ifth-grade Salisbury Elementary School teacher Anita Girvin knows the power of a seed. Working with teaching partner Diane Hemperly, Girvin has founded Girvin’s Gardeners, a club made up of 15 fifth- and sixth-grade Salisbury students who give up their lunch block every other Wednesday to learn about plants, business, and how to work together. During a recent club meeting, Girvin began by discussing the importance of cooperation, which happened to be the Salisbury character trait for April. “Cooperation … for me that’s being able to do more together than by yourself,” explained Girvin. “The reason we decided to (set the club) up as a business is so you can work together on committees. Think about how challenging (growing and selling plants) would be without this word cooperation.” Girvin then lauded the

students for the work they had done selling spring planters, which included tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths. Student Stella explained that during the sale, different committees completed specific tasks. “Some of the committees sold the plants to the school adults,” said Stella, who added that the shipping and logistics committee delivered the plants. “I am in customer service,” she added. “We make care cards (to provide customers) with care tips on the plants.” Through a connection with Ease The Burden (ETB), a local organization that partners with educators, the club received a grant, as well as supplies from Ken’s Gardens. “We help to join the two (Girvin’s Gardeners and Ken’s Gardens),” said Mindy Williams of ETB. “Our role is to line up businesses that would fit well with Pequea Valley needs,” added Lapp, who presented students in the club with T-shirts that read “Girvin’s Gardeners.”

At 66 Lancaster Ave., Ephrata, just a stone’s throw from Ephrata Hospital, is a small building that holds treasures to make the eyes of most children and many adults grow large with delight. The Seiverling Museum - Car and Pedal Car Museum holds 150 pedal cars from all over the world, plus three full-size classic cars. “This was put together by my great-uncle Richard Seiverling,” said Darren Seiverling, who, along with his family, oversees the museum and gives tours by appointment. Richard, who passed in 2006, began collecting cars - full-size cars - in the mid-1980s. “The building was built in 1991 to house his car collection,” said Darren, noting that between 1991 and 1994, the building was full of classic cars with space to work on some of them. “Around ‘95, he got the first pedal car, and he was so proud,” recalled Darren, pointing out the 1947 tan and orange Pontiac that is still in the museum. “He called us over the first day it came because he was so excited.” The first pedal car was the beginning of a trend that would last the rest of Richard’s life. “It felt like

every week, I was putting in a new pedal car,” Darren said. “They came in crates from all over the nation.” According to Darren, Richard liked the color schemes and how small and cute they were. “There’s hardly any maintenance,” he noted, adding that Richard’s love for the cars was evident as he showed them off and told the story of each car. Darren shared that most of the cars in the museum are “original restored,” meaning they were bought brand new by somebody and played with, and they went to the attic before being restored close to original condition. “The restorers in the mid-1990s picked them up and restored them and sent Richard a Polaroid (photo),” said Darren. “If he liked the Polaroid, he sent them a check.” By 1996, Richard wanted to share his enjoyment with others, so he opened the museum and began bringing in small groups for tours. Soon he was running out of room. “At that time, he had a 1927 Chevy coupe, and one day, he said, ‘I am selling the Chevy because I need more room for pedal cars,’” recalled Darren, who was 16 at the time and was shocked by the decision. “(Richard) sold the Chevy and (bought) more pedal cars.” For an adult who remembers the age of pedal cars from about the 1920s to the

1970s, it is interesting to look for cars similar to those they remember, but some rather fancy automobiles are on display as well. Referencing a 1924 Packard, Darren noted that families that could afford $50 to $100 for a child’s toy in that time period owned the cars. By the 1950s, some pedal cars could be purchased for $15, and middle-class families could afford them. “I consider these the Power Wheels of that time,” said Darren. Darren, who still buys and sells pedal cars, identifies them by searching old pedal car advertisements on the internet. But cars are not the only vehicles represented in the museum. A truck that was specially made for the muse-

um, a bulldozer, and a tandem pedal car that could be pedaled by two children at the same time are also featured, along with several pedal planes and a boat on its own trailer. Currently, the museum is open only by appointment, and groups are limited. There is no admission fee, but perperson donations are appreciated. “We let everybody mosey around at their own pace,” said Darren. Bee-ing A Friend To Pollinators hopes to hold the 2022 event. Another service the organization offers is swarm retrieval. Swarms occur when a hive divides itself. “The queen and a bunch of the bees leave,” said Stahl. “(Bees) swarm anywhere between April and October, but the bulk happens in May,” noted Stahl, displaying photos of swarms she retrieved during 2020 on her phone. “A typical traditional swarm looks like a big ball of bees.” The organization’s website - www.lancaster beekeepers.org - provides a list of swarm collectors divided by location. “A swarm may sit there for 20 minutes, two hours, or two days,” said Stahl. “When you see a swarm, you want to get a beekeeper there as fast as you can.” Stahl said that beekeepers use a special bee box that smells familiar to bees with an entrance that can be made smaller and even closed to capture bees.

