Herb Fisher has been collecting information and photographs on the local trolley companies for the past 12 years, and he has a collection of approximately 9,000 photographs of the electric trolleys and trolley tracks. On April 8, Fisher was at the Pequea Valley Public Library to share his knowledge of the Lancaster County trolley system prior to World War II with members of the Leacock Township Historical Society and interested members of the public in a talk he titled “The Lancaster to Gap Trolley Line.” With the aim of helping his audience to become more spatially aware of remnants of the trolley system in the local area, Fisher explored the lack of transportation in the Intercourse area in the early 1900s and then took his listeners on a virtual trolley ride from the center of Lancaster to Coatesville. Fisher

noted that trolleys were a main mode of transportation for local residents traveling from place to place prior to World War II. Fisher showed several photos of the stagecoach that once ran regularly from Intercourse to Lancaster and back. The stage was owned by D. Coleman Diller, for whom Diller Avenue is named. According to Fisher, Diller took passengers back and forth and picked up supplies in Lancaster for members of the Intercourse community, stuffing the boot of the stage with a variety of items. In 1910, Diller bought a truck and used it to ferry items. The stage eventually became the Penn Highway Transit Company. Fisher also displayed a picture of a map that showed the trolley lines running from Lancaster into Gap, Christiana, Coatesville, Kissel Hill, and Lititz, as well as up Route 23 to Blue Ball and other areas of Lancaster See Trolleys pg 4

FCA To Host Power Camp

Herb Fisher prepared to give a lecture on the trolleys of yesteryear when he addressed the Leacock Township Historical Society and interested members of the public on April 8. Fisher’s talk and photos followed the trolley line from Lancaster to Coatesville.

Tremblay Exhibit from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash

New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) board member Wilbur Horning recently expressed how honored the society feels to have been blessed with more than 60 original works and pencil sketches by the late Myrtle Tremblay. “We consider it a compliment,” said Wilbur recently. NHAHS will display “The Unseen Works of Myrtle Tremblay” at its museum, 207 E. Main St., New Holland, throughout the summer. A formal opening will be held on Sunday, May 19, at 2 p.m. Tremblay was known for her paintings of Lancaster County scenery, but many of the works that will be featured in the exhibit were completed in Guatemala, Mexico, Colombia, and elsewhere in South America prior to Tremblay’s move to New Holland. The technique used in these paintings is considered different from her later works. Tremblay was born Myrtle Cobb in Albion, Mich., in 1908. In her youth, she taught herself to draw by copying pictures. She attended Bay City Junior College, where her talent was recognized and she became art editor of the school yearbook. Tremblay earned a Bachelor of Science from Central Michigan University before attending the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Art Center in New York. Beginning in 1937, she traveled

to South America, Europe, and Asia, along with the northwest United States, painting scenes from her journey. It was during this period that the works that will be on display at NHAHS were created. In the 1940s, Tremblay sketched servicemen and servicewomen for the United Services Organization in Detroit and the American Theater Wing in New York City. Tremblay and her husband moved to New Holland in 1952 when her husband went to work for New Holland Machine as a photographer. Tremblay remained in New Holland until she died at the age of 102. Her works, for which she had received many awards, were displayed and sold throughout the county, often to help raise funds for local organizations. NHAHS board member Don Horning noted that the museum received the donation of the artwork in July of 2017. Don asked members of the Lancaster art community to help evaluate the pieces. A decision was made to tell Tremblay’s story, including a written narrative, along with examples of her art. In October 2018, Win Reber, a retired art teacher known for holding lectures on various artrelated topics for community groups, began helping to sort and catalog the art. “Win caught the vision, and we met, and he started working,” said Don, adding, “The goal is to preserve (Tremblay’s) memory.”

Reber held a lecture on Tremblay in March and an abbreviated show of Tremblay’s international paintings was on display at Garden Spot Village in April. NHAHS is also grateful to Joyce Heberlein and Julia and Terry Swartz for their help in preserving Tremblay’s story. At least 10 of Tremblay’s works will be offered for sale during the exhibit. Funds raised by the sale of these paintings will help cover the costs of processing and preparing of the pieces. The community is invited to visit the exhibit at the NHAHS museum, located on the second floor of the Kauffman Building. The museum, which is handicapped-accessible, is currently open on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Readers who would like more information may visit www.nhhistorical.com. Pictured on front: New Holland Area Historical Society representatives (from left) Don Horning, Wilbur Horning, and Lou Ann Miller display works of the late Myrtle Tremblay. The historical society museum, 207 E. Main St., New Holland, will host an exhibit of the artist’s works throughout the summer. A formal opening will be held at the museum on Sunday, May 19, at 2 p.m.

