Artists In Friends To Exhibit At Library hen Anne Treadwell founded a group for artists at Garden Spot Village (GSV), she wanted to make sure the members would be able to exhibit their creations for sale, but also donate a percentage of those sales to local organizations. What began with a show in the Sycamore Springs clubhouse, with donations to the GSV Benevolent Fund, has blossomed into regular exhibits this summer at the ELANCO Library. Now, Artists in Friends, as the group is called, will extend its reach into Pequea Valley when it holds a one-day show at the Intercourse Library, 31 Center St., Intercourse, on Saturday, June 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The group will donate 20% of sales from that show to the Intercourse Library. Group member Evelyn Hershey is looking forward to displaying her
W
pottery at the venue. “I don’t do many shows, so this will be a new experience,” said Hershey, who likes to create small items such as tealight holders with an earthenware pottery look. She also makes mugs and vases. “Some things I glaze, but a lot of (my work) is unglazed because I like the earthenware look,” she said, comparing the style to old-fashioned redware. Pixie Boswell likes to repurpose items into new jewelry. “I make earrings out of old, vintage buttons,” she said. “I get them from anybody who has old buttons they don’t want,” she explained, adding that because she has so many buttons to work with, no two pairs are ever alike. “Some are whimsical and dangly, and others are studs,” she said. Cheryl Krapf will show her crossstitched items. “I lead the crossstitch group at GSV,” she said. “We have a lot of nice pictures with Amish themes, so I think we will show some of those,” she said.

Low-Grade Trail is located between Upper Valley Road and Valley Run, which measures about 5 miles. “Our trailhead will be located on White Oak Road. The township plans to grade and surface the trail either with gravel and/or asphalt,” Weagley said, noting the project is strongly supported by supervisors Gene Lammey, Bob Newlin and Jeff Priddy. “We want to put a small parking lot and an access path and some benches (at the trailhead),” Weagley noted. “We have the tech department at Octorara High School making some benches. We will do landscaping and construct a pergola, a small structure with a roof to protect (people) from the elements, and (add) signage.” He said grants will be used to
The Enola Low-Grade Trail follows the right-of-way of the old Atglen and Susquehanna Branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad, which linked Atglen with the Harrisburg area. “Basically, the trail is an old freight train line that goes from Atglen to the Susquehanna River. That section is now being developed into a trail for hiking, walking and biking,” Weagley explained. “We are part of that trail that has not been developed as yet. About two-thirds of the trail is mostly done, and by that I mean the surfacing, (the addition of) benches and amenities.” The trail runs through several townships and boroughs, and each municipality is in charge of its own section. Weagley said that the communities the trail goes through have taken ownership of the property. “There was some reluctance initially about who is going to maintain it and about property damage or vandalism,” he said, “but what has happened is that while some of that occurs, the public polices the trail and cares for it. Communities are invested in it. It is a really nice thing.” He said the Enola LowGrade Trail is ideal for people of all abilities. “There is minimal elevation changes,” he

beginning June 25. All performances will start at 6:30 p.m. The amphitheater is located within the nature preserve at 151 Precision Ave., Strasburg. “Nothing welcomes summer quite like the sound of music in the park, and we are so excited to see the community bring their blankets and lawn chairs to relax and enjoy our great lineup this year,” said Patti Creighton, concert committee member. “One of my favorite features of our concert series is
the wide age range of audience members it draws. I love seeing children dancing on the grassy hill with their families, adult fans arriving early to see their favorite band, and groups of seniors laughing and chatting together, enjoying the perfect summer combination of nature and good music.” Each year, the Strasburg Community Parks Foundation strives to create a lineup featuring a variety of artists and genres.

A junior program for dancers ages 5 to 8 will be expanding to introduce that age group to all the genres of dance Cavod offers. it is that it’s a neat exercise. You can sort of expand your ideas,” she shared. “A lot of times I will do one that size before I do a big painting as a study - to get a feel for composition or the colors you want to use.” Founded in 1936, the LCAA supports the visual arts through exhibitions, classes, workshops and special programs. “We are the oldest art association in Lancaster County and have over 200 members,” said Keller. “Until we moved to Strasburg over 20 years ago, the association was centered on Vine Street in downtown Lancaster. We moved to Strasburg in 1998. We have a variety of classes for adults and also children’s summer camps and activities. It is one of the few places artists of all levels can show their works and also sell them if they wish.” The LCAA building consists of a pottery room, the main gallery and the Steinmetz Gallery, named for one of the founding members. “We have about 10 art shows a year. Some are themed shows, and some are membership shows,” Keller said. “There are a lot of classes and special programs. We have a ladies’ critique group, (where people can get) help with their work and get good ideas.” She encourages the community to visit the LCAA during the upcoming anniversary exhibit. “We have all kinds of things that appeal to everyone who is artistic,” Keller added. “What we hope is that people will understand what our mission is - to promote the arts.” For more information about the LCAA or the upcoming exhibit, visit www.lcaaonline.org or www.facebook.com/Lancaster CountyArtAssociation or call 717-687-7061.

A Safe Place … In Florida BY ANN MEAD ASH
House of His Creation (HOHC) is a ministry that has worked for nearly 50 years to affirm life by providing women with a place to heal and grow through maternity and after. HOHC currently oversees a maternity home at 301 N. Broad St., Lititz. The ministry will soon be expanding its reach by opening a new home in Pensacola, Fla., that will offer a safe haven to teenage girls who have been victims of human trafficking. “We are not rescuing. We are protecting,” said Matthew Neff, director of HOHC. In 2018, when the ministry was briefly called Family of Restoration Ministries (FORM), its location at the Abundant Living Ministries campus in northern Lititz was

being used for dual purposes. “We made the decision preCOVID to just use the apartments (at the campus) for ministry,” said Matt, who noted that the apartments filled quickly with women leaving abusive situations. The location was good for that purpose, but for the women living in the adjacent maternity home who needed transportation for employment, training, and other services, it was less than ideal. To remedy the situation, HOHC relocated to Lititz and began exploring ways it could help women escaping abuse or human trafficking. HOHC staff members discovered that in Florida, they could provide a safe, healing environment for teenagers. Now, house parents Matt and his wife, Callie, are preparing to move to the new location. On Sunday, June 26, a drop-in event will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. at the maternity home to give friends of the ministry a chance to say, goodbye to the couple. Parking will be available at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, located across the street from the home. As a division of HOHC, 685, as the house in Florida
will be called, will offer a place for girls who have been rescued from human trafficking. “We will offer a safe pause where she can go to bed and feel safe and try to establish what normal looks like going forward,” said Matt, who noted that 685 will not focus
on trafficking issues. “There are plenty of people doing a fine job raising awareness (about human trafficking),” said Matt. “Our focus will be holistic family healing and a knowledge of being safe and trying to become accustomed to that.” See HOHC pg 13

Make It With Wool Contest Announced
HOHC from pg 12 Although HOHC in Lititz provides housing for women who are age 18 and older, Callie noted that the original focus of the ministry was on younger girls. “We are going back to serving minors for the safe home,” said Callie. “We have all these years of experience to utilize,” she said. Back in Lititz, program director Michelle Gibbs will continue to work with women in the maternity program while also striving to build up the aftercare program for new mothers who need further
support both at the home and in the community. “Lititz will remain our office and point of contact,” said Callie, noting that HOHC’s website www.hohc.org - will still cover both ministries. Matt noted that while the new facility will need to fundraise, response to the growth of the ministry has been positive. “The reception has been amazing,” he said. “(There has been an) outpouring of people who have been financially supportive and (willing to) to volunteer.”
