Community care
BY ANN MEAD ASH
“Aswe look at what The Factory (Ministries) does, we realize it takes a community,” said Adam Nagle, director of The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. “We are looking at the reality that complex problems in our lives are solved best through community.”
This sentiment will be celebrated on Thursday, May 18, when The Factory holds its third annual homecoming event from 5 to 8 p.m. This year’s activities will tell the stories of those The Factory has helped to solve problems; the activities will include tours, a program in the gymnatorium, a silent auction, and refreshments. The theme of this year’s event is “Celebrate Community.”
The event will focus on the journeys of Factory participants who have seen changes in their lives. “We will profile the story of a participant who faced barriers and was helped through multiple touchpoints in the community,” said Nagle, who noted
that those resources included Grace Point Church of Paradise, Pequea Valley School District, and Community Action Program (CAP), in addition to The Factory. “Multiple agencies and organizations came together to see those solutions lead to a flourishing of life,” commented Nagle, who noted that the stories would be featured in video presentations and story boards. A half-hour presentation, at which Nagle will speak, will take place in the gymnatorium, where charcuterie boards from Stoltzfus Meats and cupcakes and assorted popcorn treats will be served and a surprise will be in store for attendees.
The self-guided tour of the facility will feature several stops, including hospitality; adult advocacy; The Factory Market; the Building Braves area, where early learning and elementary programs are held; the youth center; and Factory Prints, a small printshop overseen by Megan Rogers that offers print services for business cards, postcards, rack cards, booklets, and invitations.
New this year, a silent auction
will be part of the fundraiser. Featured items will include tickets to a concert in Hershey, a high-end photography session, and a decorative wreath. Additionally, Nagle is personally cutting a wooden jigsaw puzzle to go up for bids. “We will have 25 or more items,” he noted, adding that the organization hopes to have sports memorabilia and tickets to auction off and that winners will be announced that night. Nagle noted that he hopes to provide a positive word to attendees as he highlights the local community. “We really want people to leave that night encouraged and strengthened in their own souls,” he shared, adding that he hopes his listeners will feel glad to have attended and been a part of the celebration. “I want them to leave inspired and refreshed,” he said. Those wishing to attend the free event are asked to register at www.thefactoryministries.com or by calling 717-687-9594. There will be opportunities to donate to The Factory Ministries throughout the evening.
Finding her calling in music
BY ANN MEAD ASH
About three years ago, Debbie Fisher of Gordonville was vacationing with friends. “We were sitting around talking about (the answer to the questions) ‘Are you doing what God called you to do? What’s deep inside you?’” recalled Debbie. “I was like, ‘Well, I am in roles I like. I am a mom, wife, business owner, but I am not really (in my calling).’”
Debbie is a mother of two daughters and the wife of Dave Fisher, with whom she owns a cabinet coating

and ecommerce business, but her calling was in the field of musical performance. “When I was a kid, I always wanted to be a professional musician,” said Debbie, who was involved in choirs, worship teams, and traveling musical groups as a child and young adult. After graduating from Lancaster Mennonite School in 1997, Debbie married Dave, and they traveled west, where they started businesses. “I shelved (music),” said Debbie. “‘Never too late’ is kind of my motto (now),” said Debbie, who is in her 40s.

“Like a traditional tea, tiered plates will hold the tea sandwiches and desserts. It’s all fancy and girly,” said Jennie Straub, executive director, when describing the 13th annual Ladies’ Tea and Auction that is being hosted by Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone. The event will take place on Saturday, May 6, at Linville Hill Elementary School, 295 S. Kinzer Road, Paradise, Registration will open at 9:30 a.m., and activities will begin at 10 a.m.
All proceeds will benefit the center, which educates and supports women facing unplanned pregnancies. “We will give an update on what we do as a ministry and the new things that are happening at the ministry,” said Straub. “Then, we will go into a traditional ladies’ high tea.”
Menu items, which will be prepared by Hillary Prickett from The Salted Apron, will include homemade scones with lemon curd and jellies, quiche, finger sandwiches and desserts.

“What’s holding you back (from pursuing music)?” Debbie’s friends asked her, and she did not know the answer. She prayed, “Lord, here I am. I can sing and play guitar, but I have never written a song.” Debbie also took action, making contacts in the music industry through friends in Tennessee and joining songwriting groups on social media. Within five months, during the fall of 2021, she wrote a song and submitted it in hopes of taking part in a virtual training offered by two Grammy-winning songwriters in Nashville. Debbie’s song, “This Is Part of My Story” was selected from nearly 30 other entries, and she took part in the seminar.
In July 2022, Debbie went to Nashville to record three of her songs, which began getting airplay on Southern gospel stations in the South in October of that year. “I
said, ‘Yes,’ and God swung the doors wide open,” said Debbie, who discovered the You, God’s Music Showcase competition on Facebook around that same time. “I submitted a video of me singing (‘This is Part of My Story’),’” said Debbie, who was notified within a day that she had been selected for the competition. Debbie explained that the contest has four rounds, three of which are held online. The fourth round, which is live with judges, will be held in San Antonio, Texas, in July.
For each vote in the first online round, which began April 22 and will run through Sunday, May 7, a nominal donation is required. Debbie chose for her donations to go to the Outpouring Church in Manheim. Those who would like to watch the video of Debbie and vote for her may visit https://yougodsmusic .org/music-video/this-is-part -of-my-story-by-debbie-fisher.

