Native Son, New Shepherd grew up here and graduated from Pequea Valley High School (PVHS),” said Jesse Bills, who became the pastor of Pequea Evangelical Congregational (E.C.) Church, 5482 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, in July 2021. Bills, who graduated from PVHS in 2009, began attending the church in his 20s. “I didn’t go to college,” said Bills. “I sold cars at Rocky Ridge in Ephrata for about five years.” About 2018, Bills began to feel the call to ministry. In 2020, he began interning at Grace Community Church in Willow Street and attending Evangelical Seminary in Myerstown. In 2020 and into 2021, while Pequea E.C. worked with an interim pastor, Bills preached there monthly, interned in Willow Street, and attended seminary. He became the solo pastor at Pequea in July 2020. He began working at Grace Community as the pastor of discipleship during that same year, and in May 2022, he graduated from seminary. He continues to serve both churches in those roles. Pequea has a membership of about

the church), and we collected food for The Factory Market,” said Bills, who noted food was received from church membership and others in the community. “We took over 300 pounds in a week more than once,” Bills stated, adding that food is taken to The Factory on a regular basis now. “We try to reach out to the community whenever possible,” he said. The church holds a virtual Bible study each Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Those wishing to take part may connect at www.pcchurch.online. Services on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. are available in person or by livestream at the aforementioned website or by searching for “Pequea Church of White Horse” on Facebook. The summer sermon series is based on the book of James. “It’s called ‘Faith That Perseveres,’” said Bills. “It will run into August.” Bills said that church members are happy to see strangers in their midst. “There is a welcoming unity and strength,” he said, pointing out that recently a couple visiting from Connecticut joined the attendees at Sunday worship. “People were up very quickly to greet them,” he said.

Ken Laudermilch, conductor of the New Holland Band, noted that the organization has plenty of music to choose from when he selects compositions for the band to play at the annual New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP) Independence Day celebration. Church members are preparing the church for the days when they might hear more small feet moving through the building. “They have put a lot of resources into trying to create a nicer nursery and modernizing it,” said Bills. “It is their No. 1 desire to see (more) children and youth and families here.” One way the church is working to get to know families in the community is holding a movie night at 6:30 p.m. on the second Friday of each month year-round. During the warmer months, the movies are held outside at the church. Starting in November, the event moves to the White Horse Fire Hall depending on availability. Upcoming summer movies include “Moana” on Friday, July 8, at 8:30 p.m. and “Luca” on Friday, Aug. 12, at 8:30 p.m. During the more difficult days of the pandemic, Pequea worked with The Factory Ministries in Paradise. “We set up as a food collection site (at

Laudermilch said that this is one of several compositions Daugherty has written for the band. “Into the Air” salutes the courageous members of the U.S.

Other selections Laudermilch gave special mention include “Star-Spangled Spectacular” by George Cohan, which includes smatterings of well-known tunes such as “Yankee Doodle” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” Calling the “Commando March” by Samuel Barber, one of his favorites, Laudermilch recalled that the West Chester native was lauded by his hometown for going forth to “inspire the world with his music.” The second half of the concert will include the popular “God Bless the U.S.A.” by Lee Greenwood; “The Armed Forces Medley,” during which those who served in different branches of the military will be asked to stand when they hear the anthem of their branch; and “Let Freedom Ring,” which Laudermilch called “a great new piece.” The concert will be announced by Steve Nolt, formerly of WDAC radio. The performance is one of many musical presentations brought to the park each summer by NHSAP. All shows are free to the public. Parents Invited To Freedom Academy Information Night BY FRANCINE FULTON
This August, Freedom Life Church will launch a new ministry, Freedom Academy. Open to homeschool students, the alternative education program will offer preschool classes and a mix of elective and core classes for students in kindergarten through grade 12. are considering homeschooling are invited to attend an information night on Wednesday, July 6, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the church, 447 Noble Road, Christiana. Sam Masteller, pastor of Freedom Life Church, explained that Freedom Academy will be housed in classrooms at the church. “It’s similar to what people would understand is a homeschool co-op,” he said, noting that a small fee will be charged per class. “It’s sort of that idea, but we are focusing on faith, the Christian world view and American exceptionalism.” He said that the curriculum will promote what is positive about the country. “In our culture, there is a lot of focus on the negatives of our country and the rewriting of our history. But with all of the flaws, we live in an amazing country,” Masteller stated. “We believe that students should not be shielded from the negative, but they need to understand our history and how we have been a beacon of freedom and hope all over the world.”
Classes will be taught with a Christian perspective, and students will take part in chapel. “We intend on partnering with parents to (promote) a Christian world view and Judeo-Christian ethics,” Masteller stated. “(We plan to teach the Constitution) ... and the rich history that our country was founded on by people who sought God. They prayed and came to a place to establish freedom and religious liberty.” He said that many families had to homeschool because of the pandemic, but even before COVID, homeschooling was becoming increasingly popular. Programs like those offered at Freedom Academy provide homeschoolers with an opportunity for social interaction with other students. “We’ve noticed the (homeschooling) trend continue in our church and communities, and we felt inclined to play a role,” said Masteller. “With so many people choosing to homeschool, we wanted to be advocates and assist those who are making (that) decision.”

