Grant Buys Opportunities For Students C.O.R.E. Enhances First Choice At PVHS BY ANN MEAD ASH
ack in 2020, former Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) school board member Tim Malloy saw an opportunity in the grants offered by Arkema, the parent company of Sartomer, the specialty chemical company he works for in Exton. Focusing on PV’s First Choice program, which endeavors to give each student opportunities to follow his or her first choice in a career path, and its C.O.R.E. (Career Occupation Relevancy Education) Academy, which teaches skill development while also offering integrated academic instruction, Malloy worked with principal John Trovato to submit an application. Malloy and Trovato gathered information required by the Arkema Fund for Education, including details of the program and the equipment that C.O.R.E. teachers Rob King and Josiah Moon needed to teach the variety of skills as they determine their career paths. “I put

the application in for $20,000,” said Malloy, adding that the grant was submitted on Dec. 3, 2020. In January 2021, Arkema representatives in France, where the company is located, responded with interest in the program and a request for a budget. Trovato asked C.O.R.E. for a list of requests and a budget was submitted. In the middle of March 2021, Malloy was informed that a grant of 16,500 euros had been awarded. “I called John and said, ‘Do you have a calculator?’” recalled Malloy. “I need you to do a conversion.” He and Trovato were thrilled to learn that the grant was for nearly $20,000. Trovato reported that when all the contracts were signed and the bank transfers completed in August of 2021, the final total was more than $18,806. King is pleased that the funds will help him to continue to introduce students to skills and trades they may not have considered. One way the academy has been reaching

New Life Preschool Is At Home At Old Road Montessori Program Thrives In Gap BY ANN MEAD ASH
“Back in 2010, members of the (Old Road Mennonite) Church felt led to start a preschool, so they started to pray about it to see what they felt God might want to have happen here,” said Pam Supplee, director of the New Life Community Preschool, located in Old Road Mennonite Church, 5795 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap. Starting the school was an act of faith, according to Supplee, who noted that two weeks before the first semester in 2011, the school had no students. “They said to God,

turned to the Lord, and that personal revival extends from us to our family to our community to our state to our nation.” The 2022 Remember America Speaker Series will feature Turning Point USA president and founder Charlie Kirk as the keynote speaker. This year’s presentation, which will include chorale performances and an orator, will be held at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, on Saturday, April 23. The dinner will be served at 6 p.m. The keynote speech, which will begin at 7:15 p.m., will be followed by a brief question and answer period. Kirk, an activist and radio show host, founded Turning Point USA with Bill Montgomery in 2012, and he currently serves as CEO of Turning Point Action and Turning Point Faith. Turning Point USA is a nonprofit organization with chapters promoting conservative values on high school, college, and university campuses. Dayspring headmaster Dan Stone said that organizers have been hoping to have Kirk participate in Remember America. “As I was praying through our short list (of speakers) … I felt education is prominent in people’s thinking right now,” said Stone. “It’s a great time to highlight how education is such an important part of what our country is going through.” Stone noted that it seemed natural to choose Kirk to speak on the importance of education in restoring the country to biblical values. The theme of this year’s event is “Faith. Courage. Liberty.” “It starts with faith (because) in today’s world, Christians are being put in a position

