Class Act PVHS Celebrates 2020 Graduates By Ann Mead Ash

According to a letter sent to Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) seniors and parents in early May by principal John Trovato and assistant principal Amy Koberstein, the Class of 2020 entered the school four years ago with a “positive reputation,” and, during the time the learners attended, they “demonstrated that (their) reputation was deserved.” “Your resilience in the face of adversity, your empathy and kindness toward others, and your actions as leaders in this community have remained constant during your high school career,” the two wrote in the letter. “The events you have faced as a class this year have only seemed to strengthen your resolve and bring you

closer together.” The letter acknowledged that COVID-19 restrictions would make a traditional graduation ceremony for the 112 seniors on Thursday, May 28, impossible, but it also went on to detail how the Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) plans to use traditional and virtual components to provide graduates, families, administrators, faculty, and community members with a unique graduation experience. In addition, the district is planning a “Celebration of the Class of 2020” event for Saturday, Aug. 1, if the area has entered the “green” category as per state authorities. Any community member who would like to help support this event may contact amy_koberstein@pequea valley.org. Virtual graduation day was held on May 22, with seniors receiving diplomas in a drive-through event.

Graduation speakers included Kolby Bills, Robert Murphy, and Hope Fisher. Kolby is the son of Larry and Ginger Bills of Paradise. The title of his speech is “Inspire and Be Brave.” In his speech, he urged the other members of the PVHS Class of 2020 not to let fear hold them back. “Be brave enough to take a

new path. Step out of your comfort zone and reach for your dreams. Leave a legacy that will inspire those around you to live up to the dream that you’ve set as a reality,” he shared. In the fall, Kolby will attend Cairn University in Langhorne to study political science and criminal justice.

Robert is the son of Timothy and Stacie Murphy of Paradise. His speech, called “Perseverance as a Tool for Success,” explored the road ahead for his fellow class members. “Life is like one big marathon. In order to be successful, you have to pace yourself,” Robert told them via the video. In the See PVHS pg 9

MHALC Offers Mental Health Support

By Ann Mead Ash

A lot has been said lately about the importance of physical health as it pertains to the novel coronavirus. However, as people stay confined to their homes or report to jobs where they might be putting themselves at risk of illness, mental health must not be forgotten. “It is just as important to take protective action and precautions for your mental health as you would for your physical health. One cannot exist without the other,” advised Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC). Mental Health America of Lancaster County leaders, including “COVID-19 has changed the way (from left) president Tracey Lavallias, executive director Kim we think about things. More than 10 years ago, Stephanie Paige Cole, founder of Sweet Pea Project, an organization that offers comfort and support to families that have experienced the death of a baby, and her board members began holding a Sisters and Brothers Picnic for children who had a sibling who was lost during pregnancy or infancy. This year’s event was to be held on Saturday, June 6, at Dutch Wonderland. When the picnic was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, Cole wanted to re-create a part of the picnic in time for Mother’s Day, which was held on May 10. designated as a permanent Sweet Pea Project Remembrance Garden. “It has a big tree and hundreds of flowers, and our logo and sign is there,” said Cole, who noted that she is continually amazed at how the siblings flock to the garden during the picnic. “There’s pizza, ice cream, and roller coasters, and these (siblings) stop in the middle of this super fun day to plant a flower,” she said. “It has been the most meaningful part of our picnic.” To give bereaved mothers and

their families an opportunity to join together in a similar and safe way, Sweet Pea created a virtual flower garden. “I thought we should try to create a sense of community and salvage that flower piece,” said Cole, who noted that families do not forget the feeling of losing a child. MHALC from pg 1 We are also conflicted with feeling anxious but also grateful for some of the gifts that we have received as a result of this crisis. The forced series of events and feelings associated with them can throw our equilibrium off.” MHALC’s mission is to promote optimal mental health through advocacy, education, and support, so the organization has stepped up its efforts to help individuals cope with these trying times. “The uncertainty is what’s unsettling,” McDevitt said. “It’s important to remember, in spite of this all, you still have control over your day-to-day.” Both solitude and unrelenting closeness can be challenges. For people who seek connection, McDevitt recommended video chats with friends and family or calling someone they might not have talked to in a while. She noted that it is valuable to ask three simple questions of someone who might be struggling with loneliness: Do you feel left out? Do you lack companionship? Do you feel isolated? The answers to these questions can help lonely people acknowledge their isolation and begin to open contact with others in a supportive social network. “Research shows that just reaching out and being there for someone can truly save a life,” said MHALC child/family advocate Gretchen Gaudioso. Hugs and even handshakes have been sacrificed for social distancing, and the lack of physical contact can have a real impact. McDevitt recommended snuggling with pets or meditating to achieve calmness when needing touch. Conversely, designating a getaway spot in a house or apartment and then informing cohabitants of a need for space before being overwhelmed may help with too much closeness, McDevitt said. Establishing a routine for all household members ensures that there is order to each day, with time for short breaks built in. It is normal to feel anxiety, but when it persists or there is little to no relief during the day, it can be a good thing to take the mental health screening at www.mhalancaster.org/ screening-tools/. If any of the symptoms are persistent or impede daily function, professionally trained MHALC staff members can provide a listening ear or guidance toward more intensive support, McDevitt said. MHALC has extended its hours to meet the increased need for 1-to-1 phone support, and it has created virtual support groups. “We have seen a spike on all of our online mental health screenings, most notably more than 50% increase on our anxiety and depression screenings,” McDevitt reported. More than half of the people who have taken the screenings have never received treatment. “This could be the first time they have experienced any symptoms or concern for their mental health, See MHLALC pg 7

