A Timeless Message For Our Times Church Community Partners To Create Devotional BY ANN MEAD ASH

n the spring of 2020, after COVID-19 restrictions were in place, a group of pastors from Pequea Valley-area churches began meeting virtually, along with Adam Nagle, director of The Factory Ministries in Paradise. The idea was to share thoughts about what each was doing to help people deal with the uncertainties of the times. “I think (we wanted the) churches to be a voice of hope to the community in a time of chaos and insecurity,” said Greg Petersheim, executive pastor at Grace Point Church in Paradise and one of the authors of a new devotional that brought together writers from Bellevue Presbyterian Church, Gateway Church, Hershey Mennonite Church, Keystone Church, Maple Grove Mennonite Church, Ridgeview Mennonite Church, and Pequea Baptist Church, along with The Factory. “We wondered what we could do together with one voice to say there

are promises you can rely on that stand true,” he shared. In January of 2021, the group began writing the devotional “Trust Me,” which is based on the promises of God found throughout the Bible. The devotional is available in booklet format and as emails delivered on Mondays through Fridays beginning April 5 and running through Friday, May 21. The idea of community was integral to the project from the beginning. “This felt like a way of saying, ‘It’s not just one of us. It is all of us,’” said Audrey Kanagy, pastor of Ridgeview Mennonite. Making that concept real included the devotional’s writers processing as a group why they were undertaking the project and what it would look like when completed. Nagle had experience writing a journal program that pulled together God’s promises, which was used to help organize the 23 writers to share their wisdom on God’s loving and unchanging nature, faithfulness, for-

giveness, and more. Kylie Stoltzfus, director of communications with The Factory, formatted the writings for email and the booklet. The booklet was printed by Factory Prints. Because the devotionals are timeless, the group brought them to the attention of Universal Bible, a phone app that could offer the writings to a worldwide audience. According to Scott Feather, pastor of Gateway Church in Parkesburg, the group is currently in the process of having its work added to the app. Nagle noted that there is beauty in the church community coming together during a time when division has been prevalent. “That’s the heart behind this,” said Tim Rogers, pastor of Grace Point. “The churches wanted to offer an alternative vision of what a community that heals should look like.” He believes that the group and the devotional draw attention to ways to move forward together that transcend division and worry. “The ‘Trust Me’

Pastors from a number of Pequea Valley-area churches began meeting virtually more than a year ago, and the group has now produced a devotional, “Trust Me.”

they play as a distinct entity. “In the Irish folktale, I am the Great Bear of Orange,” he said, adding that the story is similar to that of “Beauty and the Beast.” “(Instead of objects), the people are transformed to animals, but when a princess loves the bear, he becomes a prince,” explained Kraenbring. Cast member Megan Esch said she enjoys the challenge of playing different characters. “Each skit has a different atmosphere,” she explained, adding that the first one will have a cartoonish feel. Student Sofia MascialeWalmer noted that among the songs would be those originating in West Africa, Ireland, and Spain, along with a selection of lullabies. Katie Sina, who serves as choreographer for the production, said that basic costumes with accent pieces will designate different characters. “Another way we are making it fun is by adding pop culture anachronisms (to the timeless tales),” noted cast member Josiah Esch. Masciale-Walmer shared that the biggest challenge is the uncertainty that has surrounded COVID-19 cases and resulting restrictions, but she noted that students are facing the situation with a flexible attitude. “If something happens, we will try to make a way around it,” she said. “But we are putting a ton of hard work in, and if it doesn’t happen, we have to (be prepared) deal with it.” While there is no cost to attend one of the shows, tickets are required. There will be opportunities to donate to the Lancaster Mennonite drama group. Tickets may be reserved by emailing box office@lancastemennonite.org, calling the box office at 717740-2456, or visiting www.lancastermennonite.org.