A story that resonates love and grief
BY ANN MEAD ASH
After Nancy Bieber’s father, Ammon Meyer, died, Bieber inherited a shoebox full of letters. The shoebox was stored in her attic, and it remained there until about 2015. “I had to discover what I had,” said Bieber. “At some point you have to sort through things.”
At first, she would only open a letter occasionally, but soon Bieber realized that the letters were keys to the life of her biological grandmother, Fianna, who had died of tuberculosis in 1915, leaving Bieber’s grandfather, Samuel, and two young children, Ammon and Leah. “I thought, ‘Oh, my goodness. What have I here?’” said Bieber, who noted that among the letters were some written by Fianna to Samuel before they married or from Fianna to Samuel while her grandmother lived at White Haven in Luzerne County. She also found postcards from her father sent to his mother when he was just 3 that read, “Dear Mama, I miss you.” For Bieber, who had not heard much about her grandmother while growing up, the letters were a treasure. “My grandmother died when my father was not yet 4 years old,” said Bieber. “His memories of her were small.”
Bieber soon realized that her grandmother’s story might resonate with others.
“It’s such a human story,” she said. “People identify with it.
Christian Women’s Club will meet
The Lancaster Christian Women’s Club will hold a “The Elephant in the Room” luncheon meeting on Wednesday, May 3, at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lititz. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m.
Guest speaker Linda McDaniel will present “Living in the Day Spa - Is That Realistic?” In addition, Rose Ann Sietins from the Elephant Sanctuary of Tennessee will be featured.
Advance reservations, including dietary restrictions, are required by Friday, April 28. For details and registration, call 717-799-0088.
It’s full of love and … grief.” In response to that realization, Bieber has written “Fianna’s Story: A True Story of Love, Grief and Faith,” a book of nearly 200 pages that traces Fianna’s life from her birth to her engagement and marriage, the births of her children, and her struggle with tuberculosis. The book was published in 2020. Bieber will give a multimedia presentation based on the book in the chapel at Garden Spot Village (GSV) on Wednesday, May 3, at 7 p.m. The presentation is free, and the public is welcome to attend.
Fianna’s world encompassed a small slice of Penn-
sylvania, including Lebanon County where she was born; Quarryville, where her father began a church; and northern Pennsylvania where she was treated for tuberculosis.
Bieber wisely included direct quotes from the letters in her book so that Fianna and her family could tell their own story. “They wrote such beautiful letters,” said Bieber. “I quoted widely because I knew it would be much more effective in the words of the person who was there actually experiencing it.”
In addition to the letters, Bieber discovered artifacts that told her grandmother’s story, including report cards,
a college bill, a piece of her grandmother’s wedding dress, and her bill from Elizabethtown College. “There was a lot that I could build on, but I did a fair amount of research,” said Bieber, whose background as a psychologist, spiritual director, and previous author all helped in the effort. Bieber researched tuberculosis, White Haven, the train system that existed in the area in the early 1900s, and the structure of the German Baptist Brethren Church to which the family belonged.
More information about Bieber and her books may be found at https://nancy bieber.com.

