Pequea Valley holds STEAM Flite

OnApril 27, Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) students held a celebration of creativity when the second annual STEAM Flight Night was observed at Pequea Valley Intermediate School (PVIS). The event was a showcase of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) that gave visitors the opportunity to experience firsthand how students learn about those subjects in Pequea Valley schools. Activities included a focus on project-based learning, hands-on stations, and a chance to visit a Makers Market filled with art, baked goods, crafts, accessories, and more. Funds raised by items sold in the market benefited the Pequea Valley Education Foundation. Visitors were able to take part in activities including an art showcase, which featured works by students from all PVSD schools and grades. A miniature golf course designed by sixth-grade students was part of the program as were inventions created by fifth-graders in the Pequea Valley STEM lab. The PVSD art team worked to create an interactive mural that grew as the night went on. Attendees could test their engineering skills and time management at a tower challenge

that offered the chance to see who could design and construct the tallest tower possible with certain materials in a given amount of time. The capabilities of a laser engraver were also demonstrated.

PVSD gifted learners devised shows in the PVIS planetarium, including comparisons of ancient Central American civilizations with photos from that area. Salisbury Elementary gifted students created and filmed a Rube Goldberg machine, and photography students showed their work on the dome ceiling. Another station focused on 3D printing with the opportunity to make a nametag, and a Legos station offered the chance to make a tower, among other creations. Coding was explored at an Ozobot station, and virtual experiences from around the world were offered. Science projects made by students in kindergarten through sixth grade were on display, and hands-on science activities related to the outdoor classroom were available.

All activities were offered with background music provided by the PVIS Brave Sounds jazz ensemble. Readers who would like to know more about the district may visit www.pequeavalley.org.

Library Friends set plant sale, chicken barbecue

The Friends of the Moores Memorial Library will hold their annual Mother’s Day plant sale and chicken barbecue on Saturday, May 13, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lions Community Park, 325 N. Bridge St., Christiana.

The plant sale will feature a large assortment of hanging baskets, premade planters and geraniums. All plants will be on display in the pavilion at the park. In the case of rain, plants will be available in the Lions Community Building at the park. No bedding plants or herbs will be sold.

Get the Jesus Advantage

Ron Buch, senior pastor with Breakout Ministries, traces the organization’s Jesus Advantage addiction recovery to the emotional healing offered by the Spiritual Boot Camp the ministry has offered since 2008. “A friend who works for Teen Challenge called it JA (Jesus Advantage). “In the recovery world, we are presenting it as JA,” said Buch. “We said, ‘Let’s do the Jesus Advantage and teach how to get free.’” Buch explained that while many people try to willfully stop addiction, JA includes a

spiritual component that can lead to transformation. JA, which opens with a meal, has been offered each Saturday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for two years now.

On Saturday, June 3, from 5 to 8 p.m., JA will hold an anniversary open house at Breakout, 2400 Anita Court, Leola. The event will feature a free meal with coffee and tea. “There will be fellowship, and we will talk about what we do,” said Buch, who added that the evening will include testimonies from people who have been positively influenced to stay free from addiction. “We will pick up all the plants on Friday, and the Lions Club allows us to store them overnight in their building,” noted Friends president Joan Esworthy. “We get there early Saturday morning to set up. We will use all the picnic tables to (display) the plants.”

She said that the hanging baskets are a big seller each year. “We will probably bring at least 20 to 30 hanging baskets,” Esworthy said. “It’s Mother’s Day weekend, and a lot of people like to give them to mom or grandmom.”

Food Drive to Stamp Out Hunger set

The Friends also operate the Read Moore Book Store, which is located in the lower level of the library. The bookstore offers new and gently used books for sale, as well as a children’s corner and a section for young adults. The bookstore will be open on May 13 from 8 a.m. to noon. More information about the bookstore is available at www.facebook.com/Read MooreBookStore.

The National Association of Letter Carriers will hold its 30th annual National Food Drive to Stamp Out Hunger on Saturday, May 13. Lancaster County letter carriers will pick up nonperishable food donations during their routes. All donations collected will be donated to local food pantries.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

Chicken barbecue meals will be available beginning at 10 a.m. The cost of a meal includes a half-chicken, a bottle of water and a bag of chips. Randy Yoder will prepare the chickens on-site.

All proceeds from the plant sale and chicken barbecue, as well as the Friends’ annual golf tournament and book sales, benefit the many activities offered by the library, including the Summer Reading Program. “Twice a year, we combine the monies from fundraisers and make (a donation) to the library,” said Esworthy. “Everything is for the library.”