BY ANN MEAD ASH

“Our club is a neat thing,” said Lori Stahl of the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society. “We have been around since the mid-1800s.” Stahl noted that at one time the organization changed its name to the Lancaster Honey Producers, but in the early 2000s, it was restored to the original name. “It has always been about beekeepers mentoring new beekeepers and being advocates for the honeybees,” she explained. To help give beginning beekeepers a sweet start, the organization normally holds a oneday workshop in late January or early February. According to Stahl, past events attracted about 100 attendees, with another 100 fledgling beekeepers on a waiting list. This year’s event was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, but Stahl said that the organization

The website also offers informational documents under the “Members” tab, including an article on designing a garden for pollinators. Stahl recommends that gardeners plant flowers that bloom in February, March, early April, August, September, October, and November. “When it’s the end of April, bees can find nectar and pollen everywhere,” she explained. She also encourages allowing some clover, violets, and even dandelions in the green landscape of the lawn to create pollinator islands. Stahl said that putting out water for bees can be a controversial subject because water can be a point of disease transfer. She recommends only putting out water after several weeks of

drought and then being sure to include rocks or logs for bees to keep them from drowning. “Some bees have the job of being the water collectors,” she said, noting that water can be used to cool the hive or thin honey that has crystallized for use. “A lot of people are using the venom from honeybees for medicinal purposes,” said Stahl, who noted that treatments for arthritis and Lyme disease are being studied. She noted that if one is stung accidentally, it is wise not to grab the stinger. “Use a fingernail to flick the stinger up and away,” she said. “If you squeeze, you (are injecting) the venom into you, but by flicking you remove the whole thing.” In addition to the website, information about the society may be found by searching for “Lancaster County Beekeepers Society” on Facebook.

“It’s a neat opportunity for interested families to talk to families who are fostering,” said Brenda Long, foster care and adoption supervisor for Bethanna, an organization that has been serving the area for nearly 30 years. Because the ballgame is an informal event where there are breaks for conversation, Long believes those who are considering fostering will have opportunities to ask questions. Children living with foster families will be present at the event, and three have been invited to throw out first pitches at the game. “We hope the public can understand children in foster care may have special needs, and they come from hard places,” said Long. “They’re kids.” Chris Walter, permanency worker with Bethanna, which serves the Susquehanna Valley from 301 N. er, noted that although the organization works with 25 to 30 foster families, there is still a need for more. “There’s a particular need for parents to foster teens and even to age 21 and over to help them get established as adults,” she said, adding that foster parents are encouraged to be a resource and connection for older children to provide a home base for holidays and a place to come home to. Long noted that there’s a distinct need for parents who are open to both fostering and adopting and who realize a child may be reunited with his or her parents. She added that when foster homes are not

available, referrals from the county may have to be turned away. “While the 25 referrals per month we turn away due to lack of … foster homes also go to other agencies, when none of us have homes, children end up in youth shelter, while the home search continues,” she said, noting that this is happening more often than it used to. “As foster families adopt, they often (stop fostering), and so we constantly need more families,” she shared. The event is free to attend, but reservations are required. Interested families may call 717-299-1926, ext. 512, or email blong@bethanna.org to register.

Inspiration To Be Found At Power Camp BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Kids, get ready for “a week of inspiration and perspiration.” That’s how the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) describes Power Camp, a coed four-day sports camp for children ages 8 to 12. The Lancaster FCA will host Power Camp at two locations this summer. From Monday, June 14, through Thursday, June 17, camp will be held at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland. Sport choices at the New Holland camp are basketball, field hockey, soccer, baseball or lacrosse. Camp will also be held from Monday, June 21, through Thursday, June 24, at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road. Sport choices in Manheim are basketball, volleyball, soccer or baseball. Each camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and lunch will be provided. “It’s a great camp for kids to try a sport for the first time, under the supervision of quality coaches,” said Diana Roth, area representative for FCA. “You don’t have to be the best athlete or be super competi-

tive. It’s just a way to try a sport and have fun.” This is the third year the camp will be offered in New Holland and the first year for the camp in Manheim. “Our goal is to eventually have four Power Camps at different regions in the county,” Roth noted. Christianity is the focus of the camp, which includes worship time as well as devotions. This year’s camp theme is ‘Pursue,’ which comes from 1 Timothy and encourages fleeing from evil to pursue a godly lifestyle.

“It’s a fun-filled camp,” Roth remarked, adding that whole-group friendly competitions in things like Minute to Win It games and Dance Dance Revolution are featured, along with guest speakers. The camp also has an outreach component. “We ask the girls and boys to bring in coins, and it’s a competition to see who can bring in the most to raise money for our partnerships in Southeast Asia,” she explained. Founded in 1954, FCA has a goal of seeing the world trans-

formed by Christ through the work of coaches and athletes. In the four years since FCA came to Lancaster County, the group has created huddles led by students at schools throughout the region, including Garden Spot, Pequea Valley, Penn Manor and Manheim Central.