The Pequea Valley Braves chipped away at the four-run deficit in the fourth inning of
Monday’s Lancaster-Lebanon League softball game at Annville-Cleona. They cut the Dutchmen’s lead to 6-5.
But four late runs helped
the visiting Dutchmen come away with a 10-6 victory.
A pair of underclassmen contributed to the offense for Pequea (4-4, 3-2 league). Freshman Izzy Graham, who has been hitting the ball well, went 2-for-4 and drove in a run. Sophomore Sydney Roye had two hits and three runs batted in.
Juniors Chevelle Fisher and Carissa Mulder each had two hits. Mulder drove in a run and scored one herself.
Abby Evans went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Dutchmen.
The previous Friday, the Braves won a slugfest at Lancaster Catholic. Mackenzie Musser, the starting pitcher, went three innings, giving up just one run. The Crusaders put up four runs in the fourth inning.
The Braves bats got a boost from Madi Hassis, who went 1-for-2 with a double, driving in two runs. Madison Clark
got the job done out of the third spot in the batting order, going 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI. She also swiped two bases. Roye also had a perfect day, going 2-for2 with a run batted in.
BOYS’
TENNIS
With their only loss of the season coming at the hands of the top-ranked team in District Three Class 2A, the Braves continued their winning ways with victories over Ephrata, McCaskey and Annville-Cleona in boys’ tennis action. The Braves improved to 12-1 on the year, maintaining the fifth spot in the district power rankings.
And that top-ranked team is L-L League foe Lancaster Country Day - an unbeaten 14-0.
Pequea won 5-2 at Ephrata Middle School on Thursday, April 13.
Wade Stoltzfus and Cole Stoltzfus outplayed Todd Weist and Lance Wilson by an 8-3 margin at number one doubles. Hayden Winey and Joel Peifer won a much closer match at second doubles, 8-6.
That was the final score of the third doubles with Jackson Hershey and Bailey Scott of the Braves finishing on the short end.
In singles play, Winey outlasted Caleb Zimmerman of Ephrata 6-2, 7-6 (3) at number two singles. The close battle was between relatively easy straight set victories at number two singles - Cole Stoltzfus (6-1, 6-0) and number four singles winner Scott (6-1, 6-1).
A greatly improved McCaskey team was next on the Braves’ schedule as they went into Lancaster on Fri-
day, April 14. The Braves stopped the Red Tornado 4-2.
The Stoltzfus pair of Wade and Cole blanked their opponents 8-0 at number two doubles. The first doubles match had Hershey and Baily proving to be formidable foes for Maxwell Smith and Logan McIntyre. The Tornado twosome, however, prevailed 8-5.
In singles play, Wade Stoltzfus (6-1, 6-0), Cole Stoltzfus (6-4, 6-0) and Winey (6-1, 7-6) earned the points necessary for the Braves to earn the victory.
The Braves finished strong with a 7-0 win at AnnvilleCleona on Monday, April 17. The Dutchmen’s Jared Hostetter proved to be a tough opponent despite Pequea’s 7-0 victory. At number one doubles, the Cole and Wade Stoltzfus tandem edged Hostetter and Sam Domencic 8-5. Hostetter and Domencic were the only A-C players to win a set in singles play.
At number two doubles, Winey and Cole McEvoy cruised to an 8-1 win. Peifer and Scott were 8-5 winners at third doubles.
Domencic gave Wade Stoltzfus a good fight with Stoltzfus coming out on top 6-2, 3-6 10-8. Hostetter lost the opening set 6-1, but defeated Cole Stoltzfus 7-6 before dropping the tiebreaker 10-5.
Peifer (6-4, 6-4) and Winey (6-4, 6-2) won their respective singles matches.
BASEBALL
Myles Furlong went 6 2/3 innings of strong pitching while also going 2-for-5 at the plate plus two stolen bases and two runs scored on the
base paths as the Braves topped Columbia 10-3 on Wednesday, April 19. Furlong’s pitching performance also featured 10 strikeouts.
The victory improved the Braves’ record to 8-4 on the year.
Junior Jayden Stoltzfus went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Helping himself get into scoring position for the two runs he would eventually score on the day, Stoltzfus stole three bases.
Logan Zynn’s 3-for-3 game with a run scored and Stephen Smucker’s 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run helped the bottom of the Braves’ lineup as well.
At the top of the order, Nick Ammon had a sacrifice fly RBI. He also singled and scored a run.
The Braves, who had been shut out 3-0 by Lancaster Catholic the previous Friday, topped Annville Cleona on the road by a 5-1 score on Monday, April 17. Smucker struck out 10 in six innings as the starter.
Zynn, who crossed the plate two times, Stoltzfus, Evan Smith, Dominick Burrell scored the Pequea runs.
While Stoltzfus went 2-for4 with two runs batted in, and RBI single by Peyton Temple, a Furlong sacrifice fly plus an RBI double by Zynn proved to be the timely hitting the team needed. In addition, Smucker went 2-for-3 with an RBI, helping himself.

Tea and auction
A highlight of the evening each year is the table decorations. “Individual hostesses volunteer to decorate a table, and they invite their friends to sit at their table,” explained Straub, noting that prizes are awarded to the top three tables. “The tables are beautiful; these people are so creative.”
Last year, one of the tables featured a baby theme, and each napkin was folded into the shape of a diaper. Another table included a plant in a teacup for each of the guests. Some table hostesses bring their own teapots and cups and bake individualized cookies.
In addition to the food, the fundraiser will include a live auction. Among the items on the auction block will be tickets to Sight & Sound, a weekend getaway at a beach property, dinner vouchers and tickets to Longwood Gardens.
“We get donations from the community like floral arrangements, wreaths and gift certificates (to local businesses),” said Straub. “We go to a local auction and buy potted flowers and hanging plants, and we auction those
off as well.”
