PVHS Honors The Best Of The Class Of 2019 By Ann Mead Ash
On May 9, Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) showed appreciation to the highestranked students from the Class of 2019 by inviting seniors with the highest grade point averages, along with their parents, to gather for recognition and refreshments. The event, known as the Best of the Class of 2019, was opened by assistant principal Amy Koberstein. Addressing the students, she said, “As soon-to-be PVHS grads … you have been conditioned to know that there are countless ways to find success, which is both attainable and achievable by anyone who sets goals and works to achieve those goals.” Koberstein went
on to encourage the group, saying, “I hope you continue to … maintain the belief that your path should not and will not be traveled the same way as the path of your peers. I could not be prouder of the accomplishments that you have made.” Richard Eby, assistant to the superintendent for Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), spoke to the students specifically concerning the district’s Mass Customized Learning (MCL) program. “We are five years down this journey of trying to transform what traditional education has looked like for our learners,” Eby shared. He told the students, “Be proud of what you have been able to accomplish with MCL. You are going on to do greater things as you See Best Of The Class pg 7
Students who ranked in the top 25 in the Pequea Valley High School Class of 2019 were honored at a special reception held at the school on May 9. This is the fifth year the Pequea Valley School District held a reception to honor students who achieved this goal.
A Symbiotic Relationship Junior League Sponsors Aquaponics Project
According to Kate Lowry, a member of the Junior League of Lancaster, the organization has been looking for more ways to make a positive impact on the local community. “We did a community impact assessment about five years ago,” explained Lowry. “ We looked at challenges and issues, and we did an assessment of what the community needs and where the gaps are.” One result of that assessment is the Junior League of Lancaster’s Aquaponics Project. For the educational program, the group has entered into in partnership with J. E. Fritz Elementary

“The (children) always get so excited about (the Summer Reading Program),” said Carol Wenger, who was recently promoted to youth and children’s librarian at Pequea Valley Public Library (PVPL). “We have had great turnout. It’s such a simple way to get (children) involved in learning about their world and all kinds of activities and media.” PVPL will kick off its Summer Reading Program on Saturday, June 1, when children may pick up their reading logs See Reading Program pg 10

The 31st annual Lancaster Senior Games, held May 6 to 10, had another record-breaking year for attendance with a total of 1,004 participants and more than 335 volunteers. According to organizer Lisa Paulson of the Lancaster County Office of Aging, this was the first time that participation numbers broke the 1,000 mark. “People are having fun, and they just love doing it,” remarked committee member Sandy Hess in regards to the record-breaking participation. “The whole idea is to get anybody 55 and up to keep moving. And it’s not just physical; it’s about using your mind, too.” The bulk of the events took place at Spooky Nook Sports, with shuttle buses running to events held at other locations,
including the Lancaster YMCA, Amos Herr Park, Hempfield High School, Evergreen Golf Course, Leisure Lanes, Buchmiller Park, Overlook Golf Course, and Rocky Springs Lanes. Darts, bocce, and cornhole were among the most popular events, with more than 300 registrants each. Hess, who has been volunteering on the Senior Games committee for more than 20 years, noted that organizers adjust the event offerings from year to year according to what people seem to be interested in. “Every year we tweak something to make it work a little better,” said Hess. For instance, bridge is no longer offered due to waning interest, but now there is a pinochle tournament. Sometimes event demonstrations are scheduled into the week to test the waters before adding something to the official

