Making Math Fun By Ann Mead Ash
Before Kayley Gates taught fifth- and sixth-grade math classes at Salisbury Elementary School, she taught first grade in another district. When her firstgrade students in the other district were invited to take part in a carnival that involved a math unit being completed by older elementary school students, Gates tucked the idea away for future use. This spring, when it was time for Gates’ 45 math students to complete a unit on statistics, she decided the carnival idea would be a great way to wrap up the lessons. “We called it our Statistics Carnival,” said Gates, who divided her students into groups and assigned 13 games
for them to run at the carnival, which was held May 9. Half the students ran the games in the morning, and half ran them in the afternoon. “We invited the kindergartners as an end-of-year celebration for them to come and play the games,” said Gates. About 50 kindergartners divided into three classes attended the carnival one class at a time. For each of the assigned games, the math students were required to create the rules and devise ways to record the data. Among the activities were a bean bag toss and a pick-a-duck game. “(For the bean bag game), the kindergartners threw (the bags) into the hole to score points, and the fifth- and sixth- Salisbury Elementary School students in Kayley Gates’ fifth- and sixth-grade math classes graders recorded the number of held a carnival for kindergartners at the school on May 9. The older students gathered See Statistics Carnival pg 2 data from the carnival that they used to complete a statistics unit.

of the data and the range of the data,” said Gates, who added that she was pleased with the students’ responses to the unit. “It was a real-world application of statistics,” said Gates, who noted sometimes it is hard for students to see how a concept relates their lives. “Some of them even said, ‘Now when I go to a carnival, I know which games I might be more likely to win or which ones might not be worth spending the money,’” reported Gates. Gates enjoyed seeing the kindergartners and older students interact at the carnival. “All of the students were so engaged,” she said, adding that kindergartners told her they were looking forward to running the carnival when they were older because they were so excited about it. The fifth-grade students also buzzed to each other about which games they looked forward to running next year. According to Gates, the unit taught the students something about responsibility for a job well done, as well. “They took a lot of ownership and were very proud of what they were able to accomplish,” she said.

points they scored and then figured out what the mean was for the game,” explained Gates. Other students figured out that the range for a game ran from five to 30 points. For the duck game, kindergartners chose a duck, and the older students recorded the frequency with which each of the numbers came up. Gates noted that the win-afish game was a big hit. “You throw a ball into a bowl and win a fish, but we just used plastic fish,” she said. Her students recorded how many kindergarteners were able to earn a fish or if they were able to get more than one ball in a bowl. Kindergartners received prizes for playing games. Gates said the prizes were provided by a minigrant from the Salisbury Parent Teacher Organization. After the carnival was over, each group of math students that had worked together turned in a project. “(My math students) had to summarize the results; discuss anything they had to change during the game, such as moving the throwing line; and create a box-and-whiskers plot a graph that shows the median

“Some of the area’s most talented musicians are coming together to help us fight hunger in our community. Straight out of Philly, Mo Lowda & The Humble recently returned from their European tour, and we’re excited to have them join us.” Mo Lowda & The Humble is the event’s headliner band. The group, which is best known for its progressive songwriting and energetic live performances, is new to FoodStock, Fliszar said. The other bands on the event lineup have played at FoodStock at one time or another. Steel Radiance has been part of the event since the beginning, performing classic rock and blues. Hydroponic Philharmonic, a Grateful Dead tribute band, is back for its second year. Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra is also bringing its big band sound back for another year. Back In Motion, a horn-based band specializing in rock and soul music, is returning to FoodStock after a brief hiatus. The Ogham Stones will bring Celtic rock with a kick to the music festival. More information about the sixth annual FoodStock Music Festival is available at www.foodstockpa.org or by finding the event on Facebook. Tickets may be purchased at a discount in advance at the organization’s website or at www.eventbrite.com. Full price will be charged at the gate. Those who wish to make a donation or volunteer in exchange for admission may email info@foodstockpa.org.

able to enter for free when accompanied by adults who have purchased tickets. The event has been moved to Lancaster from Manheim so that organizers can take full control of the event - the previous venue controlled the layout and concessions - and to ensure that it is family-inclusive and affordable. “Our goal is to maximize attendance and, therefore, maximize the amount of money we can raise for hunger-fighting organizations in our community,” explained Jack Fliszar, FoodStock promotion and marketing coordinator. In the past five years, FoodStock has raised approximately $30,000. Fliszar noted that the event was created by Tom Hayden, who worked for the United States Postal Service and saw firsthand the success of the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Hayden wanted to do more, so he created FoodStock Music Festival, which provides funds for local food banks and pantries. “Food insecurity affects people and families from all age groups, and summer months are especially tough,” Fliszar said. He reported that according to www.feedingamerica.org, 1 in 8 people, including 1 in 6 children, struggle with hunger in Pennsylvania. “In Lancaster County, approximately 59,000 residents, including 1 in 5 children, go hungry on a regular basis,” Fliszar remarked. “Additionally, those depending on food pantries are coming from all walks of life,” he continued. “Looking at the bigger picture, food insecurity not only affects these individuals, it can have a negative impact on the entire community.” Following the festival, the FoodStock board of directors will determine where to disburse the proceeds so they do the most good. Past recipients have included the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, PowerPacks, the Manheim Central Food Pantry, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services, and Warwick Community Chest. FoodStock organizers are excited about the bands that will perform at the event. “We’ve got a great music lineup this year,” Hayden enthused.