where they will choose to be courageous or not,” said Stone. We are calling people to choose courage, and liberty will be the result.” Becker agreed, noting that the theme reflects the study of the country’s foundation, which is at the heart of Remember America. “We are reminding people (that) the founding documents of our nation and the writings of our founders … (had) a biblical world view,” said Becker. She also noted that the faith of the founders was applied to the building of the nation. “When you look at some of our founders and what they have written, you understand these were men of faith who were willing to stand and sacrifice,” she said. “Their faith inspired their courage, and what they endured established liberty like nothing else the world had ever seen.” Three types of tickets are available for the event. Readers may purchase tickets to the dinner and presentation, tickets to the gallery for the presentation only, or tickets to the presentation in a livestreamed format. Petra Church will host a Fearless Women event for women only on Friday, March 4, at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary. Light refreshments will be served in the atrium from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Attendees must be age 18 or older. Dr. James Reeves, pastor and author, will address the needs of women who are survivors of sexual abuse. The program is designed for all women, regardless of whether they have experienced trauma. The focus will be on the provision of information and resources, primarily through a “Fearless Series for Women” video and a question-andanswer time with Reeves. This event will provide a safe environment for Christian women to start the conversation about the prevalence of abuse in America, and it will offer tools that can help them move beyond the pain of their abuse. There is no cost and no need to register. To learn more, visit www.petra.church.

‘We know this is what you want us to do, but there are no children,’” she reported. “By the time preschool started, they had seven kids for the first class.” Supplee, who ran a traditional preschool in Gap prior to becoming director, said that the group chose to be a Montessori school for a number of reasons. “They wanted to offer a blended class of 3- to 5-year-olds, but teach each of the kids where they are at,” explained Supplee. “The Montessori (model) fit into that dream to be able to do that.” Supplee returned to college to study the Montessori method and was hired at New Life in 2014. The school uses the Youth With A Mission curriculum. “Montessori fits very well with that curriculum and what it teaches,” said Supplee. Currently, the school serves 14 students with four staff members each Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday morning. According to Supplee, much of the learning involves students working individually on projects, although crafts are done in groups. Montessori emphasizes real-life skills, such as pouring, how to walk and talk appropriately in a classroom, self-care, respect for the environment, and social graces, including when to apologize. Much of the learning is active. For instance, fine motor skills may be taught by working with locks, using tongs, and using glue sticks. Senses are enhanced by working with sound
jars to distinguish and match sounds or with fabrics to group those that feel similar. Academic instruction is also active, with manipulatives used to learn numbers and activities adjusted to a child’s age in learning letters and penmanship. As children learn individually, they come to think of their projects as their work. “The goal is (to) normalize getting a project and working (independently) without teacher help,” said Supplee, who noted that students, are also taught how to behave in groups so they are prepared for classroom situations in public or private school. “By the end of the year, they do most everything by themselves,” said Supplee of the students who often attain a level of responsibility not normally expected of that age group. Supplee explained that the founders were intentional in naming the school. “They chose the name New Life Community Preschool, and our logo is a tree with the roots and branches,” said Supplee. “A child is like a tree that needs strong roots and a foundation to be able to branch out,” she said, noting that the goal of New Life is to be nurturing to those children it serves. Malloy noted that more than 30% of PVSD graduates go on to further education. “We need to provide this alternative (for the others),” he said, adding that feedback from parents of C.O.R.E. students has been positive. “Parents said, ‘(My child) is now excited about going to school,’” he reported. “PV is a special place,” commented Trovato. “(Malloy) believes this so strongly, he advocates and pushes for us to get a grant, and Mr. King and his team keep coming up with new ideas to challenge these kids in different capacities to help them find their first choice.”

