A Community Responds By Ann Mead Ash

A press release sent out in May by Kylie Stoltzfus, director of communications at The Factory Ministries, expressed wonder at the way area residents responded to the community needs that resulted from COVID-19 restrictions. “We had absolutely no idea what to expect as the … pandemic began to impact Lancaster County,” wrote Stoltzfus. The press release went on to note that the response from area residents was amazing. “The Factory Ministries has been blown away by the degree of generosity and creativity that has

shown itself through this season,” Stoltzfus wrote. Adam Nagle, director of The Factory Ministries, knew it would take that kind of unity to weather the pandemic. “From the beginning we’ve been saying, ‘If we get through this, we’ll only get through it together,’” recalled Nagle. “We believe that one of the most powerful forces on the planet is human collaboration and cooperation. We are stronger together.” In an area where free and reducedcost lunches are provided to more than 50% of students, the number of families receiving free food from the The Factory increased by 200 in less than two weeks. Fortunately, the community generously stepped up to help fill the need. See The Factory pg 5

Staff and volunteers with The Factory in Paradise handed out chicken barbecue during a Food Friday collection and received pizza kits to be used as part of summer lunches as Paradise responded to the increasing numbers of community members in need due to the COVID-19 crisis restrictions this spring.

Working To Grant Wishes Virtual Convoy Scheduled For Aug. 16 By Ann Mead Ash

Opening Date Set For Pet-Themed Art Show May was National Pet Month, and Mulberry Art Studios had put together an array of artists, vendors, treats for pets and their humans, rescue animals ready for adoption, and more to celebrate. Unfortunately, the second annual “We Love Our Pets” art show had to be pushed back and was rescheduled for July. July is here and Lancaster County recently moved into the green phase, but large gatherings are still not allowed to take place. W hile most of the studio’s spring and summer art offerings have been postponed to later in the year, owner April Koppenhaver and curator Stephanie Cole were determined to make the show still happen. In April, COVID-19 restrictions put Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, an organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening diseases, in a precarious position. Concern for the children served by MakeA-Wish, who fall into high-risk categories, was of the utmost importance. Wishes were postponed, and the popular Mother’s Day Convoy, which was ready to make a move to the Manheim Auto Auction, was postponed. The convoy is now scheduled as a virtual event to be held on Sunday, Aug. 16. See Make-A-Wish pg 11

Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley grants the wishes of children with life-threatening diseases. While COVID-19 restrictions have made that mission difficult, the organization recently held a giving week that raised nearly $100,000 toward making that goal easier.

When Lancaster County restaurant owners learned that outdoor service would be permitted, with restrictions, in the yellow phase of the process to reopen the county, many began thinking outside the box in order to create outdoor seating for their venues. For Tina Edgell, one of the owners at Revere Tavern, located at 3063 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, first learned from the Pennsylvania Restaurant and Lodging Association at the end of May that outdoor dining would be allowed. “We thought, ‘Now we will make our

Coconut oil is a great source of fat. Consuming fat helps you stay satisfied longer and also gives you a boost of energy. Almost 50% of the fatty acid in coconut oil is lauric acid, which also enhances the immune system. So for those reasons alone, you should try adding coconut oil to your coffee! - 1 cup brewed coffee - 1 tsp. Golden Barrel Coconut Oil - 1/4 tsp. cocoa powder (optional) Brew coffee. Pour hot coffee in blender. Add coconut oil and cocoa powder. Blend for 20 seconds or so until emulsified and frothy. Pour into mug and enjoy immediately.

