Ease The Burden: Local Organization To Focus On Schools/Community Service hen Ease the Burden (ETB) was founded in 2019, the organization sought to help fill financial gaps for families throughout Lancaster County. In the few years since, however, ETB board members have decided to partner with educators in a pilot program to help area children. They formed a relationship with Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), working with Kathy Koenig, director of student services for PVSD. “We found that we had started to focus specifically on children as the group we were trying to help,” said Sean High, one of the founders of ETB. ETB board members plan to connect with other districts in the future. Along with adjusting the focus, the idea of giving back to the community will be part of ETB’s DNA. “ We really wanted to emphasize community service,”

“If you had 100 kids who receive a needed educational item and 100 hours of community service was served, that goes hand in hand.” When the recipient is an individual child, ETB will take steps to protect the anonymity of the student. Founder Mindy Lapp pointed to a school play as an example. “Due to the pandemic,

the booster clubs don’t have as much money,” she said, adding that all the students in a cast would like T-shirts, but not every child’s family can afford one. “(Through ETB), the whole cast could (perform) community service, and they would all get Tshirts,” she said. Lapp added that she had spoken with teachers at both the Pequea Valley intermediate and high schools, who told her that students could complete service projects in small groups to comply with COVID-19 safety guidelines. Another goal of ETB will be to connect with area businesses. “We could tie the business partners in with an item, and (the business could put) their logo on it,” High said, adding that it is important for businesses to strengthen ties with the community at this time. “We could do a health bag with toothpaste, deodorant, and shampoo to remove the health barriers to

education,” High said. “(Schools) will tell us the items (that are needed) and the community service (to be completed).” He added that service projects need not be complicated. “It could be raking leaves for elderly people or shoveling snow,” he shared, adding that Koenig is working with teachers who have classroom needs and community service ideas in mind. Lapp added that the new focus will allow ETB to help many more students than they could with individual grants. “If you had 100 kids who receive a needed educational item and 100 hours of community service was served, that goes hand in hand,” she said. ETB board members include, in addition to High and Lapp, Jack Herr, Jill Castor, and Lisa LandisBlowers. ETB has a website that offers information about the organization and shares opportunities to donate. Readers who would like to learn more may visit www.helpetb.org.

High stated, noting that school staff members will organize community service activities in exchange for ETB funds. “So, you might have a third-grade teacher who would say, ‘Let’s take a Saturday afternoon to clean the park,’” explained High, who added that in return the class would receive an item that meets an educational need.

For 2021, Dayspring Christian Academy has chosen the theme “Return to the Foundation: Reviving the Seed of Our Nation” for its 11th Remember America Speaker Series event. Dayspring has also chosen to change its presentation format from individual speakers to an in-depth interview between two well-known authors. “Our events have always had a strong spiritual foundation, but we really sensed that the Lord was taking the lid off that this year,” said Dayspring headmaster Mike Myers. “The focus will truly be on revival for America.” Remember America, which will feature author and radio host Eric Metaxas interviewing pastor and author Jonathan Cahn, will be held on Saturday, May 1, at the Lancaster County Convention Center. Tickets to the livestreamed event are available on a pay-what-you-can basis.

Citylight Dance Theatre will present “Take Heart,” a dance concert of choreography meant to encourage, challenge, and build hope in audience members. “Take Heart” will share dance works including modern, contemporary, ballet, hiphop, and acrobatics. Performances will take place at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 6, and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 7, at Cavod Theatre, 665 W. Main St., New Holland. Each piece of repertoire is original and set to an eclectic mix of music. Several performers will also share personal life stories that connect to themes portrayed throughout the dances. Certain

pieces share a story, such as “God Only Knows,” a piece sharing the pain and fear a woman has gone through and how only God fully understands and can bring her hope. Others are more conceptual, such as “I Am,” which depicts the bondage that people have with different inner struggles and how to find hope and true identity. Citylight Dance Theatre is a contemporary-based dance ministry company of Cavod Theatre seeking to display the glory of God through dance and the arts. That’s what is making the (Brave Kids Learning Center) happen.” Looking forward, Neff is hoping to start a mentorship program that can utilize the family room space after school. “We want to get kids in the building with whatever precautions we need to take,” she said. “We needed that space to be able to let our programs grow and do things daily and work with families directly while the rest of the building is

