Clear Water For Heroes Planned

Working Together To Feed PV By Ann Mead Ash

Once it was announced that Pennsylvania schools would be closed effective March 16 due to COVID-19 restrictions, it did not take long for Cathy

Koenig, director of student services for Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), to connect with Adam Nagle, director of The Factory Ministries. “I asked him, ‘How can we partner to get lunches out to families (in PVSD)?’” recalled Koenig.

“He said, ‘Let me talk to my team.’” According to Koenig, two hours later, a plan was in place, and PVSD contacted families electronically to let them know about the availability of lunches for all students in the district.

Koenig worked with Karla Neff, director of PV elementary advocacy at The Factory Ministries, to devise a plan that originally passed out lunches on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning March 19. The program soon switched to a single distribution on Wednesdays. Lunches, which can simply be picked up by all families with children in PVSD, are See Working Together pg 6

Volunteers working at the drivethrough lunch distribution at the Together Community Center include (from left) Andrea Esh, Hilda Zook, Michelle Fisher, and Hope Fisher. The effort is the work of a partnership between Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) and The Factory Ministries. Multiple lunches are available to any PVSD student on Wednesdays from noon until 2 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m.

Bucher Elementary third-grade student and Cub Scout Pack 93 member Case Baccio likes to fish, and so do his friends. “A lot of people I know love to fish,” said Case. After attending a Warrior Weekend to Remember in Milltown, Ohio, in July of 2019, Case had an idea. The gathering, which is sponsored by Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Gals (BS3G), the nonprofit arm of the Fastrax sky diving team, is held to honor veterans, Purple Heart Warriors, and families of fallen heroes. The event includes enriching experiences that facilitate friendships and encourage emotional healing. Inspired by the gathering, Case decided to combine his love of fishing with a See Fishing Tournament pg 2

or canceled, Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) has adopted a different format for its annual fundraising events for its New Danville and Locust Grove campuses. The two auctions are typically held on different days and have diverse features, but LMS has combined the auctions and moved the single event online, with plans to host the associated components later. “(We decided to) postpone the barbecue and kids’ activities until another time when we can gather together safely in person,” said LMS creative director Carrie King. The online auction will be hosted by BiddingOwl.com and run from 8 a.m. on Friday, April 24, to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 1. As of April 6, a total of 137 items had been uploaded to the auction program. Like so many other organizations, Black Rock Retreat, 1345 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, has had to adjust its operations. The Christian camp and retreat center has canceled all retreat groups that

had been scheduled for the next few weeks. The shutdown has resulted in a loss of income, and executive director Peter Fiorello noted that Black Rock depends upon retreat revenue, summer camper fees, and donations to pay staff members and to maintain operations. “As groups cancel, we have had to trim our staff, which stretches our ability to prepare for summer and the future,” Fiorello said. “We as a team continue to pray for wisdom and seek God’s help during these times. We are diligently planning for summer and how we can best serve our campers and families, if God gives us the opportunity to do so.” In addition to working on ideas, Black Rock has also been involved in practical activities. “In an effort to support our staff through this challenging time, especially for those See Retreat Center pg 4

The fundraising auctions for the New Danville and Locust Grove campuses of Lancaster Mennonite School will look very different this year. Instead of two large gatherings of students and supporters, a single online auction will be held from April 24 to May 1.

Eric McCullough, who is helping Case to organize the event, scoring of the competition will be based on each participant’s heaviest catches. “(Contestants) will be scored on their top five (fish),” explained McCullough, who noted that the Camp Mack lake is home to fish in a variety of sizes. serving in a time of conflict. “We are now friends with her,” said Baccio. McCullough explained that Wiener lost her son, Jeffery, who was serving in the Navy in 2014, but Bucher added that the pain of losing Jeffery was still fresh when the two women met. The experience of meeting Wiener and learning her story made such an impression on Case that he returned to Pennsylvania eager to talk to his Scout troop about ways to help out. “A lot of (members of) my den like to fish,” said Case. “We thought, ‘Why not hold a fishing tournament?’” Bucher explained that the family has been working with Matthew Adams, an executive at the Pennsylvania Dutch Council of Boy Scouts of America. “I asked if he could help, and he suggested we hold it at Camp Mack, and the Boy Scouts would help promote it,” said Bucher. She added that she is especially grateful to friends and family taking part in the effort. The fishing tournament will offer special categories and rates for those who have certain connections to the military. The Adult Hero category will include people age 16 and older who are Purple Heart recipients or are members of Gold Star or Blue Star families. Blue Star Families are the immediate family member(s) of a service member currently serving in a conflict. The Child Hero will include children of Purple Heart recipients or children who are members of Gold Star and Blue Star families. Open categories for adults and children will also be offered. corridor due to its unique mix of rural, village, and suburban landscapes and its role as a tourism destination. Survey respondents are asked to identify some of the top issues they see in this area, such as housing, road safety, and the future of farming, and compare strategies to address these issues. County and municipal partners will use this feedback to assist in creating a strategic plan for the corridor. To ensure broad participation in the survey, LCPC encourages public, private, and nonprofit partners in the community to promote it on their websites and social media. When the COVID-19 pandemic subsides, a paper version of the survey will also be distributed to municipal offices and other locations throughout the corridor.

