When director Alicia Trescavage chose “Aladdin Jr.” for this year’s Pequea Valley Intermediate School (PVIS) spring show, she wanted a show that called for a large cast. “It is a fun show that incorporates a lot of students in the ensemble,” explained Trescavage, who is now overseeing a cast of 55 in a presentation of the Disney classic. Trescavage said that she likes this version of “Aladdin Jr.” because it incorporates songs from the animated movie and the Broadway show. The musical will be staged in the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) auditorium, 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers. Shows will be held on Friday, March 20, at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, March 21, at 2 and 7 p.m. Based on the 1992 Disney film, which is an adaptation of the folktale

“Aladdin,” the plot tells of a young boy, Aladdin, played by Nick Ammon, who is a “diamond in the rough.” He encounters a friendly Genie, played by Logan McGrane; the beautiful princess Jasmine, played by Kylie Hanna; and the evil Jafar, played by Maddie Heverin. The show differs from the animated movie in that Aladdin has three friends rather than a pet monkey, and Jasmine has friends rather than a tiger. Additional songs include “Proud of Your Boy,” sung by Aladdin about how he had always wanted to make his mother proud of him. Jasmine and her friends sing “These Palace Walls,” a song that suggests she feels trapped in her role as a princess. Audiences will recognize many of the catchy and well-known favorites, including “A Whole New World.” Trescavage noted that choreographing “A Friend Like Me,” which is sung when See “Aladdin Jr.” pg 4

ways to help her son, who has developmental differences. In 2007, she moved to an area outside Washington, D.C., where she discovered a town filled with art galleries. “They had First Fridays,” she recalled. “You could just walk into a studio, and there would be a model, and you could just sit and sketch. As an artist, I just loved it. It was therapeutic for me.” In 2008, at an art festival, she met Myers, whom she affectionately calls “Nobie” because he likes to be known as Mr. Nobody Special. “We immediately connected,” said Montanye, who moved to Ephrata, where Myers was living, and took a job helping to build the Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia. It was at this time that her undiagnosed medical problems became an issue. Instead of driving to Philadelphia to work, she decided to go back to her artistic roots, renting a 10-by-10-foot booth in a Lancaster co-op and later moving to the Stahr Armory. She and Myers began holding art classes. “I started having life drawings, and we would get 30 or 40 people at these workshops,” Montanye said. Working with a ballet school, she was able to have models hold ballet poses for artists to draw. “They were gorgeous,” recalled Montanye. “I had never seen a life drawing workshop where there were ballet dancers doing poses.” In 2012, the first Art of Recycle opened at 27 N. State St., Ephrata. “We taught children’s and adult art workshops,” Montanye said. “We had a craft castle, and after school, children would come and we would have games, snacks, and crafts for them. was a lot of fun.” The store sold donated art supplies, which attracted teachers from urban areas who asked for supplies for free. “If (students) come in without (pens and pencils), they can’t do any schoolwork,” said Montanye, who learned that many teachers were purchasing supplies with their own money. She told the teachers to take what they needed. As word started to spread, she opened a Free Teacher Resource Area, now located in the basement of the current Art of Recycle at 27 Cloister Ave., Ephrata. Because the Art of Recycle is dedicated to raising the sense of community, people are welcome to volunteer or take part in activities that encourage socialization. “Anyone with a disability is welcome,” said Montanye, who noted that area organizations that aid those with special needs visit the store and senior centers bring memory care patients for classes. Injured workers volunteer at the center as part of their recovery program. A variety of free clubs meet in the evenings, and classes, workshops, teas, and a variety of other activities are offered for a nominal cost. The Art of Recycle has opened a second center in Hanover, and Montanye and Myers have written a book titled “The Art Of Recycle - Creating Community Centers Through Landfill Resources.” Hours and more information about the many offerings of the Art of Recycle may be found at www.artofrecycle.org. LBC from pg 1 “If I was getting the abuse Charlie Brown gets from friends and (his sister), Sally, I would not be as even keeled and tempered as he is,” shared David Felty. “I would be upset. (But Charlie Brown) stays the course and is true to his character and, in the end, even Lucy, his biggest nemesis, realizes that he is a great guy.” Felty is advising Lancaster Bible College (LBC) junior Cassidy Wray Martin, who is directing the production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” The play will be staged in the Good Shepherd Chapel at LBC, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Friday, April 3, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, April 4, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, April 5, at 2 p.m. LBC senior Kayla Velasquez is choreographing with advice from Heather Grayberg. “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” was written in 1967 by Clark Gesner and is a musical based on the “Peanuts” cartoons created by Charles M. Schulz. The show consists of various vignettes to stage a typical day in the life of Charlie Brown, along with his dog, Snoopy. Characters such as Schroeder, Lucy, and Linus all make

appearances, with a number of group songs to tie the narrative together. Musical numbers include “My Blanket and Me,” “The Kite,” “T-E-A-M (The Baseball Game),” “Little Known Facts,” “Suppertime,” and “Beethoven Day.” According to Felty and Martin, songs that should follow audience members home will include “My New Philosophy” and “Happiness.” LBC has chosen to double-cast most roles in the show to give more students opportunities to perform. Casts will include Seth Jerabek and Dan Martin as Charlie Brown, Melody Griffith and Tori Nicktern as Lucy, Britt Jarkowsky and Abigail Simiele as Sally, Brad Myer and Braden Krikke as Linus, Zach Fernback and Rachel Potter as Snoopy, and Miles Brouillette as Schroeder. According to Felty, this particular show will be produced with rehearsals having been held only on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays. Martin noted that while all the shows staged at LBC are part of the educational process, as part of a class, this show has a deliberate focus on learning, so character development is a concentration of the effort. “We are hoping the students bring their own life to the character,” said Felty. “They

