SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

Paradise Elementary Loves Its PTO n Sunday, May 2, the day before the beginning of Teacher Appreciation Week, members of the Paradise PTO invited the school community to come to the school and write uplifting and grateful messages in colored chalk on the sidewalk outside the entrance of the school. “When the staff came in for Teacher Appreciation Week, that is what they saw,” reported Rick Esche, Paradise Elementary School principal. According to Esche, such positive activity is consistent with the PTO, officers of which are president Christy Fieldsa, vice president Katie Knaub, and treasurers Shannon and Broc Passmore. “They keep a nice presence, and they constantly support us,” said Esche, who noted that on Fridays, members of the PTO take orders and pick up food for the school staff from local restaurants. The service

is a boost for both the teachers and the nearby eateries. Esche noted that the PTO found many ways to be supportive during the 2020-21 school year. “The big thing is that even though they can’t be here in the building, their presence is greatly felt,” he shared. Kindergarten learning facilitator Sara Tomison noted that the Pequea Valley community has always been supportive, but the PTO went above and beyond in a challenging year. “‘Thank you’ doesn’t begin to cover the depth of our gratitude for everything they’ve done to help us feel supported and appreciated,” she said. “We’re so very grateful.” Esche lauded the way the PTO and the school collaborate, mentioning that the officers meet regularly with assistant principal Jodi Houck, as well as second-grade learning facilitator Christy Brown and first-grade learning facilitator Bethany Weismandel.

Local Magician Receives Prestigious Award BY ANN MEAD ASH

Asked how it feels to receive the Merlin Award, known as the most prestigious award in magic, given by the International Magicians Society (IMS), Brett Myers of the Magic and

Wonder Theater in Paradise was characteristically modest. “As a kid, I looked up to magicians I saw on television … David Copperfield, Siegfried & Roy, or Penn and Teller and then to have won an award they have won is extremely humbling.” Myers was

quick to credit all those involved in his show, “Worlds of Wonder,” for which he won in the category of Best Magic and Variety Show. “(The award is) something that recognizes the hours of work our team has poured into creating wonder for audiences that visit this theater,” he said. Myers submitted a video to the international competition at the end of 2020 after being encouraged by friends. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all submissions and awards were done virtually. “After reviewing all the entries, they selected ours as the best,” said Myers, who added that he was notified of the award in February by IMS president and founder Tony Hassini.

More than 40 years ago, Ken McCrea’s father suddenly decided to retire, sell his home, and travel. “I had to rush home that weekend and let (my family) know of anything I wanted to keep,” McCrea recalled, adding that he quickly left graduate school at Purdue University to return to Reamstown. During that visit, McCrea found his mother’s collection of old family photographs. “I thought it would be neat to arrange them into a family tree,” said McCrea, who noted that the idea was the beginning of a lifelong obsession with genealogy. McCrea said that the internet has been a boon to searching for one’s ancestry, but he warned would-be researchers to beware of errors. “You have to go back to the original sources and reconfirm,” he stated. “Don’t just accept something as fact.” The number of Germans arriving in Pennsylvania began to increase around 1715, according to McCrea. “By 1727, leaders in Philadelphia noticed (the increase) and started tracking them,” said McCrea, who noted northern parts of Lancaster County may be up to 90% German and Swiss. Because German lineage is common in the area, McCrea offered tips specific to searching that history. “About the 1820s, it became popular for people of German ancestry to translate names (to English),” he said. As an example, McCrea noted that the name Zimmerman was often translated to Carpenter. He also pointed out that many family members have similar names because of the tradition of naming the first son after his father’s father. “The second son is often named for his mother’s father,” said McCrea, who stated that within a few generations as many as 50 cousins might share the same name. “That really does make genealogy (research) difficult, especially early on,” he said. McCrea said that researching family members who came to America by ship is easier if the ancestor arrived after 1820, when the federal government began keeping lists of passengers for immigration purposes. “You might get an age, occupation, and a country,” shared McCrea, who said that lists created in the 1900s might include the name of the person the passenger was coming to visit and maybe a birth date. county and the community. Cutler explained that the program, which went live on June 11, will run for about 12 weeks. On a regular basis, LCCF will choose random participants to receive $500 to invest in a cause or project that is important to them. “It may be something they shared in their snap-

shot or something else they care about,” said Spangler. In the future, the organization hopes to make the site even more interactive so that participants can communicate directly with each other. Cutler explained that it is a mission of LCCF to help achieve goals that are on the hearts of the people in Lancaster County. “We are connecting and investing in things people care about so those things can continue in the long term,” she said, noting that the project encourages reflection on things that are really important to people. “Our role is coming alongside people to help support their passions,” she explained. Spangler noted that the project takes a different approach to fostering connection. “ W hat’s unique about Snapshot is that we’re focusing on the ways that we care about the community,” he said. “It’s not just my interests, but these are the things I want to sustain.

That’s a stronger way to start relationships.” He stated that he has been impressed by the positive way community members have reacted to Lancaster Snapshot. “(It keeps me hopeful) when people say, ‘I would love to connect with the community,’” he said.

