Summer Lunch Program Continues By Ann Mead Ash
Very shortly after schools closed in March, The Factory Ministries and Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) partnered to begin providing lunches for students in the district in need. That program was scheduled to end on May 27, but administrators at The Factory were able to secure funding to continue the program through June 5. Now, Karla Neff, director of Pequea Valley elementary advocacy at The Factory Ministries, is happy to announce that funding has been secured to continue the program throughout the summer. The majority of funding was provided by a Pennsylvania Department of Education Summer Food Service Program grant, but funding also came from a Steinman Grant and Lancaster CARES. Neff reported that the cost of the program runs about $2,500 per week. “We have also had support from community donations,” said Neff. “People
want to make sure children are fed over the summer, and we (at The Factory) are super passionate about them being fed, so it’s a collaborative effort to make sure the funds are there.” Currently, lunches are available to be picked up by families with children in PVSD each Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. at The Factory Ministries, located in the Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. A drive-through system is utilized. In some cases, lunches may be delivered. “We have a few families that need delivery; we offer that when it’s a necessity,” said Neff. Multiple brown bag lunches are given out to supply food until the following week. Each child in a family receives five lunches, but not all students who take part in the program pick up meals each week. The program is open not only to students who are eligible for free and reduced-cost school lunches, but to any child in PVSD ages 1 to 18
who has been affected by COVID-19 restrictions. In addition, students over age 18 who are still registered and attending school are also eligible. Lunches will be distributed through Wednesday, Aug. 19. Each brown bag lunch generally includes a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, juice or milk, chips, and fruit or vegetables, but Neff reported that the menu will vary. “We have our standard lunch, but we are hoping to find other creative ways to build lunches,” she said. “This week we had chicken patties, and in the future, we hope to have frozen hamburger patties and buns,” said Neff. “We are trying to have variety.” Neff is also thankful to local businesses that have reached out to help. “Paradise Solar Energy bought pizza kits from Two Cousins, so every student got a pizza kit,” she noted. “We hope to continue to do fun things like that to support local See Summer Lunch Program pg 2

Pequea Valley Public Library stored books that were returned while the library was closed due to COVID-19 restrictions in the Perella School House. The books must be quarantined before they can be returned to the library shelves.
Catherine O’Sullivan, director of the Pequea Valley Public Library (PVPL), is excited about what is happening at the library on the top of the hill at 31 Center St., Intercourse. On June 8, library staff were allowed back into the building to begin to prepare to reopen. On June 22, the library began serving patrons by appointment at a pickup window in the lobby as a step toward possibly reopening in July. “We closed in mid-March (in adherence to COVID-19 restrictions),” recalled O’Sullivan, who said PVPL had been waiting for directions from the Office of Commonwealth Libraries on how to proceed with reopening. “The
Office of Commonwealth Libraries put the guidelines in place for us,” explained O’Sullivan. “For the yellow phase, we are allowed to be open for staff only.” During the weeks of June 8 and 15, the staff was at the library beginning the tasks of shelving books. O’Sullivan explained that since the library closed, returned books have been piling up. “ With 14 libraries in the county, people have been returning books, and they are going to keep returning books to all the libraries,” said O’Sullivan, who noted that books borrowed from libraries as far away as Manheim have showed up in the PVPL book depository. “The books (that have been returned) are in quarantine in the Perella School See PVPL pg 6

VBS Goes Virtual At Calvary Monument By Ann Mead Ash
Earlier in the spring, Kristen Weber, director of children’s ministries at Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC) in Paradise, got together with the Paradise Kids Ministry Team and staff to consider ways to turn the V that stands for vacation in vacation Bible school into a V that stands for virtual. “It was a collective decision … to pursue some form of virtual Bible school this summer,” said Weber. “We decided to see what we could put together in early May.” The result is a virtual Bible school called IncrediWorld Amazement Park, which will give youngsters an opportunity to take an exhilarating trip through God’s amazing world. Each registered student will receive a VBS kit including games, crafts, snacks, and prizes. Kits were available for pickup at CMBC, 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, beginning June 22. See VBS pg 5
Gavin (left) and Luke Weber are looking forward to taking part in the virtual Bible school (VBS) coordinated by Calvary Monument Bible Church. Registration for the VBS, called IncrediWorld Amazement Park, is ongoing, and students began picking up VBS kits at the church on June 22.

