Making Masks In PV By Ann Mead Ash

Narvon resident Marlene Stoltzfus McLamb began making masks for friends and family toward the end of March. On April 3, long before Gov. Tom Wolf announced that it would be mandatory to wear masks in public places, her husband posted on Facebook about his wife’s talents with a sewing machine. “It exploded from there,” recalled McLamb, who said that within 24 hours of the post, the family had received between 200 and 300 orders. McLamb makes the masks for free or by donation for health care workers or those who work in retirement communities. “For anyone who is on the front lines, I donate (the mask),” said McLamb, who made a mask for family friend Karla Neff, director of Pequea Valley elementary advocacy at The Factory Ministries. Neff has worn hers when handing out lunches to Pequea Valley School District students during the weekly distributions at The Factory. Masks are available for others at a nominal cost. On April 4, McLamb went to work, completing between 900 and 1,000 masks in the next 10 days.

Sarah Adams, of Lititz, was 16 weeks pregnant with her son, Davin, when she and her husband, Clark, received heartbreaking news in May 2018. “We found out … that he had a rare terminal condition,” recalled Sarah, who noted that her son’s problems were caused by a genetic condition called Noonan’s syndrome. Neither she nor her husband carries the gene for the condition. In the face of the news, both Sarah and Clark turned to their faith. “We know God can heal, but we know He doesn’t always heal,” said Sarah. “Every week that (Davin) was living and growing and sick, (we thought), ‘Let’s see if we can get further.’” Sarah said the situation taught her how to live in the See Our Baby s Legacy pg 7

“The first five days or so, I was sewing 12 to 14 hours per day,” said McLamb. “I was doing nothing but sewing (because) everybody wanted (masks) as quickly as possible.” The masks McLamb is creating are made of 100% cotton. Each has two layers, three pleats in the front, and elastic to hold the mask on over the ears. Most of the masks she has made for women are in prints, and most of the masks for men are in solid colors, including black, brown, tan, gray, and army green. She has also made masks for women in solid colors including teal, coral, pink, and purple. She creates masks in children’s sizes as well. “I would love to have people pick their fabric,” said McLamb, who noted that because of the number of orders and the request for quick turnaround, that has not been possible. Nor has it been an issue. “People weren’t too picky (about color),” she noted.

families in need through a relationship with New Covenant Church of God, 111 E. Chestnut St., Ephrata. Food is distributed at the church every Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Over the years, the need for family food boxes has grown, but in recent weeks, the demand has gone up dramatically, according to Lapp. “In October 2010, we committed to providing seven boxes (of food) per week to a local pastor,” recalled Lapp. “On April 4 (this year), we packed 4,500 boxes in one day.” Lapp noted that each box is packed with 35 to 40 pounds of food, designed to feed a family of four. Among the contents are fruits and vegetables, milk, crackers, chips, and yogurt. “There’s a nice assortment of food going into the boxes,” said Lapp. The organization is also working with employers who have had to lay off their employees to help meet the needs of those who cannot work during the COVID-19 crisis. In addition to the number of boxes being distributed, the way in which the three shifts of 60 to 70 volunteers each handle those boxes has changed as well. Lapp said he spoke with both Congressman

that need the food.” In the last few weeks, the changes wrought by COVID-19 restrictions have affected the ministry in a variety of ways. Most recently, the organization has been contacted by a number of dairy farms with milk to donate. “We had 20 people call in the (first week of April) that had milk for us,” said Lapp, who noted that BOH has connected with a co-operative in Holtwood to receive milk. “They are sending two truckloads a day,” said Lapp during the second week of April. “We received close to 10,000 gallons of milk that we had pasteurized and bottled and we were able to distribute.” Some of that milk came to CrossNet Ministries in New Holland on April 7. Amy Marburger, food and nutrition manager at CrossNet, was excited to receive 75 gallons. “Kreider Farms (of Manheim) pasteurized and bottled (the milk),” said Marburger, who noted the availability made a big difference for ELANCO-area families. “We are able to double what we give our families in milk this week,” she said. Ryan Aument about how to do outreaches during this time without drawing large crowds of people. “(The answer) was to prepack food in a family box and do drivethrough-style outreaches where we put a box of food in people’s trunks,” explained Lapp. “We also have a health screening at our building where our volunteers are screened by local EMTs under the direction of a doctor (connected to) WellSpan Hospital,” said Lapp. “We want to keep everybody safe while they’re working here, and if we can control the risk to our volunteers, we can greatly reduce the risk

