Speaker To Address Change In Churches 22nd “Messiah” Sing-Along Planned Parish Resource Center To Bring McLaren To Lancaster By Ann Mead Ash

“Churches are always looking at (the question), ‘How do we continue to be the faith community that is relevant and important to the people who come and give time on Sunday morning?’” said Kate Good, executive director of the Parish Resource Center (PRC), 2160 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The PRC works with 13 denominations to help answer questions like the one Good posed, and to that end, the organization will bring global activist and pastor Brian McLaren to Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, April 27, at 7 p.m. McLaren will speak on “The Changing Nature of the Christian Church.”

Brian McLaren According to Good, McLaren was chosen to speak based on what he can offer to churches. “We try to (present) leaders who are nationally recognized leaders (in the area of) faith,” said Good. “(McLaren) brings an approach to church that people are hungry for.” Good added that in McLaren’s arsenal See McLaren pg 3

The 22nd annual “Messiah” Sing-Along will take place on Friday, April 26, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lancaster at 7 p.m. Past events have featured about 150 singers and attracted up to 600 audience members. By Ann Mead Ash

Conference (MWC) officially accepted LMC as a full member. However, LMC still sees a need to focus on specific relationships with its international partners. According to LMC, there is a diminishing presence of EMM workers among many of these partners, less connection with fraternal bishops, and fewer administrator visits from EMM’s Central Administrative Office, meaning there is a need to find new ways to strengthen the LMC-to-national church relationships. LMC’s delegates will begin relating to those partner churches that are now autonomous. The delegate role involves maintaining regular communication with the partner, working with relevant EMM staff for joint trips, attending significant events of the partner, engaging with a new generation of the partner church’s leaders, coordinating visits to LMC regions from partners, and additional tasks. While delegates bring a wealth of relational value to these global relationships, they do not make decisions on

financial matters. Instead, their primary functions are to listen and engage with faith, discipleship, and church life issues pertaining to LMC and the partner. Serving as volunteers for renewable five-year terms, delegates are formally appointed by LMC, but the discernment process may include insight from EMM staff and leadership of the partner church. Tom Eshleman, the pastor of Groffdale Mennonite Church, serves as LMC’s global delegate, relating to international partners and overseeing the new international partner delegate system. International partner delegates are encouraged to raise their own funds for expenses. LMC also contacts the delegates’ church districts and other supporters to request funding. As funds are received, LMC manages the financial accounts for each delegate. On Feb. 15 and 16, the current delegates gathered with both LMC and Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM) staff at Mennonite Central Committee’s Welcoming Place in Akron for an initial orientation. EMM staff provided resourcing for the orientation, covering topics such as ministry philosophies, histories of respective partners, missiological and anthropological resources, and pragmatic education on international partnerships.

After speaking, McLaren will take time to connect with attendees. “There will be 15 to 20 minutes (for) questions and answers,” noted Good. “(The question-and-answer period will give attendees) a chance to ask specific questions that have been weighing on their minds and hearts,” she said. McLaren is known for helping congregations look at those questions in new ways. “He also talks about innovation and awareness of others’ traditions and understandings and (at) how they connect to Christian faith,” said Good. Good pointed out that McLaren’s talk should be helpful to all members of a church. “Faith leaders are an important part of this conversation, but all congregations are made up of people who are trying to figure out why church attendance is (lower) on Sunday morning or how to attract more young families,” she said. “Churches are looking at how (to) continue to

Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. No child care will be provided. Singers will begin arriving at 6:30 p.m. According to Leaman, about 150 singers from Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties and even out of state typically take part. Leaman organizes them by voice part. Audiences of as many as 600 have attended past events. The full “Messiah” by G.F. Handel is organized into three parts. The first part covers Christ’s birth and fulfillment of prophecy, and the second part focuses on suffering and death, while the third part concludes with triumph over sin and death. The Christmas program, which includes part one, is performed in Chester County in December. At Easter, the program begins with the overture and then includes all of parts two and three. Perhaps the most wellknown segment of “Messiah” is the “Hallelujah” chorus in part two, where the audience is encouraged to stand and sing with the vocalists. Leaman noted that sign language interpretation of the presentation will be provided by

