Charlotte Lapp, who coordinates the Lifeways for Kids program, which provides weekend food blessings for elementary school students who qualify for free and reduced-cost lunches in Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), is not one to mince words about the situation the program faced in early 2023. “We crashed financially,” said Charlotte, noting that during the COVID-19 shutdown, the program lost touch with area donors and nearly ran out of funds.

Fortunately, the solution was communication. Charlotte, who works with assistant coordinator Darlene Lapp on the project, connected with PVSD social workers to explain the program, and the fluctuating numbers of food packages requested evened-out at about 80. Lapp and others interested in the program began con-

necting to local businesses and local representatives of national chains, and the funds began to come in. Lapp also reached out to churches connected to The Factory Ministries. “They are interested in being part of (meeting) the needs of the community,” said Charlotte. “Now I have a list of churches I can contact.”

Within a month, the program had raised enough to finish the year.

“Now we are securing funds for the ’23-24 school year,” said Charlotte, who has begun speaking to churches and local civic groups, taking along a food pack to show audience members the types of food items sent home.

As part of the program, volunteers from about five area churches gather at Ridgeview Mennonite Church, 3723 Ridge Road, Gordonville, each Wednesday at 9 a.m. from October through the end of the school year to pack the bags of food to be sent home on

… And Bingo was his name-o:

Lori Breece, manager with United Disabilities Services (UDS) service dogs, remembers the successful bingo event the organization held in 2019. “At that time that was our largest fundraiser to date,” said Breece, who noted that the event garnered funds to help raise the 16 puppies that are trained yearly to become service dogs. The average cost of the first year of training one dog is $3,000.

The UDS bingo fundraiser will return to the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, on Sunday, April 16. Doors will open at noon, and the first game will start at 1:30 p.m. Tickets, which are necessary to attend, will be discounted through Friday, April 14. Each ticket includes 20 games. Players must be age 18 or older, and tickets are limited. Food and beverage items will be available for purchase.

weekends with children who attend Salisbury or Paradise elementary schools. Lifeways for Kids provides sustainable, supplemental food for area students. Lapp works to keep the food provided by Lifeways at a certain

nutritional standard. Regularly included items may be macaroni and cheese, microwavable meals, soup, noodle dishes, juice, applesauce, granola bars, crackers and cheese, popcorn, and hot chocolate. The program also provides

hygiene kits, which include a new towel, a hairbrush, a bar of soap, a container of shampoo, toothpaste, and a toothbrush. At Christmas, a blanket, a pair of sweatpants, and two pairs of socks are given to each participating child.

Second Grace seeks volunteers

Understanding the need for young single mothers to have mentors, Candace Abel created Second Grace. The program matches “Graces” - the mothers - with “Sages” - trained advocates for the mothers. During the initial training period for the Sages, Abel was impressed by the background and passion of one of the volunteers, Deb Louie. She soon asked Louie to join the organization as program coordinator for Second Grace.

“I really identified with Candy’s vision,” said Louie, whose background includes 10 years working with Dauphin County Children and Youth and 13 years in mental health counseling. With Louie on board, Second

Grace is looking for more mentors. The organization will hold information sessions from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12; from 9 to 11 a.m. or 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 15; and from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 22. The sessions will be held at Second Grace, 1610 Landis Road, Mount Joy. Currently, Second Grace has a core group of six Sages. The goal is to match each of the young mothers one-on-one with a Sage, who will make a two-year commitment to work with the mother. “It takes about six to 10 hours a month to serve as a Sage,” Louie stated. “The Sages can talk to the Graces on the phone, meet in person to do things, go to appointments with them or do whatever they need for support.”

Breece noted that the UDS fundraiser is a little different from some other bingo events. “We allow people to pick their own prizes, and I think that kind of sets us apart,” she said, noting that the option started years ago. “So if somebody wins and they want that Kate Spade

bag, they can get it,” she shared.

“That has been well received.”

Breece, administrative assistant Jennifer King, and other staff members, have been gathering prizes for the event, focusing on experiences.