Garden Club Slates Plant Sale Town and Country Garden Club of Lancaster will host its 13th Annual Plant Sale at the Manheim Township Community Park Pavilion, East Petersburg Road, Neffsville, on Saturday, May 11, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Locally grown plants from club members’ gardens, such as vegetable, herb, and flower plants, along with seedlings, pots, planters, books, tools, and gardenrelated items, will be available for purchase. on Sunday, June 30, in conjunction with a fireworks display to celebrate Independence Day . The first concert of July will feature Nooky Jones, which Deck called a “hip” band, noting that it should attract a young crowd. The group will perform in the amphitheater on Sunday, July 7. On Saturday, July 13, Matches, a local band with a sound Deck noted is reminiscent of Tower of Power or Chicago, will play. The Sunday, July 14, band, MINAS, was chosen in response to suggestions made on the music series’ website. The Brazilian couple plays Latin-flavored music with an expanded appeal. “They have a wonderful sound,” said Deck, who described MINAS as bossa nova. “It’s very danceable without being hard driving,” he said. “It’s bring-someoneto-dance-with kind of music.” Lachy Doley, a Hammond organ player who is visiting from Australia, will play on Sunday, July 21. “He is the Jimi Hendrix of the Hammond organ. He pounds away,” said Deck. July will finish up with Celtic band Réalta on Sunday, July 28.

The Sunday, Aug. 4, concert will feature Danny Kortchmar and Friends, studio musicians known for backing up Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, and others. “They will play lots of familiar music,” said Deck. On Sunday, Aug. 11, country music singer Phil Vassar will play at the park. “His songs are very Americana country,” said Deck. On Saturday, Aug. 17, a special event highlighting the 50th anniversary of Woodstock will feature local artists and more wellknown songs. The Sunday, Aug. 18, concert will feature blues artist Davy Knowles, and the season will conclude on Aug. 25 with the Cajun-flavored sounds of Terrance Simien and Zydeco Experience. “He is very engaging and a big crowd pleaser,” shared Deck. More information about the Summer Concert Series may be found by visiting www.longspark.org. Long’s Park Art Festival, which benefits the Summer Music Series, is slated for Labor Day weekend, Friday, Aug. 30, to Sunday, Sept. 1, at Long’s Park.

of the trolley crossing,” said Fisher. The trolley later passed behind the Bellevue Hotel and near the location of the Gap Town Clock. “The trolley ran here behind these houses along Route 41,” said Fisher. The trolley then ran to Atglen and eventually to Coatesville, where passengers who wanted to continue to take the trolley to Downingtown had to get out and cross the railroad tracks to pick up the next car. Fisher pointed out that a similar situation occurred in Lititz near the train station. Fisher included photos of a

bed of stone put down in Paradise in preparation for laying the trolley tracks. He estimated the photo was taken in 1905 or 1906. Along the way on the simulated journey, Fisher pointed out interesting facts, such as the fact that trolley tracks are set wider than train tracks. Fisher first became interested in the trolleys in 2007. “I was fascinated with old pictures,” said Fisher. “I carried a camera, and I took pictures of pictures, and then I would get in my car and go find the present day location of that picture and match them up.” The Leacock Township Historical Society generally meets informally on the fourth Monday of the month; however, there will be no meeting in May because the fourth Monday is Memorial Day. up in addition to women. The event will include praise and worship led by Matt and Kim Goss, speakers, and a number of workshops. “This is for anyone, (whether) married or single,” said Germaine, who explained that the “BIG” in Dream BIG! stands for “Bringing in God.” “When you bring God into your dreams, you ignite your passion,” she explained. “It’s for anyone who has had a dream and let go.” As a single mom, Germaine noted that it was hard for her to dream again, but through founding the Dare to Dream events, she took that step. An important part of Dream BIG! will be the workshops, which Germaine noted are specifically geared toward helping people move forward. “One couple (will hold a) workshop on embracing brokenness,” noted Germaine. “(That’s about breaking) free (from) our past to dream again.” The 2019 workshops will include “The Path That Brings

