On a Saturday in July of 2020, Tim Rogers learned online that his brother-in-law, Justo Smoker, had been arrested for the kidnapping of Linda Stoltzfoos, a young Amish woman abducted in Bird-in-Hand and later murdered.

Tim and his daughter, Megan Shertzer, who was the only other family member at home, were reeling from the shock of the news when the doorbell rang. “My first thought was that I didn’t want to go to the door,” recalled Tim. Waiting on the front step was an Amish neighbor who had heard the news and brought her family along with flowers and vegetables from her garden. The woman had been the teacher in the Nickel Mines Schoolhouse on the day of that tragedy in 2008. “She said, ‘I want you to know that there’s hope and God will take care of you,’” Tim reported. “We could

see the tears in her eyes, and they were in mine too,” he noted, adding, “(That she would be) the person at the door offering what she offered,” recalled Tim. “It was simple, but the gift of presence in that space was really powerful.”

“The story for us is the grace of the Amish community and the mercy they offered to us in the middle of such a terrible tragedy.”

That day was the beginning of a journey that would show the Rogers family the depth of grace to be offered by the family members of Linda Stoltzfoos and the greater community. Those experiences would lead both Tim and Megan to begin journaling - recording events

as well as their emotional reactions and the questions the situation forced them to examine. The result of those writings is “Beechdale Road,” a self-published book that represents Tim and Megan’s goal to share with others the hope and mercy they found in the aftermath of a terrible crime. Because Stoltzfoos was an aide to children with special needs in a one-room schoolhouse, part of the proceeds from the sale of “Beechdale Road” will help support Amish special education in Lancaster County.

For Megan, the crime committed by someone she knew and cared for brought her face-to-face with questions she never anticipated having to answer. “(Justo) was a fun uncle,” she recalled. “One of the biggest things I have wrestled with is what to do when someone has done such a horrific, evil thing when that’s not who you know them to be.” Megan pointed to memories of an uncle she knew to

WordUP to host free movie screening

WordUP Community Ministries has planned a family-friendly event on Saturday, March 16, that will include a free showing of Disney’s live-action adaptation of “The Lion King,” along with food and a craft. Activities will take place at WordUP, a nondenominational church located at 160 Route 41, Gap, in the Dutchland Inc. building. An Easter craft will take place at 3 p.m., and attendees will be provided with hot dogs. The movie will begin at 4 p.m., and it will be shown on two 65-inch television screens.

Local quilts help support Fairmount’s Sharing Fund

In 1990, Fairmount held its first auction and chicken barbecue. From the beginning, handmade quilts, made by area sewists, have been a part of the event. “In the first year, a quilt was donated, which was what started the auction,” reported Swailes. “Then in the next couple of years, people would donate completed quilts (to be sold).”

According to Swailes, about four or five years after the first

auction, the initial Quilting Days was held. Quilting Days brings together stitchers who live in the area surrounding Fairmount, which is located on a plateau in Ephrata high above the surrounding farm fields, to stitch beautiful quilts, which are later sold to benefit the organization’s Sharing Fund.

This year, Quilting Days took place in Fairmount’s Farm Crest Community Room, 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata, on Feb. 17, 20, and 21, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. More than 200 quilters

uncle, Scar, Simba feels responsible for his father’s death and must overcome his fear of taking responsibility as the rightful heir to the throne. After growing up and meeting new friends along the way, Simba returns to challenge Scar and take his place as the king. The movie’s themes include self-discovery and redemption.

Free popcorn, candy and water will be available during the movie.

According to pastor Buck Mowday, the event is being held following a successful showing of the movie “Fireproof” last fall, which was designed for married adults and couples. He noted that attendees at that event included congregation members as well as the public.

“We want to reach out to the community,” said Mowday. “It is an opportunity to do something together as a family. And it’s a movie kids will love.”

Mowday noted that the event is open to families with children of all ages. No child care will be provided.

In addition to outreaches to the community, WordUP offers an in-person Sunday worship service at 10:45 a.m. The service is also livestreamed on www .youtube.com. The Sunday WordUP cafe, offering coffee and snacks, is open prior to the service at 10 a.m. For more information, visit www.wordupcommu nityministries.org or www .facebook.com/WordUP CommunityMinistries.