Those interested in supporting the library and joining the Friends are invited to attend a meeting of the group. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at the library at 2 p.m. More information about the group is available at www.facebook.com

/FriendsOfTheMoores MemorialLibrary.

Moores Memorial Library is located at 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. The library is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 7 p.m.; and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. For more information, visit www.christianalibrary.org or www.facebook.com/Moores MemorialLibrary.

Breakout associate pastor Rob Weatherholtz, who specializes in addiction recovery and discipleship, said that JA focuses on continuing recovery from addiction. “You have to be delivered from that lifestyle and everything that has to do with it,” said Weatherholtz. “You have to understand the battlefield that you’re on.”

Weatherholtz added that while behavior modification and conflict resolution techniques are part of addiction recovery, they do not offer you a relationship with Christ that leads to transformation. “It is a faith-based approach to recovery,” he said.

“People get saved and develop an internal perspective on the meaning of life.”

Buch noted that the program’s tagline is “Get free … stay free.” “A lot of people are working on getting free,” he said. “(They ask), ‘How do I get out of this loop?’ But we are working on once you do get freedom, how do you stay free? We focus on that relationship with God, others, and accountability.”

Baseball tops Columbia, A-C; Now 11-6 Overall

Pequea Valley’s baseball team received a boost thanks to the stellar pitching of Myles Furlong, Stephen Smucker, and Logan Zynn.

The Braves downed Columbia 3-1 in a Lancaster-Lebanon League home game on Friday, April 27 with Smucker going six strong dominant innings and Zynn coming on for the save - a 1-2-3 seventh inning

that included two strikeouts.

Furlong pitched a complete game on Wednesday, May 3, in another Section Four victory - a 4-1 defeat of AnnvilleCleona.

In both starts, the pitchers helped their own cause, as the saying goes. Smucker, who struck out 13 Crimson Tide batters and allowed only one base hit, stroked a two-run single to make a big difference for Pequea. The only Crimson Tide base hit was a Loudon Rupp RBI single.

Elijah Smucker went 2-for-3 with the other Pequea RBI. Peyton Temple was 1-for-2 with a stolen base and a run scored. Nick Ammon and sophomore Trevor Vollmer also stole one base each.

In Wednesday’s game against visiting AnnvilleCleona, Furlong struck out seven and only issued one free pass to a Dutchman batter. At the plate, Furlong went 2-for2 with two runs batted in. Temple also drove in a run as he went 2-for-3. Senior Kenny Merrara Sanchez came through with a sacrifice fly RBI.

The Braves improved to 116 on the year (8-4 league).

TENNIS

The L-L League Flight Championships took place from April 27 through May 1

with some matches being held at the Hempfield Rec Center, due to rain in the forecast, as well as on the courts at McCaskey and Conestoga Valley.

The Pequea pair of Cole McEvoy and Hayden Whiney played through to the semifinals of Flight Two doubles. They won 8-4 in their first match, following it up with an 8-3 victory before finally being stopped in the semis by Cedar Crest’s Glover and Sheffield, the eventual champs.

In Flight Three doubles, the Braves were represented by Joel Peifer and Bailey Scott. They outlasted the competition in a tough 9-7 victory only to lose to the Hempfield duo of Tristan Coyne and Ryan Malesic, 8-5.

At the Flight One doubles

for Class 2A, Wade Stoltzfus and Cole Stoltzfus went 1-1 on the day, winning 6-2, 6-0 before dropping a 6-1, 6-0 result against Lancaster Country Day’s Georgelis and Weigle.

Whiney had an 8-2 victory over Octorara’s Daniel Keane in the first round of the Flight Two singles. He lost to the eventual runner up, Hempfield’s Eric Jordan, by an 8-2 score in the second round.

Cole Stoltzfus fell to Carson Weigle of Lancaster Country Day in the first match of the Class 2A Flight One singles. In the consolation matches, Stoltzfus won 6-0, 6-2 over Octorara’s Declan Lomboy. In the fifth-place match, however, he again ran into Weigle, who narrowly won 2-6, 7-6 (2) and 6-1.

Golf outing will benefit Good Samaritan Services

The 16th annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing will be held on Friday, June 9, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times will be at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and members of the public may sign up to play in teams of up to four players. All proceeds will benefit Good Samaritan Services (GSS).

GSS is a nonprofit organization that seeks to assist those experiencing homelessness in Lancaster and Chester counties. First operating under the name Good Sam Shelter, GSS was created in 1999, and it has continued to grow in the years since. The organization currently has five locations, which are located in Lancaster city, Ephrata, Coatesville, Phoenixville and Kennett Square. “We’re really grateful to EPC for partnering with us for so long. It’s a fun way for people to get involved,” said Rachel Shelley, marketing and communications specialist for GSS. “Fundraisers like these make our growth possible and have allowed us to assist more people than ever before.” In the past year, GSS has served more than 600 people in the local area. For

more information, visit www.goodsamservices.org.