WellSpan Health Receives Award The Joint Commission and the National Quality Forum recently announced that WellSpan Health has won a 2019 John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award - one of the highest safety awards in health care for its Sepsis Central Alert Team, an innovative program that works to
quickly detect and treat sepsis, a lifethreatening medical emergency. WellSpan reported that it is the first Pennsylvania health system to achieve the honor in 15 years. The Joint Commission is known as the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in

health care, and the National Quality Forum sets national standards for health care performance measurement. The two organizations founded the Eisenberg Awards in 2002 to recognize the best examples of individual, local, and national efforts to improve patient safety and health care quality. The awards were to have been announced in March during the National Quality Forum Annual Conference in Washington, D.C., but the conference was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The last Pennsylvania health system to win an Eisenberg Award was the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 2004. Previous award winners have included well-known health care organizations across the country, including the Mayo Clinic, Memorial Hermann Health System in Texas, Kaiser Permanente, and Henry Ford Health System in Michigan. WellSpan Health received the Eisenberg Award in the category of Local Level Innovation in Patient Safety and Quality, which recognizes a project or initiative that focuses on making an impact at the local community, organization, or regional level. WellSpan’s Sepsis Central Alert Team program earned the award as an example of successful system changes or interventions that make care safer or advocate on a patient’s behalf. Begun in 2017, the Sepsis Central Alert Team is a

group of registered nurses who have critical care and emergency medicine experience and who continuously monitor patients for signs of sepsis at five WellSpan hospitals from a remote location. The team is notified when WellSpan’s electronic health record system detects symptoms of sepsis in a patient’s vital signs, including temperature and heart rate, and lab results. When notified of these markers, the Sepsis Central Alert Team directly contacts the patient’s physician or nurse, so they can determine if the patient may be septic or clinically unstable and can consider administering life-saving drugs, fluids, and other interventions. The team has saved an estimated 350 lives since its inception, as it dramatically shortened the time it takes WellSpan to respond to sepsis cases and speeded up the time that patients receive lifesaving medications. Early identification and screening times improved from 67 minutes to 12 minutes. As a result, the percentage of WellSpan patients who receive both timely and effective sepsis care is better than both state and national averages. WellSpan reported that WellSpan York Hospital now boasts a sepsis survival rate in the top 1% of its peers nationally. The health system’s work in this area has attracted the attention of health care providers from across the country, with leaders sharing sepsis best practices with hospital and health system leaders from Massachusetts, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Virginia, and other states. The Eisenberg Awards, given in three categories, bring together the quality community to recognize groundbreaking initiatives that are consistent with the aims of the National Quality Strategy: better care, healthy people and communities, and smarter spending. businesses and give (recipients) something fun they can do as a family.” Currently, lunches are prepared for 150 students each week, which means over the next 10 weeks, the organization will distribute about 7,500 lunches. Neff said that a consistent group of volunteers has been packing on Wednesday mornings and distributing the lunches in the afternoon, but as people return to the workforce, she expects to need more volunteers. Individual volunteers must be at least age 16 to participate, but families are welcome. Looking forward, Neff hopes to add an outdoor component to the program. “Once parks open, we would love to take the lunches to parks,” she noted. VBS from pg 1 On Monday, June 29, the VBS will premiere on YouTube for families to watch at their convenience. The hourlong videos will include a welcome, songs, a Bible lesson, interactions with crafts and games leaders, and a closing complete with the popular VBS drama. “The goal is to provide families with a fun, free, and unique opportunity to explore God’s amazing creation,” said Weber. “(The VBS will) also give them the chance to (invite friends over to watch to) share the Gospel in their own communities and neighborhoods.” Weber noted that the VBS offers a little something for everyone. “For those who enjoy crafts, the day five craft video should be a hit,” she said. “For the game lover, there is an awesome scavenger hunt and lots of
time for outdoor fun.” She noted that the series is part of the church’s response to the challenge of COVID-19 restrictions. “With social distancing still a reality, we are looking to fall for our bigger gatherings, but we encourage participants to join us online or in person on Sundays this summer and again for our Awana program when it starts this fall,” Weber said. The VBS is designed for children age 5 through sixth grade, but Weber noted that children of all ages may enjoy the videos. Children may be registered at https://calvarymonument.org/ ministries/children. More information about the church may be found at https://calvary monument.org. Celebrate Lancaster, the celebration of Lancaster city’s culture and diversity along with the city’s Fourth of July celebration, is still on for 2020. The City of Lancaster will host Celebrate Lancaster, presented by title sponsor Fulton Bank, on Friday, June 26, with the festivities taking place throughout Lancaster city. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Celebrate Lancaster 2020 will take a different format that spreads the event around town and does not involve large gatherings. Featured during Celebrate Lancaster will be four mobile performances with musicians on trucks bringing live music to every neighborhood, food trucks in different areas of the city for residents to enjoy, and fireworks displays at dusk to conclude the event. The displays will take place at two locations - the northwest and southeast quadrants - so residents can view them from various points of Lancaster city. The specific locations of fireworks will not be released to avoid crowds gathering. Residents are encouraged to watch fireworks from their homes or tune into a livestream on the City of Lancaster’s Facebook page.

