Operating a business is a strenuous venture in the best of circumstances, and with the current economic climate, local entrepreneurs are being strained and stretched even more. But that hasn’t stopped some tenacious Lancaster County residents from pushing forward with new or expanding businesses. LaundrE-town on Market in Elizabethtown is one such emerging endeavor. After over a year of renovation and progress, the fully renovated, modern laundromat was slated for an April 1 grand opening, but state mandates and closures postponed the final stages of completion. The essential business eventually opened successfully on May 1.

Kaden Stetler of Rebel Cause stands with a truckload of food that he and his crew of volunteers then turned into meals for Lancaster’s homeless population. Rebel Cause is made up of “Star Wars” fans with a mission to aid the homeless.

Aaron’s Acres Finds Permanent Home In Manheim

Aaron’s Acres hopes to have a new home at the Hoffer Farm property located adjacent to Pleasant View Retirement Community on North Penryn Road in Manheim. Pleasant View plans to build a cultural center on the property with the goal to complete it by 2022. By Ann Mead Ash

In 2018, Aaron’s Acres celebrated 20 years of providing socialization and recreation for children and young adults ages 5 to 21 with special needs. The nonprofit

organization held camp at the Jewish Community Center in Lancaster until 2013. Starting in 2014, the program was hosted by the Manheim Community Pool and Memorial Park. In 2019, the six-week camp served 220 campers. See Aaron’s Acres pg 5

Partnership Provides Mental Health Information By Ann Mead Ash

The Samaritan Counseling Center’s TeenHope website page presents some sobering statistics about youths in Lancaster County. Nearly 30% of teenagers say they feel sad or depressed most days. Almost 16% have seriously considered attempting suicide, and more than 9% of students have attempted suicide. Gretchen Gaudioso, client and

family advocate with Mental Health America Lancaster County (MHALC), has been visiting schools for some time, working to educate students about See Partnership pg 2

Here are a few ways to say thank you:

Kaden Stetler of Lancaster, one of the founders of Rebel Cause, an organization that began feeding homeless people in Lancaster on March 19, credits “Star Wars” with the inspiration behind the group’s mission. “‘Star Wars’ has always been my inner mythology,” explained Stetler. “It’s about helping others and hope and inspiring other people to do the right thing.” Rebel Cause, a group made up of about 15 members living in the Lancaster area and beyond, was founded in 2015 with a dedication to uniting “Star Wars” fans and doing good in the community. The Rebel Cause mission statement reads in part, “We are committed to helping the homeless in Lancaster

County with dignity and compassion.” Until recently, Rebel Cause aided local members of the homeless community with regular events. “We sponsored community meals on the weekends and held fundraisers for needs of the homeless community,” said Stetler. “We would use whatever space was available to us, including churches and community centers.” When Gov. Tom Wolf announced that all non-essential businesses would be closed, Stetler found himself out of work. “I knew Rebel Cause was in a position to do something (for the homeless),” said Stetler. “We started the very next day making food and handing it out to the homeless, and through that I became officially connected with the city to use one area to serve meals.”