“Dream BIG!” that is based on Germaine’s life story. In September 2018, Germaine traveled to Nashville to record the vocals. Grammy winner Jonathan Crone oversaw the recording of the song, which Germaine coproduced with Copeland. A launch party will be held for the song on Monday, May 13, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Landis Hall at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Admission is free. “God is doing amazing things,” said Germaine. “I always wanted to sing. I wanted to go to Nashville.” Realizing one of her dreams has inspired Germaine to want to share with others. “Dreaming reminds us of who we are in Christ,” said Germaine. “I want to encourage (attendees) to dream again and dream big!” There is no charge to attend Dream BIG! However, registration is necessary. Individuals wishing to attend may search for “Dream BIG! Ignite Your Passion” at www.eventbrite.com to register by Saturday, June 8. Say the word “gala” and visions of triple-digit ticket prices might come to mind. Tickets for the Grand Purple Gala set for Saturday, May 18, however, are priced in the mid-double-digits, thanks to corporate and individual sponsors. “We want it to be affordable,” said gala president Coleen Frazier. “We want caregivers to be there too.” Folks who buy tickets will be admitted to the gala, which has the theme “Spring Into the Light” this year. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and will be held at the Cultural Center at Willow Valley Communities, 900 Willow Valley Lakes Drive, Willow Street. The dress code is spring semiformal, and only folks age 21 or older will be admitted.

Guests may visit food stations, where they may partake of wings, empanadas, meatballs, charcuterie, a version of cheesesteaks, scones, cupcakes, chocolate-covered strawberries, and more. Some beverages will be included, and others may be purchased separately. Two Pints Shy, a power folk band that strives to be fun and energetic, will perform music for dancing. The group plays covers from six decades as well as some originals. A silent auction will run during the event. Trips to a themed amusement park in Florida, Las Vegas, and New York will be up for bids. Other items in the auction will include a firepit filled with goodies, themed baskets, certificates for lunches with government officials, golf and spa packages, a Penn State Universi-

Additionally, there will be opportunities to enter a prize drawing. The proceeds from the Grand Purple Gala will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association by way of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The local event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Overlook Park, 605 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. The tagline of the signature fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association is “lead the way to Alzheimer’s first survivor.” Currently, Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, according to www.alz.org. The Alzheimer’s Association funds research into the disease, and it also offers support groups for people with the disease and for their caregivers, provides online message boards through ALZConnected, and hosts a free, nationwide helpline that offers information and referrals. The Grand Purple Gala was created by Julie Ehrgood and Frazier, both of whom have family members with Alzheimer’s. They were joined by additional women whom the disease has affected in some way. Frazier’s personal experience with Alzheimer’s came

from her grandfather and her work as a nurse in memory care facilities. “I wanted to do something that had an impact,” Frazier said. “I did a lot of education with families. It’s an exhausting disease.” Relating an incident during which her grandfather slipped out of the house tremendously underdressed for the cold weather, she added, “It’s scary.” According to the Alzheimer’s Association, as folks age, some forgetfulness is normal. When memory loss disrupts everyday life, however, that is indicative that Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia may be developing. A decline in thinking and reasoning skills is also a red flag, and folks should see their doctor. Group member Mary Read has dubbed herself an Alzheimer’s ambassador, as she has been dealing with the early onset of these symptoms. Frazier noted that the disease is such that the diagnosis cannot be confirmed until after death. In living people, diagnosis is made based on cognitive testing. “It’s a very grueling process,” Frazier said. Information about Alzheimer’s disease will be available at the Grand Purple Gala. Folks may buy tickets in advance for a discount by visiting https://717events.ticket spice.com/the-grand-purple -gala, or they may pay full price at the door. Dawn Ranck Hower, pastor of New Holland Mennonite Church, which oversees the NHELC ministry, gave special credit to Bortzel and Morales. “This would not have happened without the hard work of Wanda and Jennifer,” she said. “They (persevered) with all the details.” She also noted that she was grateful for how employees and volunteers pulled together to help gain the new rating. “The staff was willing to be trained and make adjustments,” she said. “It was really a team effort.” NHELC staff hopes to achieve a STARS 4 rating, which is the highest number awarded by Keystone Stars, in the future. Bortzel noted that adding running water in some of the classrooms is on the list of future changes. Individual cubbies will also be installed in the hallways to help prevent the spread of germs. “ We are so excited to be a STAR 3 (early education program),” said Wanda Bortzel, director of New Holland Early Learning Center (NHELC), 18 Western Ave., New Holland. NHELC was awarded the STAR 3 rating at the end of 2018. Keystone Stars is an early education rating system that rates quality improvement. Bortzel, who became director at the center in 2014, said that NHELC has been making a dedicated effort toward earning the rating over the last two years. Gaining her director’s credentials was an essential piece of the new rating. “I had to take master’slevel courses,” said Bortzel, who completed the last of the necessary nine credit hours in December 2018. According to NHELC assistant director Jen Morales, the center was required to make a number of changes to qualify for STARS 3. Policies, training for the staff, and