Restaurants from pg 1 how to proceed in that direction. Late that night she received a text from Kimberly Nichols, one of the restaurant managers. “(Nichols) had been working with our skeleton crew nonstop, recalled Edgell. “Her text said, ‘I know how we’re going to do this.’ The next day, Nichols presented Edgell with what they have come to call “the pallet plan. Edgell posted a request for pallets on Facebook, and a former employee contacted her to say he could get all the pallets she would need. The next step was to create a wall of pallets linked by pieces of rope. Some of the pallets were painted and decorated with planters. A number of tables, some with umbrellas, were gathered and placed six feet apart. Lanterns from inside the restaurant were moved outside as well. The new outdoor dining space opened on June 5. Although weather that first night put a damper on business, the next day the weather cooperated, and the venue sold out for the evening. Now the outdoor dining area features 17 tables. Diners should wear masks to enter the area, and reservations are required. A limited menu including some dinner items is served Wednesdays through Sundays. Hours are 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and 4 to 8 p.m. on Sundays. Curbside pickup and partial occupancy inside are also now available during those hours. “We have done everything on

a shoestring budget, said Edgell, who said the restaurant plans to continue outdoor dining through the summer months. Revere Tavern is a family business. “My parents bought the place 55 years ago, said Edgell, who noted that her brother and sister are also active in the business. Readers who want to know more may search for “Revere Tavern on Facebook.

The Factory from pg 1 “The words he spoke to me on The Factory’s impact meant as much to me as the money,” said Nagle. Nagle noted that the community has been generous with more than funds and food. “The advice that meant the most to me came from a local businessman and had to do with leading well through crisis,” said Nagle. “He said, ‘Be clear and overcommunicate,’” recalled Nagle, who said that the man encouraged him to stay healthy, both physically and emotionally, through the crisis by extending grace to

himself and his team. “I think (that advice) helped us accomplish more and care for more families as we worked at being more accessible than ever,” said Nagle. One of the ways Nagle has communicated with the surrounding community has been with daily Facebook updates. The briefings started in March following a meeting of the executive team. “I went live and wanted our community to know we were here for them,” said Nagle. “We had strong response to that and realized it might be good to keep

that message out there.” While overwhelmed by community generosity, Nagle has also been impressed by the dedication of ministry staff. “This team is special,” he said. “They

love well, and … that keeps them free, risk oriented, and innovative.” Nagle added that every team member is crucial. “ We don’t have any ‘non-essential’ staff,” he said. “Everyone is

mission critical to caring for this community.” Readers who would like to learn more about The Factory and its mission may visit https://thefactoryministries.com.

Asked to name an instance of giving that stood out, Nagle struggled. “That is a tough to answer,” he said. “There have been so many that have touched my heart.” Nagle went on to recall a Factory participant living on a fixed income below the poverty level who gave The Factory a $25 check. “That’s a huge sacrifice,” noted Nagle, who added that another donor purchased cupcakes from Sweet Shenanigans in Intercourse to donate to the school lunch program The Factory began running with Pequea Valley School District after schools closed. “(The donor) did it to support a local business as well as provide a treat for the (children),” said Nagle. Another family set up and paid for a chicken barbecue to be held during a Food Friday food drive. “Each person that donated food got (free chicken),” explained Nagle, who noted that on that Friday a food donation record was set. Lastly, Nagle mentioned that on the Our Day of Giving that The Factory held in early May to replace other fundraisers that had been canceled, a man stopped by with a check for $2,000 from him and his wife. “They wanted to be a part of caring for the community,” said Nagle, who added that the man told him how important the ministry is to the community.

Library Offers Summer Reading Program “Imagine Your Story” is this year’s theme for the Summer Reading Program of the Library System of Lancaster County, including the Moores Memorial Library in Christiana. The program began on June 20 and will run through Saturday, Aug. 15. All programs will take place online. Participants can register for the Summer Reading Program at www.christianalibrary.org by accessing the “Go” button on the purple “Imagine Your Story” banner. Activities, special events, and reading will be tracked on the library’s website. As always, badges and prizes will be earned by meeting requirements for different age categories and awarded when the participant has completed the entire challenge. Prizes have been donated by local merchants. Examples include tickets for a magic show, McDonald’s coupons and Auntie Anne’s pretzels. The countywide Summer Reading Program is open to children and teenagers at the following age levels: Read Aloud, birth through age 4; Elementary, ages 5 to 9; Tween, ages 10 to 12; and Teen, ages 13 to 19. Special events offered by Moores Memorial Library will include Tammi the Drummer, Jesse the Reptile Guy, Phredd and his ukulele, Ryan with his bugs and a special program by the Lancaster County Parks Department. All of the programs are virtual, and participants must preregister to attend. To register for individual Moores Memorial Library programs, readers may visit the aforementioned website and click “Go” on the “Imagine Your Story” banner that depicts three children reading a book. There is a separate registration for each program. Registrants will receive a link for each virtual event after their registration is received so that they can participate. Patrons can check out books by calling the library at 610-5936683 after they have confirmed that the books they desire are available by searching the library catalog on the website. The librarian will give a time for nocontact pickup and the books will be waiting outside.

