Retirement Parade Honors Paradise Staff Members Learners Say Goodbye To Reinhart And Johnston

THANK YOU, GROCERY STORE WORKERS! Show your thanks by... ▶

When Gov. Wolf closed schools in compliance with COVID-19 restrictions on March 13, the ending was especially abrupt for Paradise Elementary School students. “We were having teacher conferences that week, and there was no school on Friday,” recalled second-grade teacher Jennifer Everly. “So the students just never came back.” The impact of that action was especially sad for Paradise principal Beth Reinhart and Marie Johnston, who worked as multi-tier system of support coordinator for English language arts, since the two women had planned to retire at the end of the school year, each having more than 30 years of service. Everly and her colleagues wanted to do something to honor the pair, and they also wanted

Troop 20, composed of boys who reside in the Pequea Valley and Octorara Area school districts, began meeting virtually, via Zoom, when they realized the stay-at-home order of Pennsylvania’s Gov. Tom Wolf would last more than the initial two weeks. First, the troop held its elections for senior patrol leader through email. Then, under the direction of new leader and Scoutmaster Cory Peters, the Scouts began meeting online. They were invited to participate via email, which included the Zoom link and password. the retirees and teachers to have a chance to say goodbye to learners. About mid-May, a Paradise staff member made a suggestion. “We were trying to think of a way to celebrate them,” recalled Everly. “One of my colleagues came up with the idea (of holding a parade).” Everly asked Cathy Koenig, director of student services for Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), to assist with the event. The teachers also joined forces with staff members from Salisbury Elementary School, where Reinhart and Johnston had also worked, and then utilized the communication platforms they had been using to send lessons to students to invite them to take part. They planned the event for a Saturday so that parents who work during the week would be able to drive their children to the school. At 1 p.m. on May 30, Reinhart and Johnston were seated on the sidewalk in front of the Paradise Elementary main entrance. retirees. Reinhart, who worked at the school for 34 years, called the parade “very cool.” After a parent presented her with a container of butter cookies, she offered one to PVSD assistant superintendent Rich Eby when he stopped to offer congratulations. “They’re the best cookies you’ve ever had in your life,” said Reinhart, who noted she plans to do a lot of reading in the coming months. “(I am looking forward to) reading a book … lots of books … some novels … fun (books),” said Reinhart. After 32 years at Paradise, Johnston called the parade “awesome.” She is looking forward to going to the beach in both the spring and the fall. She also noted she intends to pursue interests she did not have time to explore when she was teaching. Both retirees were happy to see students they had taught in the past driving their own children, who are now students at the school, in the parade. As about 100 cars rolled by, some of them decorated for the occasion, learners and parents held signs wishing the pair well. Some read “Happy Retirement.” Others noted how much they missed all the staff at the school. A variety of gifts, including a number of flowering plants, were handed from car windows to waiting staff members. “Those two have impacted so many lives,” said Everly. “We are so happy for them (to have a chance) to say goodbye.” Paradise Elementary School is located on 20 N. Belmont Road, Paradise. The school serves area children in kindergarten through sixth grade.

Boy Scout Troop from pg 1 “This is the first time they ever had to meet virtually because there was no other option, explained Christine Zink, a member of the troop’s parent committee. “The committee members communicate by email and text, but this was all new for (the Scouts). Youth leaders in the troop, along with guidance from the adult leaders, brainstormed ways to make the meetings fun and interactive, all while continuing to work on rank requirements and merit badges. The kickoff online meeting for the troop was a scavenger hunt where participants were asked to gather a long list of items from around their homes. “We had to look for a pizza cutter, a

hammer, our Scout books, a crazy hat of some sort, a sports jersey or merchandise for a sports team, explained Scout Noah Zink, a student at Pequea Valley High School. “You had to get creative with some of the items you looked for. “The kids had fun, and they were so happy to get back together again, Christine added. “It had been a few weeks since they saw each other. “One thing I like is how easy it is to attend (Zoom meetings), added Scout Tyler Mowrey, who attends Octorara Junior-Senior High School. Since the early days of the online meetings, the Scouts have taken part in online bingo, merit badge sessions, lessons for rank

requirements and more. “One of my favorite parts was during our meetings, we would do online games like Kahoot! said Scout Jonah Zink, a student at Pequea Valley Intermediate School. “It’s a quiz game where a teacher or Scoutmaster makes a quiz about a topic he taught about that night. If you get the question right, you get points. At the end, the winner gets bragging rights. “I like the games because they’re different, noted Scout Finley Reynolds, a student at Octorara Junior-Senior High School. Some Scouts have even participated in virtual campouts offered by both the Chester County Council and the National Boy Scouts of America (BSA) organization via Facebook Live. During the sessions, Scouts learned about camping skills such as knot tying and