The Lancaster County Planning Commission (LCPC), together with East Lampeter, Leacock, and Salisbury townships, encourages people who live, work, and play along the Old Philadelphia Pike (State Route 340) to take a new survey focused on the corridor’s future. The survey is available at https://places2040.com/online -surveys through Friday, July 31. This survey is part of an effort by LCPC and the three townships to implement the place-based approach to planning emphasized in “places2040,” the Lancaster County comprehensive plan. One aspect of that work highlights communities, corridors, and landscapes that extend beyond municipal boundaries. The plan identifies Old Philadelphia Pike as a priority

Pennsylvania Skill recently donated $250,000 to Feeding Pennsylvania, the state association of Feeding America Food Banks, to help the growing number of families struggling with food insecurity. The money from Pennsylvania Skill will be distributed among Feeding Pennsylvania’s nine member food banks that serve all 67 counties across the commonwealth, which are all seeing a rise in need as a result of the economic instability caused by COVID-19. Locally, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, which covers 27 counties, will receive a portion of the donation. The charitable food network continues to ramp up efforts to meet the increasing need, but this crisis response has also resulted in a significant financial burden for the food banks in procuring additional food, supplies and transportation. Food banks have urgently relied upon the generosity of donors to support these costs, which include supplies to ensure the health and safety of their employees, volunteers and the clients they serve. Furthermore, the food banks have continued to see a rise in the cost of food from manufacturers. The need for donors will continue as food banks anticipate the crisis response may last for months.

Lancaster County Career and Technology Center’s (LCCTC) Brownstown Campus received the Career and Technical Education Excellence Award from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Taking part in the award presentation were (from left) Dr. Lee Burket, director, Pennsylvania Department of Education, Career and Technical Education; Tom Wolfe, LCCTC Brownstown Campus principal; Sam Betancourt, LCCTC painting/ceramic tile and vinyl instructor; and Matt Stem, Pennsylvania deputy secretary for elementary and secondary education.

years in a row. The award was presented during the Feb. 13 CTE Celebration dinner that is part of the Pathways to Career Readiness Symposium held at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center. Schools receiving the honor met a particularly demanding challenge during standardized, end-of-program technical assessments. Seventy-five percent or more of all the students in these schools scored Advanced during their assessments. LCCTC’s standardized assessments are the National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI) tests, held in March. NOCTI tests are technical competency assessment products and services for secondary and post-secondary educational institutions around the world. Strong NOCTI scores on the individual level mean that a student has demonstrated mastery of a given skill set, an indicator of employment readiness. Strong NOCTI scores on the institution level show that a career and technology center is producing students with the skills and knowledge they need to be job-ready. Administrative director Dr.

program will be on Wednesdays from noon to 2 p.m. or 5 to 7 p.m. at the Together Community Center. Questions about this program should be directed to Koenig at 717-768-5577. During the first week, about 100 lunches were distributed to 30 area students. During the first two weeks, more than 230 lunches reached 99 families. “We have had families who have come to pick up lunch at The Factory Ministries, who have been able to access other resources and services that they needed,” noted Koenig, who relayed that some families have signed up to take part in The Factory Market Food Drive-Through or to meet with an advocate to discuss other needs. “That was a cool bonus,” Koenig said. Neff credited the many volunteers who are coming to The Factory with helping to make the program work. Koenig noted that PVSD and The Factory are working toward the common goal of providing support for PVSD families in need. “If there’s an increase in need, we’re working together to find out how we can (meet that need) in our district and in our community,” said Koenig. “We are in communication a couple times of week to talk about what is and isn’t working and what we need to change.” Koenig stressed that communication with families is especially important during this time. “We use email or an electronic backpack, and we drop mailings in for families,” said Koenig, who added that the PVSD website - www.pequea valley.org - has a COVID-19 link to help families receive information.

