Easter egg-stravaganza planned
BY ANN MEAD ASHPequea
Evangelical Congregational (E.C.) Church, 5482 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, began holding an Easter egg hunt a few years ago. Pastor Jesse Bills noted that the event has grown steadily, attracting about 150 people last year.
The Easter egg hunt, which is open to area children from 3 years of age to sixth grade, will be held on Friday, March 31, beginning at 6:30 p.m. “We have held them on the Friday of Palm Sunday weekend,” said Bills, who noted that participants will register at a table inside the church when they arrive.
The event will begin with a video presenting the Gospel message of Easter. Following the video, participants will move outside to the church yard, where the egg hunt will be held. “We will have 2,000 eggs,” said Bills, who noted that church members fill the eggs with individually wrapped pieces of candy prior to distributing them in the church yard.
Following the egg hunt, the church will hold a movie night. “We will pick (a few) movies, and people will vote on which one we will show that night,” said Bills, who noted that the film selections will include “VeggieTales: An Easter Carol” and “It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown,” “The Prince of Egypt,” and “The Jungle Book.” Free refreshments that will be served during the movie will include hot dogs, popcorn, and snacks.
Holy Week services at the church will include a service on Good Friday, April 7, from noon to 3 p.m. Participating congregations, in addition ot Pequea E.C., will be Pequea Presbyterian, Limeville United Methodist Church, and Mount Airy E.C. Church, with a representative from each church focusing on the theme of “Predictions of the Cross.” “Each speaker will discuss an Old Testament prediction of the cross,” Bills explained.
On Easter Sunday, April 9, a sunrise service will be held outdoors at the church at 7 a.m. “We will have a short message and live music outside,” said Bills, who added that
following the service, brunch will be served inside the church, followed by the traditional Easter Sunday service at 9 a.m. More information about the church may be found by searching for “Pequea Church” on Facebook. Readers who have questions about any of the church Easter events may email pequeaevents@gmail.com.
Swap meet to aid Steps to Success
BY ANN MEAD ASHNearly a decade ago, Tait Harbaugh, better known as Papa Tater, comedian, magician, and entertainer for people of all ages, had an idea. Having watched his fellow entertainers and experienced his own overload of purchasing magic tricks when he first began performing, Papa Tater thought that maybe a swap meet would be a great way to make some of his extra inventory disappear and help support Steps to Success, a nonprofit Christian preschool and day care service directed by his wife, Michelle Harbaugh.

Pequea Evangelical Congregational Church will hold an Easter egg hunt followed by a number of activities to celebrate Holy Week.
Sharing the burden
BY ANN MEAD ASHThere is an old saying that “many hands make light work.” Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC), in partnership with We Rise International and with the help of a grant from LMC Legacy Foundation, would like to lighten the burden of area faith leaders with regard to the mental health of their communities.
Leaders of all faiths in Lancaster, York, Lebanon, and Adams counties are invited to “Guiding Faith Leaders on Mental Health,” a breakfast scheduled to be held on Wednesday, March 29, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
at the Eden Resort, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster. Seating is limited and registration must be made by Wednesday, March 22. There is a nominal fee to attend.
Kim McDevitt, director of MHALC, said that the breakfast was inspired in part when she attended a funeral for a young man who died of an overdose. She noted that when the officiant gave the eulogy he began to cry. “He said ‘I wish I could have done more,’” recalled McDevitt. Knowing that experts and resources are available, McDevitt said that MHALC hopes to provide training and support. “We don’t want them to have to carry the burden on their own,” she said.

Speakers at the breakfast will include Dr. Jeffrey D. Hamilton, who will discuss “ministering to persons facing mental illness,” and Janelle Bitikofer, executive director of We Rise International,
which has a Lancaster location. Bitikofer said that We Rise International has conducted in-depth training for faith leaders to teach strategies to reduce stigma and connect them to support. “(Faith leaders) are really instrumental in responding to the needs of their communities,” she said. “They are the people individuals in the faith community go to when they need help and support.” Noting that faith leaders are on the frontlines, she added, “We come alongside them and help them to be able to meet those needs with additional support, information, and linking to community resources.”
“This event will be twofold,” pointed out McDevitt, noting that attendees will be asked to identify a champion from within their community who may have background in mental health and can be supportive of a community member in a struggle. “The champions will be invited to a second event on May 25, which will also be held at the Eden,” explained Margie Lamberson, director of development and communications for MHALC.
“It will be a follow-up educational session for the people who can assist the (faith leaders) as needs arise to lessen the burden.”
“We will provide training to the champions so they can
walk alongside (the faith leaders), who are often tasked with doing that alone without a support system,” said Bitikofer.
McDevitt explained that the champions will then become contact persons between faith communities and MHALC. According to Lamberson, MHALC can then help the champions navigate the complex mental health system, which they are able to provide without charge thanks to the community, foundations, and others who support the work.

