Lighthouse Vocational Plans Maker’s Market BY ANN MEAD ASH
In December 2019, Lighthouse Vocational Services (LVS) began offering a program called Strengthening Pathways. The program provides a variety of activities that are based on interests of LVS participants. Among the many activities is an art program that includes art lessons in painting and other crafts. Individuals taking part have produced watercolor greeting cards, painted canvases, decorated glassware, candles, and more. The creativity of the Lighthouse participants inspired LVS See Lighthouse pg 7

businesses and individuals who have gotten involved. “We have been blessed,” he said of he event, which benefits The Factory Ministries. “Every year we have done (the fundraiser), we have raised $10,000 to $15,000.” At that time, Stiger did not know that when all the pledges and donations were added up at the end of
the day, the 2021 effort would raise more than $15,000 for the organization. According to Kylie Stoltzfus, director of communications with The Factory, a ministry that endeavors to walk alongside those in need in the Pequea Valley area, Paul Senkowski, Simon Vogt, and Stiger were the top three fundraisers. Stiger, representing
Baron Insurance Group (BIG); Paul Senkowski of McClarigan CPAs; and Matt Herr of Scenic Ridge tied for the highest number of baskets, with 91 each out of a possible 100. Stiger, who opened the Gordonville office of BIG several years ago, said he was pleased to have 27 free throw shooters participate in this year’s event. Most participants

The borough of Lititz, located directly north of Lancaster city, is a town still heavily influenced by the Moravian colony that once stood in its center. The community was founded in 1753 on nearly 500 acres that John George Klein, one of the area’s first residents, donated to Count Nicholas Ludwig Von Zinzendorf, a Moravian preacher. The town has carefully worked the architecture of the Moravian Church, located at 8 Church Square, into newer buildings and successfully combined the past with quaint shops and attractive dining venues. The efforts helped earn Lititz the title of “America’s Coolest Small

Town” back in 2013. But “cool” is perhaps too ephemeral a term to describe Lititz. With traditional enterprises such as Wilbur Chocolate, which still operates a retail store on Broad Street; the Lititz Springs Inn and Spa, built in 1764 as the Zum Anker; and the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery, which is believed to be the oldest in the country, Lititz has much to offer visitors. Outdoor pursuits include a visit to Lititz Springs Park, a seven-acre plot featuring a band shell and recreation areas surrounding a picturesque stream. The park is also the location of the town welcome center, an 1884 Victorian Gothic building designed by Frank Furness, where volunteers provide information about activities and restaurants in Lititz. The Warwick-to-Ephrata Rail Trail offers 8 miles to walk, run, or bike from its start at Oak Street to Ephrata. Bicycle rental is available at the Warwick Township Building. At the Wolf Sanctuary of PA, located in the Speedwell Forge area of Lititz, visitors may enjoy a unique chance to see wolf pack dynamics. The restored Johannes Mueller House and the Lititz Historical Foundation Museum are generally open from the end of May through December, offering guided tours that tell the story of the Moravians and how the town was founded. The wooden portion of the Mueller house was built by Klein in 1740, making it the oldest standing private home in Lititz. It was also the location of the Lititz post office from 1830 to 1849. The historical foundation hands out free historic walking tour maps of Main Street, which take visitors to about 18 buildings. See Lititz pg 3

Factory Benefits from pg 1 home to a 52,000 square-foot rehearsal space built literally on rock … music. Located just north of town is Rock Lititz, a campus resulting from a partnership between Tait Towers and Clair Brothers Audio Enterprises. A quintessential example of a Lancaster County town, Lititz is surrounded by rolling hills and verdant farmland. While it is possible to enjoy a day visit to Lititz, the town offers a rich heritage and interesting activities that may compel visitors back to see and do more. Discovering Lititz can mean exploring and experiencing new sights, sounds, and tastes without traveling very far from your own backyard.
represented area businesses, but a few individuals who gathered pledges also took part. Metzler Builders of Lampeter sponsors a special half-court shot award. “When (a participant) finishes with free throws, (he or she) gets one half-court shot,” explained Stiger. A basket from half court triggers an additional $100 donation from Metzler. In addition, The Speckled Hen in Strasburg donated food and coffee for participants. Food for the event was also donated by Stoltzfus Meats. Basketballs for the
fundraiser are provided by Thad Rittenhouse, head basketball coach at Pequea Valley High School. “Our vision when we started was to make businesses familiar with The Factory and what they do here, but as it has grown, we have tried to stretch that,” said Stiger. “Some of the businesses we have connected with now do business with The Factory.” More information about The Factory, which is located at 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, may be found at https://thefactory ministries.com.