fruit or vegetables. A drivethrough system is utilized. PVSD families that have questions or need to pick up lunches at a different time may call Gavin Scalyer, director of food services, at 717-768-5513 or Neff at 717687-9594, ext. 206, or email Karla_neff@pequeavalley.org. Not long after lunch distribution began, representatives of Limeville United Methodist Church, 5783 Limeville Road, Gap, contacted Neff about providing breakfast to PVSD students. Beginning March 30, the church partnered with The Factory, PVSD, and members of the community to provide five days of breakfasts. Breakfasts usually include cereal such as granola, yogurt, milk, and sometimes fresh fruit. Neff noted that the breakfasts are a collaborative effort, with the school district providing cereal and The Factory bringing milk or other items to the table in conjunction with the church and the community. The breakfasts are packaged based on the number of children in a family and delivered to the family’s car. Breakfasts will be available for pickup on Mondays from 11 a.m. to noon at the church. Those wishing to receive breakfast foods should register by texting or calling Caitlyn Kirkner at 610-844-8742 and providing her with a name and the number of students in the household. In addition, the Supplemental Weekend Meal Program, which serves Paradise and Salisbury elementary learners and is housed at Ridgeview Mennonite Church, will continue through the end of the school year. artists, community experiences, toys, themed gift baskets, gift certificates to local restaurants and businesses, and more. Specific items of interest include a two-hour kayak rental at Shank’s Mare; admission tickets to the Lancaster Science Factory, Longwood Gardens, a showing of “Queen Esther” at Sight & Sound Theatres, and the adventure course at Refreshing Mountain Retreat and Adventure Center; a Bob Neff Tours gift card; a creek stomp and campfire party at BoxWood Farm in Washington Boro; and a private pool party at Black Rock Retreat. Additionally, a comforter made by students at the New Danville, Locust Grove, and Lancaster campuses will be up for bids, with the understanding that the bed covering will be donated to Mennonite Central Committee. Individuals will also have the opportunity to sponsor education at LMS through the Fund-aNeed section of the auction. Education may be purchased in units of hours, days, and weeks. The actual cost of tuition per student is $12,435 per year. Under typical circumstances, donations and auction purchases help to make quality, Christcentered education affordable for more students and support the dedicated teachers and staff members at all LMS campuses. Now, financial support is even more important. “We are aware many families are experiencing financial hardship, so know that even a small donation amount goes a long way to support students and teachers,” King remarked. “Your support now helps provide families a sense of community, Christ-centered love, and support in this time of social isolation.” LMS students have continued to attend school remotely during the shutdown. Teachers regularly connect with students through a variety of technologies. The Locust Grove campus is located at 2257 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, and serves students in prekindergarten through eighth grade. It offers Spanish Immersion for elementary school students. The New Danville campus, 393 Long Lane, Lancaster, offers education for students in prekindergarten through fifth grade and features an award-winning garden and outdoor classroom. Readers may view details about the auction by visiting www.lancastermennonite.org/ auction. Anyone with questions may email events@lancaster mennonite.org.

Lancaster Heart Ball Held hospital, they learned that doctors had discovered she had four congenital heart defects. Shiloh battled a staph infection before being able to undergo lifesaving open heart surgery to correct her heart defects. She continues to be monitored closely and will return for a stent placement procedure due to a re-narrowing of her aorta, but the Morans said they are hopeful and are enjoying seeing Shiloh grow into a healthy baby. Children born with critical congenital heart defects like Shiloh’s have a much greater

chance to enjoy a long and healthy life than they could only a few decades ago thanks to the advanced detection and surgical interventions available today, according to the American Heart Association. The American Heart Association has funded more than $3.8 billion in heart disease and stroke research, including research that led to the development of stents. Other highlights of the evening included a performance by American Music Theatre to welcome guests and set the “Heart of the Forest” theme, the

The annual Susquehanna Litho Club Student Night took place on Feb. 27 at the Lancaster County Career and Technology (LCCTC) Brownstown campus. The Litho Club’s Student Night is one of the organization’s marquee events, this year drawing more than 150 students and business representatives from counties in the southcentral Pennsylvania region and into Maryland. Attendees included students from Columbia County. With the flare of a flash strobe and the whirr of a camera shutter, Isabel Vreeland’s head-and-shoulders photograph was taken and sent to a waiting LCCTC visual communications student. For the next several minutes, Adrianna Wright, an LCCTC visual arts student from Garden Spot, processed, filtered, recomposed, and otherwise tweaked into a colorful, Pop Art comic version of Vreeland’s portrait. Vreeland’s portrait and several other visual communications activity centers were featured during the event. LCCTC visual communications programs presented various activities, including screen printing and laser etching, Photoshop work, html website coding and website creation, photo portraiture, and more. This year’s event included a tour of the Standard Group, a print management and marketing logistics company in Lititz; dinner; and a panel discussion
