SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
VOL LVII • NO 19
Discerning The Truth ot so many months ago, Tim Rogers, pastor of Grace Point Church in Paradise, was struggling with a frustration. “I felt like there was a cumulative effect of what I was seeing politically and relative to COVID-19,” he said. “I was feeling that Christians are supposed to be people of truth, (but) if Christians can’t discern truth in what they’re reading and what they’re sharing on social media and the theories they engage or propagate, how can anyone take them seriously when (they are) trying to present Jesus as a truth?” Rogers’ frustration grew into a proposal for a Sunday school series and then into a preview session for a limited audience. Now, Rogers, with help from Scott Feather, pastor of Gateway Church, Parkesburg, will present “True or False - Truth, Deception, Conspiracies, and Why It All Matters” for Christians and non-Christians at the Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, on Saturday, May 8, from 8:30 a.m.
N
to 2:30 p.m. There will be a nominal fee to attend, and lunch will be included. Rogers has put a great deal of time and effort into researching his subject. As part of his research, he looked into Christian nationalism and its impact on the conservative evangelical block. “The seminar is built to try to increase our understanding of the framework for Christian nationalism and shifting perception of evangelicals and to give us a framework about how to think well about what is true and false,” he explained. “We have to identify what is going on in our culture a bit better and (consider) why we want to think certain things are true.” Feather attended the three-hour preview session, and he quickly found himself identifying with Rogers’ frustration, but he also recognized a difference in his own reaction to the subject. “I am feeling the exact same thing, and I had thrown my hands up in the air and got angry,” said Feather, noting that he appreciates Rogers’ calm
War Memorial To Host First May Market BY ANN MEAD ASH
Last fall, a few creative friends were talking. They had all taken part in fall vendor events, and they wondered about holding a spring show. “We’re going to have fun,” said Barb Dagen, one of the organizers of the first May Market. Dagen added that the timing of the event just prior to Mother’s Day will provide opportunities to purchase reasonably priced gifts mothers will appreciate. See May Market pg 7

14th Annual EPC Golf Outing Will Benefit Good Samaritan Services BY COURTNEY MENGEL
In 2002, Good Samaritan Services (GSS) purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to serve five people at a time. Nineteen
years later, GSS has acquired 13 different properties and can serve 200 people every day. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 after opening an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for
women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, emergency shelter, traditional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing. See EPC Golf Outing pg 3
On hand at the 2020 EPC Golf Outing during a donation from $3,000 presenting sponsor Alwine Security to GSS were (from left) EPC representatives Lauren Hillegas, Jeremy Engle, and Jocelyn Engle; Alwine Security owner Jamie Alwine; Nate Hoffer, CEO of GSS; and Derek Sanders and Matt Rhoads of Alwine.

The Education Department of Lancaster EMS announced its “Learn While You Earn” program. The program will be the first full-time academy for eligible candidates to earn a Pennsylvania Bureau of EMS-approved EMT - Basic Certification. This program is a collaborative effort between Lancaster EMS and PA CareerLink. Eligible candidates will be hired as a full-time Lancaster EMS employee and compensated at a training hourly wage while in attendance at the Pennsylvania Bureau of EMS’ EMT- Basic Certification course, which requires a minimum of 40 hours per week. Upon successful completion of the program and after obtaining a Pennsylvania Bureau of EMS certification, the employee will be promoted to EMT-B with the commensurate pay rate increase and associated benefits. Candidates will also agree to an 18-month employment commitment to Lancaster EMS after certification. EMT candidates will be recruited from the general population with emphasis on high school graduating seniors. Classes will begin in September at the Lancaster EMS Millersville Station, 100 E. Charlotte St., Millersville. The first academy class is expected to be completed by mid-December, with candidates working effective Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022. The application and employment process will consist of a phone interview, program entrance assessments as well as a personal interview by a formal panel of current Lancaster EMS employees. Following completion of all pre-acceptance processes, the individual will either be offered a position or placed on a potential candidate waitlist. Those with potential interest in this full-time education to work program should contact 717-481-4841, ext. 234, or emtacademy@lemsa.com or visit www.lemsa.com /emscertification.asp.

“Our organization is unique in that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coordinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of times, people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can’t receive assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homelessness. We can fill in the cracks.” Since July 2020, GSS has served nearly 400 men, women, and children through its emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support programs; provided nearly $90,000 in rental assistance, including 18 eviction preventions; and helped 53 individuals and families successfully complete their programs and find stable housing. “I get to meet individuals in our shelter and hear their stories,” said Caprell. “They’re all such wonderful, beautiful people. There’s such a stigma that comes with homelessness, but it’s so far from the truth. Anyone can become homeless at the drop of a dime.” Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing. The 14th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 11, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville, with tee times at 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Meals, beverages, and snacks will be provided, and participants will have chances to win prizes throughout the golf course. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to GSS. “With COVID, people have been hit really hard this past year, so there are many people in need of the services that GSS offers,” noted EPC marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “You could be helping a family member or your neighbor.” Caprell said one of the biggest reasons to attend the event is that events such as the EPC Golf Outing

to foster respectful discussion. “We can disagree with each other without disregarding each other,” noted Rogers. “That is a value for this seminar.” Rogers has set specific goals for attendees. “I would hope that people would be interested in coming to grow in their knowledge to learn civil discourse and walk away with some tools that will help them live in both truth and grace with each other,” he said. “Help (them) discern what is true

