A chance to touch the future
BY ANN MEAD ASH
When Christa McAuliffe said, “I touch the future,” she was referring to her role as a teacher, but Pequea Valley-area residents and businesses have an opportunity to touch the future by helping to fund the Pequea Valley Early Learning program. “There are a variety of ways for (individuals) and businesses to support our program,” said Lisa Eckert, director of early learning for the Pequea Valley School District (PVSD).
Early learning in PVSD focuses on a child’s development from birth to age 5. The program includes outreach activities such as Welcome Baby Brave Kits, the Imagination Library, and Read Under the Lights. Monthly Play and Learns are group activities that foster parent and child interaction and provide child development information. Kindergarten transition activities help prepare incoming kindergartners to
start school, and home visits using the Parents as Teachers Curriculum encourage parent and child interaction and family well-being.
Eckert explained that funding sources, such as grants and partnerships, have sustained many of the programs over the years, but certain offerings are now in need of fresh funding streams. One of those programs is the Imagination Library, a book gifting program that provides free books for young children.
“Thirty dollars will support Imagination Library for one child (for a year),” Eckert said. The situation with Welcome Baby Brave Kits, which also promote literacy, is similar in that a funding stream is not available, but $35 will cover a kit.
Eckert pointed out that kindergarten transition programs, which had been funded by a grant, are now in need of revenue. Scholarships that support this program are specifically designated to help families who have preschool-age
children but do not necessarily qualify for other assistance programs. “There are a couple programs for families of preschoolers, but they have to meet specific income levels,” explained Eckert. “We have Pre-K Counts and Head Start slots, and (families) have to meet certain criteria to qualify for those,” she pointed out. “We are finding there are families who make too much (to qualify) but not enough to cover the cost of a full-time preschool program themselves,” said Eckert who noted that preschool costs about $6,000 a year per student. Eckert added that the amount of funding provided to a family can be tailored to meet community needs.
The work of the Pequea Valley Early Learning program has already borne fruit. Based on the IU13 transition indicator screening that is used with all incoming kindergartners, PVSD

“It’s been around a few years,” said Alicia Trescavage of the musical she is directing at Pequea Valley Intermediate School (PVIS). The musical is the mother-daughter saga known as “Freaky Friday,” which dates back to the original 1976 movie and the 2003 remake. The concept behind the film eventually became a Disney Channel musical.
The one-act musical version of “Freaky Friday” will be produced in the Pequea Valley High School auditorium, 4033 E. Newport Road, See PVIS pg 11
students have shown a steady increase since 2019. “I would say that from 2019 to 2022, our percentage has increased by 27% in kindergarten
readiness,” said Eckert. “(The ways in which) we are reaching our families is connected (to that statistic).”

Taking a seat at the table
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Margaret Thatcher once said, “If you want something done, ask a woman.” There’s a whole lot getting done in Lancaster County, because for the first time ever, all of the Chambers of Commerce in the county are led by women. Each woman brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to her role, but all of the leaders share a common goal: They want to make their community a great place to live and work.
Denise Grove, who started her role as executive director of the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce in February of 2022,
said the job offers her a way to really connect with others. “As a lifetime resident of Elizabethtown, I had a strong desire to work where I could make a difference and be a part of strengthening our community,” she remarked, a sentiment shared by Heather Valudes, who has been president and CEO of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce since June of 2022. “I love Lancaster and the work that we are able to advance to make our employer community as strong as possible,” she said, noting that the Lancaster Chamber is countywide and represents nearly 1,500 businesses, almost half of the county’s workforce.

For Ashley Zell, who became executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce in January, the job brings a chance to get to know her community. “The friends and connections made and the interaction with the Chamber members and community at our numerous different events are definitely the biggest rewards of this position,” Zell said.
The women also remarked that holding the job offers a chance to see their communities thrive. “It’s seeing kids dancing at the farmers market,” commented Rebecca Branle, who has been executive director of Venture Lititz since August of 2021. “It’s celebrating big wins with merchants. It’s watching this town become ever more alive with art, culture and community pride.” Her perspective matches that of Kristie Schmid, who has been executive director of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce since March of 2021. “I love seeing our community respond to the revitalization in town, the increase in businesses and the new community events,” Schmid said. “It’s fulfilling to put your time into something and then see others have pride in it as well.”
For some of the Chamber leaders, the role is a full-time job. For others, it’s something they do in addition to other employment. As a financial adviser for Edward Jones, Jona Green serves as head of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce on a volunteer basis, but she’s just as committed to that role as she is her paid job. “The biggest reward is absolutely the connection to our schools and community,” said Green, who has been leading her Chamber since March of 2022. “Our reach is large, but our heart is rooted in service and making more
things possible for our members.”
Although each of the Chambers faces its own challenges, the directors all project positivity when it comes to their communities. “Right now, we see the biggest challenge for a number of our members to be finding enough employees,” said Kerry Meyers, who stepped down as executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce after more than 11 years and is now executive assistant to Zell.
“And for our small shops in Mount Joy, it is getting customers in their doors. We need the community to support small local businesses.”
Liz Ackerman, who has been executive director of the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce since January of 2019, said her organization faces a challenge of keeping pace with expansion. “We are growing at an exponential rate,” she explained, noting that she values maintaining a close connection with all of the Chamber’s 430-plus members. “We pride