Carol Stevens and Grace McConkie. “Originally, it was just Carol (interpreting),” recalled Leaman. “But then Grace became interested (in interpreting), and she studied with Carol.” Leaman added that sometimes the women interpret simultaneously and at other times they take turns. Stevens serves as deaf ministry area coordinator for the Peninsula-Delaware of the United Methodist Church. She has 50 years of experience interpreting American Sign Language (ASL). McConkie is presently working toward her ASL teaching certification while attending GoldeyBeacom College. Westminster will be represented at this year’s sing-along by soprano Carolyn McLain in addition to Floyd Rawleigh Jr., who will be the “Hallelujah” chorus guest conductor, and Westminister retired organist Pat Bleecker, who will play. Returning soloists will include contralto Heidi Kurtz, tenor Timothy Bench, and bass Mark Moliterno. McLain has performed locally

with Opera Lancaster and the Lemonade Concerts for Opera Lancaster. She has also taken part in the Dorothy Rose Smith Concert Series at Highland Presbyterian Church and the Crown Concert Series at Church of the Apostles. McLain has served as soprano soloist for “Messiah” at Calvary Church, for “The Holy City” with the Franconia-Lancaster Choral Singers, and for the Festival of Carols at Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. She also directs the Westminster

Strings. “This will be McLain’s first time singing with us,” noted Leaman. Leaman encourages vocalists who wish to take part to practice using the “Learn and Practice Your Voice Part” link at www.messiahsingalong.com. Music to use at the event may be rented or purchased by singers. The event is free and open to the public. A freewill offering will be received. Orphaned children and young adults from Kitale, Kenya, will travel to Lancaster to raise awareness for the worldwide orphan crisis during a cultural event called Pamoja: An Evening in Kenya. This event, sponsored by the Burkholder Family Foundation in conjunction with Horizon: Empower the Orphaned, will occur on Saturday, April 13, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. Pamoja, which means “together” in Swahili, is an event to showcase what is possible when people come together. During the event, 15 orphaned children and teenagers from Horizon’s Baba Nyumbani Micro Community in Kenya will share their stories of overcoming adversity. The public is invited to attend this free, family-friendly event. From 5:30 to 6:45 p.m., there will be an hors d’oeuvres reception, where guests may partake of catered Kenyan-inspired beverages and appetizers. During the reception, through song, dance and storytelling, attendees may meet the Horizon children; participate in child-friendly, interactive activities; receive a free T-shirt; and experience what life is like in Kenya through virtual reality stations. More than four years ago, Lancaster Mennonite (LM) School and Hershey Christian School entered into negotiations and a planning process for LM to acquire Hershey Christian. The enrollment at the Hershey campus of LM has been tenuous since the acquisition. After four years of operation, the LM board of directors, finance committee and administration unanimously agreed that sustainability of the Hershey campus of LM is no longer viable due to enrollment decline. LM has experienced enrollment decline for more than 10 years and is in the process of creating a sustainable financial model for the future. LM will be transitioning two campuses. Kraybill will operate independently as of Monday, July 1, and Hershey will close at the end of the 2018-19 school year. LM will also reduce staff at other campuses. This consolidation effort reduces the amount of square footage maintained compared to student enrollment numbers. The model for the future includes an endowment that creates a foundation for New Danville (ND), Locust Grove (LG), Lancaster Mennonite Middle School (LMMS), and Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMH). The current cash endowment is $9 million, with an additional $3 million in non-school properties. Endowment reserves remain strong and in place, preserving ND, LG, LMMS, and

An event focused on peacemaking will take place on Monday, April 15, at 7 p.m. at Akron Mennonite Church, 1311 Diamond St., Akron. A panel of storytellers will share how faith has shaped their responses in times of conflict or crisis. The panelists will be Gerry Keener, Nancy Heisey, Ed Martin, and Tala Bautista. Keener has sought to live out a life of reconciliation through his life commitment to Christian ministry. Good Samaritan Services (GSS) is a Chester County- and Lancaster County-based organization that provides emergency shelter and transitional and permanent housing for those experiencing homelessness. To honor the 10th anniversary of CEO Nate Hoffer’s leadership at Good Samaritan Services (GSS), GSS board and staff have launched a campaign to fund permanent housing rental assistance for the organization’s Bridge of Hope @ GSS program. Through the “It’s Good to Be Home! campaign, GSS is seeking businesses, churches, schools, community groups and individuals to make donations or set up fundraising teams to help avert eviction and homelessness for single women with children in Chester and Lancaster counties. When Hoffer was appointed as leader of GSS 10 years ago, the organization had three houses and served approximately 15

men in emergency shelter and transitional housing in a year. Now, GSS serves more than 185 men, women and children every year, working across the spectrum of needs, from emergency shelter and transitional housing to long-term affordable housing and permanent housing, with additional programs like matched savings, microfinance, mentoring and job training. To find out more about the campaign, to donate or to raise funds through the crowdsourced site Everyday Hero, readers may visit www.goodsam services.org/good-to-be-home.

