Church To Collect Food For The Factory By Francine Fulton

Pequea Evangelical Congregational Church members (from left) Alan Kinsey, and Mary Jane and Wilmer Stoltzfus invite the community to donate nonperishable food items as part of a “Fill the Trailer” food drive to benefit The Factory Ministries. The food drive will take place every Thursday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the church in Gap.

As part of an effort to help the community during this time of need, Pequea Evangelical Congregational (EC) Church in Gap is hosting a “Fill the Trailer” food drive to benefit The Factory Ministries. The food drive will take place every Thursday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the church, 5482 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap. “The food drive will take place every Thursday for the foreseeable future as we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic,” stated congregation member Jesse Bills. Volunteers will be at the church during those hours to accept the donations. “There will be people there, so you don’t even have to get out of your car,” said Bills. All donations will be put into a trailer owned by local electrician Carl Sandoe, who has agreed to let the church use the vehicle on Thursdays.

He said the food drive is a way to still serve the community while the church doors are temporarily shuttered. “Obviously, we can’t have church in the normal way; we were trying to think of a way to benefit the community outside of what we do at services,” Bills said. “(The Factory has) an open door for us to help and partner with them.” The Factory Ministries operates a youth center, offers social service programs, and runs a food pantry. Bridge Of Hope Opens Lancaster Office Neighboring Volunteers Sought To Help Fight Homelessness By Ann Mead Ash

In August of 2019, Bridge of Hope Lancaster and Chester Counties and Good Samaritan Services parted ways. Bridge of Hope, a national organization that fights homelessness through community support efforts, made the decision to operate Bridge of Hope programs separately in both Lancaster and Chester counties. In Lancaster County, Audrey Metzler became the county director, moving into the organization’s new offices at 255 Butler Ave., Suite 205, Lancaster, in December. Metzler worked for Bridge of Hope for more than a decade, leaving her post in 2008 and returning to the organization and to Lancaster in late 2019. In her new role, she will handle some case management and train and coordinate local See Bridge Of Hope pg 3

All the donated food will be delivered to The Factory Ministries on the next day for “Food Friday.” Since the COVID-19 outbreak, The Factory, located in the Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, has opened its food pantry on Fridays to accept donations from 9 a.m. to noon. A tent is set up outside the building, and shopping carts are available for donors to use to drop off food items in a safe way. A Food Friday “shopping list” is available weekly at www.facebook.com /TheFactoryMinistries. “They started Food Friday because of the pandemic and the greater need,” Bills said. “Any nonperishable food donation will be accepted, but The Factory puts out a list of different items each week, so it changes. (The recent) list included cereal, tuna, dish soap and salsa.” Bills said that the church held the first food drive for congregation members, which was well attended. “We

volunteer groups through churches and other faith groups, such as Bible studies and small groups. “I will be recruiting and training Neighboring Volunteers from local churches and matching them up with families (facing homelessness), said Metzler, who explained that groups help to support families who are on the brink of homelessness. She shared that responsibilities are often divided with designated positions, including a group coordinator, members who help find housing, a child care coordinator, and a transportation coordinator. According to Edith Yoder, national executive director of Bridge of Hope, the volunteer groups are referred to as neighborhoods of support. “There’s a case manager and six to 10 volunteers from a neighboring church, said Yoder, who noted that the volunteer group members are encouraged to get to know the head of the family they will work with, often the mother, and then spend time with the family engaging in fun group activities. Bridge of Hope will provide case management and connections to area resources the family may need. Yoder noted that many volunteers are not aware of how valuable their help can be. “We are really emphasizing that one of the gifts group members

support families. Metzler will be meeting with churches and other groups throughout the county to encourage volunteers to connect with Bridge of Hope as the organization looks to increase the number of families in the area it serves. “Our vision is to have a church in each school district ready to jump in when a family (needs help), said Yoder. “We are looking to engage (with) those who are looking to have a relational outreach opportunity. She added, “Audrey

One goal of Bridge of Hope is to move a family into housing within two months of entering the program. To reach that milestone, the organization partners with faith-based groups and landlords within a community. “We provide rental assistance on a decreasing basis, explained Yoder. “We are looking for landlords who want to

This year, the earnings will also help to cover the costs of replacing the food pavilion, which the board of directors had planned to tear down and rebuild on the same footprint this summer. The pavilion is the site of the burger, milkshake, pork barbecue, and soup stands during the fair. The chicken barbecue sale takes place on the fairgrounds and has always been operated as a drive-through because there are no facilities to eat on-site during the summer, Welk said. That makes this event ideal for a fundraiser during social distancing. The only significant difference this year is that tickets will not be available for presale. Instead, the food will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Only cash will be accepted as payment. All of the volunteers will wear gloves and masks. June 13. Chicken halves will be available with or without meals, which will include applesauce, rolls, chips, dessert, and a beverage. Welk said that whoopie pies are currently planned as the dessert. The West Lampeter Fair is set for Wednesday through Friday, Sept. 23 to 25. Planning for the fair is continuing through phone calls and emails. “As of now, the fair is still a go,” Welk commented. “If things don’t go into the green (shutdown phase), we might have to postpone it. Welk noted that if the weather is nice and the ground is dry, vehicles may be directed into a serpentine pattern on the fields so that traffic does not back up on Village Road. The entire barbecue sale is run by volunteers. The fair queen typically participates, and Welk said he hoped 2019 fair queen Jessica Herr will be able to attend. The new crop of fair queen candidates also usually helps with the sale so the individuals can gain insight into what the fair is about. Welk planned to discuss the attendance by the 2020 fair queen candidates with coordinator Anita Martin. Fair directors begin grilling the chicken halves starting around 6 a.m. on the day of the sale. This year, the chicken should be ready for purchase by 10:30 a.m. on