annual Rotary Four-Way Test Speech Contest. Guided by their English teacher, Olivia Sieg, Tre Rosa and Jaylen Ray each selected a topic and wrote a speech about how it relates to Rotary’s Four-Way Test. Created in 1932 by Rotary member Herbert J. Taylor, the Four-Way Test asks the following questions of the things one thinks, says, or does: “Is it the truth?” and “Is it fair to all concerned?” as well as “Will it build goodwill and better friendships?” and “Will it be beneficial to all concerned?” Tre, a junior at PVHS, shared his speech titled “Perfectly Imperfect,” in which he explored the concept of forgiveness and how young people must recognize and accept that adults in their lives are not perfect but that they can still learn and grow from their mistakes. Tre, the son of Ben and Becky Rosa, plans to continue his education beyond high school with the goal of becoming an agriculture education teacher. Jaylen, a senior at PVHS, reflected on her personal experiences attending school in both Pennsylvania and Illinois as she applied the Four-Way Test to the challenges faced by students in need. Jaylen, the daughter of Lynn Ray and Jay Prousa, plans to attend Penn State University to study early childhood education with the goal of becoming an early childhood or elementary school teacher. Both Tre and Jaylen will now compete in the Mid-Level Four-Way Test Speech Contest, which will be held virtually on Saturday, March 5. The top two students from that competition will move on to the Four-Way Test Speech Contest Finale, which will take place during the Rotary District 7390 Conference on Saturday, May 7. The Rotary Club of Paradise was established in 1956 and serves communities in southeastern Lancaster County, including East Lampeter, Paradise, Leacock, Strasburg, and Upper Leacock townships and Bird-in-Hand, Bridgeport, Intercourse, Leola, and Ronks. The club meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month at noon at the district office of the Conestoga Valley School District. Lady Braves Qualify for 3A State Playoffs
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
The Pequea Valley Braves are heading to the PIAA Class 3A state playoffs! The Braves played host to the Upper Dauphin Trojans on Tuesday, February 22 in a District Three Class-AAA playoff match, cruising to a 43-30 victory and punching their ticket not only to the district semis but also a state playoff berth. The top four teams from the district advance to the Class-AAA PIAA’s. The Braves came into the district playoffs as the third seed and thus played host to sixth-seeded Upper Dauphin. In the opening period, the Braves (13-11) jumped out to a 9-5 lead and maintained momentum into intermission. Leading 24-13 at the half, the Braves outscored the Trojans 19-17 in the second half. Leading all scorers on the
night was sophomore Shania Stoltzfus. She led Pequea’s balanced attack with 12 points, which included a pair of three-point baskets. Breanne Beiler added eight points while Morgan Graham chipped in with five. Rebecca Cox and Sarah Arment each had a pair of baskets for their four points of the night while Carly Anderson drilled a three-point bucket for her scoring contribution. Deena Stoltzfus also scored three. Kara Rupp led the Trojans with eight points. Gracie Griffiths poured in seven points. The playoff brackets had second-seeded Trinity awaiting the winner of the Pequea Valley-Upper Dauphin game while top-seeded Brandywine Heights (17-5) found its semifinals round opponent would be York Catholic - a 58-39 winner over Susquenita.
WRESTLING The District Three Class 2A Section 2 wrestling tournament was held on Saturday, February 19 at Central Dauphin East. Pequea wrestlers Liam McGinley and Zach Hollenbaugh were impressive in their bouts with McGinley taking fifth and Hollenbaugh seventh in their respective weight classes. McGinley bounced back with two first-period pins after an opening-round setback to Marcus Colson of Camp Hill - a 7-1 decision in Colson’s favor. McGinley, who wrestled at the 120-pound weight class, bounced back to pin Sam Miller of Middletown in 1:51
and registered a pin in 39 seconds, taking down Luke Jordan of Berks Catholic. Eventual fourth-place finisher Owen Breidegan of Northern Lebanon topped McGinley 10-3, sending the Pequea senior to the fifth-place match where he won on a fall. He pinned Tillman Artell of Bishop McDevitt 2:44 into that match. Hollenbaugh competed in the 189-pound class, opening his day with a quick pin, needing 44 seconds to down Bryce Butler of Wyomissing. Just as quickly as he had pinned, Hollenbaugh was the victim of a pin in the next round. Ehan Yoh of Schuylkill Valley had a first-
period fall, sending the PV junior into the consolations. Hollenbaugh notched another pin, registering one against Dominic Singh of Middletown. What followed was a hard-fought, close decision where Northern Lebanon sophomore Tanner Feagley escaped with a 6-4 decision. Remaining resilient, Hollenbaugh won the seventh-place match with a tough 9-6 score, defeating Nick Ball of Eastern Lebanon County.