Dayspring Christian Academy’s Women’s Giving Circle (WGC) will hold a membership meeting on Tuesday, April 23, at 8 a.m. Light refreshments will be provided. The WGC is designed to bring together women who are committed to the school and who desire to harness the power of collective giving by pooling donations and investing in projects meant to build and strengthen the school. The 2018 WGC supported music; books for Dayspring’s learning support program, P139; drone design for students in grades six through 12; reading projects for upper school students; and science, technology, engineering and math projects, including field studies. Any woman may join the giving circle at Dayspring by making an annual minimum contribution and a commitment to participate in the group ’s Lunch and Learn in February, where members see their funds in action; the social membership meeting in April; and the annual meeting in October. Each year, the combined contributions of the WGC membership are used to support specific projects and services of Dayspring. The membership votes annually in October on which projects will benefit from the fund. Dayspring invites women interested in learning more about the WGC to attend the upcoming membership meeting. PV Softball Posts Four Win Week, Now 6-0 by Ara Grigorian

Abigail Tobelmann drags a bunt for a base hit during Pequea Valley’s 18-6 win in last Monday’s Section Four game with visiting Columbia.

The Pequea Valley softball team was forced to play four games in four days thanks to inclement weather the previous week. Therefore, the first four days of April presented a challenge to this talented team, which only went out and won all four games, improving to 6-0 on the year. The Braves played host to Columbia on Monday in a Section Four game. They topped the Crimson Tide 18-6. This game, which was 7-1 in Pequea’s favor after three innings, lasted only five innings due to the mercy rule. The Braves responded to Columbia’s five-run fourth inning by rallying for 11 runs in the home half of that inning. Chloe Coburn started the game and earned the victory. Olivia Ammon came on in relief and pitched the final two frames. The Braves followed that victory with a win in their first non-league game of the year, beating Hamburg 6-2 on Tuesday with Sarah Moore

pitching a three-hit complete game. She was precise with her control, allowing only one walk, while getting help on defense when she needed it. Two more victories over Section Four foes improved the Braves’ Lancaster-Lebanon League record to 5-0. Playing on the road on Wednesday and Thursday, the Braves defeated Lancaster Catholic 13-4 and AnnvilleCleona 5-4, respectively. Despite three errors behind her, Ammon got out of trouble enough to finish what she started. She tossed a seven-hitter and struck out eight while only walking one. Moore earned a save in the victory at A-C, coming on in the fifth inning and holding the lead for Ammon. Annville chipped away at the Braves’ lead and made it a 3-2 ballgame after five innings. Thanks to two insurance runs in the sixth inning, the Braves were able to claim the win despite a two-run rally by the Dutchmen in their final at bat. BASEBALL The Braves lost a close Section Four

contest to Annville-Cleona Thursday, April 4, as the Dutchmen held on for a 5-3 victory. All three of Pequea’s runs came in the team’s final at-bat. “The boys stuck in there for the whole game,” head coach Dwayne Reiter said. “They didn’t give up in the final innings. “We got three hits in a row, a walk and also reached on an error - got us the three runs,” he added. “We had the bases loaded in the seventh inning. One more hit could have made the difference.” Annville pitcher Andrew Long held the Braves bats in check for the first six innings. The Dutchmen scored five early runs off PV starter Cam Yoder. “Cam Yoder struggled a little bit but settled down,” said Reiter. “He settled in and was very impressive starting in the third inning. “Gavin Eby came in and gave us two solid innings in relief,” continued the coach. “I’m really happy with what he has given us so far as a

