Checking In With Friendship Community Lancaster Chef Garners Gold With Regional Team By Dayna M. Reidenouer
For several months, life has looked a little bit different for Lancaster County residents, and that includes individuals served by Friendship Community, 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. Friendship Community is a faithbased, licensed provider of disability services and has been cultivating the capabilities of intellectually disabled and autistic individuals since 1972. The organization currently serves more than 200 people in various programs, including 27 residential homes, three daytime programs, and those living with their loved ones or independently in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Susan Notter of Lancaster, a pastry chef, is one of eight professionals, all from the East Coast of the United States, who participated as a regional team in the Culinary Olympics held in Stuttgart, Germany, from Feb. 14 to 19. The event is an international culinary competition held every four years. The Olympics drew 1,800 chefs from nearly 70 countries. The group with which Notter participated won a gold medal for its display program and placed third overall in the regional team category, taking home a bronze medal. Dads have many great qualities. With Father’s Day on the way, townlively.com is giving you an opportunity to honor your dad by sharing what you love about him.
Before COVID-19 restrictions were instituted in mid-March, Christy Fieldsa, the mother of two Paradise Elementary School students, had plans to create some little libraries within the Pequea Valley School District (PVSD). “I had started planning this in the winter,” recalled Christy. “(The) goal was to work with CORE Academy (at Pequea Valley High School) to have (students) build the (library) stands.” Christy had contacted Cathy Koenig, director of student services for Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), about working with CORE, and she planned to ask local businesses to help fund the boxes in exchange for having the business names on the little libraries. “We would talk to businesses about helping to place them,” said Christy, who had hoped to have up to six little libraries in the district by the end of the 2020 spring school term. When the school term ended in March
and the public libraries closed to visitors, Christy began pondering how to proceed. She found a free piece of furniture on social media that fit well on her porch and provided shelving and cupboards. In the cabinet, she has placed books, coloring books, learning materials, crayons, and activity packs. Christy believes the table, sheltered on the porch, will be able to withstand the elements. Christy’s daughter, Juliana, who is a second-grade learner, loves rainbows, so Christy used rainbow colors to create a sign that reads “Little Free Porch Library” for the front of the cabinet. “Children read more when books are readily accessible,” said Christy. “(With the Little Free Porch Library), they don’t have to worry about bringing a book back, but if they want to return it and take another, they could.” Christy stated that books picked up on her porch can be dropped off in any little library in or outside the county. “Drop it in Quarryville or Atglen or wherever else there are little libraries.” See Little Porch Library pg 7

worked for a year in a hotel before attending culinary school in Leicester, England, where she earned a degree in hospitality management. Knowing she wanted to specialize in pastries, Notter worked evenings and weekends for a small bakery in Melton Mowbray that focused on European-style pastries. At the age of 19, Notter completed culinary school and moved to Germany to work full time in the pastry field. She was employed by a large bakery that distributed products to 10 of its own pastry stores. For more than two years, Notter moved between departments, learning how to

More recently, she earned gold as a member of a U.S. team that competed in the Culinary Olympics in Erfurt, Germany, in 2016. Growing up in Cheshire, England, Notter often created sweet treats for her three younger sisters. “My parents didn’t buy boxed cookies and cakes,” recalled Notter. “When we wanted something sweet to eat, I had to make it.” Notter soon discovered that she enjoyed baking cakes and organizing birthday parties. From there, Notter moved to Luzerne, Switzerland, to work in chocolate. She created bonbons, bars, and other confectionary treats for four months on a work visa. In 1983, she transferred to Zurich, where she began taking evening classes to learn to work with sugar. The teacher saw that she had talent, and she became his assistant. “We taught people to work with sugar in a way that was very learnable,” said Notter. The pair began competing and teaching in other countries, eventually relocating to the U.S. in 1992. After working for Albert Uster Imports as corporate pastry chef, Notter took a job in Baltimore and found a house just over the Pennsylvania border in New Freedom around 2008. She worked in a variety of positions, including as director of the pastry arts program for YTI Lancaster. She is now employed as a distribution partner with Max Felchlin AG as a U.S. sales professional. For the Culinary Olympics in Germany, the team was required to create a fivecourse menu, four different finger foods, three appetizer plates, four plated desserts, and four petit fours. Notter was responsible for the desserts and the petit fours. Notter noted that the competition was steep. “The

