Graham from pg 1 Lindsay Graham will perform at Emmaus Road Cafe, 1886 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Saturday, June 15. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the music will begin at 7:30 p.m. Graham is a singer-songwriter from Lancaster. After many lifechanging experiences, she re-committed her life to God and began to focus on living her life for His glory. In the summer of 2013, Graham started working on her debut album, “Break Free.” At that time she had written only two songs, and by the time of the album’s completion in May 2014 she had a repertoire of 15 original songs. Her goal is to show others the love and mercy of Jesus Christ through her music and testimony. Graham is involved in many ministries. She is a worship leader for Celebrate Recovery, Wesley UMC and, most recently, LiveWell Ministries, and she is on the worship team for Change of Pace South. Graham also leads a small group Bible study called “Beautifully His” for girls and young women ages 18 to 30. Admission to the event is free. Emmaus Road Cafe offers coffee beverages, Italian sodas and baked goods for sale. The cafe is located at 1886 Lincoln Highway East in Lancaster. Emmaus Road Cafe can be contacted via email at emmausroadcafe@gmail.com or at 717-478-3672. Pictured on front: Lindsay Graham will perform at Emmaus Road Cafe in Lancaster on Saturday, June 15.

Camps from pg 1 held at the church on Monday, July 29, through Wednesday, July 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. each evening. The softball camp will be run by Emily Houck, a graduate of Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) and Eastern University in Wayne, who played softball at both schools. Her sister, Amanda Houck, who is also a PVHS graduate and who was an All-American pitcher for West Chester

University, will join her in running the camp this year. According to Doug, last year’s basic skills softball camp attracted 50 girls. “We are hoping for 60 this year,” said Doug, who encouraged campers to bring their own gloves and any other equipment they may have. The volleyball camp will focus on fundamentals and will be taught by collegiate-level players Miranda and Mickayla

Pancake & Sausage Breakfast

Kauffman, who both graduated from Octorara Area High School and played volleyball at Eastern University. Knee pads are recommended for the camp but are not required. Doug noted that 12 students took part in the 2018 volleyball camp, but he is hoping to see 20 youths at this year’s camp. Pequea Baptist’s interest in teaching sports to children began in 2010 when the church began running an Upward Basketball program. Biblical principles and lessons are incorporated into the camp curriculums. Doug encouraged students of all skill levels to take part in the camps. “At both camps, we evaluate skill levels, and we separate those who are just beginning and focus on fundamentals. We take the more advanced players and focus on more advanced skills,” he said.

“We can offer something for everybody. We are open to anyone who wants to get better at their game no matter where they are in skill level.” Doug added that the camps have been productive for both students and coaches. “We are thrilled to help the (students) improve their skills and to get better as coaches as we instruct,” he said. Girls who wish to take part in the True Swing camp are asked to register by Sunday, June 23. Boys and girls who wish to participate in the True Serve camp are asked to register by Sunday, July 28. A registration fee is required to attend each camp. Readers may register at www.fbcpequea.org. Readers who have questions may email the church at office@f bcpequea.org or call 717-442-4403.

The Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) high school Quiz Bowl team recently won this year’s Brainbusters competition against Elizabethtown. The team includes coach Dan Dietzel and students Toby Palmer, Jacob Cairns, Benjamin Jessep, and Josiah Esch. Students from the LMS Lancaster and Hershey campuses were on the team to take part in the Lancaster/ Lebanon competition. “It felt so good to win this year!” said team captain Jacob Cairns, Class of 2019. “We had lost two years ago, and so this win as a senior was really great. It was such a fun group of teammates.” “I am so proud of our team,” shared Dietzel, who is a retired Lancaster Mennonite English and Bible teacher. “Since we are a small school and team - no JV or alternates like the other schools we were the underdogs. Our team rallied and pulled together for this win. We focused on three things: Memory; Sense or Discernment, (such as) knowing when to buzz in early or not too late; and Dexterity, being quick on the trigger. It secured us the win.” Interestingly, the coach from the Elizabethtown team, Tim Speigle, is a Lancaster Mennonite graduate and was taught by Dietzel. The Lancaster Mennonite team went to the National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) Quiz Bowl Tournament in Atlanta from May 24 to 26. This was the third year that the

team has gone to nationals. One way to qualify for nationals is taking part in weekend tournaments with question packets supplied by NAQT that are timed and answered by the competing teams, with the top 10 percent from each team qualifying. Another way is through the league ranking; Lancaster Mennonite qualified for nationals by being ranked fourth in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. At nationals, the team ranked 232nd in the nation out of 336 teams. Additionally, Cairns, the only senior on the team, is ranked in the top 100 nationally, with his official ranking being 83rd out of more than 1,600 players at the tournament. In addition to the high school team, Lancaster Mennonite’s fifth-grade Quiz Bowl team was the runner-up in Brainbusters against Elizabethtown. Students Hasset Tesfaye, Ryan Brenneman, Nina Leiss, and Joshua Reinford represented Lancaster Mennonite’s Hershey, Locust Grove, and New Danville campuses. Pictured on front: Lancaster Mennonite School’s high school Quiz Bowl team, including (from left) coach Dan Dietzel and students Toby Palmer, Jacob Cairns, Benjamin Jessep, and Josiah Esch, recently won the Brainbusters competition against Elizabethtown. The team also qualified for the National Quiz Bowl Tournament.

“All artmaking is valid, even cartooning,” Stepenaski said. A suggested donation has been set to attend each open studio. Openings are still available in the three art camps being offered this summer. A cost has been set for each camp, with separate prices for full-day and half-day attendance. Some camps will have an additional fee to cover the cost of materials. “Let’s Make Sense of Art” will be held on Monday, June 24, to Friday, June 28, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Children age 7 and older are invited to attend all day or just half-days. Instructors Sam and Kate Mylin will introduce the basics of art and the creative process. Professional painter Carol S. Herr will lead “Painting Camp for Creative Kids” for youths ages 10 to 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, July 8, to Friday, July 12. Students will explore color in a variety of painting mediums with varied subjects, including landscape, still life, portraiture, and abstract design. They will learn to express themselves in color and art. “A Brush With Nature - Drawing, Painting, and Clay Camp” will be offered to students ages 10 to 16 by professional instructor Carol H. Dale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, July 22, to Thursday, July 25. During the class, students will sketch outdoors and draw inspiration from nature, and they will also create nature-themed art in the studio. The LCAA is a nonprofit organization that welcomes new members who have an interest in exhibiting artwork or supporting the arts. Classes are available throughout the year and are open to members and nonmembers alike. The gallery is open year-round on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. For more information or to register for classes, readers may visit www.lcaaonline.org or contact the gallery at 717-687-7061 or lcaanews@yahoo.com.
