summer
Library plans
BY ANN MEAD ASH“This is the second (Family Fun Day and Summer Reading Kickoff),” said Catherine O’Sullivan, director of the Intercourse Library. “(The first event) was held in 2022 to kick off the library’s Summer Reading Program and offer a day for families.” The event was so successfulattracting about 200 people - it is planned again this year.
The 2023 Intercourse Library Family Fun Day and Summer Reading Kickoff will be held on Saturday, June 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the library, 31 Center St., Intercourse. The event will include games, food, and the start of the used book sale, which will be held in the Perella Schoolhouse area of the library that day and during regular library hours through Saturday, June 10. Patrons of the Salisbury Township Public Library in Gap are invited to attend.
BY ANN MEAD ASHWhenasked why they are glad they attended Pequea Valley High School (PVHS), the three seniors who were selected to speak at this year’s graduation ceremony had similar answers. “All the relationships I have made stand out for me,” said Tre Rosa, son of Rebecca and Ben Rosa of Gordonville. Tre noted that with only 96 members, the PVHS Class of 2023 is one of the
smallest in decades at a school that is smaller than many others in the county.
Kyleigh Jarvis, daughter of Kari and Jason Jarvis of Kinzers, agreed. “Connections and relationships,” she said, adding she has built amazing friendships at the school.
Karli Martin, daughter of Tanya Martin of Paradise, credited the school with fostering the chance to build friendships by offering a variety of activities. “I feel like no
matter what you’re involved in, you will find a family to have good experiences with,” she said.
All three students will address family, friends, and fellow classmates at the PVHS graduation ceremony at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, on Wednesday, May 31, at 6:30 p.m. Tre will offer opening remarks and accept diplomas on behalf of the class.
Karli, who plans to major in medical laboratory science at
HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, in the fall has not yet given her speech a title, but she will focus on perseverance and adaptability. “(It’s about) adapting to change and persevering through any hard challenges you have faced or might face in the future and doing the best you can as life goes on,” said Karli, who noted she was partly inspired by her sister, Marina, who spoke at the Class of 2021’s ceremony.
Activities scheduled for the Family Fun Day will include face painting, giant yard games such as Connect Four and an inflatable dart game with a large bullseye. Children’s librarian Christy Burke said there will be a scavenger hunt inside the library. “(Participants) will answer questions and then pick out a book to take home for free,” she said. O’Sullivan added that blank bookmarks will be available for a “design your own” craft. Cookie decorating will also be held, with one free cookie available per child.

Hot dogs will be sold for a nominal cost, and free popcorn will be available.
A fun run for children will be divided by age group. Children ages 4 to 7 will race at 9:30 and 11 a.m., and children ages 8 to 12 will race at 9:45 and 11:15 a.m. A preschool fun run for children under age 4 will be held just prior to the race for 8- to 12year-olds.
County Department of Parks and Recreation will also visit with a program.
We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.
The day will kick off the Summer Reading Program, which for 2023 has the theme “All Together Now.” Burke reported that many Intercourse-area children traditionally take part. “We usually have more than 500 (participants), and we get more than 1,000 (reading) logs back,” she pointed out, adding that the program will run from June 3 through Saturday, Aug. 12.
In addition to picking up reading logs at the kickoff, children will receive a calendar of special events that will be held at the Intercourse Library during the summer. Among the events will be visits from Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary and Talewise, an interactive story time program. “The Lancaster Science Factory will do a robotics program,” said O’Sullivan, who added that a representative of the Lancaster
According to Burke and O’Sullivan, local businesses have traditionally contributed coupons or prizes for the Summer Reading Program participants, in addition to the ones associated with the county-wide program. “It gives our branch extra coupons,” said Burke, who noted that Cherry Crest and Oola Bowls will offer discounts to Intercourse and Gap reading program participants. Along with Summer Reading Program events, family-friendly movies will be shown throughout the summer.
O’Sullivan noted that information about the events may be found at the library’s new website, https://intercourselib.org.

