For fun and enrichment

“Ialways love coming to The Factory,” said Tessa. “I had not been to this camp before, and I wanted to try it out.”

“It sounded like fun,” said Belle, who added that she was looking for a chance to get out of the house during the summer when she signed up for the art and gardens week at Brave Kids Summer Camp.

Layton noted that since he is homeschooled, he wanted to spend time with other kids, and Ava said she joined the camp because she really likes art.

“I came last year, and it was super-duper fun,” said Cora.

Brave Kids Summer Camps are held at The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, for three days each week for six weeks in June, July, and August. Children who live in Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) and who are in first through sixth grades are welcome to attend up to two weeks of camp for free. During some weeks, both morning and afternoon sessions are held, with up to 18 students per session.

Each week of camp has a theme. Art and garden week was held in June.

“We are doing a ‘getting messy’ week, which will include slime and painting,” said Karla Beiler, director of PV elementary advocacy with The Factory.

“We will do a cooking and baking week and a skill and tell week where we will have a police officer and a construction worker (among others),” said Beiler.

Beiler noted that each day includes a lesson that enhances the activity. “We typically do a story,” she shared. “Today we talked about flowers and how they are all flowers, but they are all unique,” she explained. “(We talked about how) each (flower is) different, and their different names and how they all look different.” Beiler noted that although activities are based on

Clothing ministry continues to bless the community

Nearly one year ago, Limeville’s Blessings, a store that offers free clothing, household items, children’s toys and more, opened at Limeville United Methodist Church. Since then, the church ministry has had a great impact in the community.

“July 16 will be our one-year anniversary,” said church member Melanie Shivery, store coordinator.

“We helped 264 families in 2022, and so far this year we have directly helped 268 families.”

the theme, they also include an academic facet. “We try to add in components of literacy and math, and we offer a range (of activities) because there are such a range of grades here.” Snacks and games in the gym are included in the agenda. Three student helpers join in to oversee the campers.

The camp was first held in the summer of 2022, following the completion

of the Braves Learning Center in The Factory. “It’s another enrichment activity to keep (students) connected over the summer,” said Beiler. “Overall, there are more than 120 spots (for students to attend over the summer).” More information about Factory programs for children may be found at https://thefactoryministries.com /what-we-do/#early-learning.

Taking a swing against poverty

More than 25 years ago, HOPE International, a Christ-centered global nonprofit that equips men and women to break the cycle of poverty for themselves and their community, gave out its first micro loan in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine. Just recently, Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, recounted the story of a Ukrainian blueberry farmer named Anastasiya. “Anastasiya decided not to let the war cause her to leave, which is a big deal,” said Rutt. “She had gotten a loan from HOPE prewar for seedlings for her blueberry farm, and in 2022, she was able to secure a second loan for irrigation to increase her crop.”

Last year, Anastasiya and her family

harvested their first blueberry crop. HOPE has given out a total of $1.2 million in Ukraine since the war began.

HOPE recently surpassed $1.6 billion in micro loans with the goal of restoring dignity in families’ lives. To raise funds to reach such goals, HOPE holds a yearly golf tournament. This year’s fundraiser will take place in three locations: Turf Valley Resort, Ellicott City, Md., at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14; Iron Valley Golf Club, Lebanon, on Friday, Sept. 15, at 7 a.m. and 1 p.m.; and Wyncote Golf Club, Oxford, on Sept. 15 at 8 a.m. Those who wish to register to play or who want to provide a sponsorship may do so at www.hopeinternational.org /golf by Friday, Sept. 1.

Rutt emphasized that HOPE focuses on all domains, not just the material but also personal, social, and spiritual. “It’s exciting to see what God can do through what He puts in the hands of the clients we serve around the world,” he said, adding that as the war in Ukraine continues to rage, HOPE continues to offer loans in that country and pray with clients. “God is working,” said Rutt. “We see more and more people coming to Christ through interaction with our teams and the churches even through the destruction and disillusionment of the war,” he said, adding that many people who had no interest in spiritual discussions prior to the war want to pray with the HOPE team. “I believe it will have an impact on the generations to come,” he said. Rutt pointed out that before the war, 5.5% of Ukrainians lived below the poverty line. That number is now at 24%, and it is estimated that it could take a decade for the Ukrainian economy to recover.

writer for HOPE International, said that the HOPE approach offers a sustainable way to alleviate poverty and positively impact a community.

