More Than A Ride Shuttle Helps Students Learn Job Skills BY ANN MEAD ASH
A few years ago, Michelle Rondinelli, president of Kitchen Kettle Village in Intercourse; Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) superintendent Erik Orndorff; Adam Nagle, executive director of The Factory Ministries; and other community leaders began meeting to discuss area workforce problems - particularly, what might keep students from beginning their employment careers. “We were talking hurdles, what more could be done, what they were seeing, and the barrier of transportation was talked about,” recalled Nagle. Christ’s Home Schedules Local Speaker BY ANN MEAD ASH
“This story goes from tragedy to triumph,” said Vernon Wright, chief development officer with Christ’s Home, citing the theme of the organization’s upcoming fundraising dinner. The story Wright referred to is now the
subject of a feature film based in Lancaster County that is due to be released late this year. “Brave the Dark” is the story of Nate Deen, who began life as Nate Busko and was orphaned at a young age after a tragedy involving his parents. Nate will speak at the organization’s upcoming
spring dinner because part of his story unfolded at Christ’s Home in Paradise. Nate and his wife, Jessica, had been supporters of Christ’s Home for many years, even bringing presents for the children at Christmastime. Several years ago, when the couple attended a
fundraising dinner, they met Wright and John Bryant, chief executive officer, and Nate began to tell them of his history with the organization. “We met with him and his wife for breakfast and began to dig into his story,” recalled Wright. “ We were intrigued by it.” See Christ’s Home pg 3

more hours because they arrive sooner, and their parents only have to make one trip to pick them up,” said Rondinelli, who noted that the students work the register and learn to make change. They also work on displays, and during the holidays, they pull orders or pack items for shipping. Orndorff said that the program is part of a plan to help learners gain “authentic learning experiences,” adding that he was impressed with Kitchen Kettle, which hires young people beginning at age 14. “We wanted to work with these guys and have our kids learn under them,” he said. “(Students) are getting real work experience and character education … learning interpersonal skills that you can’t always learn in a classroom.”

“We were trying to figure out how to identify what the obstacles were,” said Rondinelli. “(We asked), ‘How do we address those with realistic solutions?’” For students, the transportation problem was predominant. Rondinelli explained that parents often brought students to their jobs at Kitchen Kettle after school, but were picking them up an hour later when Kitchen Kettle closed. “That didn’t work well for the parent or the student,” said Rondinelli. In March of 2020, COVID19 restrictions interrupted the discussion, but by the fall of 2021, the group had come up with the idea of running a shuttle from Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) to Kitchen Kettle at the end of school each day. “(Student workers) are able to clock

retention program. “We are in the hospitality industry where turnover can be higher,” she said. “We work hard to create an environment that supports people. Our vision is to spread happiness, not just for guests, but for team members and everyone we interact with.” PVHS student Kylee Worrell began taking the shuttle when her grandmother was unable to bring her to work due to a broken leg. “I think it’s pretty awesome,” said Worrell, who has worked at the cookie counter and filled bottles at the Olive Basin, among other jobs. Worrell has been careful with her earnings. “The first couple months, I made enough to buy a car,” she said, noting that she does not have her license yet. “Now, I am saving again.” Rondinelli reported that the partnership is working well. “The school does an amazing job of promoting the program,” she said, noting that students still go through the hiring process with Kitchen Kettle. She added that the students bring energy to the store. “They are really amazing workers. We are really fortunate,” Rondinelli said.

Christ’s Home from pg 1 “Brave the Dark.” “We have stayed in touch with Nate to get to know him better,” said Wright. Stan’s involvement in Lancaster County theater had brought him into contact with Glenn and Shirley Eshelman, founders of Sight & Sound Theatres. Stan introduced Nate to Glenn, who offered Nate a job running a spotlight. Nate, who is now video producer for Sight & Sound, has worked there for more than three decades. The Eshelmans will introduce Nate at the dinner and show a recent film that will give the audience a
behind-the-scenes look at the workings of the theater. Christ’s Home, with locations in Paradise and Warminster, is a ministry that has been providing care for children since 1903. In the late 1990s, the organization began to work with Bucks, Montgomery, and Lancaster counties to provide services to the children and youth agencies. The Teen/Mother /Baby program in Paradise supports girls who have made a parenting plan and helps teach them parenting skills. The Christ’s Home Spring Dinner will be held at Christ’s Home Community