The Sights And Sounds Of Yesteryear BY ANN MEAD ASH
Steve Loewen, chair of the Vintage Sights and Sounds New Holland Antique Car, Gas Engine, and Tractor Show, remembers the exact moment more than 40 years ago when he suggested holding the show to New Holland Band representative George Weaver. “In 1981, we were doing the Memorial Day Pilgrimage,” recalled Loewen. “George was in the New Holland Band, and we were in the cemetery at Bowmansville. I said, ‘George, let’s have a car show in New Holland.’” Loewen explained that a show had been held for
two years by a local organization, but he did not think that would continue. “I wanted to keep the show going,” he said. “It had been extremely successful.” Weaver thought the car show would be a great project for the New Holland Band. “Music and antique cars go together well,” said Weaver, and he suggested the slogan “Vintage Sights and Sounds.” On Sunday, July 10, the 41st annual show will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland. The field will open for car parking at 9 a.m. According to Loewen, the theme of the
show will be “Pickup Trucks.” As in the past, vehicles to be judged must register by noon on Saturday, July 9. Loewen noted that he has been asked if an El Camino is a pickup truck, and he said he would allow the vehicle to be registered as a truck. John Riggs, who won best in show at the New Holland event a few years ago for his bright orange 1937 pickup, said that he agrees that the hybrid vehicles should qualify. Riggs, who was a mechanic for 39 years, devoted himself to restoring his pickup and spent six years on the project, enlisting a little help from each of his grandchildren along the way. “This is my seventh year showing it,” said Riggs, who brought home two
trophies from the 2021 Spring Car Cruise in Ocean City, Md. Organizers of the show find car accessories as fascinating as the vehicles. Weaver brought his 1958 Pontiac Bonneville to the interview, and he removed the car’s radio, explaining that it was the first transistor radio made by General Motors. “It was portable, so it was called a Sportable radio. You could take it on the beach to play music.” Between 9 a.m. and noon on July 10, cars will line up on the show field. Cars will be judged in more than 30 classes. Judging for the People’s Choice Award will begin at noon and cease at 2 p.m. For a nominal fee, spectators may

Redding had asked longtime fair board member Cliff Day to serve as parade marshal. Day declined due to health issues, but he promised to ride in the carriage in 2022. Day died of COVID-19 in February, but Redding will honor him as marshal for the 2022 parade. In addition, Redding has designated specially priced sponsorships for Division 1 of the parade to help cover the costs of upgrades to the association’s building at the corner of Roberts Avenue and Franklin Street. Those wishing to help with this effort may call 717354-5880. New for this year’s fair will be a fair queen competition and a coloring contest. “We want to have a fair queen who is knowledgeable about our fair and agriculture in our community,” said Overly. Funds to help send the New Holland queen to the state competition will be raised at a vendor bingo to be held at Garden Spot Fire Rescue, 339 E. Main St., New Holland, on Sunday, July 31, beginning at 2 pm. The coloring contest will feature three pages for three age groups in the fair book or to print out from www.newhollandfair.org. Prizes will be awarded to winners in each age group. The tug-of-war competi-
tion, long a fair favorite, will return, but teams will not be limited to fire companies. Instead, youth groups, sports teams, pastors, businesses, and more are encouraged to sign up. In addition, organizers are hoping to resurrect the bucket-brigade event, once associated with the fire company auxiliaries, at least as an exhibition this year. “We have some vintage items (to display),” said Overly. Entertainment will be featured nightly on a stage at the corner of Main Street and Custer Avenue. The Kracker Beez will play on Thursday, Sept. 29. The Jess Zimmerman Band will perform on Friday, Sept. 30, and Josh Squared will take to the stage on Oct. 1. Both organizers noted that they would like to hear fresh thoughts on the activities associated with the fair. “We would like to open up the lines of communication,” said Overly. “People don’t have to join the board,” pointed out Redding. “(They could come in to work) a few hours and give us their feedback and their ideas.” Redding added that if a community member sees an area that he or she is interested in, the organization is working to build subcommittees and develop junior chairs in a mentorship relationship.
Fulton Foundation Supports Education Program The Fulton Forward Foundation, an independent, nonprofit private foundation funded by Fulton Bank, recently announced a $125,000 commitment to the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), a global educational nonprofit focused on bringing the power of entrepreneurship to youths in lowincome communities. The funds, which will be provided to the organization over a four-year period, will be used to

world view, with electives and the socialization,” Masteller said. “We will share about why we think it’s an answer to one of their needs. We are excited about providing this opportunity for the community.”

newer show cars with the latest extras and fine detailing. In a typical year, more than 250 cars are on display, and the show goes rain or shine. “We take our chances,” Parke said. Vehicle owners will be asked to pay a registration cost per vehicle. Dash plaques will go to the first 150 registrants. Numerous trophies, door prizes and cash prizes will be presented throughout the day. Cars owned by members of the Lancaster County Cruisers are not eligible for trophies or prizes. Trophies are donated by local businesses and sponsors, who personally select the winners. W hile the cars are an attraction for automotive enthusiasts, family members can also find something to enjoy. Live music will be provided all day by DJ Jeff Grimaldi. Vendor booths will also be on the grounds with a wide variety of merchandise to peruse. Food, beverages and ice cream will be available to purchase, and there will be a sale of baked goods. There is no admission fee for the public, and plenty of parking will be available. Visitors are asked to bring nonperishable food items to support the Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank. Proceeds from this year’s event will also go to the food bank.
Held under huge tents!