competition list for the next year. New additions for 2019 included ladder golf, a Nook exercise sampler, and Pilates, as well as a rock climbing demonstration with an opportunity to climb. Volunteers begin meeting monthly in September each year to plan and continue the planning process right up until the events launch in May. “To me it’s rewarding, and I think it is to everybody who’s doing it or we wouldn’t be doing it, because we all volunteer,” said Hess. Lititz resident Carl Risser was among the dozens of individuals gathered under sunny skies at Amos Herr Park in Landisville on May 7 for the horseshoes competition. Risser earned first place for the 80- to 84-year-old division and also participated in bocce, ladder golf, shuffleboard, basketball, and the soccer penalty kick. “I love all of the games,” said Risser. “I love water volleyball too, but they don’t have that yet.” Formerly of New Holland, Risser said that it was when he moved into Brethren Village in 2007 that he really became active in recreational sports. He does a lot of running, goes to the exercise room on a daily basis, and has been participating in the Senior Games for at least eight years. Alan Ruby of Akron and Barry Lynch of Lancaster took first and second place, respectively, in the 85- to 89-year-old division for horseshoes. This was not the first time that Ruby and Lynch had contended against each other for the championship in horseshoes, and yet: “We’re still friends,” said Ruby with a laugh. Neither Ruby nor Lynch practices horseshoes throughout the year, but they both work out regularly at a local athletic club where they are part of the Silver

Braves Defeat Conrad Weiser For PIAA Crown by Ara Grigorian
There is a new catch phrase in sports lingo these days. It’s called “next man up.”
In the Pequea Valley boys’ tennis team’s run for the state championship, it was the “next serve” mentality in singles and doubles matches as the Braves battled back to net three straight wins mostly against difficult odds. The result - this squad can boast being the second sports program to bring a PIAA trophy back to Pequea Valley. The Braves topped Conrad Weiser 3-
2 at the Hershey Racquet Club on Saturday, May 18 for the Class-AA crown. “If you asked a hundred people at the start of the season who would win states, I don’t think any of them would have picked Pequea,” said head coach Eric Burns. Burns spoke of the way his squad responded to pressure-packed situations repeatedly on Friday, when they topped Quaker Valley at HRC in the quarterfinals, and on Saturday when they played two matches. “It was interesting that we played the semis and the championship on the same day,” Burns said.
“I think the guys really did a nice job by not putting the pressure on themselves of winning the state championship,” he said “They had a great frame of mind.” In the Conrad Wiser match, the Braves came back to record three team points by winning each of the singles matches in straight sets. “We were down 2-0,” Burns recalled. “And the singles were close to finishing. Hunter Winey was winning and when his opponent hit the ball out, the guys stormed the court. It was emotional for the families and the players.” Josh Heinrich and Josh Gingerich lost at number one doubles as Kurt Abell and Bryan Fox posted a 6-4, 6-3 win. Seth Karg and Joshua Jarvis fell short at number two doubles. Sophomore Brady Burns and senior teammates Devon Clemmer and Winey helped PV charge back and claim the championship. Burns won 6-4, 6-2 at first doubles; Clemmer won 6-2, 6-3 and Winey wrapped up the match, the season and the ultimate victory with a 6-3,
6-4 win. “Brady finished first and Devon Clemmer won within a few minutes,” said Burns. “It seemed to happen so quickly after losing the doubles. But we were in command of the singles.” Looking back at the Friday night match, the Braves’ singles sweep helped pull off a 3-1 victory. Winey won 6-1, 63. Burns won the third singles 6-0 6-1 and sandwiched in between was Clemmer’s exciting 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-0 victory over Andres Hubsch. It was an example of the team’s tenacity and never giving up. “Devon was down in the second set after losing the first one,” explained Burns. “Devon was running him all over the place. All that running caught up with him eventually. He won the second set in a tiebreak and the third set 6-0. He was truly tested.” Saturday’s semifinals round win included perhaps the most remarkable comeback. It came in the doubles match that Jarvis and Karg won at No. 2, not long after Heinrich and Gingerich had