each of the clients they serve are valued. Direct contacts with vendors providing personal protective equipment are also needed. Readers may buy original artwork and items from the Primitives by Kathy Collaborative Collection at www.friendshipart.net. Cards of encouragement and gratitude for the staff members may be mailed to Friendship Community, Attn: Becky. Friendship also accepts donations at www.friendshipcommunity.net/donate for the maintenance and renovation of residential homes and other buildings. “We continually strive to maintain state and federal requirements in an updated, warm, and inviting atmosphere, Schuit remarked. “These important day program and residential home improvements, including both internal and external repairs, call for critical community contributions due to the lack of funding for such necessary adjustments. Anyone interested in providing in-kind donations of goods or services may contact volunteer coordinator Phil Horning at 717-656-2466, ext. 1165, and he will work with the associate director of facility services to prioritize the needs.

support professionals and nurses to behavioral specialists and art instructors, as well as a full complement of administrative staff members. As a result of the shutdown, the day programs - including the Friendship Heart Gallery studio and Meaningful Day Academy - were immediately closed. Instead of Friendship’s clients spending time together in one place, each individual had to stay in his or her respective home. This resulted in staff members having to provide aroundthe-clock care at each home, when they had not previously done that, and that prompted schedule changes, flexibility, and creativity. Friendship Community also formed an urgent response team to prepare for the possibility of illness. Team members made sure to maintain direct contact with clients, clients’ families, and government authorities at all levels, and they also implemented protocols to keep everyone safe. Friendship CEO Gwen Schuit, BSN, M.Ed., NHA, credited two sewing circles - Sewing Hope, a group associated with Worship Center, and Bird-inHand Fabric - with providing cloth masks for Friendship’s staff members and clients. Schuit noted that while the masks are protective, they pose significant challenges. “(Some clients) have struggled with team members wearing masks as the masks inhibit visualization of facial expression and can alter verbal communication, Schuit explained. “Furthermore, some individuals have even exhibited new behaviors related to their fears. Team members have needed to utilize new techniques in order to maintain their established trusting relationships with individuals in order to safely wear the masks for any extended period of time. Following established routines is important for many of Friendship’s clients, so staff members sought out ways to alleviate the stress caused by the shutdown’s disruption of regular activities. Two parents had a source for iPads, and Friendship was able to obtain enough of the electronic tablets so that every home and support location could have one. The iPads have enabled Friendship clients to regularly connect with family members and friends and to engage in meaningful activities. “The acquisition of these iPads has also enabled the spiritual nurture and community life coordinator to connect individually, provide group prayer meetings, and orchestrate uplifting daily videos and songs, Schuit said. Friendship Community is a nonprofit organization, and it had scheduled its 17th annual Friendship Heart Gallery art auction on March 26. That event has been rescheduled for Thursday, July 16, and the FEST, Auction, and 5K has been postponed until Saturday, Sept. 26. The golf tournament and anniversary dinner are still slated to run as planned on Thursday, Sept. 10, and Thursday, Oct. 22, respectively. In the meantime, Schuit invites readers to support Friendship Community in several ways. Prayers for the safety and good health of all team members, their families, and

Junior Achievement of South Central Pennsylvania (JA) will not hold its in-person A Global Tasting Food, Wine and Silent Auction event this year, but it will hold the silent auction portion of the event virtually. This will run from Monday, June 15, at 9 a.m. to Friday, June 19, at 9 p.m. at www.bidpal.net/jawine. It is free to register and participate in the auction. Winning bidders will receive their items through the mail if possible, and larger items will be available for pickup at the JA office. This spring, the Junior Achievement team helped local educators by providing them with JA content to use in their digital classrooms, and more than 25,000 local students experienced the JA program virtually. Funds raised during the silent auction will go toward providing JA programming this fall in whatever format schools require. The next in-person A Global Tasting event will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2021.

