Mentoring Makes A Difference BY ANN MEAD ASH
arla Beiler, director of Pequea Valley elementary advocacy with The Factory Ministries, Paradise, was disappointed when COVID-19 restrictions closed schools in March of 2020 just as she was about to launch the Brave Buddies mentoring program. However, Beiler viewed the changes with optimism. “(The shutdown) gave us time to revamp (the program). There are benefits to having to wait because we could make the program better,” she said. By spring of 2021, the Braves Learning Center, which is located in the Together Community Center, had opened, giving Beiler a convenient place to hold the program. The first eight-week session kicked off in the spring of 2021 with 11 Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) students and mentors. The 2022 session opened on Feb. 16 with eight students and

Chris Lubkemann’s tiny carvings are something to crow about - a majority of them are roosters or other fowl. But Lubkemann also creates letter openers, tiny brightly colored flowers, and a variety of animals, including a few unusual creatures reminiscent of Dr. Seuss characters. During the winter months, Lubkemann carves in a back room of his Lancaster home, but from April through October, he spends three days a week at the Amish Farm and House, 2395 Covered Bridge Drive, Lancaster. Lubkemann - who can carve flowers from a toothpick - is no lightweight in the craft, having authored close to 20 books on the subject, many published by Fox Chapel Publishing in Mount Joy. The child of missionaries, Lubkemann was born in Brazil. His earliest memory of carving was of making dental picks in the jungles of Peru at age 7, but he did not begin to whittle seriously until he was given a summer

assignment to help an older pastor in Glendale Springs, N.C., while still in college. “The mountain people ... carved little roosters and pheasants,” said Lubkemann. “The minister ... knew how to carve these things.” Lubkemann quickly got himself a country store pocketknife and started to learn. “I was tickled because I always enjoyed working with wood,” he said. “My first rooster ended up looking like it got into a fight and lost,” he recalled. “I kept working at it.” Back at college in South Carolina, Lubkemann thought he could help pay his tuition with his carving. “I decided to try to be selfemployed by ... carving roosters to sell to students or whoever,” he said. “I was probably the first college student in U.S. history who lit-
erally whittled away most of his senior year to pay for it.” After graduating in 1967 with a degree in biblical education, Lubkemann attended graduate school and then got married. He and his wife became missionaries in Portugal in 1972. “My wife is an incredible puppeteer,” said Lubkemann, who built puppet theaters for programs the couple would put on in parks, at marketplaces, and outside churches. The country also offered Lubkemann a unique opportunity to use his carving skills to connect with people. “One of the national symbols of Portugal is the rooster,” he said. “So I taught people how to carve these.” Lubkemann gave classes at the folk-art museum and was spotlighted on television, becoming known as the Rooster Man. In 1987, the couple relocated to Lancaster County, where eventually Lubkemann opened his shop at the Amish Farm and House. He has also done demonstrations at malls, at schools, and for civic clubs. For 25 years, he was a regular feature at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. In his own home, Lubkemann displays roosters he has collected, alongside games he has invented, including his Team Maze, which requires ultimate cooperation between two partners to complete. “I have been carving for 55 years,” said Lubkemann. He shows no signs of putting down his knife anytime soon. Even as a baby, Hunter Bristow loved trains. “We call him the train master,” said his grandma Donna Frias. In early March, Hunter got to experience the ride of a lifetime when Make-AWish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley arranged for the 10-year-old from Lititz to spend the day as a train engineer with Amtrak. Hunter was born with osteochondrodysplasia, a rare hereditary bone and cartilage condition. After a surgical mistake three years ago, he was paralyzed and now uses a
wheelchair to get around. Although he was eligible for his wish in 2019, he had to wait a few years due to the pandemic. When the big day finally arrived, Hunter was all smiles as he got ready to board the train at the Lancaster Amtrak station. “Ever since he’s been a little kid, we’ve been buying him toy trains and taking him on train rides,” noted Hunter’s father, Daniel Bristow. “He probably has thousands and thousands of trains at home. He’s always looking for new ones and different ones.” Hunter’s love of trains might come from his grandfa-
ther Herland Frias, who is a retired Amtrak worker. “From day one, Hunter got into trains,” Herland noted. “He’s taken train rides all over the place - to Chicago, to Boston.” Cara Feldman, vice president of development for