or their mental health challenges have increased to the point where they may need support. Everyone is experiencing or is being affected by someone who is experiencing anxiety right now, McDevitt said. Mental health treatment can be expensive, and McDevitt expressed concern for people who have lost their jobs and medical insurance and are unable to pay out of pocket for mental health supports. She noted that MHALC is currently working on connecting people to assistance. MHALC provides services free of charge to the public and relies heavily on charitable support. Its main fundraising event was scheduled in April and had to be canceled, so McDevitt suggested that individuals may contribute to the Mental Health Sustainability Fund by visiting www.mha lancaster.org/give-back/. A 24/7 mental health and crisis support line has been established for people dealing with anxiety or other difficult emotions. Individuals may call the toll-free warmline at 855-284-2494. Additionally, readers may find resources and helpful information by visiting www.mhalancaster.org/program -services-updates-page-covid-19/ or finding MHALC on Facebook.

United Way of Lancaster County recently received a $10,000 grant from Truist Financial Corporation to aid in efforts to support organizations and the people they serve who are financially struggling due to COVID19. The grant is part of the financial services company’s Truist Cares initiative, a $25-million philanthropic pledge announced in March to support basic needs, medical supplies and financial hardship relief due to COVID-19. United Way of Lancaster County reported that Lancaster County has seen an increase in individuals and families seeking assistance for food and housing. Many of those are receiving assistance for the first time.

fall, Robert plans to attend Millersville University, where he will pursue a bachelor’s degree in music education. Hope is the daughter of Omar and Michelle Fisher of Paradise. The title of her speech is “Bright Lights,” and in it, Hope encouraged her classmates to be beacons to others. “Wherever you are headed, and whatever your future may hold … find your own inner light and share it with the world,” she urged. In the fall, she plans to attend Lebanon Valley Honors College to major in business administration. One unique aspect of the PVHS graduation exercises is a visit from Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) superintendent Eric Orndorff, Trovato, Koberstein, and music teacher Nathan Bankert. Starting May 23, the four have been visiting seniors in a coordinated program called “Operation Graduation House Call,” which offers students a personalized send-off. “The idea was completely out of the box,” said Koberstein, who noted that a house call included a two- to three-minute ceremony during which Orndorff talked about what it means to be a PVHS Brave, Trovato and Koberstein spoke about the specific learner’s time at the school, and Bankert sang the school alma mater. The top 25 learners in the class were honored during an electronic event held on May 21. On Thursday, May 28, a Cruise for the Class of 2020 is slated to take place. Students will meet at the stadium parking lot and cruise the campus and other areas of the district in parade fashion. The video of the graduation of the PVHS Class of 2020 is scheduled to be posted on YouTube at 6:30 p.m. on May 28. The link to the video will be shared at www.pequeavalley.org/pvhs.

Since 2005, Lancaster County residents have known Global Aid Network (GAiN) as more than a former fish hatchery. Over the decades, the 70,000-square-foot warehouse on Quarry Road in Mount Joy has become a place for volunteers to serve others as they prepare and pack humanitarian aid to go to people in more than 30 countries around the world. Recently GAiN in the United States, the humanitarian ministry of Cru, announced that the ministry changed its name to Unto. The name change came after two years of research, planning

and prayer. This change will allow the ministry to more clearly convey its pursuit to serve people by relieving suffering, restoring dignity and revealing the eternal hope of Jesus. Unto will remain steadfast in its commitment to accelerate spiritual movements through humanitarian kindness, which helps Cru and its partners gain access, build credibility and increase effectiveness in ministry. Unto’s Mount Joy warehouse, known as the Global Logistics Center (GLC), is an integral part of serving more than 2 million people

each year. Expressing kindness to people around the world requires a process for transporting humanitarian aid to field partners so they can serve people by meeting their physical needs. Unto’s staff members, with the assistance of volunteers at the GLC, process, pack and ship humanitarian supplies to people around the world. The GLC will offer volunteer opportunities once social distancing protocols due to COVID-19 are lifted and activities resume. To learn more, readers may visit www.unto.com. For more than 25 years, Unto has leveraged strategic global partnerships and the service of volunteers to relieve suffering through humanitarian aid in more than 75 countries.