Growing up by the Pequea Creek

Submitted by Leona Baker, Historical Society of Salisbury Township Memoirs of Faye Hershey Mummau, Part I

The following is an excerpt from the November 2023 presentation by Faye Hershey Mummau at a historical society meeting. Faye was accompanied to the meeting by her brother, Art Hershey, former state representative.

“I will always treasure the memories I have and experiences I had growing up by the Pequea Creek (in the 1940s and 1950s).

“The (framed) house we lived in was without hot water or a bathroom. Water for cooking was carried from a cistern and poured into a water tank on the cookstove. The only other heat we had was a coal stove in the dining

room where we ate. The kitchen was too small for a table large enough to seat eleven - five boys, four girls and my parents. The formal dining room was used mostly as a sewing room where Mother sewed the girls’ dresses, slips and PJs, as well as the endless mending that seemed to never be finished.

“The stovepipe from the stove in the dining room went through the ceiling to a small room upstairs - the baby’s room. It was the only heated upstairs room. All the other rooms were cold in winter. We four girls slept in two bedrooms; our closet was two sets of orange crates with a rod between for hanging clothes behind a curtain. The boys slept at the other end of the house with a separate stairway.

Shoes & Boots For The Whole Family

“Monday was always washday. On Saturday afternoon, the oldest boys had filled two big iron kettles with water and placed them over the fire in the washhouse. On Monday morning, on his way to the barn, Dad started the fire underneath those kettles. By the time barn chores and breakfast were over,

Students invited to enter art contest

The Shapiro Administration invites all first- through sixth-grade students in Pennsylvania to enter the 2024 Lyme Art Contest by creating a short video or poster focusing on the theme “Protect. Check. Remove.” The annual contest aims to help students, Scout troops, and community youth programs learn how to prevent Lyme disease by educating them about ticks, including where these creatures live, how to prevent bites, and how to remove ticks that do bite.

Officials from the Departments of Health (DOH), Education (PDE), Environmental Protection (DEP), and Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) encourage young students to participate in the contest and help raise awareness of Lyme disease.

The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. on Friday, March 15. Contest information can be found at http://tinyurl.com/ TickborneDiseaseArtCon test24.

Finalists will be notified by mail and will be invited to an award ceremony at the state Capitol in May. In 2023, nine winners were recognized at a ceremony with representatives from DOH, PDE, and DCNR.

Pennsylvania has one of the highest annual counts of Lyme disease cases in the nation. Ticks are usually found in shrubs, weeds, leaf litter, and tall grasses, but can be found anywhere there is grass. When exploring outside, it is important to take the proper steps to lower one’s risk of getting bitten; these steps include covering exposed skin, wearing light colors to help detect ticks, and using an EPA-approved insect repellent. Use permethrin spray on shoes, clothes, and gear as an added protection before spending time outdoors.

After being outside, people should check themselves and their children and pets thoroughly for ticks and remove any that they find. Then, people should shower to help remove any ticks they may have missed. Clothes may be put in the dryer on high heat to help kill any ticks that might still be stuck to the clothes.

the water was hot enough for Mother to tackle the huge pile of laundry.

“The washing machine and rinse tub were filled with the hot water. Homemade soap went into the washtub. White clothes and bed linen went into the first load. The last load was the very dirty work clothes. By noon, the wash lines were full and blowing in the breeze. Those clothes needing to be ironed were dampened, rolled tightly and placed in a plastic bag and into the refrigerator.

“As soon as we girls were old enough, we helped with the ironing, beginning with Dad’s red and blue handkerchiefs and our own, made from worn-out dresses. Remember, there were no paper tissues back then. When my older sister came home from school on Tuesdays, she would begin ironing the piles of shirts

and feed bag dresses.

“Mother was very organized, and she put us to work according to our abilities. Our household chores were designated: cleaning, lawn mowing and weeding the garden in addition to the kitchen work for girls and barn work for the boys. Our work was to be finished by Saturday noon. The afternoon was spent preparing for Sunday: taking baths, polishing shoes and studying our Sunday school lessons.