Before the state was shut down in March of 2020, the four staff members at the Together Community Center (TCC) who work with children from birth to sixth grade were feeling the pinch of not having enough space to meet with students or families. In addition, the four were spread out in the building without easy access to each other. According to Karla Neff, director of Pequea Valley elementary advocacy at The Factory Ministries, the issues became more problematic when the first shutdown occurred and children who attend Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) schools began to attend classes online. “We weren’t having programming at the school, but the need for academic support was rising,” said Neff. “Engagement was low for a lot of students, especially at-risk students.” In fact, even though PVSD quickly made online learning available, about 25% of students were not able to engage virtually. The need for space where students could be served academically became a significant issue. Programming to help underresourced learners was available, but the spaces at TCC where help could be offered were in need of renovation. In April 2020, several entities - PVSD, Community Action Partnership (CAP), the PPL Foundation, and individuals and businesses from the Paradise-area community joined together to sponsor the remodeling of two classrooms, which would be connected by a

doorway and would be called Brave Kids Learning Center. The first room would become offices for the staff members who engage with children from birth to sixth grade. The individual offices would be large enough for meetings with students and families, while offering privacy and confidentiality. The second room, which Neff calls the family room, is larger and conducive to clubs and other activities, including structured activities and meeting time for families utilizing The Factory’s family crisis housing. Sponsorships and community contributions raised $80,000 to remodel the two classrooms. “The family room side was completely

Carrie Johnson, executive director with Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster, wants to make it clear that the program is open to all girls in the age groups it serves. “Any girl can participate,” said Johnson. “We want to remove all limitations, whether financial, physical, or emotional. We want to remove those so that any girl can benefit.” In accordance with that goal, the spring 2021 program has been changed to accommodate COVID-19 restrictions. “We’ve adapted our program to make it totally safe and flexible for girls and coaches,” explained program director Jennifer West, who noted that the organization allows participants to connect with their friends in person or virtually. A new virtual curriculum was written to match in-person lessons, and the program has eliminated shared materials by providing each girl with her own journals, hand sanitizer, and a cinch sack for storage. Masking and social distancing in compliance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines are followed. Team members meet in person when they can, at their school if possible, or in parks, at churches, or in community buildings. West explained that if schools close, a virtual practice can be held, with the lesson presented virtually. West stated that what has not changed is the lesson content. GOTR’s goals are to promote good choices for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living among girls. “They still get the same great

lessons about practicing empathy and standing up for themselves and others, and we still take part in a community impact project,” shared West. GOTR staff members are looking for places for students to meet and are also seeking volunteer team coaches, which are essential to the program. “It’s a unique mentoring opportunity,” said Johnson, who added that the girls who participate are not the only ones who benefit. “It changes a coach’s life,” she noted. West pointed out that coaches need not be runners. “Men, women, college students, and high school students (can be coaches),” said West, who added that having a heart to help girls grow up with selfesteem is key. “You have to have a desire to help the girls and have meaningful conversa- Girls on the Run Lancaster is tions,” explained West. “Be a unveiling a spring curriculum positive role model, be silly, that can be used virtually or in and play fun games - that’s person. We realized we needed a space here to respond to that need,” she shared. Becker said the interview format was a decision inspired by the Holy Spirit. A board, made up of parents of Dayspring students and supporters of Dayspring’s mission, prays yearly for inspiration for speakers. “We set our hearts for the Lord and seek Him,” said Becker. “The combination of these two speakers came from one of our team members, and it was really divine inspiration.” Myers confirmed the importance of prayer to the foundation of the school and the nation. “Over the centuries many prayers have been prayed and many declarations decreed regarding the Gospel purpose for America,” he said. “We are going to renew that and make sure the rising generations understand our heritage, so we can continue in what we believe (is) God’s plan for America.” In addition to the interview, the presentation will include performances by the Dayspring chorus and a presentation by a select student orator. Tickets to the livestreamed portion of the event, which must be purchased by Friday, April 23, are available at www.dayspringchristian.com or by calling the school at 717-285-2000.

Metaxas, the author of “Bonhoeffer,” “Amazing Grace,” and “Martin Luther,” is the host of the Eric Metaxas Radio Show and the creator of “Socrates in the City” events. Cahn is the author of “The Harbinger,” which compares the post-9/11 United States to ancient Israel, among other books. “(Cahn’s) books look at the biblical pattern the nations go through,” said Myers. “(The book of) Jeremiah (says that) ... God raises up or tears down (any nation) because of their alignment with His purposes or not.” Cahn is also the head of Hope of the World ministry, and he leads the Jerusalem Center/Beth Israel in Wayne, N.J. Dayspring events manager Lisa Becker said she believes the pair will present an important perspective. “We are beginning to see the stirrings of an awakening, and we feel the Lord has presented us with this opportunity to breathe into that,” she shared, noting that as author of “If You Can Keep It,” which explores the roots of the republic, Metaxas has an understanding of the founding of America on biblical values. Becker said she is looking forward to hearing him interview Cahn, based on the historical perspective Cahn has presented.