“When someone takes out a loan or is saving money and starts a business, they start employing other people in the community,” she noted. Rutt added that sustainability is the reason HOPE has always avoided simply giving handouts to those in need. “We believe we can get to a

longer-lasting solution through allowing people to use the gifts that God put in our hands. We are interested in restoring dignity, not creating dependency.” To continue to make that happen, Rutt has set a goal of raising $1.5 million toward HOPE’s total budget of $36 million through the golf tournament. “It all happens through partnerships and sponsorships,” he said. “Contact us and help drive out poverty.”

The Giant Company, in partnership with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, recently announced the 23 recipients of its 2023 Healing the Planet program. The grants were awarded in support of projects that address food waste prevention, reduction and recovery across the Giant Com-

pany’s operating area. The recipients were named at an event held on June 22 at Dickinson College in Carlisle, which received $20,000 to complete an anaerobic digester project for conversion of community food waste and dairy manure into biogas and grid-tied electricity.

Grants range from $2,500 to $20,000. Projects located in the Giant Company’s operating areas within Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia were eligible. Funding for the grants was provided by customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores who rounded up their grocery purchase to the nearest dollar from March through May, benefiting program partners such as the Rodale Institute and Planet Bee Foundation.

“The push is to get bigger and more well-known bands to Terre Hill Days,” said John Styer, one of the organizers of the annual event. With that goal in mind, the Terre Hill Days committee reached out to sponsors this year. “We had a great response,” reported Styer. “The local business community stepped up.” The result is three headliner bands that meet the “bigger and well-known” requirements.

This year’s Terre Hill Days will be held in the Terre Hill Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill, on Thursday through Sunday, July 13 through 16. Events will open at 5 p.m. on July 13 and Friday, July 14, and at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 15. A church service and gathering will begin at 10:30 a.m. on July 16.

“On Thursday, we will have The Nomads,” said Styer, who noted the popular local eight-piece band will return to the venue at 7 p.m. on July

13. “On Friday, we will have The Jess Zimmerman Band,” Styer noted, pointing out that Nashville recording artist Jess Zimmerman sang at Terre Hill Days several years ago as part of a church praise team. The Jess Zimmerman Band will play starting at 6:30 p.m. on July 14. On July 15 at 6:30 p.m., the Josh Squared trio will grace the park stage with oldies, pop, and country music. “That will be fun for Saturday,” said Styer.

Carnival rides will be open all three nights again this year, and the event will kick off on July 13 with Joyful Canvas’ intricate face painting for children of all ages starting at 6 p.m. Other features that night will include Magic by Mr. Sneakers beginning at 7 p.m. Styer pointed out that the Friday evening car cruise is always popular. The Classic Car Cruise will open at 6 p.m. on July 14. There is no entry fee for car owners. “Just bring your car and park it and enjoy the band,” said Styer, who added that the Country Conjuring Magic Show will open at 6 p.m. as well.

On July 15, the event will open at 9 a.m. with a la carte breakfast items offered for sale in the pavilion. The arts and crafts fair will also open at 9 a.m., and at 11 a.m., live music will be provided by Saved Renegade. “We have entertainment Saturday afternoon,” said Styer, noting that Dutchyfunk, a New Orleans-style brass band, will play at 2 p.m. The airplane candy scramble will be held at 3:30 p.m. that day, with the tug of war scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The ax throwing in a controlled environment will be on site again this year, as well. Fireworks are planned for 10 p.m. on Saturday night.

“Fair food” that will be offered for sale at the event will include Mexican food, make-your-own snow cones, ice cream, fried Oreos, and funnel cakes. As in the past, the pavilion food stand will sell sausage sandwiches, soup, hamburgers, and hot dogs.

On Sunday, July 16, the church service in the park will begin at 10:30 a.m., and a community picnic will be held at noon. Terre Hill Days will provide hot dogs and beverages, and attendees are invited to bring a salad, hot dish, or dessert to share. The pavilion will be open for food items that need to be refrigerated or to plug in slow cookers. Entertainment during the picnic will be provided by Jim Conners at noon. Readers who would like more information may visit http://terre hilldays.com or call 717-445-4581.