In place of its usual summer theater camps, Servant Stage Company has launched an online theater training program called The ConSERVANTory, offering virtual theater classes for youths ages 10 to 18. The youth theater education program has been a growing part of Servant Stage in recent years, with more than 200 students taking part in its theater camps and classes each summer. Due to health restrictions and safety concerns, some of this year’s camps have been canceled, but Servant Stage remains committed to offering theater training through alternative methods. Summer classes began on June 23 and are slated to run through Thursday, July 16. They will be livestreamed and will primarily be taught as masterclasses, executive director Johnathan

Derek Martin, Danielle Poznanovic, Amanda Lewis, Sarah Watson, and Reji Woods. The topics covered during the classes will focus the general areas of dance, vocal performance, and acting, as well as specifics such as auditioning, improvisation techniques, stage crew opportunities, costume design, makeup design, directing, and more. The group classes will be offered following the paywhat-you-will model utilized for many of Servant Stage Company’s productions. Fees have been set for private lessons. Bauer said. “The students are primarily observers, but they are all live (classes), and students will have the opportunity to ask questions,” he added. “We are also offering private lessons in singing, dancing, or acting with several of the instructors, which would be even more interactive.” The classes will also be recorded, so if students have difficulty accessing the livestream, they may receive a link to view the class at a later date. Each class will run for 75 minutes, and classes will be taught by a variety of theater professionals from Lancaster County and elsewhere. Instructors will include Glen Brodersen, Jordanne Brodersen, Andrea Calderon, Wally Calderon, Brandon Cameron, Brance Cornelius, Katelyn Coryell, Jacob Daniel Cummings, Kelly Donah, Amber Emerson, Chris Faith, Rebekah Hill, Ray Hilton, Amanda Lewis,

House,” said O’Sullivan. “They must be placed in quarantine in a separate place away from the library.” The Perella School House is an addition to the west side of the library built to resemble the original Pequea Valley Public Library, which was located in a one-room schoolhouse on Old Philadelphia Pike in Intercourse. Through Friday, July 3, patrons may access the library by calling 717-768-3160 on Mondays through Fridays between 9 a.m. and noon or 2 to 5 p.m. for an appointment. “Patrons should call and ask for a specific title and author, and we will get it and tell them what time to come pick it up at the window,” said O’Sullivan, who noted that patrons are requested to wear a mask when picking up items at the window. She added that the library asks patrons to be sure to call so that the staff have the necessary time to find the requested materials and to help maintain social distancing standards in the library’s small vestibule. She also noted that DVDs and other audio materials will not be available from the library during the
yellow phase. O’Sullivan said that the staff hopes that patrons will be able to come into the library again at some point in July. “When people are able to come into the library in July, they will see some improvements that benefit them,” said O’Sullivan, who noted that the circulation area and the lobby have been painted and new shelving has been added. In addition, the success of a fundraiser held between January and March enabled the library to install handicappedaccessible doors. “(Thanks to) an anonymous donor, we held a matching funds drive,” said O’Sullivan, who noted that the initial pledge was for $40,000. “We are extremely grateful,” she said. Looking ahead, O’Sullivan is excited to announce the date when patrons may return to the library. “We are looking forward to seeing everybody again,” she said. At this time, the Salisbury Township Branch Library, 835 Houston Run Drive, Suite 220, Gap, remains closed. More information about PVPL may be found at www.pvpl.org.

Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation (LOHF) announced the first eight organizations to join the new LOHF Clinical Supervision Collaborative (LCSC) in response to the need for more child/youth mental health care professionals in Lancaster County. The initiative is funded for three years, in part by a grant from the Steinman Foundation. The collaborative will equip mental health professionals to take on supervisory roles and will provide a post-master’s clinical fellowship program for license-eligible providers to receive supervision required for licensing. The LCSC is slated to begin in July with its inaugural participants: Community Services Group, TEAMcare Behavioral Health, Laurie Schein, Commonwealth Clinical Group, Thoughtful Wellness, Matters of the Heart Counseling, Diversity Works, and Focus Counseling Services. The LCSC believes that investing in the talent pipeline for behavioral health will result in stronger behavioral health organizations and competent supervisors who can mentor their staff. The LCSC adds that trained supervisors can effectively recruit and retain clinical staff, reducing patient caseloads, improving recruitment and retention, and lowering staff turnover rates. For more information on the LOHF Clinical Supervision Collaborative, readers may visit www.lohf.org/LCSC.

George Ross Society president Stewart Carter participated in the society’s Memorial Day observance by placing flags at veterans’ graves at Lancaster Cemetery and St. Mary’s Cemetery. As part of its Memorial Day observance, the Lancaster George Ross Society - National Society, Children of the American Revolution (N.S.C.A.R.) joined the Red Rose Chapter, Blue Star Moms in placing American flags at veterans’ graves at Lancaster Cemetery and St. Mary’s Cemetery. Members of the Donegal Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Chapter participated, along with other groups and members of the community in the event organized by Lancaster AMVETS Post 19. “After meeting the Blue Star Moms to receive flags, we split up to search for veteran graves,” said George Ross Society president Stewart Carter. “We wore masks as necessary to be safe during this time. We placed flags at all veteran graves we found and also replaced old flags with new ones and gave the old flags to the AMVETS who will retire them. We quietly thanked each veteran by name for his service.” “Remembering American veterans who sacrificed their lives for our country and for our freedom is important,” Stewart continued. “We need to honor them with our respect. We had a really fun time placing the flags as a community. We are grateful to AMVETS Post 19 and to the Blue Star Moms, and we look forward to doing this again next year.” The Lancaster George Ross Society - N.S.C.A.R. was founded in 1948. The N.S.C.A.R. was founded in 1895 and is known as the oldest and largest patriotic organization for youths in the United States. Any boy or girl under the age of 22 is eligible for N.S.C.A.R. membership if he or she is lineally descended from a man or woman who, with unfailing loyalty, rendered material aid to the cause of American independence as a soldier, sailor, civil officer, or recognized patriot in one of the several colonies or states, or of the United States. To learn more, readers may visit www.nscar.org and www.pennsylvaniacar.org. Membership inquiries may be directed to Society senior president Ann Carter at carterfamily13@ gmail.com.

YWCA Seeks Nominations Nominations will be accepted for the fourth annual Women of Achievement Luncheon. YWCA Lancaster will honor four women in the community and help to raise money and awareness for YWCA Lancaster’s mission of eliminating racism and empowering women. YWCA Lancaster seeks to recognize local extraordinary women who selflessly give of their time and energy to make the community a better place. This event recognizes and honors women who have demonstrated qualities of leadership and excellence in their personal and professional endeavors while supporting, embodying, and complementing YWCA Lancaster’s mission. The Women of Achievement Luncheon is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 6, at noon. It may look a bit different this year as staff plan, observing the current guidelines for public gatherings. Regardless of how many people are able to gather in one room, four outstanding women in the community will be honored. A new category has been added for young women ages 16 to 20. The YWCA also wants to offer a special opportunity and recognition for women who have served on the front lines during the coronavirus pandemic, such as a health care worker, grocery store clerk, first responder, police woman, or anyone who was in the midst of the crisis and exhibited grace under fire while embracing the mission of YWCA. Nominations will be accepted through Monday, July 20. To nominate a woman, readers may visit https://ywcalancaster .org/womenofachievement/ and download a nomination packet. Partner opportunities are still available. For more information, readers may call 717-393-1735.