won 6-1, 6-3. “We really needed that win by Jarvis and Karg,” Burns said. “This is their first year together at number two doubles,” Burns pointed out. “They’ve taken some tough losses. But they came up with some big wins too. “They were down 5-1 in the second set and came back to win,” continued the coach. That win by Jarvis and Karg ended 62, 7-6 (3) in favor of the Pequea pair. Meanwhile Winey came on to win 6-1, 7-5 at singles to claim PV’s third team point. “Them [Jarvis and Karg] coming back to win and giving us time to win at singles was key,” said Burns. It was also key because Clemmer had been in that classic battle the night before with the tiebreaker second set. “That was a big one for us,” Burns said. “They [Karg and Jarvis] hadn’t won many matches throughout the playoffs. It was a huge win for us. It got Clemmer off the court after that long match the night before.” While preparing for the upcoming title match, the team took an obvious Hershey excursion. “The team went to Chocolate World between matches,” explained the coach. “Brady went to the local high school and worked on his serve. “We came back and played a very
strong team,” Burns commented. “Conrad Weiser’s depth was really a concern. We did beat them in the district semifinals. It was a very close match. Three of those matches went three sets. “Playoff tennis is so close,” he added. “Every team is good. You’re playing good teams back-to-back-to-back. Your guys have to be competitive the whole time. You can’t have any letdowns. “Our guys fought so hard throughout the tournament, especially in the pivotal matches” Burns remarked. “All the players contributed. If the doubles doesn’t win the night before, we don’t make the semifinals. It was a season filled with intense playoffs” And since they made it and won it, it’s worth quoting once more. “If you asked a hundred people at the start of the season who would win states, I don’t think any of them would have picked Pequea. “It isn’t something you plan for; you put your best foot forward every day,” Burns concluded. BASEBALL Jack Olonovich had been in this setting before. Cam Barto had beaten him on a solo walk-off home run in extra innings following the Pequea pitcher’s three shutout innings in relief back on May 1. The Lancaster Catholic slugger’s blast won that regular season game 2-1 for the Crusaders, who went on to claim the

The home team got out to a com“We had six errors, which made it a tough loss to swallow,” said head Doug manding lead, scoring five times in the High. “But we didn’t give up; we kept first inning. The Lynx (12-8) rallied to eventually take a 7-5 lead in the fourth. battling.” “We scored two to tie it in the bottom of the fourth,” High noted. “We scored one in the seventh.” That seventh-inning run was not enough as Sarah Moore suffered a tough loss. She struck out three batters and walked only one, allowing 10 hits. The unearned runs were costly. “It was not by any means our best defensive effort,” High said. Maggie Johnson had two hits and an RBI. Moore had a pair of hits and drove in two runs. Caroline Bragg went 3-for-3 and scored two. Abi Tobelmann was 1-3 with a walk. She scored two. The Braves will say farewell to Claudia Schaubach, Josie Burns and Makenzi Dienner. Aside from the three seniors, most of the team should be back in Photo by Connor Hollinger 2020. “It was a fairly young group,” High Adryan Yothers delivers a pitch to the plate during Pequea Valsaid. “Claudia and Makenzi have been ley’s 10-6, District Three playoff victory over host Lancaster playing varsity for four years.”

Section Four crown. Olonovich and Barto found themselves bearing down on one another again on Monday, May 20, at Lancaster Catholic. This time the score was 10-6 in Pequea Valley’s favor and the bases were loaded in the Crusaders’ last at bat. “Things went our way this time,” said head coach Dwayne Reiter. “Last inning it became exciting. Jack loaded the bases and Cam Barto came up. “Same pitcher and same batter,” he added. “He had the walk-off home run against us in the last game. He took one almost to the fence, but it was caught.” End of ballgame. The win advanced the sixth-seeded Braves to the semifinals to face secondseeded Oley Valley. The Braves’ big inning was a six-run fifth inning, which put them ahead for good. This was a much different outcome and fortune. “Seemed like everything we hit in the last game, we hit right at them,” said Reiter. “This time around, they were struggling on the mound. We plated three runs on bases loaded walks.” The Crusaders took an early lead. The Braves battled back to tie it 3-3 only to see the Crusaders take the lead against starter Adryan Yothers. “I was calling the pitches,” Reiter explained. “I asked Adryan if he was comfortable with calling the pitches. He settled down for a bit.” The Crusaders made it 6-4 and that was when Olonovich relieved the fellow junior. “It was their third time through the lineup,” Reiter noted. “We pulled Adryan. “Jack Olonovich did a good job pulling us out of that inning without any more damage. “That kind of turned the corner for us,” he added. “We put up six in the fifth. Colin Bailey had a big two-run single. That was a big confidence booster for him. “Middle to bottom of the lineup came through in this game,” he continued. “It was a total team effort. The bottom of the lineup scored five of our runs.” Dale Stoltzfus had a sacrifice fly to drive in a run out of the number eight spot in the order. Yothers helped himself with a double and two walks. Olonovich did the same, stroking an RBI single. Dalton Temple had two hits, a walk and was hit by a pitch. He also scored a run. Zach Lynch and Dylan Knott also had key hits. SOFTBALL The Braves played host in the District Three Class 3A playoffs opening round. Oley Valley handed Pequea Valley a tough 9-8 loss. It was a defeat dotted with fielding errors. Pequea ended its season with a 13-9 record.