McCrea’s interest in his own ancestry led him to work with the Adamstown Area Genealogy Group, which currently meets virtually on the second Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. McCrea said the group has been meeting for about five years to discuss related topics or research an

attendee’s family tree. To learn more about the group, please visit www.adamstownarea library.org and click on events. Look for “Genealogy Group and Watch Party” on the calendar for more information or call the library at 717-484-4200.

Those who wish to take part may visit www.lancaster snapshot.com, where they will be asked to submit answers to up to five questions using photographs. Spangler noted that participants may answer as few or as many questions as they wish. The questions are: Where do you live? What’s your favorite spot in Lancaster County? What’s one of your favorite things or possessions? What keeps you hopeful? What’s something you want to last forever? “The idea was to keep the questions open to get a varying degree of interpretation,” said Spangler, who noted there is space for a short caption. “There is no one way to answer these questions.” Participants will be able to visit the site, which includes a map of the county, to see their answers along with the answers of other participants. “You can zoom in (on a map) to see people’s entries,” explained Spangler, who noted that place specificity was important to see not only faces, but where people are in the

New Acts Added To Concert Series BY ANN MEAD ASH

As the New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP) returns to the park for 2021, organizers have lined up more than 20 concerts, with six of the musical acts being new to the park venue or returning after many years. Performances will be held three times per week in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, located in the 400 block of Jackson Street in New Holland. Concerts will begin at 7 p.m., with the exception of the Saturday, Aug. 21, concert, which will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Funds to help support NHSAP are raised by the annual arts and crafts show sponsored by the organization. This year’s show will be held in the park on Saturday, June 26, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sue Noll, secretary/treasurer for NHSAP, said organizers have lined up more than 60 vendors for the rain-or-shine event. Among the vendors will be those selling jewelry, handcarved bowls and rustic home furnishings, handthrown pottery, paper crafts, wall art, on-site caricatures, gourd birdhouses, See NHSAP pg 6

Myers explained that the show was chosen for manipulation talents. “There is a part of the act where I do sleight of hand,” he said. “It’s very difficult and showcases the magician’s skill. It requires decades of mastery and experience.” The specific part of the act Myers referred to involves silk manipulation with many brightly colored handkerchiefs appearing and disappearing. “The color makes it difficult to conceal (the handkerchiefs),” Myers explained. “Worlds of Wonder,” which is now playing at the theater, 3065 Lincoln Highway, Paradise, involves the Magic and Wonder cast taking audiences to different worlds, including visiting the circus, adventures with pirates, Alice in Wonderland, and the world of the 1980s. “The show has a patriotic ending where we remember the most wonderful place that we live in a tribute to those who have sacrificed so much to make those freedoms possible,” said Myers.

The theater is currently open up to five days per week, and Myers noted that eventually he would like to present up to 10 shows weekly. “We were in the process of working on launching a second show in Lancaster last year,” said Myers, who said that a comedy, music, and variety show was planned and postponed because of COVID-19 restrictions. “We will have more (entertainment) experiences, including (types of shows) that Lancaster County hasn’t seen,” said Myers, adding that the size and flavor of the show is unique to the area. Myers grew up in Chambersburg, but he and his family have lived in Lancaster for more than a decade. “We call this home,” said Myers, who has also performed in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. and put together the details of the current Magic and Wonder show in Branson, Mo. Lindsay Arbutina, speech and language pathologist, agreed with Esche. “We’ve all had to get creative this school year, our PTO did an amazing job of thinking outside the box to find ways to shower the school employees with treats, thoughtful notes, and an abundance of generosity,” she said. Among the many other PTO activities were staff shout-outs on Facebook, sponsored virtual field trips, book bingo, mask decorating, and restaurant fundraisers. Esche noted that during a school year of challenges, the PTO members were undaunted. “(I was impressed with) the way they work together and problem solve,” he said, adding that the group was willing to jump in and try new things when the traditional way did not meet COVID-19 safety standards. “(They said), ‘Here’s how we can overcome that and make it work this year,’” recalled Esche, who stated that few events were canceled because the PTO was able to redesign them instead. “We were able to have interaction with the community in a safe and socially distanced way,” he said, adding that some events became virtual, others were turned into

