Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. Executive director Adam Nagle will speak for about 15 minutes to gatherings in the gym at both 7 and 8 p.m. Following that, teenagers and elementary school students will perform. The program in the gym will last up to 30 minutes. Lab noted that the homecoming is designed for those who remember the building from earlier days when it served as a school. “It will showcase how this historical building is being used to meet community needs,” she said. “A lot of people in this area went to grade school or high school here and have memories (of the building).” To keep the event safe for visitors and staff, time slots will be limited to 40 registrants. Lab noted, however, that there are other reasons for keeping groups of visitors small. “We want quality tours of about 10 to 15 (people),” she explained. Readers who wish to attend are asked to register by Thursday, May 6, at https://thefactoryministries .com or by calling 717-687-9594.

Researching His Roots
“My story is closely intertwined with my mother’s,” said Jacob Farneth of Quarryville. Jacob took over the mission of his mother Margo to research their family history following her death in 2019. “I have been honored and blessed to take up that mantle and try to step into those shoes,” said Jacob. Jacob inherited all the research his mother had done on their family

explained. He has spent time retracing his mother’s steps in order to connect with her thought process. He specified that the decision on when to add an ancestor to a tree involves a personal philosophy. “The further you go back, there are a lot of assumptions,” he shared, adding that many factors come into play. Often, he noted, the name will be misspelled. “Sometimes names were never written down because people couldn’t write or read,” he said. Jacob is thankful to have found other family members who are also tracing their roots. “It seems there are one in 20 family members who are really interested, and if enough family members are interested in piecing the little trees together, eventually you can connect them,” he said. While noting that internet technology is helpful in bringing together branches to form a larger picture, Jacob does not discount first-hand research. “If you meet a great-aunt at a reunion, ask questions and advance the tree a little further,” he suggested. “Every day you wait, it gets harder to do this research. It’s easier to go to a living relative and ask them questions. When they’re gone, you lose that.” Jacob said he has used www.ancestry.com intermittently, but he practices social etiquette when approaching possible relatives via social media. “You have to ask permission to dig into family trees,” he said. “You have to ask permission to add data (about someone else to your tree).” He noted that he has sent messages to possible family members asking politely to include them. “You have to be respectful. … you don’t want to bother them, but you want information,” he stated, adding that although Farneth is not a common name, he sometimes comes across potential family members and tries to find a shared ancestor. Jacob encourages others who are interested in finding their own
beginnings to follow their curiosity and continue to work to put the puzzle pieces into place, even if the process moves slowly. Finding other family members who are also searching is a bonus. “If you look wide enough, you will probably find family members who will encourage and inspire you and make it a collaborative effort,” he said.
Jacob Farneth of Quarryville displays the family tree that both he and his mother have worked to complete. Farneth took over the project when his mother, Margo, died in 2019.

tree. Before she passed, the two discussed what she had completed, tracing some family members back to the early 1600s, and where he would pick up to move forward. While Jacob and his mother shared an interest in genealogy, he noted that their paths diverge in some areas. “There are different strategies to researching your tree,” he said, noting that his mother wanted to see how far back she could trace her family, while he is more interested in the width of the tree and locating living family members. “We both cared very much about the tree, but we had different priorities,” he

The Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will roll through town on Sunday, May 9. This year’s 100-truck convoy will leave from the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction at 1:30 p.m. and will run a route from Manheim through Mount Joy. “The auto auction will not be open to the public, and we won’t be having the carnival we usually have, but there are still several ways for people to participate,” said Terry Finch, cochair of the convoy committee. “We’ll have a livestream on our chapter’s Facebook page, and we’ll post everything also on www.wishcovoy.org. We are also going to have a drivethrough chicken dinner pickup at Country Table Restaurant in Mount Joy, which is right along the route.” Preorders are being taken at the event website. The public is also invited to participate in an online auction that will run from Saturday, May 1, through Monday, May 10, at www.wish convoy.org. “We have a lot of ‘experiences’ packages, plus gift cards to restaurants, playground equipment, trips, just a lot of fun stuff to bid on,” Finch said. “Some of the Wish children create items like birdhouses or pictures or sculptures, and those always do really well.”

The Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will run through Manheim and Mount Joy on Sunday, May 9. Each star on the Wish Angel trailer represents a Wish child in the area who has passed away in the 32 years of the event.
People are invited to cheer the convoy along the route, which can be found at https://tinyurl.com /u8ddcvrw. “There’s great viewing at LCBC Manheim campus, where they have a huge parking lot,” Finch recommended. “There’s also options to watch at the Country Table and along Main Street in Mount Joy.” The convoy committee is working on ways to include Wish children in the convoy. “Because our Wish children can’t be in public right now, we’re working on getting Wish kids on video chat to talk to the drivers,” Finch explained. “Some of them have been riding with the same driver for years, and they really feel a connection.” This is the second time the event will begin at the Manheim Auto Auction. Last year’s event was a scaleddown convoy of 30 drivers. “We are thrilled to be partnering with the
Mother’s Day Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy for our second year,” said Joey Hughes, vice president/general manager of the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. “The Mother’s Day Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy is such an important fundraising event, and our team at Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction is so honored to host it at our location.” Money raised by the convoy helps to grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. “The convoy and the events occurring with it help fund 75% of the wishes in the Susquehanna Valley,” Finch noted, adding that the event committee has a goal of raising $300,000. “In addition to coming out on the day of the event, you can visit wishconvoy.org to see all of our drivers who are fundraising and to donate to any driver you’d like to.” Pawsome Pets specialty publication will be mailed to 81,000 Lancaster County homes.

One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to GSS. “With COVID, people have been hit really hard this past year, so there are many people in need of the services that GSS offers,” noted EPC marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “You could be helping a family member or your neighbor.” Caprell said one of the biggest reasons to attend the event is that events such as the EPC Golf Outing are important to the funding of GSS. “This event can help hundreds and hundreds of people and provide them with a safe place to call home,” she emphasized. “Your donation and participation will make a direct impact on the community.” To date, the EPC Golf Outing has raised more than $100,000 for charity. PV Softball Tops Eagles in High Scoring Final
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
When the term “winning ugly” was coined, a game like the 17-13 Pequea Valley softball team’s victory over Cocalico was molded as an example. On Friday, April 23, the Braves defeated the Eagles, in extra innings no less, by that margin. The Braves scored seven runs early; the Eagles tied it with seven in the fourth inning. “We scored three in the sixth
and so did they,” Pequea head coach Doug High recalled. “We scored seven in the eighth and they scored three. We won 17-13.” What was remarkable about this victory was Olivia Ammon recording 20 strikeouts for the Braves, who improved their record to 7-3 on the year. “She set the school’s singlegame record for strikeouts,” High pointed out, going on to note the former record holder
eight-inning game, her teammates only needed to get four more outs. Olivia Clark went 3-for-5 with a double and a triple. Abby Tobelmann had four runs scored, crushing a home run, drawing two walks, and stealing two bases. Emily Ammon had two base hits - a home run and a double - knocking in three runs. She also swiped two bags. And Hailey Yothers had two hits and three RBIs.
LOHF To Offer Scholarships
Royer’s Donates To Food Bank
Geoff Royer (left), vice president, central operations, Royer’s Flowers & Gifts, recently presented a $15,000 donation to David Carl, corporate partnership manager, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.
Royer’s Flowers & Gifts recently donated $15,000 to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, which is based in Harrisburg and serves 27 counties. This donation is enough to fund 90,000 meals. Of its 16 stores overall, familyowned Royer’s operates 13, including the Stephenson’s Flowers & Gifts store in Harrisburg, in the food bank’s market region. Tom Royer, president and CEO of Lebanon-based Royer’s said the
very familiar to him. “My daughter, Jessica High, had 19 in a game against Lampeter-Strasburg in 2008. I remember L-S won that game 2-1.” The Braves had 17 runs on 17 hits and committed four errors. The Eagles scored 13 on nine hits and five walks while committing five errors. “On defense, we only recorded four putouts,” High pointed out. Indeed, with Ammon setting down 20 batters on strikes in an
donation reflects the company’s gratitude for the support it has received during the pandemic. Joe Arthur, executive director of the food bank, said the donation will help provide healthy, nutritious food to families, seniors and veterans who are affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. For more information about the food bank or Royer’s, visit www.centralpafoodbank.org and www.royers.com, respectively.