Quilt Talk Many years ago, when Dani Trussell and her family lived in Lititz, she would walk her son to the park. On the way, she met a woman who would sit on her porch and work on quilts. Trussell got to know the woman, and she taught Trussell, who already knew how to sew clothing, the art of quilting. In the last dozen years, Trussell has created between 35 and 50 quilts, most of which she has given away. Now, Trussell will share some of her knowledge of quilting at the Lancaster Christian Women’s Club event titled “Quilt Making Memories” at a luncheon to be held on Wednesday, April 6, at noon at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lancaster. In addition to Trussell’s presentation and

display of handmade quilts, Annie Friedrichs will share how “Perfect Love Overcomes Inadequacy.” When Trussell first met the woman who would teach her to quilt, the woman was making a Cathedral quilt. “A true (Cathedral quilt) is one of the most tedious to make,” said Trussell, who spent the next six months working on one, finally creating a 3-by-3-foot square. After Trussell’s son went to school, she took a job outside the home, and she hung up her needle for a while. “I promised myself I would do a full-size quilt when I retired,” recalled Trussell. Now, Trussell keeps a stash of brightly colored fabrics that feed her hobby, along with a number of carefully folded completed quilts. Among them is a wall hanging decorated with 16 breeds of dogs; Trussell plans to donate the wall hanging to an animal rescue so it can be auctioned. Trussell also has a quilt she made for herself in shades of blue against a white backdrop called Four Winds. Other patterns she has sewn include Mirror Mirror, Pinwheel, Cathedral Star, Hourglass Wreath, and Log Cabin. When Trussell cannot quilt a creation herself, she uses the services of long-arm quilter Delania Lefever in Manheim. Trussell noted that she is

unusual among quilters because she chooses a fabric first and then finds a pattern she thinks will work well with it. She also creates her own patterns, as she did when she found a fabric decorated with bees. “I couldn’t find a pattern I wanted to make with it, and I thought the pattern had to be sunflowers,” she said. The pattern she created is called Summer Flight. The black backing of the quilt is covered with white-stitched outlines of butterflies, bees, and dragonflies. Rescuing quilts is another of Trussell’s hobbies. “This is an 80-year-old baby quilt
signed HME 1940,” said Trussell, holding up the cream, pink, and blue quilt. “It’s one of the best examples of an applique quilt I have ever seen. Her stitches are totally invisible.” Trussell has plans for specific quilts she hopes to make in the future. “I want to do a Civil War quilt. I have been collecting Civil War reproduction fabrics,” she said, adding that she plans to use muted tones for the project. There is a cost to attend the luncheon, and reservations are required by Friday, April 1. Those who wish to attend should call 717-951-0773.

Make-A-Wish, explained that Hunter’s wish included the opportunity to punch tickets on the train and blow the train whistle as the train traveled from Lancaster to Philadelphia, where Hunter and his family, including his father; his mother, Shannon; and his 5-year-old brother, Brooks, took a train to Newark, Del. In Delaware, the family enjoyed a private tour of the Amtrak training center, including the opportunity to experience a ride simulator. Make-A-Wish grants lifechanging wishes for children with critical illnesses. Since 1986, Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susque-
hanna Valley has granted more than 7,500 wishes for local children. At his send-off, Hunter was greeted by many of his classmates from his fourthgrade class at Lititz Elementary School, who surprised their friend with posters and well wishes. “Hunter is a big part of our classroom,” said classmate Hadley Reed. “We’re really happy to be here for him.” Herland noted that seeing his grandson’s wish granted was very touching. “This is such a special day for us,” he said. “It’s very emotional. We hope this will lift up his spirits, because he’s been through a lot.”
