Historical Society Will Hold Program, Book Signing By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

The Historical Society of Salisbury Township will hold a book signing and historical presentation on Saturday, May 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. at historic White Chimneys Estate. Attendees will have a chance to meet the authors of the historical society’s newest publication, “Civil War Veterans Who Lived in or Were Buried in Salisbury Township, Lancaster County, PA.” Alfred Brown, Alfred Gerhardt Jr. and Joan Lorenz have assembled the book to honor the Civil War soldiers of the area. The project began in September 2011 and was completed in October 2018. The 569-page book contains 439 full biographies as well as photos, newspaper clippings and other documents. “I did a small project for Westtown Township in Chester County. Joan saw

it and decided she wanted to do it for Salisbury,” said Brown, explaining how the project got started. “I’m an English teacher, so I’m used to doing things like this. With these two guys working so hard and so well, it was a pleasure,” Lorenz said, praising Brown and Gerhardt, both of whom are veterans. “I’m very proud. Here these two veterans now are able to spotlight veterans of earlier times.” Information was gathered from hundreds of newspaper clippings, obituaries, letters and other documents. Sources are fully cited in footnotes. The bulk of the biographies cover Union veterans, but there were a few area residents who served the Confederacy. One chapter covers the complex history of Martin Buzzard, who began as a Union Army member, but switched sides after he was captured. Captured again by the North, he returned to Union Army. LAPS from pg 1 house will include demonstrations and a chance to win equine-related gift baskets. There will be a dental demonstration by Katelyn Duncan of Duncan Equine Dental Services and a presentation by Dean Stoltzfus, Stoltzfus Feed & Supply’s equine nutrition expert. Representatives from Lasata Farm, a nonprofit organization that provides therapeutic riding and horsemanship lessons to those with disabilities, will also provide a demonstration. “They adopted three of our (miniature horses) that they use for children,” Geiger noted. Natural horsemanship trainer Sam Smucker will provide a behavioral horse training session. A fee will be charged, and preregistration is required. Sessions will include Under Saddle, Trailering and Young Horse Issues. To register, readers may call 610-864-6374 or email Lapspa@hotmail.com. Beverages and snacks, including soft pretzels and homemade baked goods, will be available throughout the day for a suggested donation. Those who would like to reserve a spot in the tack sale may contact LAPS at Lapspa@hotmail.com or 215-803-7704. LAPS, a nonprofit organization, enforces cruelty laws in Pennsylvania to protect large animals from abuse, neglect or cruelty through education, abuse investigation and adoptions. Geiger, LAPS board members and humane agents are all volunteers. During the open house, visitors will be able to meet animals that have been rescued and are available for adoption, including a Thoroughbred horse, a pony and a miniature horse. “This is where the animals are brought and prepared for

adoption,” Geiger explained. “If (the new owners) move or can’t afford to keep it, the animal comes back. It’s a lifetime commitment.” LAPS rescues farm animals, including horses, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, donkeys, mules and burros. “LAPS was incorporated in 1988. The local SPCA at the time could not rescue large animals and there was no one to call if someone saw a horse being abused and that’s how we got started,” Geiger said. “What makes us unique is that we have no paid staff and we do not pay our humane agents.” According to www.large animalprotectionsociety.org, the humane agency has state authority to investigate cruelty complaints and prosecute offenders in order to enforce Pennsylvania’s animal cruelty laws in Chester, Delaware, and Lancaster counties. When a complaint is issued and verified, LAPS humane officers will investigate. “We (first) try to educate the animal owner and give them time to remedy the situation, unless it is a severe case,” Geiger explained. If necessary, LAPS will remove the animal and prosecute the owner. “We rehabilitate (the animals) and find homes for them,” she said. “We use New Bolton Center and local vets and we have caretakers that live at the farm.” She said that the organization recently rescued New Zealand Arapawa goats, which is an endangered species of goats. Some of the animals have already been adopted. “Cooking is like an art. Some people will learn it from school, but I have that talent. Even when I was a refugee, I was a cook in the American embassy in Djibouti. I have that passion for cooking, said Demeke Getahun, president of Siloam Ethiopia, a nonprofit organization that has opened a free medical clinic in Harar, the Ethiopian hometown of his wife, Wegayhu Ketema. Getahun learned to cook from his mother. After his father died when he was very young, Getahun spent much of his time helping his mother, and he learned both by observation and through practice. Those cooking skills have been called upon for Siloam Ethiopia fundraisers, where the public can sit down to a buffet meal of Ethiopian favorites. On Saturday, May 11, however, Getahun will step into the role of teacher, as he and Ketema lead an Ethiopian cooking class. The class will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at Ethiopian Evangelical Church of Landisville, 175 Church St., Landisville. Attendees will learn how to make siga tibs, atakilt wat, and yellow split peas. Getahun described siga tibs as a beef dish cooked with onion, a special kind of pepper, garlic, jalapenos, special butter, and