Congratulations to our nurses for their continued commitment to quality care and service excellence. While we are extremely proud to receive ANCC Magnet Recognition® for nursing excellence for the fifth consecutive time, the real winners are our patients. Our team of nurses is dedicated to providing the highest level of care every day for our patients. Magnet Recognition® is the most prestigious international distinction a health system can receive for nursing excellence and quality patient outcomes. Congratulations to our nursing team for bringing home gold, again. All six of Penn Medicine’s acute-care facilities — which also includes The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Hospital, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Chester County Hospital, and Princeton Medical Center — have achieved Magnet Recognition®.

nonriders are invited to donate bikes from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the park. More information about the organization may be found at www.thecommonwheel.com. This year, a Shred Event Fundraiser will be held in the park from 9 to 11 a.m. in conjunction with the ride. Bareuther said that this is an opportunity for community members to clean out their basements and file cabinets and make a donation to the club at the same time. Club president Bill Weik noted that shredding by Marco Technologies will happen on site and that 100% of the donation will go to the club. Beginning in 2019, the club offered a more inclusive sponsorship package for local businesses and individuals involving both the club’s Literacy Ride and the car show that members hold in the Neffsville Park each September. Through fundraisers, the club supports a number of local organizations. Weik noted that recent contributions have included scholarships for Manheim Township students, grants to United Disability Services, and funding for the Lancaster Early Education Center playground area. Those who would like to register to take part in the bicycle ride may do so by searching for “Rotary Ride for the Community 2021” at www.active.com. Questions may be directed to Bareuther at sbareuther@msn.com. Sunrise Rotary welcomes new members. This year’s Ride for the Community will be held at the Manheim Township Community Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Neffsville, on Saturday, May 8, with rolling starts beginning at 7 a.m. Riders must register and checkin between 7 and 9 a.m. The event will follow Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 guidelines, and it will be held rain or shine. Formerly called the Literacy Ride, the event was renamed to better reflect the many community organizations that benefit. The ride is designed to appeal to bicycle enthusiasts at a variety of riding levels, so the club offers four routes - a 10-mile family ride; a 21-mile ride through scenic countryside; a 43-mile ride showcasing farms, schoolhouses, and covered bridges; and a metric century ride of 100 kilometers, equivalent to approximately 62 miles. Metric century riders must depart by 8 a.m. On this course, an optional hill stage called the Cat’s Back challenge will be offered near Fairmount in Ephrata. Ride participants will find water and rest stops located along each of the marked routes. Cue sheets, SAG support, sports beverages, snacks, lunch, and comfort stations will also be provided to registered riders. Since 2018, the Rotary Club has partnered with The Common Wheel, an organization that works to encourage a culture of biking for transportation as well as recreation. The park became a drop-off location, with club members accepting quality, gently used bikes throughout the ride. This year, the partnership will continue, and riders and

Last fall, a few creative friends were talking. They had all taken part in fall vendor events, and they wondered about holding a spring show. “We’re going to have fun,” said Barb Dagen, one of the organizers of the first May Market. Dagen added that the timing of the event just prior to Mother’s Day will provide opportu-

nities to purchase reasonably priced gifts mothers will appreciate. May Market - 2021 will be held at the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) Building, 54 W. Main St., Leola, on Saturday, May 1, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The May Market will feature about a dozen vendors specializing in vintage, natural, and artistic items.

Among the many items that vendors will offer for purchase will be baked goods; plants, including succulents; wreaths and other natural arrangements; lavender products; herbal and skin care items; and candles. Items such as handbags, garden aprons, painted slates, and dryer balls will also be offered for sale. Food items that hungry shoppers may purchase will include breakfast

foods and coffee, along with hot dogs and hamburgers at lunch time. The event will raise funds for ULTWMA, a nonprofit, volunteer organization that organizes and hosts community events that honor the military service of all local residents. Readers who would like to learn more about the organization may search for “Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association” on Facebook.

Café is a family-owned restaurant offering an eclectic take on meals and desserts. While Lititz may seem steeped in tradition, it is also home to a 52,000 square-foot rehearsal space built literally on rock … music. Located just north of town is Rock Lititz, a campus resulting from a partnership between Tait Towers and Clair Brothers Audio Enterprises. A quintessential example of a Lancaster County town, Lititz is surrounded by rolling hills and verdant farmland. While it is possible to enjoy a day visit to Lititz, the town offers a rich heritage and interesting activities that may compel visitors back to see and do more. Discovering Lititz can mean exploring and experiencing new sights, sounds, and tastes without traveling very far from your own backyard.