Spurrier earns honorable
Simeon Spurrier received an honorable mention for his essay in the annual Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) U.S. National Peace & Justice Ministries public policy essay contest. Spurrier is a 10thgrader at Lancaster Mennonite School in Lancaster. He will receive a cash prize.
In his essay, “Our Brokenness: An Essay Concerning the
American Criminal Justice System,” Spurrier describes contributing factors to the current system of mass incarceration.
In addition to changing mandatory minimum sentencing policies, Spurrier advocates for the use of restorative justice as a system that addresses underlying causes of harm and works through the trauma caused by crimes.
The MCC high school essay contest, which is in its 24th year, encourages youths to explore and understand national policy issues while reflecting on how their faith engages with advocacy. Public policy topics in this year’s contest included immigration, climate change, and mass incarceration.
Pequea Valley’s Wade Stoltzfus and Cole Stoltzfus paired up for the District
Three Class 2A doubles championships at the Hershey Racquet Club.
The doubles tournament began Friday morning, May 12 with the unseeded duo winning their first set 6-4 over Bermudian Springs’ Eli Snyder and Parker Sanders.
Snyder and Sanders came back to win the next two sets by the same margin, advancing to the quarterfinals.
“Wade and Cole were our number one doubles team,” Pequea coach Barry Christ said. “This was only their second loss of the season. It was a tight match throughout.
“The boys from Bermudian Springs went into the semifinals before bowing out,” Christ pointed out.
Given their strong season, Christ said, “This team of brothers really jelled this sea-

son. But most of all, their work ethic and personal improvement were the reasons they easily won almost all of their matches.
“This match provided them with stiff competition and will prepare them for their tennis futures as individual players,” continued the coach. “Wade graduates and Cole will return for his junior season with Pequea Valley.”
As a note to the career of Wade Stoltzfus, he and Jazae Itegi qualified for the 2022 District doubles. They battled back from a 7-5 loss in the quarterfinals’ opening set to reach the championship match, finally losing to Lancaster Catholic opponents Connor Ott and George Brubaker.
While the Stoltzfus brothers bowed out following a very tight battle, the full squad had more postseason play scheduled.
In the District Three Class 2A team tournament, the
Braves rebounded from their semifinals defeat to top Hanover 3-2 in the consolation match at home on May 10. The third-place finish in the district had earned the Braves a spot in the PIAA Class 2A state playoffs.
“The Pequea Valley team of seven played District Four champion Blue Jays of Central Columbia at Williamsport today,” Christ said. “This is the team’s second straight trip to the PIAA team tourney.”
The Blue Jays topped the Braves 3-0 at the Central PA Tennis Center in Williamsport. Joel Peifer and Cole McEvoy fell 6-1, 61 in one doubles match. Jackson Hershey and Bailey Scott lost 6-0, 6-2 while sophomore Hayden Winey fell in singles play 6-1, 6-2.
SOFTBALL
The Braves had a week of feast or famine in terms of their offense over a threegame stretch. On May 12, in an opening-round Lancaster-
Lebanon League playoff game at Hempfield, the Section Four runners-up lost to Section One champ Hempfield 10-0, managing only one base hit against the Black Knights’ Carley Ernst.
Pequea pounced on Octorara pitching in a home game on Tuesday, May 16 in a slugfest. The Braves and Braves were tied 9-9 after four innings.
“It was a fun and exciting game to watch,” said head coach Doug High. “They jumped out to four runs in the first and we answered with three.”
The Braves from Pequea scored four more in the home half of the fifth inning to take command of this game en route to their 14-11 defeat of Octorara.
“Mackenzie Musser pitched two-thirds of an inning and Sydney Roye pitched the rest,” High added.
Pequea pounded 17 hits, including three hits by Izzy
Graham. The number three hitter in the lineup went 3for-5 with three runs scored and one run batted in.
Olivia Clark also had three hits and stole two bases. She drove in one run while Sarah Arment (2-for-3, 2 steals) scored three runs.
Part of Pequea’s success could also be attributed to junior Carissa Mulder’s 4-for-5, 3 RBI game in the number nine spot of the lineup. Mulder also stole a base and came around and scored three runs. Maddy Clark had three stolen bases.
The famine returned the next day in an 11-1 loss to Brandywine Heights. It was a non-league game that was a makeup game from earlier in the season.
Graham scored the lone Pequea run as the Braves managed four hits - Graham’s double, plus singles by Mulder, Olivia Clark, and Shania Smoker.
“Brandywine Heights is playing pretty good ball right
now,” High said.
As of the end of Wednesday’s game, the Braves were sixth in the District Three Class 3A power rankings - just ahead of Lancaster Catholic. The top seven qualify for the district playoffs.
BASEBALL
The Braves were represented on the Section Four All-Star team, as voted on by the section coaches Monday, May 15. Infielders Stephen Smucker and Peyton Temple joined pitcher Myles Furlong on the first team - a squad heavily dominated by section champion Lancaster Catholic Crusaders.
Furlong batted .390 while holding down a 2.87 earned run average on the hill. Temple batted .423 while Smucker, only a sophomore, stroked a .387 batting average.
Outfielder Jayden Stoltzfus was voted to the second team with his .409 on-base percentage. Honorable mention went to Logan Zynn.