At the Lancaster Go Red for Women Luncheon, Doriana Musselman (left) shared about caring for her 2-year-old son, Emmett, who was born with a congenital heart defect.
More than 100 women from across Lancaster County gathered at the Lancaster Country Club on May 3 to raise awareness and funds in support of women’s heart health at the Lancaster Go Red for Women Luncheon. The event raised more than $250,000 for the American Heart Association (AHA). The event celebrated the 15th anniversary of the AHA’s Go Red for Women movement by encouraging women not only to wear red to raise awareness of heart disease in women, but also to take action to reduce their personal risk factors and work toward healthier communities. Megan Orr, registered dietitian with UPMC Pinnacle, presented a lecture on heart-healthy eating tips as part of a heart disease risk-reduction plan. Attendees also listened to Doriana Musselman of Lancaster talk about life as the caregiver of her 2-year-old son, Emmett Musselman, who was born with a congenital heart defect that required his first of three open heart surgeries when he was 32 hours old. Doriana discussed her son’s surgeries and recovery, the stress it put on their family and the importance of keeping the entire family heart-healthy so they can enjoy more time together. Sue Keyser of WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital received the Go Red for Women Friend of Heart award for more than 15 years of volunteer service. The event, hosted by radio personality Lisa Landis-Blowers, also included a silent auction, a mini manicure station provided by the Lancaster School of Cosmetology, and a heart-healthy lunch. Event cochairs included Elizabeth Eschbach, cardiology supervisor with UPMC Pinnacle, and Stacey Hankey, chief executive officer of Lanco Federal Credit Union. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Go Red for Women movement. Library Plans Barbecue Sale, Blast-Off Party By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The Strasburg-Heisler Library, 143 Precision Ave., Strasburg, will host a series of events this summer, beginning with a chicken barbecue fundraiser on Saturday, June 1, and a Blast-Off Party on Saturday, June 8. The barbecue will be sold at the Strasburg Jaycee Park, 218B Miller St., Strasburg, from 9 a.m. until gone. Customers may purchase meals containing a halfchicken, a potato, a roll and butter, applesauce, a cookie, and a beverage, and they may also buy chicken only. A drivethrough will be set up to expedite sales, but folks may park and eat on-site. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the library or at the event. The proceeds from the barbecue sale will support the Summer Reading Program, which has a theme of “The Universe of Stories.” “There’s a focus on space, so we got a lot of new books on planets, astronauts, and space exploration,” said executive director Kristin Fernitz. The Blast-Off Party will launch the Summer Reading Program. It will be held free of charge on the lawn in front of the library from 10 a.m. to noon on June 8. There will be games, prizes, a bounce house, and hand-dipped ice cream. Children may also pick up their reading logs and get started on their summer reading, Fernitz said. One unique feature of the Blast-Off Party will be the introduction of the new American Girl doll, Luciana Vega, who is an astronaut. Thanks to a donor, Luciana has a space suit that will go with her when she is borrowed from the library. At the party, children may enter to win the opportunity to be the first person to borrow the doll. “There’s a Mars habitat available if someone wants to buy it for the library,” Fernitz related. Luciana joins Zi Yang, Logan, and Gabriela in the library’s collection of
Best Of Class from pg 1
