Shaubach, Ian Hershey, Sarah Keenan, Jamison Caster, and Alexandria Martelli.

PVHS To Stream “Les Misérables” To Audiences BY ANN MEAD ASH
athan Bankert, director of the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) production of “Les Misérables,” is happy to laud the cast members, videographers, audio specialists, learners, and others who have helped make the spring show a reality. “It has been a community effort to put such a major production together in a totally different way,” said Bankert. The show will be recorded and livestreamed to ticketholders via a link on Thursday, March 18, at 7 p.m.; Friday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, March 20, at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at www.showTix4U.com /events/19236. Known as “Les Mis,” the show is set in early 19th-century France, and the story follows French peasant Jean Valjean, played by Ian Hershey, who was imprisoned for 19 years a a result of stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister’s starving child. After Valjean’s life is changed by the forgiveness of a priest, he attempts to create a new,
“It has been a community effort to put such a major production together in a totally different way,” Well-known solos include “I Dreamed a Dream,” sung by Shaubach; “On My Own,” sung by Martelli; and “Stars,” sung by Maina-Itegi. Both Hershey and Caster noted that memorization for the lengthy production is a challenge, but that issues related to COVID-
19 restrictions are more complicated. “It’s hard to decide how to do a scene without being too close,” said Hershey. Martelli agreed, sayting, “We can’t really do any partner dancing and no hugging.” Other COVID-related issues include the unpredictability of the situation. “We never really know if we will be at school the next day or even the next week,” said Caster, noting that the snowy weather has added to the problem. Hershey said that he is intrigued with the process of creating a movie rather than doing a live performance, and Martelli added that the opportunity to do the show adds an element of normalcy to the cast members’ lives. Bankert said that he specifically chose the show because he knew it could be streamed. To make the process safe for all involved, the audio and video were recorded separately with help from faculty member Kent Haberern on video and volunteer Frank Heverin on audio. “I thought that would be the safest way to do it,” said Bankert.

Over the years, Valjean is pursued by Inspector Javert, played by Jazae Maina-Itegi, who is determined to send him back to prison. Others playing lead roles include Alexandria Martelli as Eponine, Julia Shaubach as Fantine, and Jamison Caster as Marius. The show is sung through, but it is known for specific songs, including “One Day More.”
On Saturday, April 24, preordered donuts may be picked up at Paradise Elementary School, 20 N. Belmont Road, Paradise, from 8 to 10 a.m. during the first Donuts with Grownups Drive-Thru. The donuts, made by Dutch-Way Farm Market in Gap, may be purchased by the half-dozen through Wednesday, April 14. Each box will contain two glazed doughnuts, two white frosted donuts with red sprinkles and two red frosted donuts with white sprinkles. The donut decorations were chosen to match Pequea Valley School District colors. Although any funds raised by the event will be used for field trips or to bring educational experiences to the school, organizer Christy Fieldsa said that the effort is really about bringing families together. “This is more of a

and spiritual care and support in a Christ-centered program. “The Harbor focuses on restoration and re-entry, coordinating the services needed to address physical, mental, legal, educational, and other issues relating to the time spent in the hands of traffickers,” said Esbenshade. With a staff of 15, The Harbor provides around-the-clock care seven days a week. “We accept women 18 to 35 years of age,” said Esbenshade. Esbenshade said that the program is implemented in a number of phases, beginning with an assessment and orientation. “We go over goals and how we can best help (a woman),” explained Esbenshade. “We tailor the curriculum to each individual.” The program includes a focus on trauma and drug and alcohol addiction, along with life skills training. During later phases of the program, the resident will work or attend school. Readers who would like to attend Welcome to the Battle may visit www.north starinitiative.org and click on “Events.”

“We think it’s important for people to know about (human) trafficking and to know it happens right here in Lancaster County,” said Janelle Esbenshade, director of development with North Star Initiative, “with the hope that once they understand … if they come in contact with (someone who is being trafficked), they will be educated enough to know what to do.” To help make community members aware of the signs of trafficking, North Star Initiative will hold an awareness event, Welcome to the Battle, at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, on Friday, March 19. The event, which will feature a panel discussion, will begin at 6 p.m. Tickets, which are limited, may be purchased up until the day of the event. Proceeds raised from the event will help provide trauma therapy for the survivors at The Harbor.
Panelists who are lined up to take part are Heather Castellino, Pennsylvania deputy attorney general; Derek Thompson, founder of Abolition Men; Brad Ortenzi, retired police officer and eastern USA regional director of Zoe International; and Liz Nolan, education specialist and licensed professional counselor for North Star Initiative. A surprise guest will also join the discussion. The event will include desserts provided by Zig’s Bakery and Shady Maple. Attendees will be asked to follow Petra’s COVID-19 guidelines, including wearing masks. According to Esbenshade, the forum is designed to educate by posing questions to the panel about human trafficking, such as, “ What is (human) trafficking?” “Who are the victims of this crime?” and “What can you do to get involved?” Esbenshade noted that runaways and homeless people are the main two groups of people who are preyed upon by traffickers. Trafficking that occurs in Lancaster County is often related to the network of highways that converge here. “We are a pass-through state,” explained Esbenshade, who noted that roads from New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia come through Lancaster, York, and Harrisburg to Baltimore and Washington, D.C. North Star operates The Harbor, a place where survivors of trafficking can experience physical, psychological, emotional,