Lititz from pg 2 Located directly behind the foundation are the Mary Oehme Gardens. The gardens, which are free to visit and open to the public as long as no events are happening there, are a tranquil area full of bright colors against a green backdrop. Enjoying the scenery during a stroll through Lititz might cause one to work up an appetite. A few dozen restaurants, ranging from ethnic eateries to brew pubs and cafés, are sandwiched between shops. One local resident recommends Chilangos for authentic Mexican. Rooster Street Butcher features meats and pastas hosting a variety of tasty flavors, and Piccolo Eatery is known for the size of its Mediterranean- and Italian-inspired sandwiches. Tomato Pie Café is a familyowned restaurant offering an eclectic take on meals and desserts. While Lititz may seem steeped in tradition, it is also

Although the coat giveaway for area men, women, and children held at The Factory was not announced far in advance, cars were lined up two abreast in the Together Community Center parking lot a half-hour before the event started on Feb. 13. Some waiting in line were also there for the Fresh Express grocery giveaway, held monthly at The Factory, but a number had come to protect themselves or their children from the cold with a new coat. The coats, which were given
away until 2 p.m., were provided through a partnership between The Factory and the Blessings Store, a clothing bank ministry of Limeville United Methodist Church, 5783 Limeville Road, Gap. The store is a project of Limeville pastor Jim Brashear and Jeff Markle, who travels from the Allentown area to oversee the clothing bank that was started at the church in late 2020. “We have partnered with the school districts,” said Markle, who noted that the church has been in contact with both Pequea Valley and Octorara Area school districts. “We have sent out emails to parents telling them we have clothing for families in need,” he added. The clothing ministry has roots in Bethany Church, located in Allentown, where Brashear was pastor at the time the ministry started. “It was his vision 15 years ago to open a store in downtown Allentown for homeless and those in need,” said Markle. When Markle retired, he took over the Allentown store, partnering with the Burlington Coat Factory in the area to hold a coat

Markle said that he is at the Blessings Store at the Limeville Church on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon. “If people can’t make it at that time, we can make arrangements,” Markle said, adding, “We follow all the social distancing guidelines and (require) masks.” Only one family is served in the store at a time. “We are hoping we will be able to help families in need,” said Markle. In addition to clothing, the store offers a limited selection of free hygiene items for adults, teens, children, and infants. The Atlantic League announced recently that it will open its 23rd official championship season on Friday, May 28. League officials will work with team executives on additional details of the 2021 season, including COVID-19-related safety protocols. The league is finalizing the admission of new teams, conducting player signings, and working with its Major League Baseball partners on test initiatives for the 2021 campaign. Mindful of government safety concerns, especially ballpark attendance allowances, the league felt it was critical to announce its intention to play a full season this year. Additional details regarding the full 2021 season are forthcoming. For more information, readers may visit www.atlanticleague.com.

Zink reported that the troop remained active during 2020. Scouts met via Zoom and took part in onsite camping trips. Additionally, the Scouts kept up their Adopt-A-Highway cleanup commitment, and they took part in the annual Scouting for Food drive to benefit the Octorara Area Food Cupboard. “ We (may) still have restrictions because we don’t know what the summer looks like, but the boys have planned a full calendar,” said Zink. “We are planning to go back to Camp Rodney in Maryland. Last year we could not go because we were out of state.” For more information about the troop, email zink.scouts@gmail.com
