PVIS To Present “High School Musical” By Ann Mead Ash

When director Alicia Trescavage chose “High School Musical” for this year’s Pequea Valley Intermediate School (PVIS) spring show, she was thinking of giving her students wideranging theater experience. “We did ‘The Addams Family’ last year, which was very dark,” recalled Trescavage. “I wanted to keep it interesting and give the students some variety.” The plot of “High School Musical” focuses on two teenagers - Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez - who have never tried out to be in a show before. Kianna Winey will play Gabriella, a shy, geeky math whiz, opposite Joel Peifer as Troy, a basketball star, in the PVIS production of the show, which will be performed in the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS)

auditorium, 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers. Shows will be held on Friday, March 29, at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, March 30, at 2 and 7 p.m. The story opens with Troy and Gabriella meeting at a ski lodge on New Year’s Eve. They sing karaoke together and exchange phone numbers. When the students return to school, Troy notices Gabriella in his homeroom and learns that she has transferred to East High School. Both decide to try out for parts in the school musical, and, despite a few mishaps, both are offered callbacks for the lead characters. At this point, Sharpay Evans, who will be played by Ruthie LaCorte and Olivia Ross in alternate performances, and her twin brother, Ryan Evans, played by Nick Ammon, decide to interfere with the auditions and eliminate competition for the leading roles they aspire to fill. See “High School Musical” pg 7

Members of the cast of the Pequea Valley Intermediate School production of “High School Musical” are practicing to present the show at Pequea Valley High School on March 29 and 30.

Program Will Focus On Art Of Myrtle Tremblay By Ann Mead Ash

In 1952, Myrtle Tremblay and her husband, Louis, moved to New Holland when Louis secured a job with New Holland Machine. Tremblay was an established painter when she came to New Holland, but when she discovered the bucolic scenes of eastern Lancaster County, her art took a different turn. “Myrtle Tremblay - An EverChanging Scene” will be presented in the chapel at Garden Spot Village (GSV), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, on Thursday, March 21, at 7 p.m. The presentation will be given by Win Reber, president of the GSV Art Guild, in partnership with the New Holland Area Historical Society. Reber will delve into the evolution of Tremblay’s paintings with regard to styles, subjects, and interpretations. The public is invited to attend.

Reber became interested in Tremblay’s artwork when he was introduced to historical society board member Don Horning, who was working to process a number of pieces of Tremblay’s art that had been bequeathed to the society by her executrix in 2017. “Win caught the vision, and in October 2018 we met and he started working (to help catalog the collection),” said Horning. Reber’s volunteer efforts with the society led him to create a multimedia show on Tremblay’s history and artwork. Tremblay was born in Albion, Mich., in 1908. Initially, she taught herself to draw by copying pictures. When she attended Bay City Junior College, her talent was recognized, and she served as art editor of the school yearbook. She later earned a Bachelor of Science from Central Michigan University. She attended the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania

Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Art Center in New York. In the 1940s, she sketched servicemen and servicewomen for the United Services Organization in Detroit and the American Theater Wing in New York City. Beginning in 1937, she traveled to South America, Europe, and Asia, along with the northwest United States, painting scenes from her journey. Tremblay lived to be 102, spending her final years at GSV. She remained a student of art well into her 90s, and her works were displayed and sold throughout the county, often to help raise funds for local organizations. She received many awards for her work. Reber, who is originally from Elgin, Ill., graduated from Cornell College in 1964, where he worked extensively with the art professors with regard to presentations on art history and museum shows. After graduating from

Cornell, Reber moved to Wayne and began teaching art at Radnor Township schools. He later received a master’s degree in art education from Kutztown College. While teaching in Radnor Township, Reber served as curator for the Rosemont Collection of Art and learned art restoration and bolstered his knowledge of the lives and history of various artists. He began holding art lectures on various art-related topics for community groups. In 2004, Reber and his wife, Carolyn, moved to GSV. Following retirement, Reber began exhibiting watercolors in Lancaster County and in Maine, where he owns a home, and lecturing in both locations. He was involved in founding the Art Guild at GSV, which puts on shows of local artists in the community’s Main Street Gallery. Beginning on Monday, April 1, “The Unseen Works of Myrtle

to make the cheerleading bows and can get pom-poms,” said Trescavage. Trescavage pointed out that the show will be the acting debut for many of the students taking part, but she added that they are showing a great deal of energy and enthusiasm. “It takes a lot of courage,” she noted, adding that when rehearsals move to PVHS, she will see a change in the students. “When we move to the big stage … it gets real,” she said. “They realize they will be in front of an audience doing this, and they encourage and support each other, which is wonderful.” While all generations should be able to relate to the message of “High School Musical,” which