The administrators learned how as a teenager Nate was homeless, living in his car and using school showers as a student at Garden Spot High School. One day, Stan Deen, a teacher at the school, offered him a chocolate bar after class. When Nate found himself in jail only weeks later, Stan visited him, offering him a place to live once he was released. After Stan died in 2016, Nate changed his last name to Deen to honor the man who raised him, and he began working on creating the Stan Deen Foundation. He also wrote the script for

A Chance To Get Refreshed And More for men include razors and shave gel. “We have socks, underwear, bras, undershirts, and we have some things for children too,” stated Morales, who added that a partnership with GROVE, a cleaning supply company, helps stock the kits and provides cleaning supplies for families. The unit also offers pregnancy tests and resources. But Refresh is more than just a place to freshen up. Lancaster EMS offers a community care medicine pro-
gram, which visits homes of those referred by Lancaster General Health or who qualify under insurance. “The goal is to help prevent unnecessary hospital stays,” said Morales, who noted limiting emergency room visits is another aim of the program. “I am fully capable and stocked to monitor vitals and in the near future, we will be doing diabetic screenings through (Lancaster General Health),” said Morales, who also has phlebotomy training, but noted she would need to be informed ahead of the need for a blood draw. “If someone is in a diabetic emergency, I have glucose to try to help reverse that,” she added. “We have ways to help
with medical aspects.” While the trailer can carry 40 gallons of water, Morales noted it is better to hook up to a water source at the location than to haul water, so weather is sometimes an issue. “If it’s below freezing, we will not deploy because our water lines will freeze,” she explained, adding that another issue is high winds that make it difficult to haul the trailer safely. “If we don’t bring the trailer, I will still go out in the truck or the ambulance or another vehicle to at least provide medical attention,” said Morales. Readers who would like to know more about the program may call 717-690-6538 or email alexandra_morales@lemsa.com.