The Braves improved to 7-2 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League (8-3 overall) with a 10-0 shutout of Elco on Wednesday. Ammon had 10 strikeouts while pitching a two-hit shutout. “She was able to move the ball around and hit her spots,” High said. “She had good velocity.” Offensively, seven of the Braves starters had base hits, totaling 14 on the day. “It was one of those team efforts,” said High.

Lancaster EMS Slates Course The Education Department of Lancaster EMS announced its “Learn While You Earn” program. The program will be the first full-time academy for eligible candidates to earn a Pennsylvania Bureau of EMS-approved EMT - Basic Certification. This program is a collaborative effort between Lancaster EMS and PA CareerLink. Eligible candidates will be hired as a full-time Lancaster EMS employee and compensated at a training hourly wage while in attendance at the Pennsylvania Bureau of EMS’ EMT- Basic Certification course, which requires a minimum of 40 hours per week. Upon successful completion of the program and after obtaining a Pennsylvania Bureau of EMS certification, the employee will be promoted to EMT-B with the commensurate pay rate increase and associated benefits. Candidates will also agree to an 18month employment commitment to Lancaster EMS after certification. EMT candidates will be recruited from the general population with emphasis on high school graduating seniors. Classes will begin in September at the Lancaster EMS Millersville Station, 100 E. Charlotte St., Millersville. The first academy class is expected to be completed by mid-December, with candidates working effective Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022. The application and employment process will consist of a phone interview, program entrance assessments as well as a personal interview by a formal panel of current Lancaster EMS employees. Following completion of all pre-acceptance processes, the individual will either be offered a position or placed on a potential candidate waitlist. Those with potential interest in this full-time education to work program should contact 717-481-4841, ext. 234, or emtacademy@ lemsa.com or visit www.lemsa.com/ emscertification.asp.

In a second tent, also open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friendship Heart Gallery will offer some artwork for sale, including items from the Primitives by Cathy collection. Among these will be water bottles and blocks that sit on shelves and bear the work of a Friendship artist and sometimes inspirational messages. “(Primitives by Cathy) takes Friendship artwork and puts it on home décor pieces,” said Link, who noted that coasters and notebooks will be among the pieces for sale. “It’s not just a gift; it’s a gift with purpose and meaning,” said Link, who noted that a portion of the sale will go back to the gallery. She said both the plants and the artwork make great Mother’s Day gifts. Link said that she hopes some individuals who are served by Friendship Community will be at the Fest. “Doran has been at previous Fests,” she said. Doran, who is legally blind, is known for the woven potholders he sells by donation. “It’s a craft he loves to do, and he donates proceeds back to Friendship,” said Link, who added that the potholders can be used as hotpads and coasters, and that each is colorful and distinctive. “It’s art and function (together),” she noted. Another individual who may attend is Josh Doughty, who fulfilled his lifelong dream of writing a book along with his home-based services team member, Dave, who meets with him regularly. “They’re buddies,” said Link, who explained that Dave encouraged Josh in the writing process. Josh will bring copies of “Josh’s Journey … With Family, Friends & God” to the Fest. A drive-through chicken barbecue will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of this year’s Fest. Both individual half-chickens and chicken meals will be sold. Meals will include a half-chicken, applesauce, chips, a roll with butter, and a beverage. Chicken may be purchased by car or as a walk-up. There will be no seating area. Link said organizers are looking forward to the opportunity to engage with the community in a

School Creates New Scholarship The Janus School, an independent kindergarten through 12th-grade day school in central Pennsylvania dedicated to the needs of students with learning differences, announced the new Inspired Beginnings Scholarship, a program for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. The scholarship offers $4,700 in funds each year a student is enrolled at Janus. For children with dyslexia, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder and other non-verbal and executive functioning learning differences, early access to support resources can be critical to success in and out of the classroom. Inspired Beginnings is focused on helping families gain access to educational and support resources that help their children develop learning strategies early. All families with children in kindergarten through fifth grade at The Janus School are eligible to receive the Inspired Beginnings Scholarship following admission. While receiving the scholarship, families will also still be eligible to apply for other tuition assistance and financial aid. To learn more about The Janus School and its admission process, visit www.thejanus school.org/admissions.