Little Porch Library from pg 1 Christy’s library is located at 113 Harristown Road, Paradise, not far from Paradise Elementary School. Her friend Melody Infantolino is setting up a similar library at her home at 789 Bellevue Ave., Gap. “ We would like to get some (little libraries) on the Salisbury side of the district,” she said. Looking ahead, Christy still hopes to create the free libraries and place them throughout the community. “We would ask Paradise Township if we could put one in the park or one could be placed at The Factory or at people’s homes, businesses, and other places people frequent such as gas stations,” said Christy, who emphasized that the libraries should be outdoors and accessible at all times. She also hopes to recruit a network of volunteers to check the libraries monthly and request books or other supplies as needed to keep them stocked. As the county opens up, Christy is hoping the CORE Academy (Career Occupation Relative Education) will be able to create the little libraries that were originally planned when she spoke with Koenig months ago. Koenig was working with CORE Academy technology teacher Josiah Moon and the other CORE teachers to instruct the students in completing the boxes. “The goal now is to have books out there where children can access them, especially this summer,” said Christy, who said donations of books and other supplies are welcome. “People can drop them off (on the porch) or pick them up with no contact,” she said, noting that she is comfortable with families picking up and dropping off books at her home. “You just have to trust,” she said.
The Strasburg Community Parks Foundation is committed to providing the community with musical entertainment in a positive way and is currently exploring a variety of plans to do so in an appropriate manner and time. The foundation continues to monitor state and local government updates and guidelines. The concerts scheduled for Saturdays, June 13 and 27, are postponed at this time. Readers may visit www.strasburgpark.org or search for “Strasburg Community Park” on Facebook for updates.

The librarian will ask for the patron’s name, library card number and specific books or topics of books they would like. Then, the librarian will choose from materials available at the library to fill the requests as closely as possible. Patrons will then be given a time, probably the following day, to pick up their materials. They should arrive at the appointed time, park in the library lot and retrieve the books, which will be in a bag labeled with their last name. The bags will be placed on

a table near the bike rack at the bottom of the entrance stairs. No one will be permitted to enter the library or meet in person. No audiobooks or magazines can be checked out during the yellow phase. Materials must be in the library at the time of order. No holds or interlibrary loans will be allowed. Also, patrons should not leave a message on the library’s answering machine. Only materials ordered by direct conversation with a staff member will be processed. “In our library, there will be two people per shift,” explained library director Trish Vandenbosch. “Someone will answer the phone to get people’s requests. If people have access to a computer, it will make it really easy.” For those who do not have a computer, it will be helpful if they know an author or type of book they are interested in borrowing. “Hopefully, people will give us titles and we can give them the exact book, but they (may request) a Danielle Steele book or a book about baseball,” noted Vandenbosch. She explained that the new rules were published by the Office of Commonwealth Libraries. “They wanted to open during Phase 1 of yellow with pickup (only),” Vandenbosch said, noting that the service began on June 8. “They call it a framework of opening libraries. In the third phase of yellow, we should be able to open with a very limited number of patrons and with social distancing. (The pickup service is) the forerunner for us to be open.” She said that staff members have been visiting the library during the weeks since it closed in March. “Our library was one of the few of the Lancaster libraries that actually took books back in our deposit,” she said, noting that no fines have accrued during the shutdown. “We were in cleaning books and shelving them.” Audiobooks and e-books have been available to patrons during the stay-at-home order through https://lancasterlibraries.over drive.com and http://online.lan casterlibraries.org. The library also offers Storytime with Mrs. Amanda on its Facebook page at 11 a.m. on Fridays. To view the story time programs, readers may search for “Moores Memorial Library” on Facebook and choose Videos. Vandenbosch is excited for the day when the library building will be open. “I can’t wait,” she said. “I miss the patrons so much. I miss the kids playing. I’m happy we are open in some form, and I appreciate the patrons’ patience. It’s all new to us.”

This 20-minute Zoomsical features a cast of 20 actors, ranging from age 8 to adults. Many of the actors are local children from Hempfield, Penn Manor, and various other school districts, including some in Lebanon and York. However, actress Reagan McCartney, who plays Swampy, joins from Arkansas, and college student Seth Jerabek, who plays Zombie King, is currently in Ohio. The cast uses Zoom to rehearse. Singing and dancing together is a challenge, so the big song and dance numbers will be prerecorded. The acting will be done together over a Zoom meeting. Because of the technical challenges, the performance will be prerecorded so the livestream at showtime can go off without a hitch. Though the musical is only 20 minutes long, the full presentation will be a bit longer as it will include a curtain speech by Red Accordion owner and show director Jen Felty as well as some cast interviews.