how to build a campfire. “They had an online video where they brought in different Scout leaders to talk about some of their experiences, Noah said. Noah and Jonah also camped out at home. “We set up a tent in our living room and ate and slept there. We treated it like a (real) campout, Noah said. “We earned a patch for the virtual campout, and (the living room campout) counted as a night in a tent. You need a

certain amount of nights in a tent to earn a camping merit badge. The Scouts plan to continue meeting virtually on Mondays at 7 p.m. as they normally would meet in person at the Penningtonville Presbyterian Church in Atglen. The online meetings will continue until the stay-at-home order is lifted and groups larger than 25 are permitted to gather. “I want to meet in person again, but I do like the online

meetings, Jonah said. The troop is also looking forward to welcoming new Scouts during meetings at the church. “The quarantine hit just as we were preparing to welcome new boys into the troop from two local Cub Scout packs - Parkesburg Pack 135 and Atglen Pack 20, Christine added. “Half of the new Scouts have not yet had an in-person experience in troop meeting.

It is the first local articulation agreement for the LCCTC that gives its graduates of specialized associates degree programs pathways to a bachelor’s degree in management. Under the agreement, EMU will accept up to 90 college credits earned in completion of an Associate in Specialized Technology (AST) toward the 120 hours required for the Bachelor of Science degree. An EMU enrollment counselor will serve as an adviser to students who plan to transfer credits earned in completion of the ASB/AST degree at LCCTC to Bachelor of Science in leadership and organizational management program. Gov. Tom Wolf proclaimed May 22, the 143rd day of the year, as 1-4-3 Day, a statewide day of kindness in honor of Pennsylvania native Fred Rogers. Rogers, best known from his beloved television series, “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” exemplified compassion and regularly used 1-4-3 as another way of saying “I love you,” with 1-4-3 representing the number of letters in each word. As the state continues to navigate the COVID-19 crisis, Wolf encouraged all Pennsylvanians to spread even more kindness, more love, and more generosity to essential workers and neighbors on 1-4-3 Day. In 2019, Pennsylvanians shared more than 17,000 acts of kindness on social media on 1-4-3 Day. This year, in particular, individuals had the opportunity to show the positive impact that neighborliness can have during more difficult times by recognizing and thanking essential workers and frontline employees through acts of kindness and appreciation. As many Pennsylvanians prepared to celebrate 14-3 Day at home, the state updated its Kindness Generator website to provide extra inspiration. The website, https://143day.dced .pa.gov/, includes a Kindness Tracker, a tally of all the great deeds Pennsylvanians did throughout the day, which are counted by using the hashtag #143DayinPA. To join the conversation, readers may follow visitPA on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram and use #143DayInPA to keep up with all the good deeds and acts of kindness.

the Top 200 Healthiest Banks. Additional details about the survey are available at www.Deposit Accounts.com. Lori A. Maley, CPA, president and CEO of the Bank of Bird-In-Hand, attributed the high rating to the strong reception from the local community since it opened its doors in December 2013. Lancaster County and western Chester County with a focus on agricultural, small business and consumer lending. Its main branch and corporate headquarters is located at 309 N. The bank has also established a mobile branch, which has a schedule of hours of operation at nine locations

in Lancaster and Chester counties. The unit, which is a 29-foot-long full-service mobile bank on wheels, has a built-in ATM, a walk-up customer service window and room inside for customer service representatives to open accounts and transact business. Students take turns helping to mow the grass and tending the flower beds in the yard. Presently, organizers of the auction report that the parents and scholars really miss the centers. The closing has made it harder for the parents, and the students miss being out of the home with other people. “The special adults cannot wait until they may go back (to the centers),” reported auction organizer Ben Kauffman. Readers who would like to donate items to the sale may call 717-768-8497, 717-442-4144, or 717-354-2380. The auction number on the day of the sale will be 717-983-8415.

age from 14 to 76. A staff of 35 caregivers works with the students. All the centers were closed in March under COVID-19 restrictions, but organizers of the centers hope to reopen them in the late summer or fall. To help support the centers, organizers hold a yearly auction. This year’s auction will be the 15th annual benefit, and it will be held on Monday, July 6, at Fisher’s Quality Dairy Sales, 3304 B Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks. The auction will begin at 11 a.m., but a variety of food items will be offered for sale beginning at 5:30 a.m. Quilts will be sold beginning at 4 p.m. Among the items that have been gathered for the auction are flowers and plants, toys, and chests. Large specialty items, including swing sets, sheds, and carriages, will be sold beginning at 6 p.m. Food that will be available for purchase at the auction includes breakfast items such as egg sandwiches, doughnuts, breakfast logs, and coffee. Lunch items will include cheesesteak sandwiches, barbecued chicken and ribs, sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, fruit cups, french fries, and soft pretzels. Ice cream, fry pies, and baked goods will be on the dessert menu. Food may be eaten on-site or taken out. The centers offer a variety of activities for students. At Sunny Sunbeam, located in Georgetown, the students gather three days a week from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. each day. Guided by up to five teachers, the students begin their days with devotions and then spend time in song. They make keychains and rolled-candy dolls. They also assemble hygiene kits for Mennonite Central Committee, and newspaper is torn up to create animal bedding. During news time, any of the students can share news from home, and students often choose to tell about new babies and new puppies. Lessons, which include reading, flash cards, telling time, memory verses, money, and German, are also on the agenda to help students retain what they have learned at school. Students bring their lunch two days a week, but one day a week a teacher makes