Ease The Burden BY ANN MEAD ASH
When Ease the Burden (ETB) was founded in 2019, the organization sought to help fill financial gaps for families throughout Lancaster County. In the few years since, however, ETB board members have decided to partner with educators in a pilot program to help area children. They formed a relationship with Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), working with Kathy Koenig, director of student services for PVSD. “We found that we had started to focus specifically on children as the group we were trying to help,” said Sean High, one of the founders of ETB. ETB board members plan to connect with other districts in the future. Along with adjusting the focus, the idea of giving back to the community will be part of ETB’s DNA. “We really wanted to emphasize community service,” High stated, noting that school staff members will organize community service activities in exchange for

in the 30 days of April. Ticket holders must be 18 years of age or older to participate. “Each day we will pull a name,” explained Lynda Charles, president and founder of the organization. “The name that we pull will get the designer bag of that day. Hopefully, people will buy more than one ticket.” The giveaway replaces the organization’s previous fundraiser, a designer bag bingo. “Last year, just prior to COVID, we actually had our very first designer bag bingo at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster,” Charles reported. “People loved it but with COVID our fundraising events have altered, just as everyone else’s has. We decided to do this for the month of April.” Currently, the organization has about 20 bags that it purchased brand new by designers Michael Kors, Kate Spade, Tory Burch, Coach and others. Sponsors are needed to fund the cost of the remaining bags. “We have a lot of styles and colors,” Charles pointed out. “With our choices, we are trying to appeal to as many people as possible.” Winners of the bags will be contacted by phone, and their names will be announced on the Help The Fight website and Facebook page. All proceeds will benefit the charity, which provides breast cancer patients with funds to buy groceries, pay rent and mortgages, and cover day care fees and medical bills. It also provides funds for cancer screenings. “Wherever the need is of the patient is what we help with,” Charles said. “We have filled oil tanks and put tires on a vehicle for a one-vehicle family. We have paid electric bills and bought Christmas presents by giving a family a Walmart gift card.” See Bingo pg 7

The plot of the musical revolves around Hill, a con man who pretends to be a band leader. He sells musical instruments and band uniforms to the residents of River City, Iowa, while promising to train the members of the new band. The townspeople, with the exception of librarian and piano teacher Paroo, fall for Hill’s tricks. Although Paroo sees the truth, after witnessing Hill helping her younger brother, Winthrop, played by Brandt Esh, overcome his lisp, Paroo begins to fall for the trickster. “The Music Man” has been a staple of musical theater
is happening in the world when they come to rehearsals. “(I enjoy) seeing the kids come in here and have fun for three or four hours and forget about everything else in a safe environment putting on a show,” he said. After having to reschedule, the director is especially looking forward to sharing the hard work of the cast with audiences. “I really hope audiences can see there is still fun to be had in bad times,” he said, adding that he also hopes the theme of authenticity will shine through. “The message behind the show is being able to find your true self,” he explained. “You don’t have to lie or be fake. The show is known for toe-tappers such as “76 Trombones” and “Ya Got Trouble,” along with the softer melodies of “‘Til There Was You,” and “Goodnight, My Someone.” Because “The Music Man” is such a popular show, Weaver is planning to deliver the classic tale but still offer audiences a bit of a fresh take by encouraging his actors, ages 9 to 17, to look into the depth of their characters. “I am a big fan of character development,” said Weaver. “I am trying to help them understand that every line in the script is in there for a reason to help them … understand their character a little better.” Weaver noted that it has been satisfying to see students take a break from what