Freedom Life (FL) Church recently launched a Boxes of Hope program that will provide food items as well as words of encouragement to individuals and families affected by COVID-19. Boxes will be given out in the areas served by Freedom Life, including southern Lancaster and Chester counties, as well as the areas surrounding Milesburg, Centre County. Boxes will be distributed throughout the month of May. Items in the box will differ depending on the number and ages of people in the household, but each will contain nonperishable food and personal care items, as well as activity books for children and puzzle books, such as word search and crossword puzzles, for seniors. Each box will also contain the book “Hope in the Dark: Believing God Is Good When Life Is Not” by Craig Groeschel. Church staff members note that the Boxes of Hope program is not designed to replace local food banks. “We are not competing with the food banks because they are doing a great job and the church has been donating to local food banks,” said Angie Dearolf, FL communications director. “This is an emergency care package. We are putting in a note from our pastor, snacks and bottles of water, paper supplies, cleaning supplies and activities for children and seniors who are quarantined. It’s a gift of encouragement.” Donations are currently being accepted at the church’s main office, located at 447 Noble Road, Christiana, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donations will not be accepted on Fridays through Mondays. Items should be placed in the carts located outside of the gymnasium doors on the lower level. Acceptable food items for donation include canned vegetables, canned or

dried fruit, canned tuna and salmon, canned ham and chicken, instant mashed potatoes, pasta, rice, peanut butter, powered milk, whole grain cereals, crackers, granola bars and applesauce. Nonfood items that are being accepted include toilet paper, paper towels, diapers, crayons and games and

Together, we can stop the spread. Are you in? Even as we make strides against COVID-19, it’s not time to let up. Following the proper guidelines remains critical — because that is still the most effective way to slow the spread of the coronavirus. • Stay home as much as you can • Practice social distancing — keep at least 6 feet between yourself and others • Wear a mask in public, covering your nose and mouth • Cover coughs and sneezes • Wash hands often — for at least 20 seconds For a quicker return to the things you love, we need everyone to be in this together. For your family. For your neighbors. For our entire community.

of the GOTR At Home curriculum. The first lesson, which was released the week of March 16, is called “We Are Unique; We Are Similar.” The lessons can be completed by a girl alone, but they are designed for all household members. “This is a family, athome, shared experience,” said GOTR Lancaster program director Jennifer West. “We want to lift up the community and bring everyone together to share in the GOTR experience.” Each lesson includes a main concept called a big idea and an explanation of why that idea matters. Games and discussion questions based on ways to explore the theme are included, along with physical activities. “What we have are called Movement Mixes,” explained West, who said that suggestions might include skipping, running in place, or doing star jumps for a certain amount of time. “Not everybody can get outside (to exercise),” West explained. “(The lessons) are encouraging whatever activity you can do at home.” West said that the lessons are sent via email and text to all the families and coaches each week. “We encourage the coaches to reach out to the families and see how the girls are enjoying the lessons and keep them involved in whatever capacity they can,” said West, who noted that she realizes many of the coaches, who are often teachers or parents of the girls who take part, are still working at some level. “(We appreciate) whatever they can do,” said West. The annual GOTR spring 5K, which is normally held at Franklin & Marshall College in mid-May, will be a virtual event this year. “We are calling it the Virtual GOTR 5K Your Way presented by Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster,” said West, who added that the 5K will be available to complete from Friday, May 29, through Sunday, May 31, and will include various options in addition to running and walking. “We have a bingo card sheet of activities,” explained West. “If (a participant) wants to run the 5K distance over those three days, they can, (but) if they can’t or don’t want to, they can do the different activities on the bingo sheet.” This year’s 5K will be free for those who sign up, but donations will be accepted. “We will email a 5K bib (to those who register) that can be printed out and colored and made their own to wear while doing the activities,” said West. Interested individuals may register at www.gotrlancaster.org/5k-detail. #GOTRGotYourBack is an effort that GOTR has undertaken to engage the broader community during this time. “It’s our social media piece, which is all about planting positive messages in the homes of anyone who follows us,” said GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson. “There are challenges (to complete) … and encouraging words. It’s all about bringing our mission to life.” Johnson noted that the organization feels it is especially important to spread a message of kindness. “Just as our 5K is like opening a bottle of sunshine, that’s what we want to be able to do during this time,” said Johnson.