As Lancaster County moves to the yellow phase, some public libraries will reopen with limited services, consistent with recommendations from the Pennsylvania Office of Commonwealth Libraries. Most county public libraries will start lending print materials, CDs, and DVDs. The health and safety of patrons and staff are of highest importance to the public libraries in Lancaster County; therefore, not all services will be available. A few Lancaster County public libraries will remain closed until they can more safely accommodate the public and staff in their spaces. Readers should contact their local library to find out what services they will offer. The decision has been made to cancel all hold requests for all library patrons of Lancaster County’s public libraries. Due to the limitations of the library database software, there was no easy way to fulfill patron holds while allowing for the safe and timely handling of library materials. Other services, like public use computers and in-person programming, will be available again once they can be provided safely and within CDC guidelines. Strict procedures for the safe handling and quarantining of returned library items will be in place before print materials, CDs, and DVDs can be checked out to the public again. Many libraries will use a curbside delivery or pickup system to convey items to their patrons while maintaining recommended social distancing. The public is encouraged to contact their local library to find out what services will be available in their area. Libraries have remained open for business online throughout the stay-at-home order by expanding access to library cards, bolstering digital content, and offering virtual programming. However, library personnel are eager to get back to lending paper books and providing other in-person services in a way that is safe and trustworthy. Readers may visit https://lan casterlibraries.org for a list of public libraries in Lancaster and information on how to contact local libraries and check social media channels such as Facebook and Instagram for ongoing updates.

Virtual “Walk Run For Life” Raises Funds Align Life Ministries (formerly Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services) concluded its 34th annual Walk Run for Life on May 9. More than 200 registered individuals participated in the virtual event and either walked, ran a 5K, or did another form of fun activity to support the event. So far, more than $235,000 has been raised toward the $255,000 goal, and donations and pledges are still being processed. These funds help the ministry provide immediate life-sustaining services to families in need. The organization recently delivered essential baby supplies to a young mother of an infant, and then she enrolled in virtual parenting classes with her client advocate. Next year’s Walk Run for Life will take place on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at The Junction Center in Manheim. Readers may visit www.face book.com/alignlifeministries to view event photos and www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9 rabr-vHCI&t=9s to view the closing video. and efficient in getting food to families in need, while practicing social distancing. Keeping up with the increase in demand while navigating the disruptions in the food supply chain has been the greatest challenge. However, with any challenge, there is an opportunity for innovation. In early May, the CPFB began distributing meals from Operation BBQ Relief. This endeavor turns donated food that comes in restaurant-size packaging into family-friendly frozen meals for charitable distribution. Each frozen container has a complete ready-to-eat meal, including healthy protein, vegetables, and another side dish for a family of four. The meals go easily from the freezer to the oven to the dinner table. The CPFB has a long-standing partnership with the agriculture community. The CPFB has signed on to a new U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) program to rescue arrange for people in need to receive food that would otherwise be dumped or turned over in the field. Through the USDA’s Farmers to Families program, the CPFB will work with several local farmers including Lancaster Farm Fresh, a co-op of local farmers in and around Lancaster County, and Brian Campbell Farms in Bloomsburg to get fresh fruits, vegetables, pork, chicken, dairy products, and eggs to the people

CPFB serves. The USDA buys the food from farms and pays a distributor to put it together into neatly packaged boxes to be delivered to CPFB’s partner agencies for distribution. Pennsylvania was awarded $255,373, from the USDA’s Farm to Food Bank Program. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture will distribute to the CPFB to reimburse farmers for costs associated with harvesting, packing, processing, and distributing donated agricultural surplus. The funding will pay for 200,000 pounds of cheese that will be distributed to food banks statewide. The Farm to Food Bank Program was created in the 2018 federal Farm Bill and was modeled after the Pennsylvania Agricultural Surplus System (PASS). Pennsylvania’s funds are equitably distributed through the CPFB and its 13 subcontractors to procure surplus agricultural products from Pennsylvania farmers and food processors. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s $1.5 million Pennsylvania Agricultural Surplus System serves as a match for the federal Farm to Food Bank Program. For more information on what the CPFB is doing to help families in need, readers may contact Jennifer Sands at 570-768-0921 or jsands@centralpafoodbank.org. Since mid-March, volunteers have given thousands of hours to pack 120,000 crisis response boxes. In April, CPFB served nearly 175,000 people across 27 counties and distributed more than 44% more food than it did during April 2019.