Tips Posted For Earning Money From Home
R060054
Some Americans may be looking for ways to earn money from home, and TopCashback.com has provided suggestions. Opportunities include selling items, participating in research, getting paid to shop and referring a friend, being a virtual assistant, tutoring someone online, and creating a YouTube channel. Unwanted or unused items in a home or closet, from purses to clothes and makeup, can be sold on online marketplaces. To sell items, the seller needs to simply follow the site’s directions and upload a couple of pictures of the products. The sites operate much like a virtual garage sale. People can allow apps like Sweatcoin to collect data about their physical activity and get paid for that data. The app simply syncs with the existing health apps on a person’s smartphone or smartwatch and runs in the background. If someone joins, they can convert their outdoor steps into currency to spend on products and services. People can make money by shopping online through a rebate site like TopCashback.com. From groceries to cleaning supplies to backyard furniture, rebate sites pays people to shop by returning a percentage of their purchase as a cashback rebate with participating retailers. People may also be able to earn money for every person they refer to the site. A virtual assistant is just like a personal assistant, except they can earn money from the comfort of their own home. From website maintenance and coding to writing, proofreading, and marketing, there are a variety of tasks people can do online for someone without being physically present. Whether a teacher, professional, or subject matter expert, people can make money simply by sharing their skills or teaching others online. Tutor sessions can help people earn money all while being done from the comfort of their home. All someone needs is a webcam, a skill to share, and an audience. Whether an individual composes how-to videos or documents their everyday life via video blogs, YouTube is a great place to turn views into money. Although it can take a while to build an audience, with enough videos and subscribers, a person can earn a profit.

As readers head outdoors for some fun this summer, whether at the beach or in their backyard, they should keep safety in mind. Physicians from Patient First have offered the following suggestions to protect one’s skin and to stay safe during cookouts. Readers should remember to protect themselves and their family members from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Individuals should always use a broad spectrum sunscreen with a minimum of 30 SPF, even when it is cloudy, and apply sunscreen 15 to 20 minutes prior to going outside. Wide-brimmed hats help shade one’s neck and face but do not offer complete protection. Readers are encouraged to use sunscreen on these sensitive areas. Readers should wear lightweight sun-protective clothing as well as long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Readers should wear sunglasses that block UV rays. Sun damage accumulates and occurs even when one is not actively trying to soak up a few rays. Whether one is walking the dog or mowing the lawn, sun
damage adds up over time. Newborns and children are especially sensitive to the sun’s rays, so protecting their skin is crucial. Family cookouts are a summer tradition. To keep everyone safe when firing up the grill, readers should remember these precautions. They should keep children and pets away and establish a 3-foot “child-free zone” around the grill. They should use their grill outdoors only, keeping it away from their home, deck furniture and overhanging branches that might catch fire. They should remove grease or fat from the grill tray so it does not flame up. They should never leave the grill unattended. They should not mix grilling and drinking alcohol. Patient First has provided uninterrupted care throughout the pandemic and will continue to do so throughout the summer. All Patient First Medical Centers are open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. COVID-19 testing also continues at designated Patient First locations. Updates are available at www.patientfirst.com/covid -19-testing.

use; eye injuries; eye diseases; and smoking. Although most cataract cases in the United States are in older adults, children may also develop pediatric cataracts. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, cataracts in a child can be congenital, meaning they are present at birth, or acquired, having developed after birth. Without treatment, cataracts in young children can cause poor development of the visual pathway between the brain and the eye, leading to vision impairment. Therefore, diagnosing and treating cataracts early in children is critical to promoting normal vision development. For free information on cataracts, readers may call Prevent Blindness at 800-3312020 or visit www.prevent blindness.org/cataract/. Prevent Blindness, known as the nation’s oldest eye health and safety nonprofit organization, has declared June as Cataract Awareness Month to educate the public on symptoms, types of cataracts, cataract surgery, and more. Cataract is the world’s leading cause of blindness, according to Prevent Blindness. A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens, which blocks or changes the passage of light into the eye. The lens of the eye is located behind the pupil and the colored iris and is normally transparent. Vision may become blurry or dim because the cataract stops light from properly passing through to the retina. Generally, a cataract does not cause pain, redness, or tears. Risk factors for cataracts include older age; intense heat or long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun; certain diseases, such as diabetes; inflammation in the eye; hereditary influences; events before birth, such as German measles in the mother; long-term steroid

