lifecycles has already provided to reinforce positive character traits and for the opportunity this trip will give to the boys to enhance decision-making and risk assessment skills. Albert Vega, AJ’s father and the leader of the New Holland Lifecycles site, is looking forward to hearing his son’s stories. “We have a lot of great conversations after our rides just in the local area,” said Albert. “I’m excited for him to see the country from a different perspective.” Each participant has been tasked with raising $2,000 of the approximately $6,000 per person trip cost to cover food, lodging, and travel expenses. Any business or individual interested in making a tax-deductible donation toward the Trans Am Extreme Challenge Ride may contact DeRemer at 717-586-2511 or director@lifecyclesteam.org or visit www.lifecyclesteam.org.

VITA from pg 1 “We can handle self-employed (clients) as long as there is no inventory,” explained Mast. The Paradise location served 280 clients in 2018 and 320 clients in 2019. Mast hopes 350 area residents benefit from the service in 2020. “Last year, the county saw about 11,000 (clients),” he noted. “We’re looking to reach 11,500 this year.” According to Mast, the average income of VITA clients is $22,000 to $25,000. “We probably only see a quarter of the people who could use our services,” he said. Taxpayers who feel they may qualify for services can call 211 to make an appointment. “Say, ‘I want to get my taxes done by VITA,’” instructed Mast, who added that 211 operators can discuss available tax preparation sites and times. “(The operator will) make sure (the clients bring) last year’s returns with them, their Social Security card, a photo ID, and any and all pertinent information,” said Mast. The Paradise location has eight volunteers, but Mast noted that the site can always use more. “The volunteer process starts back in the summer,” said Mast, noting that VITA holds informational meetings from late August into October and training sessions from November into January. “Everyone takes online testing that is implemented by the IRS,” said Mast, who noted that both basic and advanced certifications are offered. “Volunteers can choose how far they want to go in their accreditation,” he said. All tax forms completed by VITA are reviewed. Mast reported an overall 95% accuracy when returns are reviewed. Mast encourages area tax payers not to wait to make an appointment to have their taxes completed. “Last year, from the end of February through March and early April, we were maxing out our appointments,” he said, adding that those who are familiar with The Factory Ministries, which is housed in TCC, could call the front desk at 717-6879594 to make an appointment. really important for parents and adults,” said Straub, who pointed to a section in the dating violence curriculum that she finds especially pertinent. “There is a session about internet safety and how to keep your children safe from predators,” she said. “The idea is that a lot of children and teenagers don’t understand the dangers of what they can get into on social media. The more the parents are educated, (the better they can) recognize when their child is cyberbullied or other negative (areas) of their technology.” She noted that she believes teaching parents about the red flags of dating violence is especially important. Another concept Straub feels should be impressed upon children is the life success sequence. “It’s statistically proven that if you go to school and you graduate and go to college or start a career, (and then) get married, and then have children … in that

sequence, you are much less likely to end up in poverty,” said Straub. Straub has already been invited to talk to members of sports teams in one Lancaster County school. She added that some schools hold activities related to dating violence during February to help raise awareness. According to Straub, both curriculums were developed specifically to be taught in schools. “(Both) meet all the federal government guidelines and requirements for sexual risk avoidance training in schools,” said Straub, who noted that the scope and sequence for teachers is provided. “This curriculum was developed to offer an alternative to comprehensive sex education, which will start in kindergarten.” Straub added that Pennsylvania is an abstinence-only state. “(That means that) whatever you teach in the school must say that abstinence is the only way to 100% prevent sexually transmitted disease and pregnancy,” explained Straub. “That’s what this curriculum teaches.” Straub noted that the curriculum can be taught to youth groups, to community groups, at counseling ministries, or to parent groups such as a Parent Teacher Organization. “I feel it’s

Straub is certified to teach two curriculums that pertain to adolescent safety and health with regard to dating issues. Relationships Under Construction, developed by Catherine Wood, is a relationship sexual risk avoidance curriculum for the whole person. It is for youths in grades five through 12 and can be taught in ageappropriate segments. Constructing Safe Relationships is a dating violence curriculum from the same publisher. The curriculum is set up to be taught in three sessions to seventh- and eighth-grade students and in four sessions to ninth- through 12th-grade students. Debbie Davenport, executive director at Cornerstone, is also certified to teach the curriculum. Both curriculums can be modified to be taught to parents as well. Cornerstone acquired the curriculums about three years ago.