tomato. “It’s a very tasty food. You can make it as spicy as you want, Getahun said, acknowledging that folks have varying tolerances of spicy food. “When we do the class, we’ll explain how to cook it without spice. Atakilt wat is a mixture of cabbage, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, onion, garlic, ginger, and olive oil. Cooks who want it spicy may add jalapeno peppers at the end. The yellow split peas are mild but flavorful. “Everybody loves that one, Getahun commented. Attendees will cook each dish, and then they will sit down to eat together. The food will be served with injera, a sourdough-type flatbread made with teff, a gluten-free grain. Ketema, Siloam Ethiopia’s vice president, will help to lead the cooking class. Getahun praised the versatility of his wife’s cooking by saying, “We can make Italian and Indian food. Wegayhu went to school in India for eight years. She cooks the best rice. Cooking class attendees will receive a gift basket containing a Siloam Ethiopia apron, recipes for each of the three dishes, Ethiopian coffee, and spices important in Ethiopian cooking. “They can cook Ethiopian food when

Both tents will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities for children, which will include a bounce house and face painting by Rebekah Violante of Joyful Canvas, will begin at 10 a.m. A petting zoo and the magic of Papa Tater will both be on-site. A food court will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature chicken barbecue meals including a half-chicken, a roll, chips, applesauce, and a beverage. Other food items will include chicken corn soup, hot dogs, french fries, and ice cream. As part of the fest, Friendship began offering a fund-a-need program a few years ago. This year, the fund-a-need roster includes concrete walkway repairs, washing machines, flooring, electrical work, shed repair, office chairs, laptop computers, and refrigerators. One need that Spagnolo called attention to was funds to provide summer camping experiences at area camps for Friendship clients. Individuals may donate to the fund at the Friendship website. Donations of items for the auction are still being accepted, and volunteers are always needed. Volunteers may sign up through a link on the website. Through its many group homes and intermediate care facilities, as well as home-based services and programs, Friendship provides services to more than 230 area individuals. Organizers hope this year’s fest will raise $75,000 for the cause. Readers with questions may call 717-656-2466.

Friendship Community, a ministry that helps individuals with developmental disabilities to impact the world with their capabilities, will hold its 2019 Fest, Auction, and 5K, rain or shine, on Saturday, May 11, beginning at 7 a.m. at Friendship Community, 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. The day will open with a cafeteria-style pancake and sausage breakfast and a plant sale. Two years ago, the organization added a 5K run/walk to the annual event. Registration for this year’s 5K is now open at www.friendshipcommunity.net, or individuals may pick up brochures at the Friendship office. Registration will be discounted through Friday, May 10, and registration will open at 7 a.m. on the day of the run, with the run beginning at 8 a.m. Registrants will receive a goodie bag and a T-shirt while supplies are available. Horning noted that those who sign up for the 5K will have the opportunity to set up their own web page and to request sponsorships from friends and family members if they wish. Runners will be entitled to a free breakfast at the fest. The general auction will begin at 9 a.m. Spagnolo noted that a variety of items are being collected for the auction. She said that purses, household items, quilts, gift certificates, gift baskets, and tickets to local attractions and sports competitions are among the many items organizers plan to have available for bidders. The Friendship Heart Gallery will have a tent filled with artwork available for purchase. The

The Braves took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh where their Section Four rivals took advantage of fielding errors to steal a 4-3 win. “We scored twice in the seventh inning as the bottom of the lineup came through for us,” head coach Dwayne Reiter explained. “Logan Beegle came through with a base hit. Collin Bailey got on and Dale Stoltzfus doubled to score one. “Dalton Temple put down a nice suicide squeeze,” he added. The Indians rallied for two in the home half of the seventh. A single and a misplayed sacrifice bunt put two men on base. “They stole third and we threw the ball into the outfield,” Reiter recalled. “They scored the gamewinner on a sacrifice fly. “That was a tough loss,” added the Pequea coach. The loss dropped Pequea Valley to 5-7 in the L-L League (6-7 overall). Junior Jack Olonovich started for the Braves and went 5.1 winnings. They were sixth in the District Three Class-AAA power rankings. “That was a tough loss,” Reiter said of the Donegal game. “They are sitting at number four in quad-A. It would have been a nice win for districts. We’re sitting right on the edge. “From here on out, every game is important,” he added. “We have four league games and one nonleague game coming up.” The Braves are riding the hot bats of Yoder, Temple, Olonovich and Adryan Yothers, who slugged a two-run homer in a recent 11-8 defeat of Octorara. “Dalton Temple has been hot at the plate,” said Reiter. “Jack Olonovich is swinging a good bat right now. The Social Security Administration (SSA) and its Office of the Inspector General (OIG) launched a joint public service nnouncement (PSA) campaign addressing a nationwide telephone impersonation scheme. SSA and the OIG continue to receive reports from across the country about fraudulent phone calls from people falsely claiming to be Social Security employees. Calls can even “spoof” Social Security’s national customer service number as the incoming number on the caller ID. The new PSAs will air on TV and radio stations across the country to alert the public to remain vigilant against potential fraud.
