Picture Perfect - Factory Event To Focus On Empowerment hira Zimmerman, director of advocates for The Factory Ministries, sees it as part of the organization’s mission to make all who enter feel welcome. “(Our) emphasis is that every participant who walks in the building feels at home here - for everyone to experience that feeling of safety, stability, and feel that homey vibe,” said Zimmerman. Visitors are invited to enjoy that comfortable atmosphere at the second annual Factory Homecoming on Thursday, May 19, at the Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, from 5 to 9 p.m. This year’s theme is “Experience Empowerment.” Those wishing to attend the free event are asked to register at https://thefactoryministries.com or by calling 717-687-9594. There will be opportunities to donate to The Factory Ministries throughout the evening. Each guest will receive an experience booklet in the reception
S
area. Zimmerman explained that visitors will take part in a selfguided tour with eight stops, including hospitality; adult advocacy; The Factory Market; the Building Braves area, where early learning and elementary programs are held; and the youth center. “There will be four experiences where story boards (will tell) our neighbors’, friends’, and participants’ stories of empowerment,” said Zimmerman, who noted that staff members will be at designated spots to answer questions and highlight story boards. Another tour stop will be the community collaboration spot, where community leaders will discuss the focus on working together. Each tour will end in the youth center, where appetizers provided by Stoltzfus Meats will be served. Executive director Adam Nagle will speak in the newly remodeled gymnatorium at 6, 7, and 8 p.m., followed by videos spotlighting stories of Factory participants. Each program in the gymnatorium will last up to 30 minutes.

Previously known as Good Sam Shelter, GSS has been operating See Golf Outing pg 12

“We enjoy inviting everyone over,” said Zimmerman, who added, “It’s fun to see how the entire community comes together for this event.” Zimmerman emphasized that the open house is a celebration of what participants have accomplished in their lives. “The big highlight is the stories of our participants, but we also get to showcase businesses that sponsor and come together, and that’s a perfect picture of how the work is done here.”

toys, crafts, garden items, furniture, quilts, and more. Smucker noted that several sheds and DeWalt tools will be sold. Food for purchase at the auction will include chicken barbecue meals and pulled pork sandwiches, along with a variety of other foods. Over the decades, Ronald McDonald House, located within walking distance of Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, has served countless families. Once the facility was expanded in 2010, the auction committee agreed to shift support to operations of the house, explained Amy Leonard, development director with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central
Pennsylvania. Leonard noted that the house is slowly reopening following the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions and that 28 bedrooms are open, along with community areas and dining facilities. Over the years, the fundraiser has brought in more than $1 million for the cause, and Smucker is looking forward to making this year’s event a success. “We are hoping people didn’t forget about (the auction),” he said. “I am hoping people will come out.” Donations will be accepted until Monday, May 23. Readers who would like to donate may email aleonard@rmhc -centralpa.org or call 717533-4001, ext. 156.

Ronald McDonald House provides services free of charge to families of children being treated at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital. In 2008, the house required a $4 million expansion, which would add 15 rooms for a total of 35. The Plain community of Lancaster County had utilized the house often, and Smucker responded to Leader’s letter by holding a meeting at his house in March of 2008. The first Lancaster County Community Auction to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Pennsylvania was held on May 2, 2009. After a two-year hiatus, the 12th Lancaster County Community Auction will be held at the White Horse Fire Company, 111 White Horse Road, Gap, on Tuesday, May 24, beginning at 11 a.m. The traditional country “bring something, buy something” format will feature quilts, antiques,

The Eagles handed the Braves a tough loss at home as they pulled ahead in the top of the sixth inning en route to a 5-4 win. “The game where we gave up 17 runs, we also scored 11,” head coach Doug High noted, referring to the 17-11 loss to Donegal. “We just didPhoto by Joe Caulfield Pequea Valley’s Ezekiel Hershey lays off the high pitch in the n’t get the big hit.” In the Cocalico game, the Braves’ 10-0, Section Four loss to Lancaster Catholic last Monday Braves got a complete game in Kinzers. “The first two innings we gave up a lot of walks and Cocalico had a couple of timely hits,” Langley noted. The Eagles were led by Alex Welker, who went 3for-3 with a triple and a run batted in. Fellow senior Caleb Sturtevant went 2-for4 with three RBI’s while Tyler Angstadt stroked two doubles and drove in four runs. Having given up 10 runs in the first two innings, the Braves battled back with a four-run fourth inning, ultimately coming up short in a 14-4 defeat. “After the third inning we scored four runs and they only scored three,” Langley pointed out.

