The Factory Names New Director By Ann Mead Ash
Adam Nagle is still settling into his new office in the Together Community Center (TCC), where he was recently named executive director of The Factory Ministries. While the walls in the office may still be bare, Nagle has assessed the situation and is eagerly working to move forward in his new role. “This is a special place with a really bright future,” said Nagle. “There’s energy and optimism, and I am excited about the pieces I can contribute.” Nagle, who was raised in Lititz, has training and experience in a number of areas that qualify him to lead the ministry. He attended Lititz Christian School and graduated from Warwick High School in 1995, later serving as a staff member of the Warwick football coaching team. He attended Word of Life Bible Institute in Pottersville, N.Y., See New Director pg 4

Shining A Spotlight On Rising Sun Historic District The mission of the Historical Society of Salisbury Township is to let the public know more about the history of the community and promote preservation of historic sites. Among the many important sites in the region is the Rising Sun Historic District. Legislated as a historic district in 1994 by the Pennsylvania Historical Commission, the area consists of four properties totaling about seven acres, located just off the intersection of routes 30 and 772 in Gap.
Dating back to the very beginning of the 19th century, the small village was established by the Kennedy family. James Kennedy built the Rising Sun See Rising Sun pg 9

In 2008, Nagle returned to Lancaster

He was tasked with increasing employee retention by 20%, a goal he and his team reached. “I learned a lot about workforce development and what skills are needed, said Nagle. “I picked up a passion to help in those places. In 2010, Nagle became lead pastor at
Bethany Grace Fellowship in East Earl, where he served for nine years. He lives in Terre Hill with his wife, Tonya, and four children. Nagle praised The Factory Ministries employees he met when he stepped into his new role. “The team here is amazing,â€? he said, describing the group as young and energetic. “It’s a team that deeply loves people.â€? He noted that The Factory culture exhibits a “Why not?â€? attitude when facing an issue. Nagle also lauded the local community for the support the organization received over the last several months. “Through this transition, the community really rallied around The Factory,â€? said Nagle. “My role is to continue to build on that to work with our community ‌ to build the organizational structure so we can sustain growth ‌ at a healthy level and pace. That’s the heart of where we are at and what I am doing.â€? The goals include having 100% of area children enter kindergarten ready to learn, 100% of area individuals holding a post-secondary credential, 100% of community members having a medical home, and half of those now living in poverty moving to a better situation in the next decade. Nagle is especially looking forward to working with the Pequea Valley School District and area business leaders on workforce development. “We want to step into that space, he noted. “The housing crisis is another issue we are excited about addressing, said Nagle, who is looking forward to having the first Safe Parking Lot on the East Coast open at the center in the fall. The endeavor will include a crisis shelter, currently under construction in the TCC basement. “For individuals who are living out of their cars, it’s illegal to stay in parking lots, explained Nagle. The center, which has been in the works for some time, will provide a kitchen, showers, and a secure place to sleep. Individuals who benefit from the