mental health issues. TeenHope addresses mental health issues by offering screening programs for depression, anxiety, and suicide risk to area middle and high school students. Since the beginning of the fall 2019 semester, MHALC and TeenHope have been working together to provide students with education regarding anxiety, depression, and suicide prior to the screenings. “ When I learned of (MHALC’s) existing program, it seemed to be a perfect fit,” said Kim Moore, director of TeenHope. That realization led to a pilot program at a couple of Lancaster County high schools, where Gaudioso has spoken to students who were participating in screenings. Gaudioso educates teenagers about mental health treatments, which include therapy, medication if needed, having supportive people around, and educating oneself about symptoms. She also talks about the steps involved in getting help and the different types of therapists available, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, or licensed social workers, and she talks about what students can expect during the screening. Part of Gaudioso’s presentation is to encourage students to be honest during the screening. “I tell them they need to be honest and true to themselves because it will only help them,” she said, adding that she goes over the signs of depression and anxiety in detail with students and asks them to take a serious look at their own behavior. She asks them to look at things they once participated in that they are no longer doing, such as communicating with friends, completing schoolwork, playing a sport, or spending time with family. Kim McDevitt, executive director of MHALC, noted that the organization is trying to be proactive in facing the increased rate of anxiety and depression in teenagers. “We are working diligently to remove the barriers that prevent one from getting the help they need,” said McDevitt. “Mental health disorders can affect school performance, harm relationships, and lead to suicide, (so) we have increased our efforts in educating students on the importance of mental wellness, how to identify what a mental health challenge is, and how they can receive support for themselves and others.” When Gaudioso speaks to students, she tries to allay anxiety and fear about participating in a mental health screening. “(I tell them this is) just like getting your height, weight, and vision checked (at school),” she said. “You get your mental health checked.” Gaudioso explained that the screenings are done by licensed professionals, and students are referred to other mental health specialists depending on the test results. Rebel Cause volunteers hand out dinners each evening of the week, including weekends, at 6:30 p.m. from the sidewalk on the Beaver Street side of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, which is located at 119 S. Prince St., Lancaster. Food for the meals is donated by a large number of area contributors. The dinners are cooked at Rumplebrewskin’s, located at 834 N. Plum St. in Lancaster, a restaurant that has been closed by the COVID-19 restrictions. According to Stetler, about five volunteers arrive at the restaurant daily around 2 p.m. to start cooking. “ We package meals at 5:30 and head to St. Mary’s around 6 p.m.,” reported Stetler. Since the group members began providing meals, they have given out an average of 700 to 1,000 meals weekly. In addition to handing out meals, Rebel Cause has opened a day center at Crossroads Mennonite Church at 401 Church St., Lancaster. The day center is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. The center offers coffee, snacks, movies, books, art classes and art therapy, yoga classes, and live music. “We have a 20-person limit, and we are close to full each day,” Stetler said. Stetler noted that about 20 volunteers per day take part in the efforts to hand out meals and run the day center. To promote safety and comply with Pennsylvania COVID-19 recommendations, volunteers wear masks reminiscent of “Star Wars” characters and also hand

Aaron’s Acres from pg 1 For the past several years, Aaron’s Acres has been searching for a permanent home. Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, had looked at a number of county locations, but nothing suitable had been found. “We really wanted to be part of an inclusive community,” recalled Paskoff. “ We didn’t want … an entire building to ourselves.” In the past year, Paskoff began talking to Jonathan Hollinger, executive director of Pleasant View Retirement Community, 544 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. The retirement community plans to build a cultural center on the Hoffer Farm property across from the memory care and skilled nursing care facilities on North Penryn Road. Pleasant View has invited the Manheim Borough Library to be part of the center, and Paskoff reported that Aaron’s Acres has been invited as well. “Pleasant View will build a building, and we will have a condo relationship,” said Paskoff, who noted that Aaron’s Acres hopes to utilize up to 7,000 square feet in the building. Paskoff noted that other plans

for the cultural center include housing therapeutic alpacas in a barn area, along with sheep, goats, and chickens. Pleasant View also plans to expand a hydroponics program on the site. The farm property where Aaron’s Acres will be located offers additional possibilities to the organization. “We will have farm land to grow herbs, vegetables, and flowers,” said Paskoff, who sees the move as an opportunity to expand the Aaron’s Acres Plus program, which began providing activities for 22- to 30-year-olds in early 2019. “Aaron’s Acres has been for ages 5 to 21, but we are going to go to age 30,” said Paskoff. “We want to have meaningful programs (for individuals in that age group),” she noted, adding that farming, and working with animals, will be options along with taking part in Aaron’s Acres Acts of Kindness Program (Triple AOK), which allows participants with developmental disabilities to give back to others rather than just being recipients of services. “(Our clients) will be able to go into the (retirement) community and play games and have a snack with residents,” said

Paskoff, who noted that clients could also volunteer at the library. Paskoff also hopes Aaron’s Acres can open a café to be manned by its participants. In addition to the benefits offered to Aaron’s Acres, Paskoff is excited about the purpose of the cultural center, noting that Hollinger hopes to bring other nonprofit organizations to the campus. “(It will be) a lot of different organizations coming together to create a strong community with people of all abilities and ages,” said Paskoff. “It’s a dream come true.” Paskoff said that if the way is clear, the cultural center will be completed by 2022. She noted that an aquatics center is planned for completion in 2023. For Paskoff, the move to the new center will signal an important shift for Aaron’s Acres. “The first 20 years, we just grew,” said Paskoff. “Now I feel for the next 20 years, we will launch and take off in a different way.” For more information, readers may visit www.aaronsacres.org. While most businesses are seeking ways to stay afloat in spite of the pandemic, Hush Money Bikes of Lancaster is an enterprise that emerged to provide solutions in the midst of this unusual season. The cycle shop on North Prince Street in Lancaster city embraces a mission “to build community through personalized bicycle sales and service.” It was already in the planning stages in 2019, but the final impetus to make the company a reality came after the crisis struck. “The governor declared that bicycle repair was an essential service, but many local bicycle shops had already closed,” explained Ted Houser, one of three founding partners alongside Nathan Baker and Chris