ETB funds. “So, you might have a third-grade teacher who would say, ‘Let’s take a Saturday afternoon to clean the park,’” explained High, who added that in return the class would receive an item that meets an educational need. When the recipient is an individual child, ETB will take steps to protect the anonymity of the student. Founder Mindy Lapp pointed to a school play as an example. “Due to the pandemic, the booster clubs don’t have as much money,” she said, adding that all the students in a cast would like T-shirts, but not every child’s family can afford one. “(Through ETB), the whole cast could (perform) community service, and they would all get T-shirts,” she said. Lapp added that she had spoken with teachers at
both the Pequea Valley intermediate and high schools, who told her that students could complete service projects in small groups to comply with COVID-19 safety guidelines. Another goal of ETB will be to connect with area businesses. “ We could tie the business partners in with an item, and (the business could put) their logo on it,” High said, adding that it is important for businesses to strengthen ties with the community at this time. “We could do a health bag with toothpaste, deodorant, and shampoo to remove the health barriers to education,” High said. “(Schools) will tell us the items (that are needed) and the community service (to be completed).” He added that service projects need not be
complicated. “It could be raking leaves for elderly people or shoveling snow,” he shared, adding that Koenig is working with teachers who have classroom needs and community service ideas in mind. Lapp added that the new focus will allow ETB to help many more students than they could with individual grants. “If you had 100 kids who receive a needed educational item and 100 hours of community service was served, that goes hand in hand,” she said. ETB board members include, in addition to High and Lapp, Jack Herr, Jill Castor, and Lisa Landis-Blowers. ETB has a website that offers information about the organization and shares opportunities to donate. Readers who would like to learn more may visit www.helpetb.org.

Charles lost her mother to breast cancer in 1989 at the age of 49. In March of 2009, her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. Soon after, the charity began. “Within weeks of our sister’s diagnosis, the assistant at our office was also diagnosed,” Charles recalled. “My husband, Dave, and I wanted to be able to help. We held a bake sale to help with their expenses. We raised over $9,000.” She said that in addition to the bake sale, the money was raised through sponsors and a sale of T-shirts. In 2020, Help The Fight
assisted about 200 individuals. “COVID shut things down for a while. Those that needed assistance or screenings did not get them. We had a real rush when things opened,” Charles said. “Cancer is so unkind, and it does not stop during a pandemic.” Tickets for the designer purse giveaway must be purchased by Monday, March 22. The Pequea Valley girls’ team wrapped up its season with a home game against non-league foe Oley Valley on Friday, February 27. A dominant third quarter lifted Oley Valley to a 43-34 victory. The visitors outscored the Braves 11-4 in the third to increase their slim one-point halftime lead. Rebecca Cox scored a game-high 18 for the Braves. Sarah Arment finished with seven points. The Braves’ record was 6-10. They went 5-5 in league games. BOYS’ BASKETBALL When you look at the schedules of almost every sport in the LancasterLebanon League this school year, you’ll notice the postponements, the revised playoff formats, the delayed starts to various seasons and other anomalies. One such team that experienced all of the above was the Pequea Valley boys’ basketball team. The Braves somehow made it to the District Three Class 3A playoffs in a season that began with four games in five nights and later had Pequea playing three games in as many nights shortly after three postponements due to COVID-related issues. “I told these kids I’m very proud of them,” head coach Thad Rittenhouse emphasized. “We’ve been through more challenges with this team than any of the other teams in the league. I’ve even been told by a few of the other coaches.” Rittenhouse’s reason for pride extended into Tuesday night’s district playoff opener at Columbia. The Crimson Tide improved to 15-4 on the year with a 63-49 victory which ended Pequea’s season. However, it was a contest much closer than the 14-point margin of victory indicated. “We were actually playing very well,” Rittenhouse said. “We fought for every single thing. “The kids knew they would have to play with a lot of heart in this game,” continued the coach. “They had beaten us twice during the regular season. So, we knew going in that it was going to be a tough fight to stay with them. “The last time we played them, we had one game or two right before and one game right after,” Rittenhouse noted, referring to the February 12 loss that was sandwiched between games on the 11th and 13th. “We came out in this game and fought for every possession. We were in the game even in the beginning of the fourth quarter. Every loose ball, every rebound - we were fighting for every single possession. “Our defense and our rebounding helped keep us in the game,” continued the coach. “It was not our best shooting performance.” The Tide opened the fourth quarter with three three-point field goals. They were leading the Braves 39-34 after three quarters. Devon Colyer, who finished with a team

Lazar scored 10 points on the night. Josh Jarvis and Luke Peifer each scored eight. “Luke had our best three-point average,” Rittenhouse noted. “Josh and Luke are unsung heroes. Josh is one of the hardest workers; he is relentless. He took over the point guard duties for the first time in his career and he had an outstanding season.” The Braves are good Photo by Cheri Sine on a handful of juniors Deena Stoltzfus maneuvers past Oley returning next year.