would want a break from cooking,” West Lampeter Fair board chair Don Welk said when announcing the fair’s annual chicken barbecue will be held as planned on June 13 at the fairgrounds, 851 Village Road, Lampeter. “Buy some extra halves so you don’t have to cook later on,” he suggested. The barbecue sale always takes place on the second Saturday in June, and Welk estimated that it has been held for at least 50 years. “They used to have it there at the fairgrounds when I was a kid,” he added. Fair director Mark Myer has run the sale countless times, but he stepped back this year. Welk, who had been in charge of the event about 25 years ago, is the interim chair. Myer is helping behind the scenes and sharing his expertise. The proceeds from the chicken barbecues help to maintain the facilities on the fairgrounds and to run the fair in September. It is the only fundraiser for the fair, although the organization garners funds from selling

For young people involved in FFA programs around the commonwealth, one of the high points of the year is the Pennsylvania FFA state convention held annually at Penn State University in early June. Typically, approximately 1,500 FFA members attend the convention, which focuses on career and leadership development events during interactive and hands-on competitions or activities. The in-person state convention has been canceled and will be replaced with a virtual state convention that will be held the week of Monday, June 8. Readers may contact Michael Brammer, executive director of the Pennsylvania FFA Association, at mbrammer@paffa.org or 717580-4864 for more details. As a sign of its support for seniors who

Stokes stated that the organization once owned a house on the grounds of Pleasant View Retirement Community in Manheim. Most recently, the building, which has been razed, was used as a home for teen mothers and their children. “As the model of best practices changed over time, so did we,” said Stokes. “There was an evolution of types of clients we could handle.” Currently, COBYS provides foster care through two units. “One is the permanency unit, which is a direct contract with Lancaster County Children and Youth Services,” said Stokes. “(That group) functions as an extension of the county caseworkers.” The permanency unit has a capacity of 80 to 100 children in care depending on the number of families available. “We also have COBYS foster care resource parents that we train,” said Stokes, who noted that about 80 to 100 children may be placed with those families. Stokes explained that about 100 families are approved, but all those families may not be available to take children due to specifications in the number of children they can accept and their ages.

Glen Faus, who served as director of COBYS for more than 20 years, was honored at the event. “We are full most of the time, so we are always approving new resource parents,” Stokes added. Stokes noted that while many things remain the same about the care provided to children, there have also been many changes. “We (better) understand the role trauma plays in life and how you care for foster children and how we do therapy,” she said. The number of therapists serving COBYS clients has tripled since 2011. “It is best practice to offer trauma training,” she added. Another change has been the types of parenting classes the organization holds. “One-on-one interaction and care in a loving home has not changed, (though),” she said. According to Stokes, the dedication of the in-office staff at COBYS has remained constant as well. “There’s also a lot about the way we deliver care that hasn’t changed,” she said. “We started as a small agency with a small staff,” Stokes recalled. “We have always been focused on the one child in front of (each caseworker) … the one case … that one family and how (staff members) provide focused care for each of (those cases).” Stokes said that this focus has remained the same even though the number of families COBYS serves has grown. “We have maintained with all of our workers (the goal to always) provide that quality of care,” she said. Cunningham summed up the service COBYS has provided for four decades, saying, “For 40 years, our mission and guidance by Christian faith remains the same, but has been strengthened. Our level of care is the same, but renewed through deeper understanding and resources.” Readers who would like to know more about COBYS may visit www.cobys.org.

The North Museum of Nature and Science in Lancaster raised $115,000 during its virtual gala on May 16. The fifth annual Cosmic Bash was renamed Bash the Pandemic and held virtually this year. Funds will support the museum’s STEM education efforts. The event was livestreamed at www.bashthepandemic.org. The site currently hosts the live feed recording for viewing as well as opportunities to bid on items in the Auction Re-Mix happening now. The museum noted that financial support is greatly appreciated. The evening featured a number of program segments, with the highlight of the evening being the first ever screening of “The Information Matrix,” a short-form documentary hosted by actor Laurence Fishburne. The film features the North Museum and Dr. Roger Thomas, professor emeritus at Franklin & Marshall College. Many sponsors and supporters contributed to the event, and more details are available at www.northmuseum.org. The mentors of SCORE Chapter 16 responded swiftly to the COVID-19 crisis, which closed all nonessential businesses in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. An idea that was created from an offer of co-mentor support by SCORE mentor Steve Darby was later augmented through the talents of mentor subject matter experts Lou Davenport and Rich Bidgood. This led to the creation of a COVID-19 Emergency Funding Mentor Support Team which was able to respond quickly and effectively to both existing clients and a steady stream of new ones. In the month of April, the volunteer mentors of SCORE Chapter 16 offered expert guidance to clients in the small business and nonprofit communities. The chapter noted that total mentoring sessions more than doubled over those of April 2019; the number of established businesses mentored increased by 62%; eight new volunteer mentors were added in April; and Chapter 16 responded to 54 new mentor requests in April. In addition to Darby, Davenport and Bidgood, the COVID-19 Emergency Funding Mentor Support Team includes Patrick Kameen, Kevin Saint-Cyr, William Regitz, Thomas Murphy, Keith Landis, Jim Frey, Fred Engle, Eric Parker, Hugh MacMaster, Hal Ranck, David Diffenderffer, Karen Shenk, Michael Schwartz. For information about the latest round of the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) funding, readers may contact their current SCORE mentor or request a mentor by visiting https://core.score.org and looking for Mentoring under Business Advice. Mentoring sessions can be held via phone, email, video, and chat services.