Refresh Lancaster is a mobile shower and medical care service unit offered by a partnership involving Lancaster EMS, LancCo MyHome, and a local entity depending on the area of the county where the unit deploys. The current schedule puts the unit at a location from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. On Mondays, the unit is in Columbia at Columbia Presbyterian Church, 360 Locust St.
Columbia, and on Tuesdays, it sets up at ECHOS, 61 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown. In New Holland, the local partner is CrossNet Ministries, so the unit is at 110 W. Franklin St., each Wednesday, and on Fridays, the unit is at Union Community Care, 304 N. Water St., Lancaster. Moving Ahead “This is the first normal year (my wife, Sofie, and I have been pastoring New Life Church),” said Chris Smucker, who is now pastor of New Life, which meets at 10 a.m. on Sundays in the Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland. Chris became pastor of the church in January of 2020, but with COVID-19 restrictions interrupting regular life, the pastor is only now feeling a normalcy in the position. New Life is part of Dove International. Dave Dienner had served as pastor for many years prior to the transition to Chris and Sofie. Dave’s wife, Connie, noted that by spring of 2018, the Dienners were looking for a younger couple to take over the ministry. “(The church) was growing, and we felt God saying it was time to pass the baton,” said Connie. “Dave’s favorite verse is ‘One generation shall praise His works to another’ from Psalm 145:4,” she said. “(Dave’s) heart was to raise up the next generation.” Chris, who grew up in Churchtown, first met Dave and Connie more than 20 years ago when they were youth pastors at a church he attended. Chris met Sofie when she came to the U.S. from Belgium around 2000 and both of them attended a ministry training program being held in the Pequea Valley area. At the end of the two-year training session, Chris and Sofie were married, and they went to Cape Town,
South Africa, to be part of a ministry there. When they returned in 2008, they began attending New Life and soon became part of the church leadership team. When Connie, Dave, and the church elders formed a succession team, Chris and Sofie were part of the effort. “We asked if any of the elders felt the call (to be pastor),” said Connie, who noted that Chris and Sofie immediately said, “No,” before coming back to say that they should pray about the decision. “God began to work in their hearts,” said Connie, who noted that the church culture resembles a family. “We really wanted to find a pastor from within,” she said. In April 2019, Chris and Sofie began praying about the offer. “In June 2019, we really felt God was calling us,” said Chris, who noted he initially refused because he felt his life was too busy. “Then I thought, ‘It’s not about what I think but about what the Lord is calling us to do.’” “It was really a change of heart,” added Sofie. With the onset of COVID19 restrictions, the church did not meet regularly. “Now that we are through that, we feel this is a time to set up for growth and start establishing for the future,” said Chris. “Our vision is to become more extroverted toward the community,” said Sofie. “To create a culture of reaching out.” Chris agreed, saying, “Our goal is to connect people to Jesus and see them experi-
Collaboration To Measure Need The Alzheimer’s Association Greater Pennsylvania Chapter will collaborate with the YMCA of the Roses through the ALZ CARES (Community Alliances for Resources, Education and Support) Community Action Plan to assess and meet the growing need for dementia education and support. Through this partnership, the organizations will work together to provide care and support for those affected by Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia in York and
Lancaster counties through free education programs. The action plan also includes holding an Alzheimer’s community forum to better understand local needs regarding dementia support resources. All feedback generated from the forum will be used to develop community education programs, support groups, and other engagement techniques to increase awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Seventh Inning Rally Leaves PV With a Loss
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
The Pequea Valley softball team hung tough against Northern Lebanon in a Lancaster-Lebanon League game on Monday afternoon, April 11. The Vikings took advantage of walks and fielding errors as they scored seven times in the top of the seventh inning for a 15-7 victory at Pequea. “We had four errors in the seventh inning,” Doug High, the Braves’ head coach, pointed out. “We ended up with eight errors in the game. “It has been an issue for us,” continued the coach. “Our third baseman was out one or two games and our starting second baseman from last year is injured.” The Braves’ offense helped the home team pull ahead early, 2-0. After the Vikings took a 5-2 lead in the third, the Braves came back and tied it in the home half of the inning. They also shaved the Vikings’ three-run lead down to 8-7 before the final frame. Maddy Hassis went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs batted in. Victoria Smoker also drove in two runs for Pequea as did Olivia Clark. Emily Hammond slugged a double. Hassis pitched a complete
game, recording two strikeouts and only giving up four walks. “She pitched her first complete game,” High remarked. “She was pitching decent. She hung in there. “I have between her and Tori Smoker for pitching,” he added. “They’re young. No varsity pitching experience for the whole staff, so it was nice to see her pitch a complete game.” As for the errors that opened the gates for the Vikings and helped drop PV to 0-3 on the year, High added, “It is going to change. We are too good a team to be 0-3. We just need to figure some things out.” BASEBALL Baseball can be a strange game with outcomes that are difficult to rationalize. A game can be in the grasp of one team and yet the team that is trailing can have the “It isn’t over until it’s over” attitude. “ We were winning 8-4 going into the seventh inning and gave up five runs in the bottom of the seventh,” Carl Langley, the Pequea Valley head coach, lamented. “We gave up five walks and they had only two hits. It was a tough loss.” The Braves lost 9-8 to L-L

