Pastors who began meeting virtually during COVID-19 gathered in person at Maple Grove Mennonite Church in April.

sked what brings him to a monthly meeting of area pastors, Scott Feather, pastor of Gateway Church, Parkesburg, replied, “It’s the laughter. For me, that’s big. There’s an exhaling that takes place (with this group).” Audrey Kanagy, pastor of Ridgeview Mennonite Church, echoed Feather’s sentiments regarding his comfort level with the group. “It is more about camaraderie than comparison and competition,” she said. Other members of the group, which meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 11:30 a.m., waxed more philosophical. Adam Nagle, executive director of The Factory Ministries, noted that the organization defines poverty as a lack of resources, with one of those being spiritual. “As

only five or six pastors, and now we are at 10 to 12,” reported Rogers. During the virtual meetings, the group members discussed a variety of subjects related to COVID-19 restrictions and concerns, such as masking, small group meetings, and the response of church leaders and members to that season of constant change. Because the meetings were conducted virtually, attendance was not limited to a specific area. In January of 2021, the group began writing the devotional “Trust Me,” which is based on the promises of God found throughout the Bible. The devotional was made available in both booklet and virtual formats. In the spring of 2021, the pastors began gathering monthly at each other’s churches. “We asked if there was value to in-person gathering, and we felt there was because we had developed a

friendship and a camaraderie,” said Rogers, who recalled that group members toured each other’s facilities and enjoyed lunch and conversation. A recent meeting at Maple Grove Mennonite Church in Atglen featured soup, salad, quiche, and cookies prepared by pastor Mike Clemmer. “We’ve asked, ‘What does it mean to be the churches together?’” said Rogers. “We look at some professional questions and bigger collaborative questions.” In addition to Gateway, Grace Point, Ridgeview, and Maple Grove, churches taking part in the gatherings include Hershey Mennonite, Branch Community, Pequea Baptist, Keystone, and Calvary Monument Bible. we collaborate to connect people to resources, it’s important for The Factory to stay engaged with spiritual resources in the community, which are represented by this group,” said Nagle. The gathering, which currently includes pastors from churches as far east as Coatesville and west as Paradise, has roots in the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions it brought about. Tim Rogers, pastor of Grace Point Church of Paradise, recalled that by late 2020, pastors were struggling with the ramifications of government requirements. “We were all in a situation we had never been in, and we didn’t know what to do,” said Rogers. “There were unique challenges churches faced.” Instead of sitting alone in their offices, the pastors began calling each other, which led to a twice-monthly virtual conference call. “At first it was

Sit, Stay: Selecting An Easier-To-Train Dog Training is one of the most important ways to keep companion animals safe. When prospective pet owners begin looking for a new dog, one of the first thoughts that may come to mind is trainability and whether certain breeds are more easy to train than others. The pet food manufacturers at Honest Kitchen indicated that breed is just one of many

factors that can make a difference in how easily a dog will be trained. For example, dogs that are food-motivated and enjoy being around people may be more easily trained than those without such traits. How the animal was bred, raised and socialized can also play a part. The American Kennel Club reported that certain dogs are more willing

well-socialized German shepherd to avoid anxiety and wariness of people. - Poodles: Poodles are popular because they do not shed much, but also because they are intelligent, obedient and versatile. - Golden retrievers: Golden retrievers are not known as a family dog for nothing. Goldens are very intelligent and amiable, and they often will go to great lengths to please their owners. Labrador retrievers also take to training well and are very affectionate. - Papillon: Smaller dogs are often viewed as stubborn or independent. However, papillons are incredibly smart and trainable and are naturally focused. The pet advisement site K9 of Mine warned that some of the smartest, most trainable dogs may not necessarily be the easiest to live with. They can get bored easily and destroy things around the house if they cannot keep their minds occupied. This is a factor to consider when selecting a breed as well.

to comply with owner requests, while others are bred to work independently and may be less likely to immediately respond to commands from their owners. Though there is no guarantee any dog will take to training, the following are some breeds that are generally considered training-friendly. - Border collies: Collies are bright and energetic dogs that like to herd with their agility and intelligence. - Australian shepherd: Another herding dog, Aussies have a natural focus on their owners and are bred to work with those owners in challenging environments. - Doberman pinschers: Dobermans are smart and attentive to their owners. They have traditionally been employed as guard dogs and require careful training and socialization to be tolerant of strangers. - German shepherds: These workhorses serve many different roles because of their affinity for learning tasks. Meet Ben! This 6-month-old boy is available for adoption from the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center after finding himself at the shelter again. Ben takes some time to warm up to new people, but once he does, he is incredibly loving; his favorite activity is headbutting and begging for scratches. He might be a little spicy at times, but he enjoys the finer things in life, like sunbathing, batting around toys, and harassing his people! If interested in adopting Ben, call the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center at 717-917-6979 or email lancaster@pspca.org.