In order to better accommodate its current group of rescued cows, sheep, goats, pigs and other farmed animals, as well as to provide space for even more animals in need, the Lancaster Farm Sanctuary recently relocated to a larger facility. The nonprofit sanctuary, founded in the summer of 2017 by Sarah Salluzzo and Jonina Turzi, was previously located at 558 Milton Grove Road South in Elizabethtown. The sanctuary’s new address is 1871 Milton Grove Road, Mount Joy. Although the new location is only 2 miles away from the previous farm, the new property has much more pasture space. “The
previous farm was about 5 acres but only 3 was habitable, because there was a creek and wetlands, explained board member Sara Petrosky. “The new farm is almost 18 acres, and almost all of it is pasture. The biggest benefit of the new location is that the sanctuary will not have to turn down as many requests by area police, humane workers and others who are seeking help for farmed animals in lifeor-death situations. “We have people asking almost daily, ‘Can you take in this animal?’ A lot of times the requests are by the police. We also get calls from good Samaritans or neighbors, Petrosky noted. “(The new location) will enable us to take in a lot more animals so we don’t have ISE S NR RE SU UCTU ON R TI ST AUC

Animals that cannot be accommodated are referred to partnering sanctuary organizations. One of the site’s newest resident is Orville, a small lamb, who suffers from a bone infection and is currently on medication. “He couldn’t keep up with the other lambs, and someone brought him to the farm, Petrosky explained. “We do the ‘Great Orville Watch’ where volunteers sit with him in two-hour segments. Other residents of the farm include two pigs, Willa and Charlotte, who were found by humane

police officers locked in a small shed; two dairy cows named Bess and Truehart; and even a chicken that fell off a truck and was left abandoned. “We have about 50 animals now, including chickens, goats, cows, sheep and ducks, two turkeys and different kinds of pigs, Petrosky stated. “We know their names and their personalities; they are just like kids. Volunteers work at the farm in shifts to take care of the animals, which includes feeding them and performing maintenance and cleaning chores. Volunteers also spend time building relationships with the animals since the sanctuary is the animals’ forever home. “We are not like other rescues where they are looking for homes for the animals, Petrosky pointed out. “In our case, they all come to live here for the rest of their lives. The sanctuary is an all-volunteer organization, and it relies on community donations to pay for veterinarians’ services, food for the animals, bedding and ongoing care. Additionally, the sanctuary recently launched a capital campaign to finance the construction of a new barn and fencing at the site, which will cost approximately $120,000. Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, tours of the site were offered every Saturday from May through October. “Since the isolation started in mid-March, we have been doing virtual tours that have been widely viewed, Petrosky said. “We also have bedtime stories with the animals on Thursday and Sunday nights at 7:30 p.m., where we read children’s books to our baby goats and sheep. The farm also offered a yoga program that included a one-hour class followed by a 30-minute walking tour of the sanctuary. This program is also currently being offered virtually. To view the offerings, readers may visit www.facebook.com /lancasterfarmsanctuary and choose Videos. It is projected that the tours and yoga will resume when the Lancaster County goes to the green status. The online exhibition for June’s First Friday is available for viewing at www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Lgg PAhjmLs. a staff member while he or she reads aloud, points out pictures, speaks in silly voices, and sometimes even acts out certain scenes. When COVID-19 arrived, the classes were closed for the rest of the year. However, Early Head Start/Head Start staff in Lancaster and Lebanon counties have been meeting with families on Zoom, continuing as much of their program as they can virtually. They also decided to reconnect with their students through virtual story times. Early Head Start/Head Start already had a strong Facebook following, so this platform was chosen for the story times. Staff members from both counties read
books in both English and Spanish. While the primary goal of the videos is to maintain a relationship with the families, they are also a good way to introduce the program and its staff to the community at large, which is important during recruitment season. Early Head Start/Head Start reported that on average, the posts reach more than 1,200 people, with encouraging comments and many shares. Videos have been uploaded on Saturday mornings since mid-April and will continue at least through June. To view the videos, readers may visit the “Lebanon County Head Start” page on Facebook.