The academy’s open house has followed a similar format for the last few years, featuring free food, door prizes, face painting, a bounce house, a visit by local radio personalities who broadcast live, and more. In the Cavod Theatre, free food options will include hot dogs, popcorn, soda, and dessert items. Lickity Split will provide free ice cream cones for those who register for classes that day or who have already registered for the fall session, as well as ice cream treats for purchase. For those who register by Wednesday, July 31, and pay for their first month’s tuition, a drawing will be held to win a free month’s tuition at Cavod. Returning students who register by Monday, July 15, will receive a discount. Regular performances have been a hallmark of Cavod open houses in the past. This year, Dienner has lined up gymnastics, theater, dance, and hand-to-hand combat demonstrations every 30 minutes. In addition, characters from a variety of Cavod’s theater shows will be present to meet those in attendance. Every half hour, attendees will have an opportunity to win door prizes donated by local businesses, and at the end of the open house, a grand prize featuring a variety of experiences, including tickets to shows, will be given away. This year’s open house will emphasize a number of new teachers and upgrades to Cavod programs. “We have a new acrobat/gymnastics teacher,” said Dienner, referring to Jessica Rajski, who comes to the academy from Houston, Texas, with several years of teaching experience. Rajski trained and performed with Chimal Circus Performing Arts of Houston, and she has toured the world with trEd Dance Company. Rajski has also added a program called Dance, Step, and Stomp for all ages and all levels. “(The students) dance with their own rhythm. They might use barrels and sticks,” said Dienner. “It’s a cool class.” Monica DePaul is now teaching acting in Cavod’s redeveloped acting program. DePaul has worked with Blue Gate Musicals on the Bird-in-Hand Stage and Sight and Sound Theatres. She has a musical theater degree from California State University, and she spent several years working in New York City before coming to the Lancaster area to work. Dienner noted that the new acting program curriculum offers students more challenges to help prepare them for college theatrical programs. Dienner also stated that Cavod’s ballet curriculum now offers more for the serious dancer. “New ballet teacher Lillian Ortiz from Mississippi (has joined us),” said Dienner, who added that Ortiz’s experience includes dancing with Ballet Magnificat. Ortiz studied ballet at the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet and then at the Miami City Ballet School. Teacher Melissa Everett will teach early arts at Cavod. A graduate of Friends of Israel Bible Program, Everett has experience running day care, and she is excited to be teaching at Cavod. Rising Sun from pg 1 Tavern in 1792 and it opened the following year. That was followed by the Gap Blacksmith Shop around 1801. Maxwell Kennedy built two homes for himself and his family known as the Maxwell Kennedy House and Bellevue, along with their outbuildings. After James Kennedy passed away in 1799, Maxwell Kennedy (1782-1845) inherited 270 acres that included the Rising Sun. He served as constable for Salisbury Township in 1812. He served during the War of 1812 as a lieutenant and was later promoted to colonel. He served in the state House of Representatives from 1835-36. All four parcels were once part of a larger 500-acre property that included what is now the community of Gap. The Blacksmith Shop and the Kennedy House are on the south side of Route 30. The Kennedy House, built after 1806, has been added to over the centuries and continues to be a private residence. The Blacksmith Shop, constructed around 1801, was an important feature to the community. A two-story, stucco-covered stone building, it has interior brick chimneys at each gable end. Currently owned by the Historical Society of Salisbury Township, the building has been restored to its original state in many ways, and archeological studies have been done at the property, uncovering a wide assortment of artifacts. Bellevue was a blue limestone house with associated farm buildings. It stood until late last year when demolition of the property began. The tobacco barn on the site was one of the first elements to be removed to be rebuilt near Elizabethtown. Sometimes known as the Sign of the Rising Sun, the tavern was a popular lodging place for early travelers on the PhiladelphiaLancaster Turnpike that later became Route 30. It began as a drovers’ stop for teams and wagons and reputedly served notables such as Gen. Lafayette, Gen. Winfield Scott and President Andrew Jackson. The historic core of the building has been surrounded by additions over the years as it has prospered and grown. It continued to be used as a restaurant under a series of owners in the past decades under many different names, including the Beechtree Inn, 4 Brothers, and Stonehouse, but is currently vacant. As development continues in the area, the Historical Society of Salisbury Township is hoping the remaining structures in the Rising Sun Historic District will be preserved for the future. To learn more about the historical society, readers may visit www.salisbury twphistory.org or search for “Historical Society of Salisbury Township” on Facebook.
The Gen. John H. Michaelis Chapter 327 of the Korean War Veterans Association (KWVA) will meet on Wednesday, July 10, in the Bluebird Commons of Woodcrest Villa, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The meeting will begin at noon with a free luncheon. Jack Frank will speak on “Hiking and Mountain Climbing.” Membership in the KWVA is open to all servicemen and women who served in Korea at any time from 1945 to the present or were in uniform serving anywhere from June 25, 1950, to Jan. 31, 1955. A special effort is being made to recruit those who served in Korea at any time following the armistice in July 1957. For more information, contact Dr. James P. Argires at 717-394-1943.

annual car show, which will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland, on Sunday, July 14. The field will open for car parking at 9 a.m. “(The model year) 1969 to me was the end of an era,” commented Steve Loewen, who has worked to organize the show since its inception. “In the 1970s, everything changed.”
• Premium Bark Mulch • Dyed Mulch - Red, Black, Brown • Screened Topsoil • Mushroom Soil • Playground Mulch
Between 9 a.m. and noon, vintage cars will be lined up on the show field, while hitand-miss engines and vintage tractors will be on view in the park. Antique tractors and hit-and-miss engines that are not being judged may be displayed free of charge. Cars will be judged in more than 30 classes. Pieter Hegeman II, a member of the Susquehanna Valley Camaro Club, will bring his 1969 Z28 Camaro with a General Motors Crossram engine that he purchased in Maryland 20 years ago. “They only made 107 of
(these cars with the Crossram),” said Hegeman, “and there are less than 40 of them known to exist (at this time).” Hegemen explained that the engine had to be special ordered for the car and installed at the dealership. Because the cars were designed for racing, few have survived. Hegeman likes to tell the story of meeting one of the original designers, Jon Moss, developer of the Crossram motor, at a Super Chevy event at Maple Grove Dragway. “(Jon Moss) talked to me and said, ‘This is the real

Hegeman complimented Weaver and Loewen on how smoothly the show is organized and run. John Riggs of New Providence plans to bring his 1937 Chevy pickup that he converted to a street rod to the show. “My wife, Dorothy, found me (the truck) along the highway 12 years ago,” said Riggs. “She figured I would wait until I retired to (convert it).” Riggs purchased the truck around 2007, and he tore the frame off the next year. An experienced mechanic, Riggs completed the conversion around 2014 with help from his son and friends. “It’s never done,” said Riggs with a chuckle. Finished or not, Riggs’ truck has won several awards, including two victories at the Dover Southern Delaware Street Rod Association show. The show is presented in partnership with the New Holland Band, and it benefits the band, the Friends of the ELANCO Library, and the park it is held in. At noon, the New Holland Combo Band will perform, and at 1:30 p.m., the New Holland Swing Band will perform. Weaver noted this will be the only time either band will perform in the park this summer. Also at noon, judging for the People’s Choice Award will begin. For a nominal charge, spectators may obtain a ballot and