A prize drawing will occur at the end of the golf outing on June 9, featuring items that have been donated by local businesses. Prizes in the drawing will include items such as tickets to Longwood Gardens, an adventure package from Refreshing Mountain Retreat & Adventure Center, handmade wooden items, golf equipment and gift cards. The prize drawing will be open to players in the morning session and evening session; if a player’s name is drawn after he or she has left, the player will be contacted to receive the prize. This year, many local businesses have donated items for the prize

drawing for the first time.

“It’s really neat to have fresh people involved and helping the mission,” said Rachel Stebbins, EPC’s marketing director. “People in Lancaster are very generous and are more than happy to support the cause.”

Food will be included in the cost of admission for the event. Peters’ BBQ will provide meals for lunch and dinner; breakfast from Joe on the Go Coffee Co. will be offered in the morning; and boxed lunches will be provided by Trio Bar and Grill. Drinks such as water and iced tea will be offered throughout the day from a beverage cart.

The funds raised from the EPC Golf Outing will support

a variety of projects and initiatives that GSS has begun implementing this year. The Kennett Square facility was opened in December 2022, and the organization plans to break ground for a new office building in Ephrata this summer. The addition of the Ephrata offices will allow caseworkers to give their clients more privacy while assisting them; previously, staff members needed to share offices due to space limitations. GSS has also started to offer free, in-house counseling services to its clients. By removing barriers such as cost and transportation, GSS hopes to give accessible support to clients who are experiencing trauma.

The show also dives into other worlds in segments such as “Masquerade Ball” and “Secret Agent.”

“Jukebox Jive” is a new music variety show that celebrates jukebox hits of the ’50s through the ’80s. The show features vocal performances, variety acts, comedy, magic and new technical elements.

For the holidays, the the-

ater will present “Winter Wonderland,” a magic show, and “Holly Jolly Jukebox,” a music show, in November and December.

Think of the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy, and you might think of a long line of trucks traveling down the roads of Lancaster County. That is certainly central to the event, said Terry Finch, event chairperson, but that is just part of a special day.

“Our event is anchored by the Convoy trucks and our extremely generous truck drivers, but it is so much more,” Finch shared about the event that kicks off at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. “It’s a community celebration of our Wish Children, and we hope everyone

who joins us can take part in the games and fun that happens inside the Auto Auction lanes.”

This year’s Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will take place on Sunday, May 14, at the Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim. Beginning at 9 a.m., a Family Carnival will feature food trucks, carnival games, music, mascots and Make-AWish merchandise sales. Across Auction Road from the main building and truck lot, there will be a chicken dinner available for drive-through pickup, Finch noted. “There is also an online auction running the entire week before the Convoy and ending at midnight the next day, featuring Wish Kid art, jewelry, golf foursomes, gift cards and much more,” she shared.

The Make-A-Wish event brings independent drivers and trucking companies from all over the Susquehanna Valley as well as from across the country to participate in the festivities that raise funds needed to grant 75% of the annual wishes in the Susquehanna Valley. Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley grants wishes for children with critical illnesses. Over the years, the Convoy has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars. “In recent years, our record fundraising was just over $600,000,” Finch noted. “Our goal for this year is $700,000.” She said organizers are hoping for 400 trucks to participate in the Convoy this year.

Drivers put their hands on the Wish Angel trailer before last year’s Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy.

“Our drivers fundraise all year long,” she explained, “and the top fundraisers in dollars earned make up the top 30 drivers in the Convoy. They are the front row of trucks and will lead out the event as they travel along the Convoy route.”

The top driver will pull the Wish Angel trailer, which is a tribute to Wish Children in the chapter area who have passed away in the 34 years since the Convoy began. “Each year, we add names to stars on the trailer before it goes on the route,” Finch remarked. “During our 12 p.m. announcements at the stage, we also ask the top 30 drivers to put their hands on the trailer and have a moment of silence for our Wish Angels.”

When the Convoy heads out, Wish Children are invited to ride along with the drivers, said Finch, noting that up to 100 of them have joined drivers in the past.

The route will run from Manheim to Elizabethtown and Mount Joy, and Finch encourages people to watch the Convoy along the route and cheer on the Wish Children. She recommends viewing the Convoy at LCBC on Route 772 in Manheim, where there will be food trucks and special visitors, and anywhere along Main Street in Mount Joy.