The softball team blanked Manheim Central 8-0 on Monday as Olivia Ammon pitched a one-hit shutout. Ammon was dominant, striking out 12 batters. Her teammates took advantage of six errors by the Barons. The Braves plated two runs in the top of the first inning and doubled their lead with two more in the fourth. BASEBALL The Pequea Valley baseball team faced one of the strongest teams in the Lancaster-Lebanon League on Monday when they hosted Manheim Central. The Barons were coming off a 14-0 defeat of Warwick the previous Friday - a win that had raised their record to 8-0 on the year. “They were just a really good team,” Carl Langley, the Braves head coach said. His squad was unable to get anything going offensively as the Barons came away with a 16-0 victory. “We were also short on numbers,” he added. “It’s always tough playing a school like that, but it can also be a learning experience for us.” The Braves shook off the loss and played at Donegal on Wednesday. The hitting was on point for Pequea as the visitors took a 3-0 lead for starter Jaden Estevez. “We executed on situational hitting,” Langley said. “We’ve been shut out three times, but seeing the hitting in key situations is encouraging.” Justin Vollmer drove in one of Pequea’s runs on a sacrifice fly. Conor Brown lined a single to center field for another run batted in. “It was probably the hardest hit ball all day,” Langley said. “It was very cold and windy, so a tough day to play a game. The wind knocked down a lot of the balls that were hit hard.” Donegal put together a three-run rally in the fifth inning. A pair of walks and timely hits of their own resulted in

the Braves losing the lead. “Jake has pitched really well for us,” Langley said. “I had to take him out because he had reached his pitch limit. “I was really happy with the way the boys played,” continued the coach. “I really thought we were going to pull this one out. We had a couple of starters who weren’t in the lineup.” TENNIS Pequea Valley’s tennis team improved to 6-1 in the LancasterLebanon League with a 4-3 victory at Lancaster Country Day on Tuesday, April 20. Nehemiah Glick came through in the clutch for the Braves as he won the number four singles 6-2, 6-2 to help the Braves eke out a win. The Cougars had come back with straight set victories in the first two singles matches. Wade Stoltzfus stopped the bleeding with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at number three singles. In doubles competition, Brady Burns and Josh Jarvis prevailed in an intense match, claiming a 9-8 (4) victory. It was a key win as the Cougars claimed the number two doubles before Glick and Samuel Arena paired up for an 8-5 victory at the third doubles. Wednesday’s close match at Donegal did not go in favor of the
Braves, who came up short 4-3. It was only the second loss of the season for Pequea Valley (9-2) who earned only one team point in the singles matches - Burns winning number four singles 6-0, 6-0. Burns and Jarvis were a winning combination at number two doubles, 8-2 while Glick was paired up with Jazae Itegi at third doubles - an 8-2 Pequea win. Jarvis came up just short at number three singles as Donegal’s Akilan Murugesan pulled out a 7-6 (3) first set victory before winning the next set 6-2. photo by Bob Diller

In a second tent, also open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friendship Heart Gallery will offer some artwork for sale, including items from the Primitives by Cathy collection. Among these will be water bottles and blocks that sit on shelves and bear the work of a Friendship artist and sometimes inspirational messages. “(Primitives by Cathy) takes Friendship artwork and puts it on home décor pieces,” said Link, who noted that coasters and notebooks will be among the pieces for sale. “It’s not just a gift; it’s a gift with purpose and meaning,” said Link, who noted that a portion of the sale will go back to the gallery. She said both the plants and the artwork make great Mother’s Day gifts. Link said that she hopes some individuals who are served by Friendship Community will be at the Fest. “Doran has been at previous Fests,” she said. Doran, who is legally blind, is known for the woven potholders he sells by donation. “It’s a craft he loves to do, and he donates proceeds back to Friendship,” said Link, who added that the potholders can be used as hotpads and coasters, and that each is colorful and distinctive. “It’s art and function (together),” she noted. Another individual who may attend is Josh Doughty, who fulfilled his lifelong dream of writing a book along with his home-based services team member, Dave, who meets with him regularly. “They’re buddies,” said Link, who explained that Dave encouraged Josh in the writing process. Josh will bring copies of “Josh’s Journey … With Family, Friends & God” to the Fest. A drive-through chicken barbecue will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of this year’s Fest. Both individual half-chickens and chicken meals will be sold. Meals will include a half-chicken, applesauce, chips, a roll with butter, and a beverage. Chicken may be purchased by car or as a walk-up. There will be no seating area. Link said organizers are looking forward to the opportunity to engage with the community in a new way. “It will be a fun day at Friendship Community. We are excited to see the smiles behind the masks,” she said.