Mervin is 22 years old, but his youthful exuberance gives one the impression that he is younger. As a student at Sunny Sunbeam, one of seven centers in Lancaster and Lebanon counties that serve members of the Plain community with special needs, Mervin is quick to greet a visitor and talk about the activities he enjoys up to three days a week. He points out the stickers he puts on boxes of clothespins that the students package for Georgetown Sales. He says his favorite job to do outside is to mow the lawn behind the workshop. Amateur Radio Field Day Posted Members of the Red Rose Repeater Association will participate in the national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise on Saturday and Sunday, June 26 and 27, at 773 County Line Road, Gap. This event is open to the public, and the club particularly recommends stopping by on Saturday between 2 and 6 p.m. The event will close by 2 p.m. on Sunday. For more than 100 years, amateur radio - also called ham radio - has allowed persons from all walks of life to experiment with electronics and communications techniques, as well as provide a free public service to their communities during a disaster or emergency, all without needing a cellphone or the internet. Through amateur radio, people can explore electronics, physics, meteorology, and numerous other areas of science. Field Day demonstrates ham radio’s ability to create reliable communications independent of commercial networks, under adverse conditions from almost anywhere. Since 1933, amateur radio operators across North America have established temporary radio stations in public locations during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of amateur radio. In 2019, more than 35,000 people from thousands of locations participated in Field Day; last year, participants numbered almost 19,000. Anyone may become a licensed amateur radio operator. There are more than 725,000 licensed ham radio operations in the United States ranging in age from 9 to 102. For more information about Field Day or amateur radio, visit www.w3rrr.org or visit www.arrl.org/what-is -ham-radio.

The Factory Ministries will hold a food collection on Friday, June 25, from 9 a.m. to noon. Specific needs are Ritz and saltine crackers, pizza sauce, spaghetti sauce, gravy and tortilla chips. Donated food items will go to community members in need.

They say that pitching and good defense wins ballgames. Springs, claiming the District Three Class 3A championship with a 2-1 victory at Millersville University’s Seaber Stadium. The win did not come easily as Bermudian Springs junior Tori Murren was nearly perfect for the first five innings. “She was keeping us off balance - in and out, up and down,” Pequea head coach Doug High explained. “We were swinging at some marginal pitches in key situations and not making good contact.” Murren, who finished with seven strikeouts and no walks while allowing only three hits, drove in the Eagles’ lone run herself in the top of the sixth inning. The three hits she did allow were long hits - all in the sixth inning. Hailey Yothers led off with a triple. Olivia Ammon doubled to drive her in. Madison Clark also doubled to drive in the eventual winning run. Olivia Ammon struck out five and allowed five hits. She was able to work out of trouble twice, including the first inning where she recorded two of her strikeouts. She allowed a leadoff walk followed by a Hannah Chenault single before settling down to record to strikeouts and getting a third out on a pop up. In the fourth, the Eagles, who had reached the district title game by knocking off top-seeded Trinity in the semis, threatened

again. A single and a sacrifice bunt put a Springs runner in scoring position. But a line drive to Clark. The second baseman promptly turned it into an inning-ending double play. “It was a great team effort,” High said. “They are playing well and finding ways to get it done.”

The Braves headed into the PIAA Class 3A state playoffs with an opening-round game on Monday, June 7. The offense came through on a much greater scale with plenty of run support for Olivia Ammon’s dominant pitching as Pequea defeated Swenson Academy 100 at Millersville University. See Sports pg 11

Defense? Well, Ammon’s teammates only needed to make three plays. The Braves’ right hander struck out 15 Swenson batters. The Braves infielders made three plays and the offense made sure that 18 outs was all their pitcher would need when Yothers drove in her second run of the game, invoking the 10-run mercy rule. “She’s doing a great job in the circle,” High commented. “We score a couple of runs for her and we’re in good shape. She keeps us in games.” Emily Ammon had had four hits in the game, including an RBI double. She and Camryn Bailey also had two RBI’s each. Abby Tobelmann had three hits as did Hailey Yothers. Meanwhile, Central Columbia, the runner up from District Four, blanked District Eleven champ Palmerton 2-0 on Monday, setting up a quarterfinals round game at Pine Grove High School against the Braves where a win would put the Braves into the PIAA semis for the first time in program history. “Everyone wants to keep going and finish what we started,” High said. “We’re also getting great leadership from our seniors. That’s always great to see.” Photo by Mark Palczewski The Braves improved to l7-5 and their win over Swenson Alayna Herr crosses the plate with the winning run in Pequea marked their 11th in their last Valley’s 2-1, District Three championship victory over Bermudian Springs on June 3. 12 games.

Veritas Academy, a preschool through 12th-grade classical Christian school, has announced that it won the bid to purchase its building, situated at 26 Hillcrest Ave., Leola. The school has been the largest tenant in the Hillcrest Avenue property for nearly 20 years. Upper Leacock Township sold the facility, which was originally the Leola Elementary School, via public auction on April 27. The school community rallied over the past several months to raise the necessary funds to purchase the property, with hopes to preserve the classroom and outdoor spaces that students, parents, and teachers have grown to love over the years.

Hand-painted murals and crafted decor throughout the building have added special touches that enhance the school’s uniquely themed curriculum. The courtyard and expansive back field have provided ideal spaces for both learning and fun. Parents, staff, alumni, students, and friends of the school not only participated financially in the acquisition of the building, but also contributed in prayer for the school. Over the past two and a half decades, the school has experienced strong growth, including entering the 2021-22 school year with its highest enrollment ever, and Veritas hopes that owning this building will allow it to better serve current and future students with improved and expanded facilities for learning and extracurricular activities. Veritas hopes to establish a place that connects families with truth, beauty, and goodness for Christ’s calling. To learn more about the school, visit www.veritas academy.com.