We are fortunate to live in an area that has long been regarded as the “Garden Spot of America.” Generational farming is a part of the Lancaster County culture. In fact, we lead the nation in young farmers. According to the most recent Economic Impact study by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, 14% of farms in Pennsylvania had a young producer (defined as someone age 35 or younger) operating as the primary farmer. At last count, Lancaster County had 2,400 young producers, twice as much as the second-ranked county in the nation, LaGrange County, Ind. In addition, Lancaster County leads the nation in farmland preservation, with more than 113,000 acres preserved. As promising as that sounds for the future, we’re still losing more than 1,200 acres of Lancaster County farmland each year to development, according to the Lancaster Farmland Trust (LFT), a nonprofit organization with the mission of preserving agriculture and stewarding the land in Lancaster County. For more information on LFT, visit https://lancasterfarmlandtrust.org.
Farming can be a back-breaking, often undervalued vocation that doesn’t stop at 5 p.m. on Friday. Like we often do with first responders and the military, thank a farmer for his or her service to our community. Look at labels and buy locally. See where your milk, produce, and meat are coming from. When you shop at local supermarkets, if you don’t see local produce in season, ask why the store isn’t pro-
viding locally sourced foods. Encourage the store to offer local produce so shoppers can easily support local farmers. The Lancaster County landscape is dotted with roadside produce stands when crops are in season. Most of these stands and farmers markets won’t open until later in the spring or summer. Below is a list of some of the many locations where you can get fresh local produce, meats, and cheeses.

ourselves on knowing every member’s name and understanding their needs.”
For some of the directors, being a female leader in the world of business has been a challenge they’ve faced with grace. “I have learned to embrace my leadership style and not shy away from opportunities to lead,” said Grove, noting that she attributes her success to surrounding herself with strong female role models. “Confidence in yourself is key. We all belong at the table, so be brave enough to pull up a chair. If you are afraid, do it anyway.”
That’s a feeling Branle said she understands. “My worst enemy has always been the negative voice in my head, telling me to question my worthiness,” she stated. “If you, too, have a voice like that, learn to tell her to be quiet.”
As committed as they are to their Chambers, all of the women have managed to find a work-life balance. Meyers has been married for 45 years and loves spending time with her two children and five grandchildren. Zell is raising a family of three with her husband, and they enjoy hiking and attending Faith Bible Fellowship Church. Valudes is the married mother of twin daughters, serves as secretary for the Paradise Township Lions Club and helps with Girl Scouts. Grove and her husband enjoy spending time with their seven children and eight grandchildren, and Grove is active with the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown, where she will serve as president beginning
in 2025. Ackerman and her husband are raising two children, and she describes herself as a “serial volunteer” with numerous organizations. Branle and her husband have three children, and the family loves to bike, travel and play “very competitive family football games.” Green and her husband are raising two children who are active in their high school’s marching band, and she joked that her favorite hobby is “networking.” Schmid has been married for 22 years, has three girls and loves to read, shop and explore local breweries.
As for advice for other female leaders, each woman referenced striking a balance between being assertive and being kind. “Work with integrity,” Zell stated. “Be willing to humble yourself. Be respectful of others in the workplace and the community.”
Ackerman advised that women should also be kind to themselves. “Own your talents and always accept a compliment,” she remarked. “This is one of the hardest things to learn, but recognizing your strengths, especially when someone points them out to you, provides a confidence that will reach far beyond anything you can read in a book.”
And don’t underestimate what you can achieve, Schmid said, adding, “Never limit yourself. Find your passion and put your all into developing it so you can bring your best to the table.”