(Each student) can find their own interpretation of the character.” The show will utilize costumes that suggest the characters and personify Snoopy the beagle, who will have dialogue and sing and tap dance. Felty, a professed “Peanuts” fan, said he loves the show because it is simply fun. “It’s totally designed for children to enjoy … (and it) is based on the actual cartoon. Even the songs come out of (the comic strip).” Martin agreed with Felty. “It’s super fun,” she said, adding, “My dad is really looking forward to this show.” Tickets to the show may be purchased at www.lbc.edu /events. After a four-year absence, West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) is bringing back its popular potpie dinner in a new format. The dinner, set for Friday, March 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the school, will now be served restaurant-style, with additional servings brought upon request. The meal will include homemade chicken potpie, pepper cabbage, applesauce, a fruit cup, a roll and butter, a choice of beverage and chocolate or vanilla cake for dessert. The meal will be served by teachers, students and volunteers. “It’s all-you-can-eat. Our waiters and waitresses will bring you a refill of everything you want,” said Heather Olseski, who is organizing the event along with Heather Herr and other volunteers. “We wanted to

try to get away from serving family-style. Everything will come individually portioned, and you can ask for more.” The previous version of the potpie dinner was a popular fall event held in conjunction with the school’s annual benefit auction. Over the years, the two events required so many volunteer hours in one weekend that the potpie meal was discontinued. “Doing potpie and auction on the same weekend required an army of people,” WFCS principal Robbie Martin said, explaining the reason for eliminating the potpie dinner. “The hope had always been that we would reignite it.” As time went on, people realized how much they missed the potpie dinner experience, particularly the connection it provided between the school and the community.

“We miss that connection with the community, getting people to come in, meeting new people and alumni (in attendance). Our dream is to try to get potpie back to the fall where it was before,” Olseski said. “It was a spur-of-the-moment thing to get it together (this year) to not let another year go by.” “One of the things that has come out loud and clear for us is we have to go back to go forward. We’ve kind of lost a little bit of touch with the community, and potpie really used to provide that,” Martin said. “We’d like to reignite it because we’d like to reconnect with people that we haven’t seen for a while. We really didn’t want to wait for the fall. That was too long. We thought we’d give it a kickoff in the spring, but eventually it will make its way back to the fall.” The recipe for the potpie remains the same, and so does the school’s love for its community. “West Fallowfield is looking

CSC Wins Award, Plans Amish-Style Dinner in translational and precision medicine. The organization is primarily supported through community fundraising events and donations. CSC supporters typically host several auctions throughout Pennsylvania and Ohio each year to raise funds for the clinic. A new fundraiser has been added to the calendar. Kumme Essa, named for the Pennsylvania Dutch phrase for “come eat,” will be held on Thursday, April 2, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Springside Barn, 1294 Weaverland Road, East Earl. The Pennsylvania Dutchinspired dinner will feature a twist on a traditional Amish wedding meal served familystyle by members of the Plain community in a restored barn. The evening will include remarks from CSC physicians and clients’ families as well as a live auction. Platinum-level sponsors will also have an

Celtic Classic Dog Show Set

opportunity to share a few comments during the program. There is a cost to attend Kumme Essa, and reservations are requested by Thursday, March 19. Special pricing for groups of eight or more people are available through the sponsorship packages. Tickets may be purchased at https://clinic forspecialchildren.org/events/ dinner/, or individuals may stop by the clinic. For more information on sponsorship opportunities, readers may contact Seitz at 717-687-9407 or eseitz@clinicforspecial children.org. To learn more about the CSC, individuals may visit https://clinicforspecial children.org.

The York Kennel Club, along with the Delaware County and Lancaster kennel clubs, will present the annual Celtic Classic all-breed dog show from Wednesday, March 11, to Sunday, March 15. Events will start each day at 8 a.m. at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave., York. Approximately 1,800 entries will be on hand each day from March 11 through Friday, March 13, with approximately 3,000 entries on Saturday, March 14, and on March 15. There will also be more than 20 specialty breed shows and educational seminars during the Classic. Dog show tours will be offered

daily, Canine Good Citizen testing will take place on March 11, and Wicket and Scales presentations will be given daily by American Kennel Club representative James Mitchell. Admission will be free, and vendors and concessions will be available. Readers may visit http://wp.thecelticclassic.net for specific breed locations and judging times, special event times, building locations, and a full list of vendors. Only dogs registered in the show are allowed on-site. For the safety of the humans and canines present, no strollers are permitted in the show or grooming areas.