Trescavage said is to “be yourself and not be afraid to be judged for doing what you love,” the story resonates strongly with students in middle and high school. “This is a time where you find yourself and your place,” said Trescavage. “(Students) may be hesitant to do certain things because they are afraid of what other people will say or think, but it’s an opportunity to learn some resilience and rise above that and work on confidence.” Separate ticket prices have been set for adults and for students and seniors. Children age 4 and under will be admitted for free. Tickets may be purchased at www.pequeavalley.org or at the door.

Tremblay,” consisting of more than 20 pieces of Tremblay’s early work, will be displayed in The Harvest Table Hallway at GSV. The exhibit will be a smaller version of a larger show that will open in May at the New Holland Area Historical Society. Horning noted that rather than Lancaster County scenery, the display will include paintings created in Latin and South America, as well as Europe. Readers who wish to know more about the historical society may visit http://nhhistorical.com or search for “New Holland Area Historical Society” on Facebook.

Win Reber

“High School Musical” from pg 1 The show boasts 10 songs, a few of which will involve the full cast of up to 45 students. Showstopping numbers include “Stick to the Status Quo” and “Breaking Free,” along with “We’re All in This Together.” Trescavage noted that the students in the cast are familiar with the material. “The (students) know it even though most of them weren’t born when it came out,” said Trescavage. Although it is helpful to be working with students who already know much of the material, Trescavage, who is being assisted by Mindy Lapp, noted that is not necessarily advantage. “Teaching the harmony to songs they already know is a challenge for

me,” admitted Trescavage. Trescavage noted that the show is heavily choreographed, but PVHS junior Megan Arment, who is a cheerleader, is working with the boys on the basketball scenes and with the girls on the cheerleading choreography. “She is doing a fantastic job,” said Trescavage. Costuming the show is a fun aspect of the production, according to Trescavage, who has enlisted Jennifer Schmitt as costumer. Old Braves uniforms will be recycled for use by the basketball players in the show, with the word “Braves” changed to “Wildcats.” Trescavage has also reached out to parents of student actors for help with costumes. “We have moms who know how

IU 13 will hold an ESY Job Fair on Wednesday, March 20, at the Conference and Training Center, 1020 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, from 3 to 6 p.m. Most programs, which are based out of more than a dozen locations, run from 8 a.m. to noon on Mondays through Thursdays, but one location will hold a full-day program. Classes will not be held on Thursday, July 4. According to Katie Schultz, ESY program supervisor, the program is for students determined to be eligible based on their individualized education plans and their local school district’s team. Students who are matriculating within the IU 13 go through a similar process. “Students who are eligible are selected for referral based on regression and recoupment skills,” said Schultz. “(Eligible students) receive instruction in areas where their teams have determined they need to maintain to be successful in the next school year,” she stated, adding that students in kindergarten through 12th grade and up to age 21 in certain circumstances will be served by the program. “ We keep the (student’s) placement the same as during the school year, so if they’re in a self-contained classroom, we keep that the same and by grade level and location,” explained Schultz. In 2018, ESY served 600 students, but Schultz noted that this year more than 1,000 students may take part because districts that previously ran their own programs have decided to partner with the IU 13. Johns stated that the expanded program will mean that increased staff must be hired. “To support the number of classrooms and students, we will need more than 400 staff members,” said Johns, who added that although a number of IU 13 staff members will probably sign on, more employees will be needed.

“It’s a nice summer job, and it’s an opportunity to get some experience,” shared Johns. “We provide a lot of training prior to the onset of ESY on working with students on the autism spectrum, those in multiple disabilities classrooms, first aid, and CPR,” she said, adding, “We make sure we have staff that is a mix of experienced with newer staff.” Readers who are interested in more information may visit www.iu13.org. For answers to specific questions, individuals may email hr@iu13.org or call 717-606-1738. To complete an application for an on-site interview during the job fair, applicants may visit www.iu13.org/ ESYapply.