American Girl dolls. They may be borrowed for up to a week by children age 8 or older. A parent or guardian must sign out the dolls. The library will host a number of programs related to space and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) this summer. These will be presented by the North Museum of Nature and Science, Lancaster Parks and Recreation, and library staff members. There will also be an art club, a sewing program for teenagers, and a visit from the Girl Scout STEM mobile Registration for Summer Reading Program events will open two weeks prior to the respective event. Folks may sign up at www.strasburglibrary.org. The STEAM Challenge includes 10 workshops for youths ages 9 to 12 on topics such as coding, electrical circuits, art, music, marbles and mazes, mythical animals, food science, and even giant Yahtzee played on teams. The workshops will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays from June 12 to Aug. 7. There is no charge to attend, but participants must register for each workshop. Incentives to attend all 10 workshops will be offered. The STEAM Challenge will be led by librarian Gwen Barrows and is sponsored by a grant from the Heisler Foundation. The library is also planning a fund drive in July and will send letters to residents asking for their financial support of the library. Fernitz related that cuts were made to library funding from the state in 2008, and funding has never returned to the previous level. Thus, support from the community is crucial to the library’s continued operation. “We’ve been able to do things because of grants,” Fernitz said, noting that a Heisler Foundation grant recently purchased a new digital catalog station, a freestanding display rack, and furniture for the children’s area. For more information about supporting the library, readers may call 717-6878969 or email staff@strasburglibrary.org.
step out of the school.” Eby also noted that students should tend to their “social capital” as they move on from the school. “You have people you can turn to,” he said. “Don’t lose that. Maintain the friendships you have … the people who are in your corner to support you.” Bryant Ferris, president of the PVSD school board, introduced school board members who were present at the celebration. Ferris addressed the parents and other family members present, thanking them for supporting the students. He reminded the students of the important role that hard work should always maintain in their lives. “It has taken a lot of hard work to get here, and for the rest of your lives, no matter what you do, hard work will be a key ingredient in your recipe for success,” he noted. He also lauded PVHS for the opportunities the students had been given to take control of their education. “That will pay dividends,” he stated. The top 25 students were introduced by counselors Jason Davis and Rebecca Scheuer. The students were given the opportunity to talk about one facilitator who had been an influence during their education. Each student was also asked
to talk about activities he or she had been involved in at PVHS and to share his or her future plans. The top students of the PVHS Class of 2019 included Kylie Allain, Molly Ambroziak, Sierra Anastasi, Jonathan Bolton, Alexa Cacciola, Devon Clemmer, Sara Hershey, Alyssa Kennan, Alexander Lahr, Sara Lichty, Grace Martin, Margaret McCloskey, Kyle Mowday, Heather Quick, Megan Rogers, Ethan Rohrer, Claudia Shaubach, Brittany Shirk, Bridjitte Smith, Jamie Stephan, Jasmyn Stoltzfus, Sophia Weaver, Brielle Wilinsky, Hunter Winey, and Alyssa Yoder. Following the introductions, Koberstein asked Mowday, who is affectionately called “Grandpa” by his classmates, to offer a few words of wisdom. Mowday congratulated his fellow students and noted that he could see members of FFA, Student Council, chorus, band, drama club, and athletics in the room, stating, “We are a diverse group of people.” He thanked the students’ relatives and school staff who were in attendance. “It would not be possible to be here without family members, administrators, board members, school staff, and faculty,” he said. “Thank you.”