On Jan. 15, the anniversary of the late Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, one local organization announced its most recent effort to promote diversity and inclusion, ideals to which King dedicated much of his life. The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, has established a scholarship that will benefit graduate students from underrepresented backgrounds. Master’s-level students who have excelled in the field of speech-language pathology at Penn State University will be supported by the scholarship, and recipients will be offered externships at Schreiber, an option that the organization expects to help it recruit and hire more minority candidates for therapy positions. Schreiber president James DeBord has led the creation of several initiatives committed to reducing disparities in care and to fostering an organization that better reflects the diverse populations it serves. These include connecting with national associations repre-

senting professionals of color to expand its hiring pool, conducting outreach in local school districts to affirm the professional aspirations of young people, strengthening clinical affiliations with historically black colleges and universities, and drawing on job-training programs that are equipped to attract people of color into every department and to its management team. “Throughout our history, Schreiber has always tried to provide services to some of the most vulnerable children in our community,” DeBord said. “Our mantra is we will serve every family who needs us, and we want every child we see to reach their fullest potential. But in the past - and even still today - we have not achieved the diversity in our field that would best benefit our clients. By endowing this graduate scholarship at Penn State, we are taking a long-overdue step to advance equitable access to training in outpatient pediatric therapy services, with the long-term goal of creating a pool of speech-language pathology experts that reflect the communities they serve.” Penn State was selected as the educational partner because a large proportion of Schreiber’s practitioners holds degrees from Penn State’s program. “The college’s speech-language pathology program continues to pioneer interventions that are having a transformative effect on augmenting communication,” said Craig J. Newschaffer, Raymond E. and Erin Stuart Schultz Dean of Penn State’s College of Health and Human Development. “The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development Educational Equity Graduate Scholarship represents a major expansion in our capacity to secure talented applicants from across the full spectrum of candidates. We are deeply grateful to Schreiber for its generosity and leadership in making all these advances possible.” Schreiber has pledged $275,000 for the scholarship, which will be raised in addition to the funds needed for the center’s daily operations. The gift will be matched by Penn State’s Educational Equity Matching Program for a total endowment of $550,000. Readers who would like to contribute to the scholarship may visit www.schreiberpediatric.org.

Mitzvah Moms Give Back BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Inspired by a desire to give back, two local moms have created a group to help others. Mitzvah Moms was created by Gina Krouse of Lampeter and Gena Harting of Strasburg in the fall of 2020. Initially, the pair focused on collecting items for the homeless, but they then shifted their mission to helping people affected by COVID-19. “COVID started hitting close to home,” Harting said. “We knew someone at our synagogue who got sick, so we put together a basket for them. Then, someone in my moms’ group was affected. We started tossing around the idea of creating a

group called Mitzvah Moms because it sounded cute and also because we thought there might be other people who would like to do this with us.” The pair created a Facebook group and soon had almost 100 members. “Mitzvah” is a Hebrew word that means “good deed.” The friends use their Facebook group to create gift baskets to give to people affected by COVID-19. “The baskets include a new, soft blanket and self-care products to help with decongestion,” Krouse noted. “They also have snacks because everybody loves food. It’s a basket of comfort items. We wanted to focus on the comfort, warmth and

support.” Baskets are catered to the individual, and all recipients are kept as confidential as possible, she stated, adding, “We ask for some basic information about the person receiving the basket ... so they get a basket that really fits their needs and wants.” Mitzvah Moms took off quickly as word spread through the friends’ network as well as their synagogue, Shaarai Shomayim in Lancaster. “Our rabbi is involved with the Interfaith Coalition in Lancaster, and we asked him if he would consider spreading the word among other

congregation leaders and passing names our way,” Krouse explained. The women said donations of items for baskets and monetary gifts have been overwhelming, and in fact, they currently have more donations than people to receive them. “It’s a good problem to have,” Harting stated. “We’re facing the challenge of trying to reach out and identify more people who would like a basket.” Harting and Krouse, who have four children among them and homeschool their kids, said Mitzvah Moms has offered a way to set an example for their families while also See Moms pg 10