effort from Maddy Hassis, who struck out one and walked two. “It was her first complete game, which was nice,” High said. “We only had one error.” Victoria Smoker went 2-for4 with a run batted in. She singled to drive in Maddy Clark, who had doubled. Hassis and Sarah Arment each had an RBI as well. “Emily Ammon had two hits for us,” High added. “We had runners on second and third twice but didn’t get the run home,” added the coach. The Braves defeated Lancaster Catholic 11-6 on Monday, April 25, earning their second L-L League win of the year. Emily Ammon slugged a three-run home run and Hailey Yothers drove in four runs on a two-run homer and a two-run single. “We got a complete game out of Victoria Smoker,” High said. The coach went on to point out how the freshman worked out of a jam early on. “They sent nine batters to the plate in the first inning,” High explained. “They had four hits and two walks; they scored three runs.” Three runs on nine batters obviously meant that Smoker escaped a bases-loaded jam. “The next inning, we committed two errors, but turned a double play and got a ground out after that,” he added. “She retired them in order over the next three innings.” Smoker also helped herself with two runs batted in. “She swings a nice bat,” said High. “She is batting around .550 for us.” The Braves improved to 3-9 on the year with a 16-1 win at home over Lancaster Mennonite on Tuesday, April 26. Hassis pitched a complete game in the shortened ballgame. It lasted four innings. She allowed only three hits. The Braves scored 16 runs on eight hits, eight walks and two batters who were hit by a pitch. “It was 1-1 after two innings,” High explained. “In the third inning we sent 19 batters to the plate.” Among the Braves’ offensive leaders were Arment,

As camping season approaches, more people will likely be driving RVs to campgrounds, amusement parks, and music festivals. No matter the destination or length of the trip, it is important to keep safety in mind. Travelers should always be aware of the weather forecast before hitting the road so they are prepared for any rain, wind, or hail that Mother Nature may send their way. The weather can change quickly, so it is also important to keep up with weather updates via phone or radio in case bad weather appears unexpectedly. Travelers should have a weather contingency plan and make sure everyone on their trip knows what to do if an emergency occurs. There should be at least two ways out of the RV, including from the front and rear of the vehicle, and travelers should practice using these exits beforehand so that everyone is familiar with their duties during an emergency. For an escape to be effective, it must be planned, practiced, and rapidly put into action. Travelers should also practice fire and carbon monoxide (CO) safety. Campfires should be built at a safe distance from the RV. Fire can spread quickly, so RVs should be equipped with a fire extinguisher, such as an easy-touse fire extinguishing spray. Generators should never be used inside, where CO can collect. Instead, they should be placed at least 10 feet from the RV. Travelers should consider bringing a portable, tabletop CO alarm equipped with a sealed battery that provides up to 10 years of protection. An RV should be serviced by a qualified mechanic before departure, and travelers should be prepared for any car troubles that could happen along the way. In case of spotty cell service, travelers should bring a map. Also, drivers should know if their auto insurance policy includes features like roadside assistance, which could help in case of an emergency. Additionally, extra water and snacks should always be kept on hand.

since June 1999. By 2002, GSS purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to provide five people at a time with emergency housing. Currently, GSS owns 14 properties, totaling 100 beds and over 30,000 square feet. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 when it opened an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families that are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, case management services, emergency shelter, transitional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing. Since July 1, 2021, GSS has served 475 people, and more than 200 individuals have graduated from the organization’s programs and are in stable housing. Starting this year, GSS will offer its clients in-house counseling, and it will expand the women’s shelter in Ephra-
ta. The organization also opened a men’s shelter in Ephrata on April 1. Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing. The 15th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 10, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville, with tee times at 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Meals, beverages, and snacks will be provided, and participants will have chances to win prizes throughout the golf course. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to GSS. “Anytime anyone in the community is participating whether that’s through monthly donorship or coming to our events - they’re really making a difference right here in their own community,” said Mandy Johnson, director of community engagement at GSS. “We’re so grateful because without the support, we literally couldn’t do the work we’re doing.” “We live in a great community, and it’s being made even better with what GSS does every day,” stated Rachel Stebbins, EPC marketing director. “The Golf Outing is a fun way to enjoy the great
outdoors, meet some fellow do-gooders, and help put a dent in homelessness!” Preregistration is required and can be completed up to 48 hours before the event. For more information about the