In its pursuit to combat childhood hunger locally, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services will kick off its Summer Lunch Program in June. Funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Summer Lunch Program provides nutritious meals to children three days a week over summer vacation in areas deemed to have a large concentration of lowincome housing. CVCCS is the local program administrator and is in charge of cooking, delivering, and serving the meals at three locations in the Conestoga Valley School District Flory Park, Country Club Apartments, and Ebenezer E.C. Church in Brownstown. Meals will be provided on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. from Monday, June 10, through Thursday, Aug. 15. While the program is geared toward children from low-income families, all children and youths up to age 18 are welcome to participate. Registration is not required, and no personal data is taken. In addition to serving meals to the children, site volunteers also oversee activities such as crafts and games to encourage healthy socialization. Various volunteer positions are available. Volunteers may assist as kitchen helpers, baggers, site managers, or staff members who serve and interact with the children. For more information or to sign up to volunteer, readers may contact Deb at 717-208-3711, ext. 103.

equipment, and other items necessary to the good of the group. “This is the one fundraiser each year that benefits the troop as a whole,” Jackson explained. “Other fundraisers - like popcorn sales - go into Scout accounts to pay for trips.” The troop aims to go camping at least once a month except for November and December. Thus, the equipment gets worn and replacements are necessary. Greater numbers of inventory are also required. “Our troop is growing a ton, so we need to buy tents to grow (the inventory) proportionately,” Jackson said. The Band,” said Mark Arbogast, president of the Strasburg Community Parks Foundation, which sponsors the concert series. “DeRose and the band performed last summer, and we had many requests for them to return again to our outdoor stage, so we are very excited that they will be on hand to open our summer concert series.” Concert guests are advised to bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating on the soft-turf and terraced amphitheater. Coolers and alcoholic beverages will be prohibited. Those who wish to eat a pre-show meal al fresco may use picnic tables in and beside the park’s pavilion. “We encourage our visitors to patronize our food vendors,” Arbogast commented, noting that an assortment of food, cold beverages, and Italian water ice will be available for purchase. The concert series will continue with shows on Saturdays, June 29, July 13, and Aug. 3 and 17. Admission is open to the general public and free of charge due to the generosity of local concert sponsors. All shows will begin at 6:30 p.m. Ample park-

Sounds of Strasburg, the annual series of free concerts in Strasburg Community Park, will begin with performances by Mark DeRose and Dreadnot on Saturday, June 8, at 6:30 p.m. The first set of the evening will feature a child-focused program by DeRose. DeRose has been a solo artist in the children’s entertainment market for many years and enjoys communicating his encouraging message to young listeners through regular shows in the Pennsylvania Library Summer Reading Program and other opportunities. His original songs promote living life to its fullest while being both creative and true to oneself. After the intermission, DeRose will be joined on stage by the band Dreadnot, which will present a high-energy performance of upbeat, feel-good music that is filled with rootsy, blue-eyed soul and classic rock of the late 1960s and 1970s. The band’s goal is to spread a little joy through music. “This will be a great concert for fans of Van Morrison, Dave Matthews, the Doobie Brothers, the Allman Brothers Band, and

at the library, 31 Center St., Intercourse. The Salisbury Township Branch, located at 835 Houston Run Drive, Gap, will also take part in the program. All area residents who call PVPL or the Salisbury Branch their home library are welcome to take part. The theme for this year’s program is “A Universe of Stories.” The Lancaster County Library System chose the theme because it provides an opportunity to highlight the 50th anniversary of the moon landing this summer, and a number of the activities will be focused on NASA. In addition, other topics designed to inspire children to dream, explore, and create will be scheduled. According to Wenger, reading logs are divided into age groups. “We have different (requirements) for each age group,” she explained, noting that a read-aloud log is available for children from birth to 4 years of age. Children ages 5 to 9 may work to complete a junior log. A special tweens log may be used by those ages 10 to 12, and teenagers, those ages 13 to 19, will have a log as well. “Each age group has different activities they need to complete, and when they complete them, they receive tickets for prizes from local businesses,” explained Wenger. Calling the prizes “some pretty cool things,” Wenger noted that for the readaloud group, coupons for a bounce house amusement, a fast-food chain, a local railroad attraction, and an illusion show will be among the prizes. Junior group prizes will include the read-aloud prizes, plus local pretzel and sandwich coupons and gift certificates to bowling alleys,