The Friends of the Moores Memorial Library in Christiana have a message for those who love to read: “Please come and buy books.”
The Friends’ spring book sale will take place in the Read Moore Book Store, located in the lower level of
the library, 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. The sale will start on Thursday, March 16, from 1 to 7 p.m. and then continue during regular library hours on Friday, March 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday, March 18, from 8 a.m. to noon.
Admission is free.
As part of the three-day clearance
sale, visitors will be able to fill a bag with books for a set price or purchase individual materials. Bags will be provided. “We are spring cleaning to make room for future new donations,” said Jeannette Kolb, Friends vice president.
Also for sale will be large selection of puzzles, music CDs and
movies on Blu-ray and DVD, which shoppers will be able to fit into a bag for a set price. “If you have a favorite movie and want to own it, we probably have it here,” said Kolb. There will be plenty of cookbooks and children’s books for sale, as well as paperback and hardback adult fiction. “The fiction will be sorted by prolific authors - Nora Roberts, Danielle Steele and Stuart Woods,’’ Kolb noted. “We have a whole table of James Patterson (books). Some of them are from the library, but some look like they have never been opened.”
Special items, rare books and collectible titles will also be available and individually priced.
Displaying some of the items that will be for sale are (from left) Karen Woods, Kate Valentino and Jeannette Kolb.

The show tells the story of a mother and daughter who somehow swap bodies for 24 hours. By spending a day in each other’s shoes, mother Katherine, played by Taylor Gentzler, and daughter Ellie, played by Kennedy Haley, come to a new understanding of each other and a better realization of the immeasurable love and mutual respect that bond them together. Trescavage said she chose the show for several reasons. “It’s a fun show and you can set it whenever you want (in time),” she said, noting that setting the story in the present made costuming easier. “‘Freaky Friday’ also offers many ensemble roles, but also parts for strong singers and actors,” Trescavage pointed out. The director lauded Haley and Gentzler for their hard work in what are essentially dual roles. “When they switch bod-

All the proceeds from the spring book sale as well as sales from the Read Moore Book Store help support the many programs offered by the library.
Those who visit the Read Moore Book Store will notice that items are displayed on unique shelving, including a canoe and a baby grand piano. There are bookshelves made from rain gutters, and the young adult section features books displayed on skateboards. Since the library’s building once was home to a bank, shoppers can find rare and unique books in the “vault.”
The Read Moore Book Store is open on Mondays through Fridays from 1 to 4 p.m. and on and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. The store is staffed and maintained by volunteers from the Friends group. For more information, visit www.face book.com/ReadMooreBookStore.
Additional volunteers are needed. Prospective members are invited to visit www.christianalibrary.org/friends for more information.

ies, they have to take on a different personality,” Trescavage said. “They have to do a character study of each other.” Other cast members include Carissa Lapp as Monica, Kelsey DellaRova as Savannah, and Anneliese Watson as Kitty.
As a musical, Trescavage noted, the 90-minute production features “Oh, Biology,” which she said audience members will hum on the way out of the theater, along with “Watch Your Back” and “Go.” Nailing down the dance steps has challenged some of the 28 cast mem-
bers, Trescavage reported, but choreographer Katie Adams of LanCo Performing Arts has been practicing with the students to help polish performances.
Trescavage has spent time working with students to understand the message of the show, which is so pertinent to teenagers. “(I asked) ‘Would you want to change places with your parents?’” Trescavage stated, noting that cast members reported that they were not ready to be adults. The question inspired conversation about the subject, and

students wondered how parents would fare spending a day in middle school. “School changes year to year and generation to generation,” said Trescavage. “With their parents, problems were left at school,” she noted, emphasizing the difference from the current age of technology and prevalence of social media. Students also discussed the struggles they feel they undergo to be taken seriously by adults. “The moral is at the end (of the show) they have an appreciation for each other,” said Trescavage.

39TH SEMI-ANNUAL Lawn, Garden & ATV Consignment Auction SAT., MARCH 25TH, 2023
Did you know?
Farmers and growers face a significant threat in the years to come as industrial agriculture operations continue to expand. According to the National Resources Defense Council, industrial agriculture is the large-scale, intensive production of crops and animals. Such operations make it more difficult for small farmers and growers to turn a profit, and they often involve the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The use of such products
poses an additional threat to small farmers and growers, as the Union of Concerned Scientists notes that the heavy application of fertilizers and pesticides accelerates soil erosion and increases pest problems. Consumers concerned by the effects of industrial agriculture on the environment and on small farmers’ and growers’ ability to earn a good living can support efforts such as regenerative farming and organic farms.