Breece described a tasting tour at Allegro Winery that includes cheese, crackers, a souvenir glass, and a free bottle of wine. “We have a 50-minute

traditional massage and lunch in the Oasis at the Spa at The Hotel Hershey,” said Breece. Another prize will be an experience for six at The Brewery of Hershey, which includes a guided tour of production operations and concludes with a tasting of products paired with local cheese, chocolates, and dried fruit. Four tickets to Hershey Gardens will be among the

prizes, and organizers are working on putting together an overnight trip to Baltimore with National Aquarium tickets. Breece also hopes to have a Gettysburg excursion to give away, and King noted that Longwood Gardens tickets and sports memorabilia items associated with the 76ers, Flyers, Steelers, and Eagles are being gathered. Door prizes, special games with cash prizes, and other giveaways will be included at the event.

UDS service dogs are perhaps best known for helping individuals with mobility issues or autism. These dogs train for more than two years before they are partnered with an individual for whom they may open and close doors, retrieve objects, and more. Charlie, the black Labrador puppy that posed cooperatively with bingo cards for this article, began his training at 11 weeks. “Normally puppies start our program at 8 weeks,” said Breece, who noted that in spite of starting a little late, the pup is doing well. “(Charlie) has been a shining star,” she stated.

Readers who would like tickets may email karens@udservices.org or call 717-397-1841. Organizations, businesses, and individuals wishing to help sponsor a puppy may email lorig@udservices.org or call 717-715-8753.

To prepare for the role as a mentor, the Sages receive 25 to 30 hours of training, covering everything from substance use and mental health concerns to cultural issues and confidentiality. Training will include both in-person and online aspects, and Sages will also attend monthly Sage Tune-up Education Engagement Readiness (STEER) meetings.

For their part, the Graces will work directly with their assigned Sage and will also participate in Grace Gatherings, social meetings for the mothers to learn about a variety of topics, including physical and mental health, nutrition and employment skills. “Our program has mentorship, education and employment components,” noted Abel, adding that Graces have the opportunity to work at Girl Crush, a bath and body products company Abel started in 2017, among other job options.

Louie emphasized that anyone with a heart for service would make a good Sage, noting, “We’re not looking for someone to be perfect. We’re looking for someone to be present.” Experts will be available to handle bigger issues if they arise during the

Indoor flea market posted

The Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) will host its last indoor flea market and garage sale of the season on Saturday, April 1. The flea market will be held in the Veteran’s Hall of the War Memorial Building, 54 W. Main St., Leola, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

More than 37 vendors will offer items such as crafts, toys, cleaning and paper products, books, Star Wars items, DVDs/LP records and collectibles, trains, small appliances, candy, tools, flower arrangements, and traditional flea market bargains. Refreshments will also be

mentorship program, and ongoing support will be offered to the Sages.

Abel said she’s excited to see Second Grace take off now that Louie’s been hired. “I keep asking the people who have signed up to wait, and I knew I needed to do something to

get this going,” she stated, noting that she began Second Grace in 2021. “Deb will start this engine up and get the train out of the station.”

Along with the Sage program, Second Grace has a wide range of additional volunteer opportunities,

available for purchase. There is no admission charge. Parking is available at the rear of the building. Proceeds will support the maintenance of the War Memorial Building. For more information, contact ULTWMA at 717656-6154 or ultwma@gmail.com.

including providing transportation for the Graces, performing clerical or office work, fundraising and social media/marketing. For more information on volunteering or the upcoming information sessions, visit https://secondgrace.org.

Looking ahead, organizers plan to expand the program. Working with representatives of the Braves Learning Center, located in The Together Community Center, Lifeways is working to plan a back-to-school event in August. “It will be more than backpacks and school supplies,” said Charlotte. “It will be a free clothing giveaway.” Charlotte noted that a number of pieces of new clothing items have been donated, along with brand-name shoes. In addition to clothing, personal hygiene items and free haircuts are scheduled to be part of the giveaway.

“What we need now is financial support,” said Charlotte, adding that gift cards that can be used at any store are helpful so she can shop anywhere for the program.

Volunteers who pack the food spend about an hour a week putting packs together and preparing for the next week’s work. Individuals who would like to volunteer may just come to Ridgeview Mennonite at the appointed time or call 717-768-3371 with any questions.