“I’ve seen at Pequea Valley the growth that occurs because the huddles are student-led, versus me coming in as an adult,” said Adam Burns, area representative for FCA. “It’s inspiring watching them encourage and equip their fellow students.” Burns said one of the best things about Power Camp has been the lasting impact it’s had on campers. “Many of the campers from our first camp have now become huddle leaders,” he stated. “I’ve had campers who, as soon as camp ends, say, ‘We can’t wait to sign up for next year.’” For more information on Power Camp or to register, visit https://lancaster fca.org/camp-2.

Dave Zuilkoski, superintendent of Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD), and Erik Orndorff, superintendent of Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), are also president and vice president of the Rotary Club of Paradise, respectively. Feeling the weight of having to cancel the club’s usual fundraisers due to COVID-19 restrictions, the pair decided to look inward for motivation. “We thought it would be good to hold ourselves accountable and raise some money via ‘The Biggest Loser’ competition,” explained Orndorff. From February to the end of April, Zuilkoski and Orndorff engaged in a battle not only designed to see which superintendent could lose the most weight, but also pitting CVSD against PVSD to see which could raise the most funds for an organization of the superintendent’s choosing. Zuilkoski raised funds for Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), which provides a food pantry and other services for CVSD residents, and Orndorff chose The Factory Ministries, which

provides similar services for PVSD residents. The competition invited potential donors to give a chosen amount per pound, make a one-time donation, or donate food to either CVCCS or The Factory. E-mail blasts and other methods of communication were used to provide weekly weigh-in updates to donors. “We kicked off on Feb. 8 (with the) first weighin,” recalled Orndorff, who noted that both he and Zuilkoski submitted photos of their scales until the last weigh-in, which was held in person. Each man set a goal of losing 20 pounds. “We were pretty close (in weight) when we started,” recalled Zuilkoski, who planned to work extra hard to lose during the last few weeks. He noted that being more aware of what he eats and walking regularly, along with an elliptical routine and light weight training, were helping him to lose. Orndorff, who has participated in group bicycling efforts in the past, said that he has been avoiding eating carbohydrates and has been working out on a treadmill in the Pequea Valley High School fitness center. When April 30 arrived, Orndorff had lost 22 pounds, and Zuilkoski had lost 17. As the loser, Zuilkoski had to wear PVSD spirit wear while walking through schools in his own district. Orndorff was able to donate approximately $3,000 to The Factory Ministries, and Zuilkoski donated about the same amount in funds to CVCCS.

Dave Zuilkoski (left), superintendent of Conestoga Valley School District, and Erik Orndorff, superintendent of Pequea Valley School District challenged each other to a weight loss battle.

In addition to the funds, food was donated. Efforts included Fritz Elementary School’s cereal drive, which had a goal of collecting 400 boxes of cereal, and making a domino line with the cereal boxes in the hallway prior to taking them to CVCCS. “They ended up with 1,027 boxes,” said Zuilkoski. “It probably took three or four minutes for all the boxes to fall.” Approximately 500 other food items were also donated to CVCCS as part of the competition. Both superintendents have

decided to encourage healthy habits for their district staff members. “For our faculty, we have made it part of our healthy awareness program to lose weight,” said Zuilkoski. “If you sign up to lose weight, you get points toward our wellness program.” Orndorff is hoping to repeat the fundraiser in the future. “Next year, we might find a more formalized way of doing it with a percentage of weight loss for 20 people from PVSD and 20 people from CVSD, so it’s not only (the two of) us.”

Servant Stage will present a staged reading of a new, original musical called “Prodigal” by composer and playwright Tyler D. Hoover. Performances will take place at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 21; 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 22; and 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 23. The show will also be available to watch online from Friday, May 28, through Sunday, June 13. The community is invited to attend and be part of the development process of this musical. A limited number of tickets for the in-person performances are available to the public. COVID-19 policies that will be in place include limiting the audience capacity to allow for social distancing and wearing face coverings at all times, per state health guidelines. Hoover is a Lancaster-based composer with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music theory and composition from West Chester University. “Prodigal” is the first full-length musical he has created. The musical is loosely based on the parable of the Prodigal Son found in Luke 15. Hoover said he was looking to find a familiar story that could be retold in an innovative way.

PUBLIC AUCTION (2) COMMERCIAL USE PROPERTIES

The presentation features a cast of 23 local performers, led by Robert Bigley, Zachary Fernback, Caleb Hughes, and Reji Woods in featured roles. The presentations will also include a question-and-answer and talk-back session with Hoover, director Wally Calderon, and cast members after each performance. All performances are offered at pay-what-you-will prices, and tickets for both the in-person performances and online streaming must be reserved in advance by visiting www.servantstage.org or by calling 717-455-0255.