Kavrina Kelly (left), on-site coordinator for Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, recently received a truckload of food from Rhett Hintze, president of the Harrisburg Stake (diocese) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The food donation arrived at the food bank from a church storehouse.

R059397

The Lancaster Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints recently offered humanitarian aid during the COVID-19 pandemic in three different ways. The effort utilized the centralized structure of the church, which has headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah, and local wards or congregations that are aware of needs in their own communities. The first effort was born of a request to Stan Walters, the Pennsylvania Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) director and a member of the Shrewsbury Ward, from Shen Kreiser at York County’s Office of Emergency Management requesting more hygiene kits for quarantine housing for persons experiencing homelessness. A pallet of 500 kits was sent from Salt Lake City on May 7. The rest will be used statewide by Pennsylvania VOAD. Then on May 14 food donations of $500 each were delivered from the Bishops’ Storehouse in Baltimore, Md., to the York Food Bank, Lancaster County Food Hub, and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries from church funds managed by the Stake Communication Council. A shipment of 40,000 pounds of food from Salt Lake City arrived at the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank in Harrisburg on May 20. Local leaders chose this particular food bank because it in turn supplies more than 1,000 food assistance programs in 27 counties. According to the church, 15 truckloads of commodities from its network of bishop’s storehouses are being delivered to food banks and other charitable organizations weekly across the country. Harrisburg Stake president Rhett Hintze serves as the senior leader of the church in the Harrisburg area.

The Lancaster County Conservation District and the Federated Sportsmen of Lancaster will host the Lancaster County Youth Conservation School for students ages 14 to 16. Rather than canceling the field school due to COVID-19 concerns, organizers have opted to restructure the program and host a virtual experience instead. The school will run from 9 to 11 a.m. daily on Monday to Friday, July 20 to 24. By redesigning programming, organizers are securing opportunities to help keep students involved and motivated. The virtual programming expands the reach of their conservation messaging because of increased capacity, allowing more students to participate and also being available to those from outside Lancaster County or those who may have been hesitant to attend in

person. Students who attend the virtual experience in 2020 still have the option to apply to attend the traditional program in 2021. Youth participants may miss the in-person camaraderie and camping each night at the Northern Lancaster County Game and Fish Protective Association, but they will still have access to educational experiences through virtual field trips and live-streamed activities and instruction. There is no cost, but registration is required. Youth Conservation School kits containing printed materials and activities for the week will be mailed to each participant registering by Monday, July 6. To learn more about the Lancaster County Youth Conservation School, readers may visit http://lancasterconservation.org/ education/youth-conservation -school/.

an online gallery show - a virtual exhibit that will showcase artwork and hopefully still raise funds for their animal rescue partner, The Sebastian Foundation. The virtual exhibit will be hosted at www.mulberryart studios.com and will feature about 150 pieces of art featuring beloved furry friends from more than 80 local artists, half of whom are youths. A variety of media will be represented. The exhibit will go live on First Friday, July 3. Viewers will be able to vote for People’s Choice in both adult and youth categories. A Best of Show will be chosen by the studio. The exhibit and voting will be open through the end of July. The idea for “We Love Our Pets” grew from the love of one dog, Milo. Milo was rescued when he was a few years old and adopted by Koppenhaver’s nephew. Eventually, the nephew could no longer care for Milo, so the beagle mix was invited to live at Mulberry Art Studios, where he became the organization’s unofficial mascot. “Milo was an absolute gem,” Koppenhaver recalled. “He greeted all of our guests with his friendly warm tail wag or thump of the tail on the floor, his big brown eyes shining brightly. He would then proceed to go to our office and begin snoring.”