paperwork were all completed with the help of a coach from the Keystone Stars program. Room assessment was an important part of the effort. “We had to look at what was in the classroom and how it was used and how the teachers interacted with the students,” said Morales, who noted that science and math equipment, furniture, ethnically diverse dolls, and wall art that depicted a variety of cultures, ages, and families were all purchased. One of the largest projects was separating the playground into dedicated areas and purchasing new equipment. “We redid our entire playground to have separate areas for children,” said Morales, who explained that the areas are divided by age with individual sections for infants, toddlers, prekindergarten-age children, and school-age students. One area where NHELC shone was in the center’s openness to children with special needs. “(Keystone Stars was) impressed by our program for children with

Braves Blank Columbia in Four Innings by AraGrigorian

Pequea Valley played Columbia in a Section Four ballgame on the road Monday night. The timely hitting by the Braves’ offense and seven walks issued by the Crimson Tide pitching led to a 16-0 Pequea win, raising the Braves’ Lancaster-Lebanon League record to 7-7 and 8-7 overall. Braves’ head coach Dwayne Reiter summed it up as an ideal scenario for a win. “Their pitcher struggled a little bit with control and we hit the ball well. We were also aggressive on the bases,” Reiter remarked. “The boys came out and did their job.” Adryan Yothers needed just four innings to earn a complete-game victory. He had six strikeouts while pitching a two-hit shutout. “He came out and pitched a strong game,” said Reiter. “He was hitting his spots.” Yothers also helped his cause with a hit and two runs batted in. Dalton Temple had a huge game for the Braves, going 2-for-2 with a double, a walk and three runs scored. He also drove in two runs. Jack Olonovich, Cam Yoder and Zachary Lynch each knocked in two runs also. Parker Allain and Dylan Knott each scored two runs. “Cam, Dalton and Jack had big hits for us,” said Reiter. “We had a lot of walks and a couple of hit batters. Pretty much everyone got on base and

scored. That made it nice.” With the mercy rule, Yothers was spared having to go deep into the ballgame. That’s key in a baseball schedule that can quickly change with weather-related postponements that take their toll on starting rotations. “I kept him right around 50 pitches,” Reiter said. “He threw 55, which is relatively few.” With the win, the Braves held on to sixth place in the District Three ClassAAA power rankings. “This keeps us right in the hunt for districts and the section,” said Reiter.

“Wins against teams we have coming up are going to be important.” The Braves fell just short in a 2-1 loss to Lancaster Catholic on Wednesday. The Crusaders’ Josh Beck escaped trouble and put five innings under his belt to earn the win. He allowed a run on three hits and five walks before giving way to the bullpen. Anthony Sivillo tossed a scoreless sixth and Luis Correa earned the save.