Barely 30-something, husband, father, and New Holland borough council member Bryant Glick sat down a while ago to talk about what he loves about the town he serves. Glick, who moved to the area from Gordonville in 2000, talked about the activities he would include if a friend from out of the area came to spend a day with him in New Holland. “I would start with the Kauffman Building and a visit to Lickity Split,” said Glick, noting that he would begin his friend’s tour of downtown with a short discussion of the historical aspects of the building. From there, Glick would take his friend on a short walk across Main Street to the Tannery Antiques, where he would introduce his friend to owners Linda Dibartolo and Bill Heagy. “It’s more than a flea market,” shared Glick, explaining that the couple buys and sells a variety of items that they ship countrywide. Glick pointed out the history of the building on the corner of Main and Railroad, stating that it was once the home of Rubinson’s Department Store. “That building is part of the history of our community,” he said. Moving away from Main Street, Glick said the New Holland Community Memorial Park would be featured on his tour. “I would show (my friend) how big it is,” he said, adding that the playgrounds and the pitch and putt golf course would be highlights. “We would maybe play golf,” he noted. Back on Main Street and just around the corner from the park, Glick said he would take his friend to enjoy a cup at The Coffee Co., which was once Squireside and housed several businesses before that. As with the Kauffman and Rubinson’s buildings, Glick pointed out that the facilities are older, but have been revitalized and

Main Street, which take visitors to about 18 buildings. Located directly behind the foundation are the Mary Oehme Gardens. The gardens, which are free to visit and open to the public as long as no events are happening there, are a tranquil area full of bright colors against a green backdrop. Enjoying the scenery during a stroll through Lititz might cause one to work up an appetite. A few dozen restaurants, ranging from ethnic eateries to brew pubs and cafés, are sandwiched between shops. One local resident recommends Chilangos for authentic Mexican. Rooster Street Butcher features meats and pastas hosting a variety of tasty flavors, and Piccolo Eatery is known for the size of its Mediterranean- and Italianinspired sandwiches. Tomato Pie

to walk, run, or bike from its start at Oak Street to Ephrata. Bicycle rental is available at the Warwick Township Building. At the Wolf Sanctuary of PA, located in the Speedwell Forge area of Lititz, visitors may enjoy a unique chance to see wolf pack dynamics. The restored Johannes Mueller House and the Lititz Historical Foundation Museum are generally open from the end of May through December, offering guided tours that tell the story of the Moravians and how the town was founded. The wooden portion of the Mueller house was built by Klein in 1740, making it the oldest standing private home in Lititz. It was also the location of the Lititz post office from 1830 to 1849. The historical foundation hands out free historic walking tour maps of

But “cool” is perhaps too ephemeral a term to describe Lititz. With traditional enterprises such as Wilbur Chocolate, which still operates a retail store on Broad Street; the Lititz Springs Inn and Spa, built in 1764 as the Zum Anker; and the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery, which is believed to be the oldest in the country, Lititz has much to offer visitors. Outdoor pursuits include a visit to Lititz Springs Park, a seven-acre plot featuring a band shell and recreation areas surrounding a picturesque stream. The park is also the location of the town welcome center, an 1884 Victorian Gothic building designed by Frank Furness, where volunteers provide information about activities and restaurants in Lititz. Pequea Valley Softball Leads Section Four

BY ARA GRIGORIAN

R068520

Pequea Valley’s softball team won 6-0 at Northern Lebanon in a Section Three and Four crossover contest on Wednesday April 14. Olivia Ammon set a season high with her 15 strikeouts and went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run batted in. “ We got two in the first inning and three in the seventh,” Doug High, the PV head coach, pointed out. “Olivia got out of a bases loaded jam with one out in the sixth inning,” High explained. “We got out of that jam and it was huge. We

were only up 3-0 at the time.” In manufacturing runs, High utilized the suicide squeeze three times in this game. “I used it three times tonight,” he explained. “The base runner from third gets a good jump and the batter puts the ball in play. “Madison Clark had a double and two RBI’s,” added the coach, listing his team’s highlights. “Sarah Arment went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Olivia Ammon was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Hailey Yothers went 1-for2 with two RBI’s - a sacrifice fly and a suicide bunt. The closest Ammon had come