Braves Qualify For First Ever PIAA Playoffs by Ara Grigorian

In sports, pretty much anything can happen. The Pequea Valley girls’ basketball team has proved that in its 2019-20 season. Unshaken by their LancasterLebanon League championship game defeat back on February 13, the Braves gathered themselves together and posted a victory in a District Three Class 3A playoff game against

Hanover on Tuesday, February 18. The victory, which took place in front of a home court crowd at Kinzers, advanced the Braves into the district semifinals and assured the girls’ basketball team a spot in the PIAA Class 3A state playoffs - the first in the program’s history. The Braves (21-6) came after the Nighthawks with a big 15-3 run in the first quarter and upped their lead to 27-10 by halftime. Caroline Horst had 18 points and

six rebounds, Rebecca Cox added 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Abbey Leslie, who had helped the Braves reach the league semifinals with an unforgettable night against Hempfield back on February 8, buried four three-pointers for 12 more Pequea points on Tues-

day. In that Hempfield game, Leslie had gone 7-for-8 from three-point range and scored 25 total points. Rebounding from the L-L League title game defeat at Manheim Township was also interesting in that the Braves lost to Lancaster Catholic by a 60-33 score and came back to top

PENNYSAVER Huber first worked an overtime pin, 26 seconds into extra time of the consolation semis. He came up short in the third-place overtime battle. Brown (160) pinned Jason Hefner of Kutztown 3:00 into the first-round match but lost a 6-0 decision in the second round. Brown regained momentum in the consis with a pin and two close decisions. He pinned TaiJohn Green of Schuylkill Valley six seconds into the third period of that bout and won backto-back 3-2 decisions. He lost 11-6 in the third-place match to Mike Torres of Elco. Junior Tyler Anderson finished sixth in the 138-pound weight class. After a pin midway into the third period of his opening-round bout over Nick Lamay of Camp Hill, Anderson claimed a major decision over Kayden Clark of Northern Lebanon before a pin in the semis sent him to the consolation brackets. Caden Droege of Lancaster Catholic won a close 2-0 decision in the consolation semis and Clark earned his revenge with a 4-2 win in the fifth-place match. Senior Aidan Cooke (145) went 1-2 on the weekend. He registered a pin 57 seconds into his first match but came up short in a 4-2 decision against Conor Leonard of Northern Lebanon. In the consis, Cooke lost to Dan O’Neill of Elco. At 132, Zach Donlen lost to eventual finalist Kyle Vernon of Hamburg and suffered a 5-1 loss in the consolations.

The Clinic for Special Children (CSC) is formalizing and expanding its home-based pediatric palliative and hospice care program, Cherished Lives, for Plain (Amish and Mennonite) patients with the support of a $10,000 Community Partnership Grant from WellSpan Health. The expansion of palliative care services is driven by the needs of Plain patients with rare genetic disorders who are served by CSC. The WellSpan Health grant allows CSC to increase patient access to free, culturally sensitive comfort and end-of-life care that includes treatment from a specially trained palliative care nurse, primary care physicians and specialists, if required, in the patient’s home. The grant also helps to fund bereavement services and grief resources for families, according to Keturah Beiler, nurse at CSC and co-founder of the Cherished Lives program. As a regional health system committed to assessing the health needs of its communities, WellSpan Health recognizes the need for end-of-life care in the region through its emphasis on horizon planning in its Community Health Improvement Plan. For more details, readers may visit www.wellspan.org. The Clinic for Special Children is a nonprofit organization that is located in Strasburg and provides primary pediatric care and advanced laboratory services to those with genetic or other complex medical disorders. The organization is primarily supported through community fundraising events and donations. For more information, readers may visit www.clinicforspecialchildren.org.

The orientation is designed for families who want to learn more about foster care and adoption through foster care.