local ice and roller rinks, miniature golf, and more. For tweens, coupons for comics, laser tag, and more will also be included, and for teenagers cupcakes, ice cream, and zipline coupons will be added to the other options. Special coupons for a local amusement park will also be available for those who complete five hours of reading. In addition, a new Fitness Quest for 5to 9-year-olds will encourage children in this age group to visit five Lancaster County parks. “There will be a booklet with fun activities (for them),” said Wenger. Events associated with the Summer Reading Program that will be held in June include “The Spirit of Lindbergh” presented by Neill Hartley at PVPL on Thursday, June 13, at 11:15 a.m. The same program will be held at the Salisbury Branch on Wednesday, June 19, at 10 a.m. On Tuesday, June 18, “The Fabulous Franklin,” based on Ben Franklin’s wit and wisdom and presented by Family Stages, will be held at 11:15 a.m. at PVPL. The Franklin presentation will visit the Salisbury Branch on Wednesday, June 26, at 10 a.m. Phredd’s “Ukulele One Man Band” original music performance will be presented at PVPL only at 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday, June 25. Wenger mentioned that several of the programs will be geared to focus on space. “We have the North Museum in July doing the ‘Mission to the Moon’ program,” noted Wenger, referencing a program that will be presented at PVPL on Tuesday, July 2, at 10:30 a.m. In addition, the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will present “Let’s Take a Walk on the Moon” at PVPL on Tuesday, July 16, at 11:15 a.m. A full schedule of events at both libraries may be found at www.pvpl.org. Wenger emphasized that to receive the prizes they have earned, children must return their completed logs to the PVPL by Saturday, Aug. 10. Readers who would like more information about PVPL may search for “Pequea Valley Public Library” on Facebook.

Nitrites are converted to nitrate to feed the plants. At the top, rosemary, parsley, and tiny tomato plants are growing. Landis said that the 50,000 to 60,000 yearly Science Factory visitors will have the opportunity to read signage that explains the cycle and all the chemistry behind it. “Our STEM educator, Angel Kilyan, is a chemist, so she would like to integrate the aquaponics in the ecology and chemistry programming, said Landis. The Junior League of Lancaster is working toward putting an aquaponics tank in each Lancaster County school. Readers who would like to learn more about how the program could become part of their neighborhood school may contact the league at girlsinstem@jllancaster.org. The Junior League of Lancaster is an organization of women who promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women, and work to improve the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. The group has been active in the area for nearly 100 years.

with Darby Schock, who teaches math and science at Stone. League members worked with Fritz and the Science Factory on a similar time table. In January 2019, the aquaponics tanks arrived. At Stone, freshman and sophomore students assembled the tanks and prepared the clay media and peat plugs before adding arugula, rainbow Swiss chard, and dill. Kristen, a student at The Stone Independent School, said that the class members working on the project feed the fish, test the water, and check on the plants. Water is tested for pH range, temperature, and contamination. Schock noted that the project lends itself to a variety of lessons. “We can teach photosynthesis, the nitrogen cycle in the water, aquaculture, raising fish, (and) the environment the fish like, he said. “There are chemistry elements to (testing the water). At the Lancaster Science Factory, director Emily Landis noted that the tank was set up to cycle for about six weeks before seven active fish were added. “The most important thing about setting up is establishing the right balance, said Landis. Lazos noted that the cycling creates a

symbiotic relationships, she noted, adding that nutrition and alternative methods of farming can also be discussed. “You can get into so many conversations and thought processes (with students) based on this one little system, she said. Impressed with the aquaponics systems the league had seen, league member Pam Lazos contacted Mike Simpson, director of The Stone Independent School, in the summer of 2018. Simpson was interested, and he put Lazos in contact

According to Nicole Keifer, the systems offer several benefits that appealed to league members. “We saw these systems, and (we) thought they were a hands-on and exciting way to get an aquaponics system into a classroom, said Keifer, who noted that the units are compact and cost-effective. “(Students) can learn about ecosystems, and they can learn about the fish life cycle and