Impact! Missions Continues To Serve

R058269

By Dayna M. Reidenouer

“Now that county residents have been ordered to shelter in place, it is more important than ever that every family has somewhere to stay that is warm, dry, and livable,” IMPACT! Missions (IM) founder and executive director Matt Beakes wrote in an email newsletter on March 31. “As this crisis unfolds, IMPACT! Missions has not wavered in its commitment to making a difference in the lives of our Lancaster County neighbors who are struggling with poverty and limited housing.” The IM emergency repair ministry to low-income homeowners is continuing to operate, albeit with modified protocols. The work crews are averaging two projects a week. These have included building a wheelchair ramp for a woman who needed to come home to avoid being quarantined in a physical rehabilitation facility, dealing with mold remediation and installing new cabinets in a kitchen with an ongoing leaky faucet, and replacing a leaking shower head and repairing damage to the ceiling and wall as well as installing handrails for safety in the home of a single mother with four children. “We are practicing social distancing by working on open air projects, and the enclosed projects we are separating by rooms, and family units are staying together,” Beakes related. “We also provide cleaning materials and wipes to wipe off tools and materials. We have hot water and soap on hand as well as packets of hand sanitizers. We do have masks - not the preferred ones used by the medical community and request anyone not feeling well in any manner to stay home.” On a limited basis, IM is continuing to renovate blighted properties for eventual resale. Four houses are in process, with the goal to have them ready to be shown as soon as possible once the situation improves. A significant amount of working capital is tied up in those projects, however, as the sale proceeds are IM’s single largest source of operating revenue. That has put some financial strain on the organization. Another source of uncertainty has been the temporary closure of the IM building products store at 55 Refton Road, Refton. The store was closed to the public in mid-March in compliance with state directives. Ironically, one of IM’s goals for 2020 was to expand the store’s operating hours from two days to three. Having to go in the opposite direction has resulted in a loss of about $2,500 in revenue every week. Community support has been integral to IM’s ongoing work in Lancaster County. moment. “I coped by enjoying the time we had, so we had a gender reveal party and a baby shower,” said Sarah, who noted that she has a number of photos from throughout her pregnancy. On Aug. 1, 2018, Sarah noticed she did not feel Davin moving as often as usual. “We went to the doctor, and they did an ultrasound,” said Sarah. “There was no heartbeat.” The condition had caused Davin to have hydrops - a fluid buildup in areas of the body - that was too hard on the baby’s heart. Sarah’s body was swelling as well from the excess fluid. A vertical C-section was scheduled for Aug. 2. When Sarah was being prepped for the surgery, she asked one of the attending medical professionals how long she would be allowed to hold her son. “She said, ‘As long as you are here,’” recalled Sarah, who knew she would be in bed in the hospital for four days. Following the surgery, her son was wrapped in blankets and brought to her. “It was great to meet him, even though he wasn’t there in spirit, because there was the connection (from carrying him),” said Sarah. “It was such a great experience to have him all day.” Sarah learned that she was able keep her son with her because Women & Babies Hospital has a piece of equipment made in the United Kingdom called a CuddleCot. “I had never heard of it,” said Sarah, who noted that the CuddleCot, which had been donated to Women and Babies by another family that lost a baby, is a cooling device that extends the time parents can spend with a child who has been stillborn or died shortly after birth. “We kept him (with us) for three days,” said Sarah. The availability of the CuddleCot was the beginning of a journey that led Sarah and Clark to found Our Baby’s Legacy, with a mission to “provide families of pregnancy and infant loss with tools for comfort, community for support, and an opportunity to create a legacy for their child.” The CuddleCot was not the only comforting experience to inspire Sarah, whose sister had added weighted beads to a stuffed bunny for Sarah. “There are companies that make weighted teddy bears for people who are grieving, (whether) it’s the loss of a child or another kind of grief,” said Sarah. “There are a lot of See Legacy pg 8

I include it in photos. It has become a memorial to him. Around the first anniversary of her son’s birth, Sarah wanted to do something special to commemorate him. “I thought I would work to donate a CuddleCot, she said, noting that raising the funds for the device led her to a revelation. “I wanted to start a nonprofit that included all these tools for comfort. By including other grieving families, Sarah has made it possible for

IMPACT! from pg 6 celebrated its 10th anniversary on Feb. 22. IM started out in southern Lancaster County as a way for church groups to save on the costs of weeklong mission trips by offering local work camps serving residents in need. Over the decade, it has morphed into much more and now serves the entire county. Beakes related that IM has overseen the project management on the renovation of 30 houses, most of which had been condemned. “We restored neighborhoods and communities,” he said. “We not only made houses beautiful, but we changed lives.” IM welcomes support to continue changing lives by making homes warmer, safer, and dryer. Donations may be made at www.givegab.com/campaigns/ covid-19. Readers may also call 717-806-5770 to set up recurring contributions. For more information about IMPACT! Missions or to volunteer, individuals may email info@impact camps.org.

Food Drive To Benefit Food Bank WGAL 8 is partnering with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank to launch the Feed Your Neighbors online food drive for those facing extraordinary hardships brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. This effort, which began on April 10, is part of WGAL 8’s ongoing Community Connection initiative to help strengthen communities across the Susquehanna Valley.

The financial contributions through the online fundraising campaign will help ensure people can receive healthy meals, while staying safe in their homes. In the midst of the stay-at-home order across the commonwealth and the associated social distancing guidelines, the online food drive offers a way to support those in need. To donate, readers may visit www.wgal.com/community.