“When we were small, Mother would fill a wooden tub, place it near the coal stove and give us each our bath behind a curtain she hung on chairs. As we got older, we took basins to our bedrooms or took a shower in the wash house, using a bucket with a spigot at the bottom and hung on a beam. The challenge was getting finished before the bucket emptied.”

gathered over the three days. During that time, they stitched quilt tops on up to a dozen racks.

A total of 10 quilts were completed, with another four nearly completed.

“The unfinished quilts will be set up in a quilting area

for Fairmount residents to complete,” explained Carol Swailes, Fairmount public relations coordinator and a quilter herself. “(Residents) will probably (be working on one quilt at a time) most of the time between now and auction day.”

All the finished quilts will be sold at the 2024 auction and chicken barbecue, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14, at New Covenant Mennonite Fellowship, 529 E. Farmersville Road, New Holland.

local residents together in community, and the bright shades of the quilts and the soft voices of the women chatting as they work provide an interlude during the cold and often dark days of February. Quilting Days attracts many Fairmount residents and local families. Swailes noted that groups of sisters were gathered at some quilt racks.

When Swailes visited the gathering on Feb. 21, she noted that this year’s quilt tops are especially colorful. She recalled that black and gold were predominant colors last year. “This year there isn’t a decisive color scheme,” noted Swailes. Indeed, for 2024, a variety of hues, including pink and green, light blue, and cranberry and white were present. “I think what makes a really great quilt is contrast (in the colors),” said Swailes, pointing out a quilt that used black pieces to frame brightly hued squares.

As she walked between the rows of sewists, Swailes pointed out the small plastic containers sitting on top of the material. “When you quilt, you keep a little plastic cup on the quilt all the time to keep extra threads in,” said Swailes, who observed the many quilt patterns and talked to the stitchers about their work. Often a pattern goes by more than one moniker or combines the names of a few different patterns. One group called the quilt the members were stitching an Irish Chain

Postage Stamp, but then noted that the real name was Rainbow Around the World. One black, white, aqua, and teal quilt pattern was called Kaleidoscope, and a cranberry, black, and white quilt done in applique and emblazoned with the words “I Am the Rose of Sharon, the Lily of the Valley” was called Log Cabin Star. “There’s one over here that I find interesting because it’s kind of whimsical,” noted Swailes, pointing out a double wedding ring patterned quilt

done in black, tan, white, and cream. Another quilt sported a pattern called Boston Commons.

Fairmount’s Sharing Fund, which aids residents who have exhausted their finances, has an annual budget of $2.8 million. Fairmount, a nonprofit retirement community founded in 1968, is located on two adjoining campuses in Ephrata. be silly, safe, funny, caring, and supportive. “What do you do with that when we often want to define people as good or bad?” she asked. “What do you do when they’re both?” What Megan learned through the experience is that “we are all both good and bad.” “It’s easy to forget that because then it affects us and it’s about us and not just those bad people out there who do bad things. It was a battle for me to learn (that).”

After Tim and Megan each discovered that the other was recording events and feelings, they began sharing their writings with each other. They discussed working together on a project in an open-ended manner. “It was never, ‘We are going to write a book and this is how we’re going to do it, and it will be done by this time,’” said Megan.

One day Tim told a therapist who was helping the family deal with the

situation about the understanding he and his family had received in the wake of the tragedy. “I shared a vignette of a moment that had happened with the Amish community,” recalled Tim. “(The therapist said), ‘That is so powerful; you need to write this down.’” That conversation led to Tim and Megan beginning to put their writings into order. “We thought there was enough that could be helpful to put out to people,”

said Tim. “The story for us is the grace of the Amish community and the mercy they offered to us in the middle of such a terrible tragedy. It was such a gift to us,” he said.

“Beechdale Road” will be available at the Gordonville Book Store and all Good’s Store locations beginning on Monday, April 1. More information about the book, including upcoming speaking engagements, may be found at www .beechdaleroad.com.