Troop 56 from pg 9 that the troop is popular because members are encouraged to live by the Scout Law in everyday life. “We grow together from boys to young men,” he added. “We become good citizens that help out the community. When asked, we’re quick to help out.” The troop recently did some mulching at Wesley United Methodist Church, which is its charter organization. Additionally, while camping at the Lancaster County Conservancy, troop members spent time pulling garlic mustard. The group also performs roadside cleanup on Route 896, hosts flag retirement ceremonies twice a year, and places flags at gravesites for Memorial Day. The group takes time out for educational fun, however. This summer, seven Scouts and four leaders will travel to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico to backpack 63 miles in 11 days. As part of their training, the 11 individuals recently attended Philmont Shakedown at Camp Mack, during which they hiked 10 miles. The hiking will not be the biggest challenge, Jackson said. The altitude at Philmont ranges from 10 to 20 times higher than that of Lancaster County. “I think it’ll be a lot of fun, (though),” Jackson remarked. “My older friends who have gone said it’s a great experience.” While the 11 older boys and adults are in New Mexico, the remainder of the troop will attend summer camp at Horseshoe Scout Reservation in Rising Sun, Md. During the seven days there, troop members will have the opportunity to work on requirements for many different forms of advancement, including rank, merit badges, and specialty programs, that they might not have access to otherwise. New members are welcome to join Troop 56. The group meets every Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Scout House, 120 S. Jackson St., Strasburg. Harold Kilhefner will bring his nearly 20-year-old red Audi TT to the Terre Hill Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill, for the 37th annual Antique and Classic Car Show to be held there on Sunday, June 2, beginning with car registration at 8 a.m. The car will be entered in class 16, one of 17 classes that are sponsored by local businesses. “Class 16 is for cars, trucks, and motorcycles that are not yet 25 years old,” explained Kilhefner. “It’s a 2001, and it’s unique and different, which makes it perfect for a class like that.” The first six classes are devoted to antique cars ranging from 1900 to 1994. Categories for street rods and street machines are included, along with a couple classes for Camaros, Firebirds, Barracudas, Javelins, and Mustangs. Corvettes, trucks, motorcycles, and farm tractors will each have a class, and an open class will be designated for vehicles built from 1985 to 2019. Class 17 is for AACA (Antique Automobile Club of America) Seniors. “(This class is) for vehicles that have been judged typically at Hershey or some other AACA event,” explained Kilhefner. “They have been judged to a high standard.” Rather than bring in judges to examine that variety of cars, the event will provide each registered car owner with a ballot to vote on his or her favorites. “Everyone votes for everything, and that has worked out really well,” said Kilhefner. Representatives of the Weaverland Valley Fire Company will choose a single car to receive a Best of Show trophy. In 2018, Craig Brossman’s 1971 Mustang Mach 1 received the trophy. “This year there will be a prize packet for the Best of Show,” said Kilhefner, who added that winners will be announced at 2:30 p.m. Cars receiving first-, second, and third-place recognition for each class will be paraded to the stage areas to receive cash prizes. Owners may register vehicles until 11:30 a.m. Voting will end at 2 p.m. The first 100 owners to register vehicles will each receive a dash plaque. In addition, registered owners will receive tickets for door prize drawings. Prizes will be given away between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. The show is all about cars, but the funds that will be raised by the event will help support the Weaverland Valley Fire Company, which serves the towns of Terre Hill and Goodville. “This is one of the fire company’s larger fundraisers,” noted Kilhefner. There is no charge for spectators to attend the show. The Weaverland Valley Fire Company will prepare breakfast and lunch items for purchase in the park pavilion from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. The show will be held rain or shine. Readers who have questions about the event may call 717445-4581.

in the juvenile justice system to develop empathy. LancasterLebanon IU13 was granted $13,800 for its Envision U Symposium, which helps high-risk youths in their transition to adulthood. CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health was granted $10,000 for its program Take Your Time: A Universal Mindful Education Series for Elementary Students, Teachers and Families.