Because of the store’s success, Shivery has been able to share with other local organizations in need. “We have been blessed with an abundance of donations from the outside community and consignment shops,” she reported. “I have been able to go to other clothing banks and drop off clothes, help Octorara with their shoe drive and I donated 22 prom dresses to the Pequea Valley Cinderella Closet.”

Limeville’s Blessings offers clothing for men, women and children from newborn up to teen sizes; an assortment of shoes in all sizes; clothes for men and women that are suitable for a job interview; baby equipment, including car seats; household goods like blankets, towels and sheets; and personal care items.

Anyone in need of assistance is welcome to visit the store, and no proof of income or residency is required. Visitors can also be put on the church’s prayer list.

Families are asked to come once a month for free items unless there are extenuating circumstances. “I just had a dad get full custody of his children, and he needed a little bit of everything,” said Shivery, adding, “I have been so blessed to be here. It really opens your eyes. People are going through a lot. A family was living in the hotel, and I was able to get toys for their kids.”

The store is located at the church but has its own entrance. “I tried to maximize the space, and I am still working on it. I just ordered another shelf, so the jeans will not be in bins anymore,” Shivery noted. “We had to trade our minivan for a truck because of the abundance of donations. I am here twice a week for three to four hours sorting.”

Those who visit the store are not required to join the church or make a donation, but they are welcome to do so if they wish. “If you want to come to church, you are welcome, but you

don’t have to do anything,” Shivery said, adding, “I have built such personal relationships with the people who come here. It’s like I gained a whole extra family by being here.”

The success of the ministry is evident from the numerous letters of gratitude received from clients. One mother wrote, “The Blessings Store helped my daughter and grandkids at Christmas. Without the help of the Blessings Store, my grandkids wouldn’t have had much of a Christmas.”

Another person wrote, “(I am) truly grateful for Limeville’s Blessings and all the people who put their time and love into this well organized, amazing heartful place.” Limeville’s Blessings is located at 5783 Limeville Road, Gap. The store is open on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donations for the store are accepted during operating hours or by appointment. One-Room Schoolhouses

Intercourse, PA 17534 Phone

Submitted by Leona Baker, HistoricalSocietyofSalisburyTownship

In early rural America, the educational norm was a one-room building presided over by a local teacher. Eight years of education was considered adequate for the farming and village lifestyle. Only boys attended, however, and girls learned their ABCs at home, if at all.

In 1834, the first Pennsylvania state free school law for children of the commonwealth was established. All children were to be educated at public expense. Specifically included was the female population. A tax, levied on all landowners of a district, would cover costs of buildings and teachers. Schoolhouses were to be primarily one-room buildings serving farm and village children “who lived within one mile of the school.”

With 25 to 50 children ages 6 to 15 in one crowded building, any single school in Salisbury Township might include English and German Protestants, as well as Amish and Mennonites from all parts of Europe. Many could not speak English. Despite these difficulties, educators

managed to accommodate a schedule that fulfilled the requirements of state mandates for each grade.

First on the agenda after unlocking the front door was to light a fire in the big stove after removing the ashes and coals of the previous day’s fire. Then, teachers had to sweep the floor, fill ink bottles, light the kerosene lamps and have lesson plans ready for each grade. All had to be ready for students who journeyed to school without regard for weather conditions. Reading, arithmetic, geography, spelling, penmanship and simple science were taught daily, with honor to God and country emphasized.

One student chore each day was carrying in wood or coal for the stove. Few schools had wells, so older students carried buckets to the

nearby farmer’s well or spring for fresh water. Often a yoke was used to lighten the weight of the water brought back and placed in a cooler.

A yoke is a wooden frame shaped to fit over the shoulders, with a notch to hold a pail or other burden at each end. By the 1900s, there may have been more than just one cup available at the school for the whole student body.

Order was a prime requirement of the presiding instructor. Deviation from an accepted norm might culminate in a student’s being shamed or ostracized. Improper recitation often led to sitting in a corner while wearing a dunce cap, which was a tall, triangular hat

that was hard to keep on. Another common disciplinary action was being spanked with a long, flat plank, which could be wielded to produce a memorable but not usually injurious thwack.

By the mid-20th century, rural Salisbury Township was changing, and the school board began considering a fully consolidated elementary school system. Salisbury Elementary School opened in 1962,