creativity to the art. She loved her annual family trip to Bethany Beach and the opportunity it gave her to spend a week with her family. She liked to walk and hike trails, and fall was her favorite season. Being a Penn State alumna, she shared her husband’s passion for Penn State football and enjoyed yearly trips to the games. Above all else, Marty was devoted to her family. She and Jan were rarely apart as they supported each other, loved each other, and accomplished the daily tasks of life. She especially loved the time spent with her two daughters and their families. Her three grandchildren, London, Emerson, and Myles, brought her great joy and a strong sense of pride. To them, she was known as Mimi, and they loved each other dearly. Marty is survived by her husband, Jan V. Wilcox; daughter Jenny, wife of Orlando Archuleta; daughter Emily Wilcox and her partner, John Joseph “Joe” Plesic; grandchildren London, Emerson, and Myles Archuleta; brother Bruce E. Pohlman, husband of Beverly; brotherin-law Jared S. Wilcox, husband of Rebecca; sister-in-law Leigh Ann Leary, wife of Neil; and seven nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly. A celebration of her life was held at 2 p.m. on May 4 at the Miller-Finkenbinder Funeral Home & Crematory, Elizabethtown, with pastor Don Clark officiating. Visitation with the family was held before the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to ECHOS, 105 E. Marcia “Marty” (Pohlman) Wilcox, age 68, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on April 27, at Hershey Medical Center. Born on September 19, 1953, in Hanover, she was the daughter of the late Gerald J. Pohlman and Agnes M. Horwedel Pohlman. She was married for 47 years to her beloved husband, Jan V. Wilcox. She was born and raised on her family’s farm in New Oxford, where she developed her work ethic and a love for the outdoors. After graduating from Delone Catholic High School in 1971, she attended The Pennsylvania State University, where she and Jan met and where she earned her B.A. in art in 1975. On Nov. 8, 1975, she and Jan were married at Sacred Heart Basilica in Hanover. Soon after, Marty began working at Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., where she enjoyed a successful career of over 40 years, serving as manager of specialty publications. God blessed Marty with the gifts of creativity, compassion, and a strong work ethic. She brought those gifts to her career and to her friends and family through her ideas, the beautiful gifts that she created, and the encouragement that she gave to others. Upon retirement in 2018, Marty was free to enjoy her love of reading, further pursue her passions for painting and knitting, care for her mother, and enjoy time with her family. Her hands were always busy, and she achieved an incredible level of skill at knitting by reading books, joining online interest groups, and simply knitting beautiful gifts for friends and family. For years, Marty quietly kept a personal journal of life events and inspiring quotes and Scripture. She was a great cook and brought her

Coming off a 6-1 loss at Annville-Cleona the previous week, the Braves took the field against Lancaster Mennonite on Monday, May 2. “It was our senior night, so it was a nice win for our seniors,” said Langley. Jaden Estevez, Dylan Knott, and winning pitcher Gavin Eby each did their part in contributing to the 91 victory. “Gavin Eby threw the whole game,” Langley noted. “He had a shutout until the last inning. But they led off with a triple. They had a one out walk and tried to steal second. We threw down and they got a steal at home.” The unconventional base running strategy avoided the shutout. Eby finished with 13 strikeouts. “I think before this game, he was third in our section in strikeouts,” Langley added. “This was definitely his highest total in a game.” The Braves scored five times in the first inning, aided by another unusual strategy - that of the Blazers choosing to walk Knott with two runners on base, thus loading the sacks with nobody out. Eby and his battery mate Cristian Smucker both tripled. Estevez added a double. Aside from that, the Braves’ run production came mainly on singles and walks. As for the seniors, Langley pointed out that the pandemic literally took away the 2020 baseball season and also caused havoc with scheduling for what would have been these three players’ junior season as well. “I’ve only had the fortune of coaching them for two years - two years in unprecedented times,” he said. “They are three of the players who have been in the lineup every day since I’ve coached here,” he added. “They’ve contributed to victories or kept us close in other games.” In a Tuesday game at Lancaster Mennonite, Knott went 3-for-4 with a triple and a RBI as the Braves beat LMH 8-1. Knott also scored two runs as did Evan Smith, who went 2-for-2 with a triple and a walk. Knott not only contributed to the run production, but he also pitched a complete game, striking out 12. Myles Furlong also had two hits, adding a run and an RBI to his offensive contributions. Freshman Trevor Vollmer (1-for-1) also drove in a run.

Wednesday’s 15-2 win at Columbia, which was shortened due to the mercy rule, featured two home runs by Estevez. The left-handed batter hit his first two home runs of the year - both to right-center field. “I think they both landed at the same spot,” Langley laughed. Furlong was the starting pitcher and also went 4-for-4 at the dish. He went four innings to pick up the win. “It was his first start of the season,” Langley pointed out. “He has pitched in relief for us in some games.” In the final frame, Langley brought Smucker out from behind the plate to pitch with Estevez putting on the catching gear. The Braves improved to 5-10 on the year. “Today was our best hitting game of the year,” Langley added. “We had 13 hits.”
