Everyone Wins In Biggest Loser Competition BY ANN MEAD ASH

ave Zuilkoski, superintendent of Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD), and Erik Orndorff, superintendent of Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), are also president and vice president of the Rotary Club of Paradise, respectively. Feeling the weight of having to cancel the club’s usual fundraisers due to COVID-19 restrictions, the pair decided to look inward for motivation. “We thought it would be good to hold ourselves accountable and raise some money via ‘The Biggest Loser’ competition,” explained Orndorff. From February to the end of April, Zuilkoski and Orndorff engaged in a battle not only designed to see which superintendent could lose the most weight, but also pitting CVSD against PVSD to see which could raise the most funds for an organization of the superintendent’s choosing. Zuilkoski raised funds for Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services

D

(CVCCS), which provides a food pantry and other services for CVSD residents, and Orndorff chose The Factory Ministries, which provides similar services for PVSD residents. The competition invited potential donors to give a chosen amount per pound, make a one-time donation, or donate food to either CVCCS or The Factory. E-mail blasts and other methods of communication were used to provide weekly weigh-in updates to donors. “We kicked off on Feb. 8 (with the) first weigh-in,” recalled Orndorff, who noted that both he and Zuilkoski submitted photos of their scales until the last weigh-in, which was held in person. Each man set a goal of losing 20 pounds. “We were pretty close (in weight) when we started,” recalled Zuilkoski, who planned to work extra hard to lose during the last few weeks. He noted that being more aware of what he eats and walking regularly, along with an elliptical routine and light weight training, were helping him to lose. Orndorff, who has participated in

group bicycling efforts in the past, said that he has been avoiding eating carbohydrates and has been working out on a treadmill in the Pequea Valley High School fitness center. When April 30 arrived, Orndorff had lost 22 pounds, and Zuilkoski had lost 17. As the loser, Zuilkoski had to wear PVSD spirit wear while walking through schools in his own district. Orndorff was able to donate approximately $3,000 to The Factory Ministries, and Zuilkoski donated about the same amount in funds to CVCCS. In addition to the funds, food was donated. Efforts included Fritz Elementary School’s cereal drive, which had a goal of collecting 400 boxes of cereal, and making a domino line with the cereal boxes in the hallway prior to taking them to CVCCS. “They ended up with 1,027 boxes,” said Zuilkoski. “It probably took three or four minutes for all the boxes to fall.” Approximately 500 other food items were also donated to CVCCS as part of the competition.

Hand-In-Hand Mud Sale To Return Lancaster County Carriage And Antique Auction Scheduled BY ANN MEAD ASH

“Our club is a neat thing,” said Lori Stahl of the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society. “We have been around since the mid-1800s.” Stahl noted that at one time the organization changed its name to the Lancaster Honey Producers, but in the early 2000s, it was restored to the original name. “It has always been about beekeepers mentoring new beekeepers and being advocates for the honeybees,” she explained. See Friend To Bees pg 8

Jake King and Amy Wissing, two of the organizers of the Hand-in-Hand Fire Company mud sale, are grateful for the volunteers who take part. “The community support behind this thing …” said King. “It’s astounding,” Wissing finished for him. “There are so many people involved who

are not firefighters and don’t have family members who are firefighters.” The mud sale, an outdoor annual consignment auction that was not held in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, will take place this year on Thursday, June 24, and Friday, June 25, and will feature five auction blocks. In addition to carriages, antiques, collectibles, See Mud Sale pg 6

The last Lancaster County Carriage and Antique Auction (also known as the Hand-in-Hand mud sale), which benefits the Hand-in-Hand Fire Company, was held in 2019. This year’s outdoor fundraiser is scheduled for June 24 and 25 in Bird-in-Hand.