When a successful and memorable sports season comes to a close - whether on a season-ending loss or hoisting of a trophy - the players, coaches and followers look back and reflect on the many achievements.
That is how Pequea Valley girls’ basketball coach Jason McDonald looks upon the 2022-23 team.
“This season was a very successful season; it just wasn’t the outcome we wanted,” said McDonald, whose squad suffered a 60-37 loss on Friday, March 10, at Lincoln High School in Philadelphia, where the Braves fell to Imhotep
Charter School in the opening round of the PIAA Class 3A state playoffs.
“The team this year was a joy to coach,” he added. “They worked and practiced hard on their game to get better.”
The Braves trailed the Panthers by only 11 points heading into the fourth quarter of that playoff game. The Panthers outscored the Braves 20-8 in the final period.
This year’s Pequea pack finished with a 22-5 record, tying the program’s record for most victories in a season. Entering the PIAA’s, the Braves had clinched third place in the District Three Class 3A playoffs, also tying the school’s highest finish in district playoffs history.
“We tied the school record for most wins but had the best winning percentage this year,” said McDonald.
Scoring 20 points on the night to lead the Braves was Shania Stoltzfus, who drilled six three-point baskets. The junior is one of the starters McDonald is looking forward to having on next year’s team.
“I’m going to miss the senior class as they worked extremely hard and gave us
excellent leadership,” said McDonald. “We have a tremendous amount of talent coming back next year. We can have as great of a season as this year if we continue to work hard.”
The seniors from this year’s team were Sarah Arment, Madison Clark, Jana Coxta and Brooke Graham.
“These seniors made school history with most wins in a career with 63,” McDonald pointed out. “In three out of four years, they made leagues, district and state playoffs.”
While Brooke Graham led the team in three-point field goal percentage with 35%, Morgan Graham led the team in field goal percentage with 63. Shania Stoltzfus shot 32 percent from three-point range.
One underclassman who helped carry the offense was freshman Janae Patterson. She led the team with 12.2 points per game. She also grabbed 3.8 rebounds per game.
When the LancasterLebanon League all-star selections came out, as voted on by L-L League coaches, Patterson made first-team all-star in Section Four.

SWIMMING
Representing Pequea Valley at the District Three Class 2A Swimming Championships, held at Cumberland Valley High School on Friday and Saturday, March 3-4, were junior Ethan Wanner and his freshman brother, Aidan Wanner.
With Pequea Valley not having a swim team per se, the Wanner brothers, according to dad and swim coach Matt Wanner, worked hard throughout the season to qualify for the L-L League Championships and the District Three meet.
“With the independent swim schools, we have to find teams who will be willing to let us use their open lanes,” Wanner explained. “Lancaster Catholic and McCaskey came in and allowed us to use their empty lanes.”
So, for instance, in a meet with an L-L League rival, McCaskey might allow PV
swimmers to use an empty lane.
“The times and scores for the teams count for their meet,” Wanner went on. “But for Pequea Valley, your swimmers’ times count toward qualifying. If you made some cut-off times, you go to leagues. If you made qualifying times there, you go to districts.”
At districts, Ethan Wanner grabbed fourth place in the 100-yard breaststroke, registering a time of 1:01.48.
“The breaststroke is his favorite,” Wanner said. “He earned a medal and qualified for states.”
In the 200 Individual Medley, Ethan grabbed sixth place (2:05.93) and Aidan earned ninth with his time of 2:09.92.
“Aidan’s time in the 200 IM was his best on the year,” Wanner noted. “He also did the 100 backstroke and got his best time.”
Aidan Wanner reached the podium with his eighth-place time of 58.17 in the 100 back.
Asked if he thought the boys’ perception of the district championship setting may have been unnerving, Wanner replied, “I think they were just a little nervous. But they channeled that into adrenaline. It made for faster races for them.”
TENNIS
The Pequea boys’ tennis team won its season-opening match at Penn Manor on Monday, March 6, by a 6-1 score as Cole Stoltzfus, Hayden Winey, and Wade Stoltzfus helped lead the way.
In the first doubles match, Cole McEvoy, and Wade Stoltzfus teamed up for an 81 defeat of P.J. Fahey and Cole Troop.
Winey and Cole Stoltzfus won the second doubles match by the same margin.
At number one singles, Wade Stoltzfus posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Fahey. Cole Stoltzfus blanked Troop 6-0, 6-0 at number two singles. Winey came through in dominant fashion at third singles (6-1,
while McEvoy won the fourth singles
Jackson Hershey and Bailey Scott came up short at number three doubles in an 8-4 final.
Steps to Success frompg 1
The event was so successful over the years that what Papa Tater believes to be the seventh Entertainers’ Swap Meet will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola, on Saturday, March 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. More than 40 tables are booked, plus a special swap table where attendees may swap an item of equal value for another or make a donation to Steps in exchange for an item. The event, which is free to visit and open to the public, also includes a magic miniconvention.
While the swap meet is focused on entertainment equipment and props, Papa Tater noted that the door is
left open for tricks. “It’s a room full of entertainers, mostly magicians, and that can be fun,” he said. “You get to walk around and talk to magicians.”
“And they like to show off,” added Michelle.
Papa Tater noted that while the mini-convention is mostly magic oriented, juggling and puppet supplies are often available. “We really never know what will show up, which is part of what I love about this,” he said. “We get a roomful of magicians and some are bigger-name magicians, so the things that show up are incredible … things I never thought I would see in person or something I never
PennDOT seeking public input
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently announced several opportunities for Pennsylvanians to participate in the transportation planning process. Every two years, the State Transportation Commission (STC) and PennDOT update Pennsylvania’s 12-Year Program (TYP), and public feedback is a critical part of that process.
The public comment period for the TYP update will continue through Sunday, April 30. During the public comment period, Pennsylvanians can submit feedback by taking the Transportation Survey at https://survey .talkpatransportation.com/# /Survey or emailing comments to RA-PennDOT STC@pa.gov. Public feedback and survey results will help identify needs and prioritize transportation projects across the state.
PennDOT will also host an online public forum on Wednesday, April 12, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Pennsylvanians can pose transportation-related questions to PennDOT leadership and members of the STC during the public forum.