Pequea Valley from pg 14 freshman.” On Wednesday, the Braves suffered a 9-3 loss to Lancaster Catholic in what Reiter referred to as a “sloppy game.” The Braves had six fielding errors in that Section Four game. “I believe they only had six or seven hits,” he noted. “We also gave them a lot of extra at-bats with errors and the six walks. Also, some of the runs they scored were on mental mistakes. “Should have been a different game,” he went on. “It was our first sloppy game of the year. Hopefully we won’t have any more.” The two losses dropped the Braves to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the league. That third league win came on Monday as Pequea pounded Columbia 172 with junior Jack Olonovich earning the victory. He only went three innings as the game was called due to the mercy rule. “Jack pitched for us and gave us three innings for a complete game,” explained the coach. “I’m expecting him to be one of our top pitchers this year.” The starting rotation right now consists of Olonovich, Yoder and Adrian Yothers. The offensive support for Olonovich came from several batsmen, including Dalton Temple, who had two hits and four runs batted in. Winston Thomas stroked two base hits and scored twice. Yothers went 2-for-2 with four RBIs. BOYS TENNIS The Braves not only remained unbeaten in the L-L League, they improved to 10-0 overall with

Thursday’s 7-0 win at home over Annville-Cleona. The team’s 4-0 league record has the Braves tied for first in Section Three with Lancaster Country Day. In the defeat of the Dutchmen, Josh Gingerich and Devon Clemmer were among the stars in both doubles and singles competition. Clemmer teamed up with Brady Burns at number one doubles, helping post an 8-0 victory over A-C teammates Casey Hess and Caden Horning. Gingerich joined another Josh at second doubles as he and Josh Heinrich won it 8-1. Joshua Jarvis (yes, another Josh) and Hunter Winey were stellar at number three doubles, earning an 8-2 win. Clemmer faced a tough challenge from Hess at first singles. After a 6-0 win, Clemmer clawed past the Annville-Cleona rival 7-6 (3) in the second set. Winey downed Horning 6-1, 6-2 and Gingrich came out on top 6-0, 6-1. At fourth singles it was Heinrich cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win. In a road match on Monday, the Braves blanked Northern Lebanon 7-0, winning all four singles matches in straight sets while nearly shutting out each of the Vikings doubles teams. Jarvis played alongside Alex Lehr at first doubles, winning 8-0. Gingerich and Nehemiah Glick were a winning combination also at 8-0. Burns and Clemmer came away with an 8-1 win. Pequea junior Seth Karg won the first singles 6-0, 6-0. Glick posted winning sets of 6-3, 6-0 at second singles while Jarvis (6-3, 6-2) and Gingerich (6-0, 6-1) took the third and fourth singles, respectively.

the James Street Improvement District (JSID) and the Lancaster Alliance, both dedicated to community and economic development for the city of Lancaster. With a focus of empowering neighborhoods and setting the stage for increased investment, LCA was charged with the development of Building On Strength, the city’s 15-year economic development strategic plan. Implementation of that plan remains LCA’s largest body of work. At the inception of LCA, Snively was named executive vice president and COO, positions he held until assuming the role of president in 2016.

Snively joined the James Street Improvement District (JSID) as vice president in May 2007, and in 2012, he assumed the role of interim president. His areas of focus included leading economic development initiatives, coordinating marketing programs, and implementing a business retention, expansion, and recruitment strategy for downtown and northwest Lancaster city. Snively moved to Lancaster from downtown Baltimore, where he lived and worked for more than 15 years. He was vice president of economic development and planning at

Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, a nonprofit business improvement district where he was involved for 10 years. Before his move to Lancaster, Snively also served as special projects director for Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse. types, fertilizer, and deadheading. She will provide a handout with important information, and she will also demonstrate planting techniques. “My strategy is ‘never see the soil’ (when filling a container),” Abel said. Container garden design is a second career for Abel, who had worked for a telephone company in Lancaster before she and her family moved to the Southern End about two decades ago. Unfamiliar with the area, Abel took some time to explore and stumbled across a number of greenhouses. She excitedly shared her finds with her friends, and when the group got together to fill containers with their purchases, Abel’s friends all agreed they liked hers the best. That started Abel on her current path. “I have training from Longwood Gardens. I go to classes anywhere I can find them, and I learn from other people,” Abel remarked. “It’s up to me to know which plants have the same qualities (in order to go in a pot together). I just love studying that stuff.” There is a cost to attend the garden tea party, and tickets must be purchased by Thursday, April 25, although organizers recommend not waiting to buy tickets. “We’re half filled already,” said