BEFORE

Koppenhaver’s late husband, Charles E. Gaul II, enjoyed Milo’s company as well. “I often thought Milo was as much of a blessing to Charlie as Charlie was to Milo,” Koppenhaver recalled. Milo died in November 2018, and less than two months later, Gaul passed away at age 93. Koppenhaver created the “We Love Our Pets” art show in memory of Gaul and Milo. “Our pets and our partners make a profound difference in our lives, and we wanted to raise money for an organization dedicated to bringing pets and people together,” Koppenhaver said. The Sebastian Foundation was founded in 2004 by Amy Garrety and facilitates the adoption of unwanted animals, offering a second chance to pets. The foundation is committed to compassion toward other living beings and aims to create a better world by educating the public about the welfare of animals. Ellen Stark, a volunteer for The Sebastian Foundation, commented, “We hope that by learning about us and how an individual can get involved, we will be able to welcome more volunteers into our group as well as potentially connecting one of our sweet dogs with their forever family.” Stark noted that proceeds from the art show will help The Sebastian Foundation provide food, bedding, and veterinary care to animals that may have been neglected or abused. “We rely on the generosity of donors to give these guys a healthy and happy future,” she said. For more information about the “We Love Our Pets” art show, readers may email Cole at stephanie.mulberryart@gmail.com.

especially our Wish families, said Terry Finch, one of the chairs of the convoy. “Drivers are continuing to raise funds through the new convoy date, and we’re excited about the fun new activities and technology we can use to create a successful virtual event. In addition to postponing the convoy, the chapter has had to cancel or postpone many other in-person events that raise pivotal funds for wish-granting efforts. Make-A-Wish counts on the local community, especially truck drivers to make the rescheduled virtual convoy a success. Funds raised by the convoy have supported more than 75% of wishes granted to area children each year. Make-A-Wish hopes that area residents will continue to support the organization during this critical time because the longer the COVID-19 safety precautions are in place, the larger the number of local children waiting for wishes will continue to grow. Community support is vital as the organization looks to safely grant wishes involving travel or large gatherings. Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley first began granting wishes in 1986. The Make-A-Wish organization grants a wish to a critically ill child approximately every 34 minutes. Readers may visit www.philadesv.wish.org to learn more.

R! AN

In the meantime, Make-AWish needed to raise funds, preparing to grant more than 450 local wishes when the organization is able. To make those wishes come true, the organization embarked on a virtual giving week, held from April 22 to 29. Area residents responded positively to the effort, and by midMay nearly $100,000 had been raised mainly by 18 teams and 66 participants. Dennis Heron, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, said that the organization was “blown away by the support. “On behalf of the children and families we serve, we thank everyone who donated for their dedication to the Make-A-Wish mission, especially during these challenging times, said Heron. On May 9, Make-A-Wish announced that the decision to turn the convoy into a virtual event had been made by staff and volunteer convoy planning committee members, and that the August date had been set. The decision was based on concern for the Make-A-Wish children and the members of the community who visit the event. No carnival will be held; however, a modified small truck convoy featuring the top 30 drivers and key sponsors will leave the auto auction during the day. The convoy will be broadcast live from the Make-A-Wish Facebook page. In addition, organizers are working to create other ways to share parts of the traditional convoy festivities, such as the food, clowns, and carnival games. Readers who would like to know more about the convoy may search for “Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Convoy on Facebook or visit www.wishconvoy.org. “Our convoy planning committee and volunteers are already hard at work identifying ways to make this virtual convoy an amazing event for our community, our supporters, and