Miller Wrestles to District Fourth Place by Ara Grigorian

Pequea Valley’s wrestling team was represented by four tough competitors at the Southeast Regionals of the PIAA Class 2A wrestling championships. The regionals took place at Wilson High School on Friday and Saturday, March 1-2. Gabe Miller, a senior with a regional championship already among his career achievements, wrestled his way past some formidable foes as he went on to win the title at the 145-pound weight class. Meanwhile, Jace Beegle finished fourth at 113, also earning a trip with Miller to the PIAA 2A state tournament at the Giant Center. In addition, Dylan Jackson and Joey Coblentz wrestled at Wilson, with the latter making it to the quarterfinals of the 220-pound class. Miller pinned Andrew Cerniglia of Notre Dame Green Pond late in the third period of the title match. Cerniglia held a lead for much of the match until Miller pulled even and

finally registered the pin at the 5:39 mark of the match. In the quarterfinals on Friday, Miller held on for a 9-4 victory over Jordan Rosengrant of Saucon Valley and started his wrestling on Saturday with a narrow 5-4 decision against Nathan Haubert of Palisades in the semis. Significant in the championship for Miller, who had earned last years’ title at 132, was that he toppled the top three wrestlers from District Eleven. Beegle won a pair of matches on Friday at 113. He had a technical fall in the first round and a thirdperiod pin in the quarterfinals, where he downed Christian Doi of Camp Hill at the 5:30 mark. Beegle advanced to the semis with Miller. In Saturday’s semifinal, Adam Jacob of East Pennsboro managed to eke out a 4-0 victory, forcing Beegle into the consis where he faced a familiar foe. Beegle pinned Matthew Inman of Annville-Cleona early in the match, needing only 1:15 to notch the fall.

That victory advanced Beegle to the third-place match where Luke Fegley of Middletown came up with a narrow escape, topping the Pequea sophomore 1-0. At 220, Beegle came up short against Tyrone Fowler of Bishop McDevitt in the fifth-place match on Saturday. His quest in the regionals began with an 11-1 major decision on Friday, downing Patrick Whittle of Lower Moreland. Suffering a pin in the quarterfinals to Jim Thorpe’s Ethan Mordaunt caused him to wrestle back in the consolations with a vengeance, notching a pin against Susquenita’s Slade Figard 4:15 into that bout. He also had a 3-1 decision in overtime, defeating Donny Gelnett of Upper Dauphin. But a tough 9-4 loss to Ethan Rode of Newport in the next round sent him to the fifth-place match. Ryan Vulakh of Pope John Paul II earned a second-period pin over Jackson at 152. Jackson had to forfeit at the consolations.

from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 30. Those who bring items to the meet may also buy and sell items. An auction will be held at 11 a.m. Tables, food, and auctioning will all be by donation. There is no admission fee. “It is fun,” shared Harbaugh. “It’s (a gathering of) musicians, face painters, jugglers, clowns, and circus (performers).” Harbaugh added that in the past entertainers have brought musical instruments, speakers, amplifiers, microphones, and even all the apparatus to perform as a disc jockey. “Those who have large illusions (to sell) may bring photos of them,” noted Harbaugh. Each year, organizers ask participants, who come from four states in addition to Pennsylvania, what steps might be taken to improve the event. Based on suggestions, the auction portion was added last year, and this year the public is being invited. “Anyone who participates in the auction may donate a percentage (of the money they make to Steps to Success),” said Harbaugh, who added that funds raised will be used to purchase classroom supplies. Food items that will be available by donation at the swap meet will include doughnuts, hot dogs, chips, snacks, beverages, and baked goods. Along with opportunities to buy, sell, and swap entertainment supplies and equipment, the event, which is also billed as a “micro convention in Amish country,” is a chance for entertainers to network. Harbaugh said that aspiring entertainers are welcome. “(The swap meet is) a good place to get supplies or (connect) with groups,” she stated. More information about the swap meet is available by searching for “Entertainers’ Swap Meet” on Facebook. Readers who would like to know more about Steps to Success may search on Facebook for “Steps to Success Christian Early Learning Center” or call 717-656-3363.