League rival Northern Lebanon on the road Monday, April 11. The five walks came during the Vikings’ winning rally. Gavin Eby was the Braves’ starter. He went six innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out five. “Gavin got us out of a jam in the sixth inning,” Langley said. “He hit his pitch count after that.” Pequea trailed 2-0 early on. After scoring two runs to tie the game in the fourth inning, the Braves added three in the fifth and added three more in the seventh to take the 8-4 lead. Offensively, Dylan Knott went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and three runs scored. He also knocked in two. “We did a good job playing small ball,” said Langley. “ We had timely hits and some walks.” Freshman Stephen Smucker also drove in two runs while Cristian Smucker went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. At the plate, Eby was 1for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. “Overall, the boys Photo by Joe Caufield played well,” Langley Madison Clark drops a bunt for a base hit in Pequea Valley’s 15-7, section- said. “Runs are at a crossover loss to Northern Lebanon, April 11 in Kinzers.
premium for us this year. The loss came down to three base running mistakes we had that could have led to more runs for us. “I told the boys that that’s a very good Section Three team that lost to Manheim Central 12-11,” added the coach. “They also lost close games to a couple of other good teams. So, despite losing the game, our boys should keep their heads up.” Pequea followed this game with another heart breaker, losing 4-2 to Elco in nine innings. Knott went six innings and struck out seven while allowing two runs. Peyton Temple had a big day (2-for-4) at the plate, hitting a double, stealing a base, and driving in a run. Cristian Smucker went 3-for-4 with a run batted in. BOYS TENNIS The Braves stayed unbeaten with a convincing 5-0 victory at Manheim Central on Monday, April 11 in non-league boys’ tennis action. Pequea Valley was coming off a 7-0 victory at Octorara on Friday, April 8, and improved to 10-0. The win at Octorara raised Pequea’s L-L League mark to 6-0 on the year. Pequea used seven different players to blank the Barons on Monday. Cole Stoltzfus and Samuel Arena handled their opponents in straight sets at number one doubles, 6-0, 6-0 while Dylan Rat-
javong paired with Joel Peifer for a 6-2, 6-2 win at number two doubles. Wade Stoltzfus came out on top 6-2, 6-0 at number one singles. Jazae Itegi dominated the number two singles 6-2, 6-1 and Hayden Winey made it a singles sweep (6-0, 6-0).
The same singles lineup, followed by Peifer at number four, helped make it a straight sets singles sweep for Pequea at Octorara. Wade Stoltzfus, who had paired with Itegi in an 8-2 first doubles victory, won his singles match 6-4, 60. Itegi posted 6-2, 6-3 winning sets followed by Winey’s 6-0, 6-0 shutout and Peifer’s 6-4, 6-4 wins. Winey and Cole Stoltzfus were 8-0 winners at second doubles followed by Arena and Ratjavong’s 8-0 win. The team suffered its first loss of the season on Wednesday, April 13 in a league match at Lancaster Country Day. The Cougars won 7-0 despite a couple of tenacious efforts by PV players. In the second doubles, Winey and Cole Stoltzfus came up just short in a 9-8 (12-10) final. Arena and Peifer were on the short end of an 8-6 final at third doubles. Also, at number four singles, Cole Stoltzfus won the first set 6-4. Diez Vilarino came back to win the next two sets 6-3 and 10-8 for the Cougars, who improved to 6-0 in league play.

Experience the Difference
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region (BBBSCR) seeks adults volunteers to mentor youths. As of April 8, more than 80 youths were on BBBSCR’s wait list across its service area, comprising Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon and Perry counties. The kids, ages 7 to 17, are enrolled in BBBSCR’s oneto-one community-based mentoring program. Adult mentors, known as Bigs, spend a few hours each month with their mentees, called Littles, for low-cost or no-cost activities. BBBSCR supports 500 to 700 youths and their families annually. Volunteers are asked to commit to mentor their Little for a minimum of a year, but many decide to continue meeting with their Little over the course of several years. Throughout the lifetime of the match relationship, BBBSCR staff members communicate with parents, volunteers and youths, providing guidance, resources, trainings, activities and general support. Additionally, the agency is raising funds to support its current matches and the increased demand for volunteer mentors. Community members and companies are invited to join BBBSCR for its Bowl for Kids’ Sake fundraiser, sponsored by Hershey’s Chocolate World. So far, the organization has raised over $80,000 of its $100,000 goal. As of April 8, BBBSCR needed 40 additional bowling teams via individuals or company sponsorships for its upcoming events. Bowl for Kids’ Sake events will take place on Saturday, April 23, at 2:30 p.m. at ABC East Lanes, 1001 Eisenhower Blvd., Harrisburg; Thursday, April 28, at 6 p.m. at Midway Bowl, 1561 Holly Pike, Carlisle; and Friday, April 29, at 6:30 p.m. at Palmyra Bowling, 1218 E. Main St., Palmyra. To register for an event, visit www.capbigs.org. To sign up to volunteer with BBBSCR, visit https: //capbigs.org/be-a-mentor/.