Kyleigh has titled her speech “Being Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable.”
“Inevitably as humans we are all looking at our next step,” she said, noting that this is especially true of high school seniors. “I still feel like a kid, and it’s scary to go out in the big world,” she admitted. “But you don’t want to hold back from reaching your full potential.” Kyleigh explained her speech was inspired by personal experience, having attended a private school before coming to PVHS. “I have experienced being uncomfortable and having to adjust,” she said, noting that getting involved in a number of clubs helped her to find her niche. In the fall, she plans to attend University of North Carolina at Charlotte to study sports marketing with hopes of working to promote a professional
sports team.
Tre, who is scheduled to attend Penn State Berks in the fall to study agriculture and extension education, hopes to become an agriculture teacher. He calls his speech “Cherish Every Moment.” “I will talk about everything we’ve been through in high school,” he said. “(It’s about) taking a step back from everything going on around you and looking forward into your future and back into your past and remembering where we are in this moment and everything we’ve accomplished,” he said. Tre shared that he was inspired to write the speech by seeing himself and his classmates caught up in applying for colleges and looking at the next step rather than really living in the moment during their last few months of high school.

Revealing the roots of a family tree
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDFor many people, family trees and historical records of ancestors provide a sense of connection to relatives and the journey their family has taken over decades. Despite the accessibility of information in the modern age, burial records and ancestral documents can prove to be elusive. Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will offer an Intro to Cemetery Research class to assist those searching for answers to questions posed in their family story.
The class will be held on Saturday, June 3, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and it will be taught by local historian and genealogist James Landis. Landis will begin the course at the Mennonite Life library, where he will discuss a variety of resources that researchers can use in their efforts. “A lot of people don’t realize that the county has records of destitute veterans - federal documents that may be relevant to a cemetery but are not always readily available,” Landis said. Landis will discuss how to access burial records and cover a broad spectrum of methods
Mulberry Art Studios to present exhibit
JJ Roach, who first debuted his artworks in a solo show at Mulberry Art Studios two years ago at age 17, will return to the studio in June to showcase his newest collection of art, titled “Surreal Detail.” The public is invited to meet the artist and view the artworks at a First Friday opening reception on June 2 from 5 to 9 p.m. Mulberry
Art Studios, located at 21 N. Mulberry St. in downtown Lancaster, offers free parking in a private lot.
Roach, who has been diagnosed with autism and ADHD, said that he has been able to focus and channel his emotions through art. After his first art expo at Mulberry Art Studios, he displayed his creations at Night of Entrepreneurs in Harrisburg and at Hershey Gardens in Hershey. His artworks were also on exhibit at the Pennsylvania Capitol last July. Most recently, his work “Celestial Dreams” won first place at “Art of the State,” a juried exhibition held at the State Musuem of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg.