this year to her 15-strikeout total was the high of 12 earlier in the year against Oley Valley. She also struck out 11 Hamburg batters once this year. The Braves had a 15-0 win over Columbia on Monday. “I took out a couple of starters and put in other kids,” High explained, “trying to see who can step up. “The girls showed they can win when they are down one because one of our starters was sick. “We just have to keep hitting the ball hard and score a few runs.” Pequea earned an 18-0, six inning win over Lancaster Mennonite Friday, April 9. A nine hit offense, combined with six errors and 13 walks helped account for the scoring. Ammon struck out nine, walked two and gave up just one hit in Pequea’s third shutout of the season. BASEBALL The Pequea Valley baseball team won its third straight game, defeating league rival Columbia 5-3 on the road Monday afternoon. The Braves improved to 31 on the year (2-1 league). The Crimson Tide fell to 1-5 (0-3 league). Three days earlier in a Friday afternoon home game, the Braves outslugged the Lancaster Mennonite Blazers 12-7 in another Section Four contest. With runs scored in every inning but the seventh, Pequea broke a 4-4 tie with three runs in the third, gave up three in the top of the fourth but pulled away with three in the fifth and one more in the sixth. Monday, April 13, they dropped a 12-0 result at Mount

Calvary. TENNIS Pequea’s 4-1 non-league victory over Exeter on Tuesday was the team’s eighth straight win. The Braves improved to 81 (5-1 league) with the only loss coming to Lancaster Catholic in the opening of the season, leaving the Braves one game behind Catholic in the Section Three standings. In the non-league win over Exeter, Pequea won both doubles matches and two of three singles. Nehemiah Glick and Jazae Itegi won 6-4, 6-1 at first doubles

while Samuel Arena and Jeol Peifer got PV a second team point with a 7-5, 7-5 win. Brady Burns (6-4, 6-1) and Wade Stoltzfus (6-4, 6-0) came through at number one and three singles, respectively. Pequea’s previous match was a 7-0 defeat of Octorara at home on Monday. The first two doubles were 8-0 victories for the PV Braves - first for Burns and Jarvis and second for Jazae Itegi and Joel Peifer. Jarvis (6-3, 7-5), Stoltzfus (61, 6-0), Glick (6-2, 6-0) and Jazae Itegi claimed the fourth singles

6-2, 6-0. In their 6-1 triumph at Lancaster Mennonite the previous week, the Braves had Burns playing fourth single but Glick and Itegi led off for the Braves at doubles. Burns and Jarvis repeated Glick and Itzegi’s 8-1 win with an 8-1 victory of their own. Stoltzfus and Arena also won 8-1. The winners in straight sets for the first two singles matches were Glick and Stoltzfus. Burns won at number four singles in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) but Jarvis fell short 5-7, 6-3, 6-10.

New Holland from pg 9 reused to create new businesses. “Businesses come and go, but these are people choosing to invest in New Holland,” he said. Glick said he would finish the day with a pie at Palermos Pizza and Italian Restaurant, which is found going west on Main Street. “Palermo’s pizza is made with tender loving care,” said Glick. “It’s a familyowned business.” That New Holland boasts a number of small businesses where the owner is regularly present means something to Glick. “When you go into businesses (in New Holland), you can feel the warmth,” he said. “It’s not corporate America. (Rather,) it’s a small town where the owner works behind the counter and you get one-on-one face time with them.” Glick was 11 when he and his family moved to The Willows development, but New Holland is where Glick feels most at home. “I love this town. This is my hometown,” said Glick, who believes his feelings are shared by many other area residents. “I know a lot of people who care about the community,” he said.

Listing attributes of the borough comes easily to Glick. “We have a rich history and tradition in New Holland,” he said. “New Holland is a great place to live, work, and raise a family,” he said. “It was a great childhood (home) for me, and I want to continue to give that to my children.” New Holland has retained a feeling of yesteryear, according to Glick. “The uniqueness of New Holland is that it still has that small-town feel in the 21st century,” he said. “There’s a friendliness (because) we are a community of neighbors. We know each other, and people look out for each other.”

“Zammesei” Art Exhibit Posted Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) will present “Zammesei: Bringing the Lancaster Community Together Through the Arts,” an exhibition featuring recent works by the college’s Center for Creative Exploration students and members of the Garden Spot Village community, curated by Aidan Thackray, Class of 2022. The exhibition is available for public viewing at https://pcad.edu/exhibits_beyond/. All featured artworks were created by students and faculty of the

Center for Creative Exploration at PCA&D. In early 2021, residents of the Garden Spot Village community were invited to participate in a series of online workshops focusing on watercolor, collage, Notan design, poetry, and automatic drawing. Across a variety of media, this exhibit unites the residents of Garden Spot Village and the PCA&D community in creativity during a time of uncertainty and isolation. “Zammesei” is a celebration of art’s intrinsic ability to bring people together.