Harbaugh said that all the playground equipment has been moved from the previous location and that the Upper Leacock Fire Company donated time, energy, and trucks to bring nine tons of mulch to the new playground. Harbaugh noted that the new location within the walls of Zion is fitting with the church’s reputation for being involved in multiple projects that benefit the community. “The church is so community minded, when they heard we needed a home, it seemed like a good fit for everybody,” she said, adding that pastor Karen Larson is one of Steps’ biggest supporters. “Child care - how much more community minded can you get? It just makes sense.” As of the fall of 2020, Steps also offers before- and afterschool care at each Conestoga Valley School District elementary school. On April 26, Patti Corll, director of faith foundation for Zion, returned from vacation to the sounds of children giggling in the hallways. “It was so wonderful to walk into this building and hear children this morning,” Corll told Harbaugh. “It is fabulous. When God has everything in a plan, it’s just providence.” The front door of Steps to Success’ new home is on the side of the church as one pulls into the drive. The doorbell plays “Under the Sea” from “The Little Mermaid” when rung. Inside, the halls have been painted navy on the lower half and white at the top to match the foyer of the church. Servant Stage will present a staged reading of a new, original musical called “Prodigal” by composer and playwright Tyler D. Hoover. Performances will take place at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 21; 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 22; and 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 23. The show will also be available to watch online from Friday, May 28, through Sunday, June 13. The community is invited to attend and be part of the development process of this musical. A limited number of tickets for the in-person performances are available to the public. COVID-19 policies that will be in place include limiting the audience capacity to allow for social distancing and wearing face coverings at all times, per state health guidelines. Hoover is a Lancaster-based composer with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music theory and composition from West Chester University. “Prodigal” is the first full-length musical he has created. The musical is loosely based on the parable of the Prodigal Son found in Luke 15. Hoover said he was looking to find a familiar story that could be retold in an innovative way. The presentation features a cast of 23 local performers, led by Robert Bigley, Zachary Fernback, Caleb Hughes, and Reji Woods in featured roles. The presentations will also include a question-andanswer and talk-back session with Hoover, director Wally Calderon, and cast members after each performance. All performances are offered at pay-what-you-will prices, and tickets for both the in-person performances and online streaming must be reserved in advance by visiting www.servantstage.org or by calling 717-455-0255.

Mud Sale from pg 1 plant nursery items, tools, and more will be up for bids. On June 24, food will be served beginning at 3 p.m., and the auction will take place from 3:30 to 8 p.m. On June 25, the auction will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. As in the past, the auction will be located in the large field along Route 340 across from the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant. The GPS address for the location is 338 N. Ronks Road, Bird-in-Hand. Wissing shared that pizza and wings will be available on the night of June 24. King noted that the auction blocks will feature antiques and collectibles, crafts, plant nursery items, flowers, small tack, and tools, along with field rows. Wissing pointed out that field row items are often unusual or unique. “(Items) could be equipment, old windows, old furniture. There are major treasures sometimes like iron statues and anvils,” she stated, adding that old Salvation Army uniforms have been among the finds. King said the June 25 auction will begin with antiques, collectibles, and field row items. He noted that tack, other horse-related items, and plant nursery items like flowers and shrubbery will also be sold. “Scattered throughout the day will be crafts, mini horses and ponies, furniture, and carriages,” he said. Wissing noted that the furniture that goes up for bids

often includes a mix of old and new items and that often larger donated items are featured. “If people keep some items aside while they’re spring cleaning and bring them to the sale, that would be wonderful,” said Wissing. Past auctions have featured up to 150 carriages ranging from Amish buggies to pleasure carriages, including antique carriages from the 1890s. Food that will be available for purchase on June 25 will include sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, bloomin’ onions, and chicken barbecue. King noted that doughnuts and soft pretzels will be made fresh on site, along with homemade ice cream produced using hitand-miss engines. Iced tea and lemonade will also be sold. Coming off a year when fundraisers were canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, organizers are hoping that the auction will be well attended, but they are also looking forward to bringing the community together. Wissing noted that 400 volunteers help to make the sale happen. She credited King and the other managers of the event with creating a strong structure that has organized successful events for the fire company since 2009. Readers who have questions about the event may call 717-945-4945.

To help give beginning beekeepers a sweet start, the organization normally holds a one-day workshop in late January or early February. According to Stahl, past events attracted about 100 attendees, with another 100 fledgling beekeepers on a waiting list. This year’s event was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, but Stahl said that the organization hopes to hold the 2022 event. Another service the organization offers is swarm retrieval. Swarms occur when a hive divides itself. “The queen and a bunch of the bees leave,” said Stahl. “(Bees) swarm anywhere between April and October, but the bulk happens in May,” noted Stahl, displaying photos of swarms she retrieved during 2020 on her phone. “A typical traditional

The website also offers informational documents under the “Members” tab, including an article on designing a garden for pollinators. Stahl recommends that gardeners plant flowers that bloom in February, March, early April, August, September, October, and November. “When it’s the end of April, bees can find nectar and pollen everywhere,” she explained. She also encourages allowing some clover, violets, and even dandelions in the green landscape of the lawn to create pollinator islands. Stahl said that putting out water for bees can be a controversial sub-

She recommends only putting out water after several weeks of drought and then being sure to include rocks or logs for bees to keep them from drowning. “Some bees have the job of being the water collectors,” she said, noting that water can be used to cool the hive or thin honey that has crystallized for use. “A lot of people are using the venom from honeybees for medicinal purposes,” said Stahl, who noted