Benefit Golf Outing Rescheduled

Valid Thurs., July 2 - Wed., July 8, 2020

14 South Tower Road, New Holland, PA 17557

The annual Landis Adult Day Services Benefit Golf Outing, originally scheduled to be held on June 5, has been rescheduled for Friday, July 24. The event will take place at Foxchase Golf Club, 300 Stevens Road, Stevens. Tee times will be available beginning at 7:30 a.m. Reservations have been transferred to July 24 for those who had already committed as sponsors or golfers for the June 5 event. The needs of Landis Adult Day Services (ADS) clients and their families have not decreased during this mandatory closure. Clients are staying safe by staying home, but this change puts pressure on their caregivers, especially those who are caring for loved ones with memory loss. Proceeds from the golf outing will help Landis ADS to prepare for clients’ return when the service is permitted to open. Registrations for sponsors and golfers will be accepted until Friday, July 10. To register and for more information, readers may visit https://landisadult day.org/golf/. Information is also available by contacting Janice Nikoloff, events specialist, at 717-381-3580. If it becomes necessary to cancel the benefit golf outing, Landis ADS will consider registrations and sponsorships to be charitable donations to Landis ADS. Anyone who prefers his or her contribution to be handled differently may contact Nikoloff at jnikoloff@landis.org. For information about Foxchase Golf Club, readers may visit https://foxchasegolf.com/.

The series began on June 26. The animated movie “Wonder Park” will be featured on Friday, July 3, through Sunday, July 5. The Lancaster community will get to watch movies on a stateof-the-art videoboard from the comfort of the outfield grass. Attendees should bring a blanket or a chair to take in this

Movies will run Fridays through Sundays each week through the remainder of the summer. Gates will open at 7 p.m., with the movie beginning at 8 p.m. each evening. Tickets are available for a set fee per person, regardless of age, at www.lancasterbarnstormers.com. In addition to the Summer Movie Series, the Broken Bat

several local food banks and churches to store and help order food as well as make some meals that have been distributed to local families. So far, we have supplied meals for almost 2,000 people in the Lancaster area, BRR outdoor education director Jon Hill said on June 18. “We are also partnering with two local ministries to help provide temporary, transitional emergency housing for families who have been economically impacted by the pandemic.

BRR has also created Family Weekend Getaways, a program to give family members the opportunity to slow down, enjoy the beauty of God’s creation, and connect with each other. Dates are available every weekend in July. Check-in will be open from 4 to 9 p.m. on Fridays, and checkout will be 2 p.m. on Sundays. Lodging will primarily be available in cabins or the retreat center, with all options including private bathrooms. A limited number of tent campsites are available for those who want a more rustic experience. Additionally, meal packages will be offered to take the stress out of cooking. Hill noted that the menus will be planned by BRR’s chef and will include family-friendly options. “We want this to be a relaxing weekend for families, and (we) have plenty of recreation areas available including basketball, volleyball, gaga court, (and) hiking trails, and the pool will be open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Hill said. “Due to the current guidelines, we are asking families to bring their own sports equipment. For safety, families are asked to reschedule their visit if anyone in their homes has a fever or other signs of sickness, and they must sign a waiver at check-in stating that they are healthy and will abide by physical distancing guidelines if they interact with other guests. Masks will be required in indoor public spaces or whenever physical distancing is not in use. BRR’s summer camp program will restart on Sunday, July 5, with both overnight and day camp programs. Guidelines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Pennsylvania Department of Health will be in use. Hill noted that although campers will be getting picked up while families arrive for the getaways, there will be minimal interactions between the two groups. Additionally, the Family Weekend Getaways will not use the cabins that are used by summer camp guests. The getaways will take place rain or shine, and rescheduling due to weather will be handled on a case-by-case basis. “Rainy days can be part of the fun of camping, Hill remarked. Two other programs BRR has rolled out include a matching gift challenge and a nine-month Christian gap year program. The gap year will be run through a

partnership with OneLife Institute. Beginning in August, recent high school graduates will live at BRR for nine months and receive discipleship training, serve in different areas of camp, and earn college credits through Cairn University. The matching gift challenge was created by a BRR supporter, who pledged to match donations up to $100,000. More than $80,000 in contributions has already been received, but more will be welcome. Supporting BRR now will enable the ministry to continue for years to come, Hill suggested. For more information about BRR and its new programs, readers may visit www.brr.org or call 800-858-9299.