“We started construction sometime around September of 2019 and faced many challenges,” explained company president Gretchen Rothstein. “Fast forward to March 20 when the stay-at-home order began, we were just about at completion.” Boasting 10 front load washers, including two extra-capacity units, 10 gas-powered dryers, complimentary Wi-Fi, a television, and change and vending machines, the startup hopes to meet a need for downtown Elizabethtown in a fresh, state-of-the-art facility. The May 1 launch served to unveil only part of what Rothstein hopes to offer in the future. Such offerings may include a “wash, dry, and fold service.”

Caldwell. “Cyclists who relied on their bicycles for transportation started calling our personal phones for assistance. At that point we realized that we were in a position to help.” The ambitious trio had already laid the groundwork and was poised to spring into action when the need arose. “We met regularly with a SCORE mentor who helped us to develop a business plan

and a budget for the shop,” Houser detailed. “We quickly adapted our plan for these uncertain times and stepped forward to support cyclists.” SCORE, a nonprofit association of business counselors with a mission to support small businesses, has approximately 80 volunteers working with clients in the Lancaster and Lebanon areas. During unprecedented closures, SCORE has played a vital See Emerging Businesses pg 11

Bailey Coach Disinfects First Responder Vehicles

Bailey Coach staff members have disinfected 500 first responder vehicles since April 7.

Bailey Coach, based in Spring Grove, celebrated and recognized its volunteers for disinfecting 500 first responder vehicles since April 7. A small ceremony was held at Bailey Coach on May 5. As part of its mission to give back to the community, Bailey Coach dedicated one of its specialized electrostatic sprayers to be used on Mondays through Fridays from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. to disinfect first responder vehicles. The process to disinfect takes two to five minutes. The staff members who have been disinfecting the vehicles are volunteers from the Bailey Coach staff

or their families. Bailey Coach plans to operate the free disinfecting to serve first responders in York, Adams and Lancaster counties as long as the disinfecting treatments are needed to keep the area’s first responders healthy due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Bailey Coach is a transportation company which diversified in mid-March when 99% of its transportation reservations had been canceled. Now employees travel to area life-sustaining businesses to provide disinfecting services. Staff members disinfect an average of 2.5 million square feet of space for 50 businesses each week, and on average, they are able to disinfect 15,000 square feet of space per hour with electrostatic sprayers. These sprayers are commonly used in airplanes, cruise ships, hospitals and meat packing facilities. Bailey Coach had been using the sprayers in its vehicles for years to keep passengers safe. Fulton Bank Issues Loans Fulton Bank N.A., a subsidiary of Fulton Financial Corporation, recently announced that, to date, through its participation in the Small Business Association’s (SBA) Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), it is issuing nearly $2 billion in SBA guaranteed loans to more than 9,400 small business, nonprofit and commercial clients. Fulton began accepting applications to the PPP in early April and reopened its application queue when Congress approved a second round of funding after the first round was depleted. In March, U.S. lawmakers passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act to provide emergency economic relief for businesses that have been negatively impacted by COVID-19. The PPP, which was established by the CARES Act, authorizes banks to provide funding for qualifying small to medium-sized businesses to be used for employee job retention and certain other expenses. Fulton Bank N.A. operates approximately 230 branches in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and Virginia. Additional information on Fulton Bank can be found at www.fultonbank.com.

procedures, including an online ordering app implemented earlier this year and a contactless pickup window. “We hope to open for online ordering and takeout in the next few weeks, Fisher said of the Lancaster city location, hinting at a new menu that will retain New Holland favorites and the company’s signature house-roasted coffee. “Our shop will have a similar design style to our New Holland location with a modern, unique twist. Uncertainty might be at an all-time high, but rising to the challenge and caring for the community is at the heart of these and countless other local businesses that are pushing forward to bring brighter days to Lancaster County.