Cam Barto slugged a solo home run and drove in the game-winning run in the ninth inning. Yoder started and went five innings. Olonovich came on in the sixth and gave the Braves nearly four innings before Barto’s walk off hit. SOFTBALL Pequea’s softball team improved to 13-4 (12-4 league) and held on to first place in the Section Four standings with wins that included a 10-1 drubbing of Columbia on Monday, a 10-6 comeback win at Lancaster Mennonite on Tuesday and a huge 3-1 defeat of Lancaster Catholic at Paradise Park on Wednesday night. “Sarah Moore pitched a great game against Lancaster Catholic,” said head coach Doug High. “Defensively we only made one error.” The win improved the Braves’ ranking in the District Three Class-AAA power rankings to fourth. The Braves took advantage of walks for all three of their runs. Moore walked in the first inning and Hailey Yothers doubled to drive her home. In the fifth, Abbey Leslie walked and advanced to second as well as third on a pair of passed balls. “Sarah Moore squeezed her home,” said High. Camryn Bailey’s two-out walk and a pinch-hit RBI double by Josie Burns gave Moore and the Braves a 3-0 lead. “They had the bases loaded with no outs in the sixth,” he added. “They managed to score one run on a sacrifice fly.” Moore, who recorded five strikeouts and walked only one batter in the complete game four-hitter, worked out of further damage. “In the LMH game, we were down 6-0,” High noted. “It took us a long time, but we got it going.” Burns came on in relief in the bottom of the third. She went the rest of the way, allowing only one of the six runs by the Blazers. “Abbey Leslie had a hit with runners in scoring position, drove in two runs,” High said. “She scored a run and walked twice. Abbey played basketball for us,” continued the coach. “She came out after the Annville-Cleona game. In this game, her bat really came to life.” Also, leading the offense was Carol

TENNIS Pequea Valley sophomore Brady Burns finished third in the L-L League Flight One Class-AA championships this past week. After reaching the semifinals and facing Lancaster Catholic’s Brendan McNamara, the PV sophomore’s strong showing in the first set couldn’t push him into the title match. He lost 7-6 (2) and 6-2 in

the semis, which was a battle between third-seeded Burns and No. 2 seed McNamara. Burns came back to defeat Lancaster Country Day’s George Markley 6-1, 6-0 in the third-place match. Senior Devon Clemmer teamed with Burns in the Flight One doubles championship. Markley and teammate Jonah Rebert topped the topseeded pair from Pequea 6-2, 6-2 in the championship match on Monday. Burns and Clemmer had won their semifinal match 6-1, 6-2, defeating Donegal duo of Nathan McNece and Austin Hollinger.

Changing The Face Of Schreiber

R037766

The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development changed its name in October. This month, it will change the face of its building at 625 Community Way, Lancaster. The existing portico and brick pillars will be demolished, to be replaced with a brighter, taller, more open space. “We opened this building in 1981, and the entrance has served us well for a long time, but it was time for a change,” said Schreiber president James DeBord. “Even with lights, it was dark and not very welcoming. And the low portico was regularly being struck by vehicles, which was a hazard. The new entrance will be a significant improvement to the building and create a more welcoming space for our children, their families, and visitors.” The work is being funded entirely through private donations. No money from general operations will be used. Lititz-based Simeral Construction will lead the project, and work was set to begin on May 6. The first phase of construction is estimated to be completed in four to six weeks. During the first phase, clients coming for services and other visitors will enter Schreiber through a side entrance that was previously used primarily by therapy staff members. Families and visitors will be directed to park on the west side of the Schreiber building, that is, the lot closest to Good Drive. Staff members will park in the building’s east lot, which is located next to Homestead Village’s Bachman Center. Once the first phase is completed, the main element of the new entrance - an arched, translucent roof - will be custom-made and installed in August. The installation will take about a week and will again require use of the temporary alternate entrance during that time. Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development is a nonprofit organization that offers innovative therapy, education, and recreation resources for children, teenagers, and young adults and specializes in services for children with special needs. Schreiber also provides education services for typically developing children, including a reverse mainstream preschool and a PA Stars 4 Star day care center for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years. For more information about the Schreiber Center and the construction project, readers may visit www.schreiberpediatric.org or call 717-393-0425.

The low, dark overhang at the main entrance of the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development is being demolished in May and replaced with a brighter, higher, more welcoming facade.

Soukas related that 8,000 loukoumades were sold at last year’s bazaar, and he and his co-chair, Manny Firoglanis, are planning to sell 4,000 of the pastries at Gyrofest this year.