Music And Fireworks from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash
Each year, the New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP) partners with the New Holland Band, under the direction of Ken Laudermilch, to hold an Independence Day concert, followed by fireworks, in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, located on the 400 block of East Jackson Street. In 2018, the concert began at the appointed time in spite of a downpour. “It rained, but we played anyway,” recalled Laudermilch. “People sat out there (in the park) with their umbrellas, and they gave us a standing ovation at the end.” This year’s concert, which will once again be followed by a fireworks display, will be held on Thursday, July 4, at 7 p.m. in the New Holland Community Park. As in the past, Laudermilch, who will conduct and narrate, has planned a two-part concert with an Americana theme, including a number of tunes that pay
homage to American history along with well-known songs chosen to appeal to people of all ages. The event will open with the national anthem and the posting of the colors before the band launches into John Philip Sousa’s “Black Horse Troop,” a tune written for the Ohio National Guard. The next tune, “Concord” by Clare Grundman, invokes images and sounds of the Revolutionary era using the songs “The White Cockade,” “America,” and “Yankee Doodle.” Local brothers Caleb and Aaron Good will perform a duet of “Cousins,” a piece by Herbert Lincoln Clarke, who served as Sousa’s first coronet player. Caleb will play coronet, and Aaron will play trombone. Laudermilch chose “Americans We” by Henry Fillmore in part because it was published around the same time the New Holland Band was founded. The first half of the concert will also include “American Folk Rhapsody No. 2,”
by Grundman, which includes a number of easily recognized tunes; “Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company,” by Sousa; and “The Bandwagon” by Philip Sparke. Finishing up part one will be “Belle of the Ball,” by Leroy Anderson, which Laudermilch said was written post-World War II, and “The Billboard March” by John N. Klohr, which dates back to 1901, followed by “Let Freedom Ring,” a medley of patriotic songs including “Semper Fidelis,” “America the Beautiful,” and “My Country ’Tis of Thee,” among others. The final number, “Esprit de Corps” by Robert Jager, is a variation on the Marine Hymn. The second half of the concert will open with the catchy “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” by Irving Berlin. “It was his first major hit in 1911,” shared Laudermilch. Next up will be George M. Cohan’s “Patriotic Fantasy.” “George M. Cohan was born on the third of July,” noted
Laudermilch. “He published more than 300 songs, including ‘Over There,’ ‘Give My Regards to Broadway,’ ‘Yankee Doodle Boy,’ and ‘You’re a Grand Old Flag.’” “This Is My Country” will follow “Patriotic Fantasy.” Laudermilch has chosen “Golden Jubilee,” a song Sousa wrote to celebrate 50 years of conducting, to be followed by Irving Berlin’s “Songs for America.” “Let Freedom Ring” will then be followed by “Armed Forces Medley,” which includes a tribute to each branch of the armed services. Standards such as “America the Beautiful” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever” will bring the concert almost to a close. Laudermilch has saved “God Bless America” for last. “This was written (by Irving Berlin) at the end of World War II, and it was put away on the shelf,” said Laudermilch, who added that some years later when Kate Smith asked Berlin for a new tune, he gave it to her. The concert will begin at 7 p.m., and the fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m. The rain date

will be Friday, July 5. The performance is one of many musical presentations brought to the park each summer by NHSAP. All shows are free to the public. For more information about NHSAP and a full concert schedule, readers may visit www.newhollandsummer arts.com. NHSAP welcomes volunteers. Readers who have questions may email newhollandsummer

WellSpan Opens New Lab
WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital recently opened its new simulation lab. 600 staff members, including nurses, physicians, nurse practitioners, paramedics and other clinicians. In addition to practicing their skills, staff members will be able to work as a team and receive immediate feedback. The lab has video equipment that can capture
training as it occurs in the lab. The lab includes a room with video monitors and a space for staff to gather, watch their training sessions and be debriefed by instructors. Supported by the Ephrata Community Health Foundation, the $300,000 classroom was
funded by donations and grants, including a $50,000 grant from the Dart Foundation as well as gifts from community donors and WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital physicians and staff. The Ephrata Community Health Foundation is a community-based, not-for-profit corporation that exists to inspire gifts and grants to support the health and well-being of northern Lancaster County residents. The Dart Foundation, a private family foundation established by Dart Container Corporation founder William A. Dart and his wife, Claire T. Dart, supports projects that enhance education, especially in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math, and those that improve the quality of life in specific communities.