for research. After discussion at the library, the class will visit a local cemetery, where Landis will provide a demonstration on how to photograph tombstones and the best practices for investigating a family member’s resting place. “I want this course to give people a feel for what they’re going to encounter when going to cemeteries,” Landis said. “It’s such a diverse subject; there really isn’t one single approach.”
In his class, Landis will also discuss the benefits and disadvantages of conducting research online. Although there is a plethora of websites that offer information on burial sites, Landis said they are often incomplete and do not include valuable data that one might find when exploring in person. While a website might list a family member who is buried in a specific location, it likely won’t show a connection to relatives with a different surname who are buried nearby. Landis also noted that many resources for field research were heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic; several historical societies were unable to remain open, driving genealo-
gists to rely on the internet for information.
Landis has been a genealogist for nearly 50 years, having become interested in ancestral research at a young age. At the age of 14, Landis saw a Revolutionary War re-enactment and was inspired to find information on his relatives who served in the war. His father, grandfather and great grandfather were all members of the Lancaster County Historical Society, and Landis has been involved with Mennonite Life since 1995. “In my years of research, my biggest sense of accomplishment was standing at the burial site of my ances-

Aesthetically pleasing, beauty takes on a deeper meaning when shared with others. In the natural world, there are few things recognized as more beautiful than plants, including trees and flowers.
Manheim Township resident Dennis Denenberg has a deep appreciation for the magnificent and complex
1-acre garden that surrounds his home at 410 Valley Road, Lancaster. But that appreciation blooms into pure enjoyment when visitors see it, smell it and experience it.
In fact, Denenberg has made his garden, affectionately referred to as The Gardens of Oz, available as a nonprofit venue for charitably minded organizations to host fundraisers, meetings and events free of

charge. In return for the use of the garden, Denenberg does accept donations to Diana’s Dreamers, a charity he founded at Millerville University to honor his late sister Diana DenenbergDurand, who succumbed to breast cancer in 2007.
Denenberg said that the garden has already been reserved for four events this season but that he’d like to see it used four times more.
Guided by a pair of certified horticulturists, known as the “Garden Godesses,” the tour takes about an hour to complete.
“My joy comes from seeing people enjoy the gardens,” said Denenberg. “I like to hear people laugh and ask questions. There is nothing as spectacular as nature. Even our grandest man-made monuments don’t come close. It’s fun to share it.”
“This is a ‘Wow.’ Here, you’re in the garden. You’re not just observing it. You’re at the whim of nature. Gardeners appreciate the layout, but every person wants to see colors.”
“Each season affects the garden drastically,” continued Denenberg. “My favorite time is spring. It’s spectacular. Once the first blooms come, from then on, there are colors everywhere. Then with the interaction of animals, the bees and the birds, it’s magical.”
It’s also natural beauty 28 years in the making.
When he purchased the property, Denenberg decided after an initial mowing of the lawn that he wanted his yard to be a garden. Now, a blade of grass cannot be found anywhere.

Plural, The Gardens of Oz is actually an arrangement of more than two dozen separate but intertwining gardens. Mixing both common and exotic plants, the garden features a bamboo grove, fish ponds, a garden dedicated to the Emerald City and Yellow Brick Road, as well as a pink garden honoring the memory of his sister.
The Gardens of Oz is home to more than 500 species of thriving vegetation, each with its own unique life cycle and color pattern.
It took Denenberg eight years to fill in the acre lot with plants and flowers, a process he continues to tweak today. Denenberg has been offering tours of the garden for about 15 years now.
“It’s morphed in that the garden now is much more mature,” said Denenberg. “Life is about giving back. It doesn’t matter how rich or poor you are; give back to others. Even a smile can make someone’s day.”
