Clock Sports New Paint efore Lenny Prange retired from working as a painter, he had a request. “A long time ago, I said to my boss, ‘If you ever get a chance to paint the Gap Town Clock, go after it because I would like to say I painted that,’” recalled Prange. Standing in front of the 65-foot tower that houses the 1872 Seth Thomas clock, Prange said Phil Hursh of Hursh Painting Company remembered the request. On June 2, with about a month left to work, Prange spent the day high in the air priming the tower, which is located at the intersection of Route 41 and Bridge Street in Gap. “We have three sides done at this point,” said Prange, who noted that the next day thunderstorms were predicted. “Friday or Monday we will be back,” said Prange. “We will prime the last side, put finish coats on, and then start trimming out.” Prange noted that the paint should continue to look good for about eight to 10 years.
Puppy Raisers Needed
Fifteen years after the clock was placed, the building was taken over by the sheriff. “Concerned townspeople stole the clock, and hid it in a nearby ice house,” said Stern. “In 1892, a 65-foot tower was built for the clock.” In 1953, the Gap Town Clock Association was formed when the clock tower appeared to be doomed by the widening of Route 41. “Once again, the citizens of the area banded together and moved the tower 75 feet to its present location,” said Stern. “It’s an interesting story.” Clock Association member John Hilton winds the clock regularly, with association president Glenn Kendig filling in when Hilton is unavailable. “John’s father used to wind it before he passed,” shared Stern. A nominal fee, which helps to preserve the clock tower, is asked of Gap Town Clock Association members. Those who would like more information may call 484-340-0116. Painter Lenny Prange fulfilled his wish to paint the Gap Town Clock before he retired.

“One of the reasons I wanted to start my own organization was to enable and empower volunteers to be involved in the whole process (of raising and training service dogs),” said Linzey Zoccola, who founded Phoenix Assistance Dogs (PAD) in 2009. Zoccola and assistant director Ashley Bosserman have recently begun working with dogs, volunteer trainers, and clients in the organization’s new Warwick Center offices in Lititz. Kathy Stern, secretary/treasurer of the Gap Town Clock Association, said that she let Prange choose the colors for the clock tower, which are traditional white with green trim on the window surrounds, the bottom and top of the tower, and the cornice at the bell housing. She said the group had considered maroon trim, but Prange was concerned that would fade too quickly. On April 9, Hursh contacted Stern and told her about the idea to paint the clock tower. “Phil (Hursh) donated all the paint and all the labor,” noted Stern. “We were really blessed with that.” Stern relayed the history of the clock, pointing out that it was originally placed on Penn Monument Hall (now home to the Town Clock Cheese Shoppe), located across Bridge Street from the clock. The brick building was named Penn Monument Hall because William Penn had made a historic visit to the area. “The clock was located (in the building) along historic Newport Pike, which is now Route 41,” explained Stern, who added that freight was hauled along the route from Tidewater Harbor to Newport, Del.

Part of the fun of owning an antique, vintage, or classic car is having a story to tell about that vehicle. Greg Dyer, who has been a head judge at the New Holland Antique Car, Gas Engine, and Tractor Show for 30 years, has a story about his 1963 Thunderbird, and his grandson Harry Townsend has a story to go with his 1987 Dodge D150 pickup. Both cars will be featured on the dash plaque for the 2021 car show, which will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland, on Sunday, July 11. The field will open for car parking at 9 a.m. According to organizer Steve Loewen, the theme of the show will be “1970-71 Muscle Cars.” “Those are the pinnacle years for muscle cars,” said Loewen. “We are calling it the Muscle Car Era.” Dyer and Townsend worked together to restore both the Thunderbird and the truck. Dyer first saw the Thunderbird as a middle school student when it was owned by the father of a classmate. “Years later, I worked with the guy who owned it. His sons had torn it apart, so when I bought it there was no engine, transmission, or interior,” Dyer explained, adding that the owner had all the parts. “That was 1994,” he recalled, standing proudly by the now-complete white Thunderbird with a black top and red interior. Townsend has been associated with the car show since he was featured in a newspaper photo in a miniature car as a child. He purchased his now brightly painted truck in February 2017 for $800. “It was my first truck,” recalled Townsend, whose grandfather added that in 2017 the then high school student did not yet have a driver’s license. “It barely ran, and it had a lot of rust,” Townsend said. “I am awfully proud of it (now).” Between 9 a.m. and noon on July 11, vintage cars will line up on the show field, while hit-and-miss engines and vintage tractors will be on view in the park. Antique tractors and hit-and-miss engines that are not being judged may be displayed free of charge. Cars will be judged in more than 30 classes. Judging for the People’s Choice Award will begin at noon and cease at 2 p.m. For a nominal fee, spectators may obtain a ballot and vote for their favorite car. The
Carl S. Sauder and Tom Wagner memorial awards will be given to cars chosen by designated judges at 3 p.m. The show is presented in partnership with the New Holland Band, and at 1 p.m., the New Holland Combo Band will perform. A variety of food items will be available for purchase, including bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwiches and coffee from 9 a.m. until noon. Other food that will be for sale at the event will include hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, french fries, and ice cream.

wheels and grinding stones. “In the early 1900s, the water wheels were replaced with water turbines,” explained Taylor. Conveyor belts took the meal upstairs to be sifted, with finer product used for food and coarser meal becoming animal feed. After Anna and Franklin moved out, the home was preserved as they left it for the sake of history. Among the artifacts they left behind is the Conestoga wagon bell Anna used to summon Franklin for lunch. Visitors can also see the summer kitchen where meals were cooked and the root cellar, which can keep eggs and butter at a constant temperature year-round. The children’s ice skates and the wedding flowers that belonged to Annie, Franklin and Anna’s mother, preserved in wax, are also on display. which processed both corn and wheat, was Franklin’s life work from the time he completed high school, with the exception of three years in the 1940s when he served in the U.S. Air Force. The mill also served as the Mascot Post Office and a community hub from 1890 to sometime in the 1930s. The name “Mascot” is associated with the post office, approved by John Wanamaker, who was postmaster general when the post office was set up. According to Taylor, the name “Mascot” was based on a dog in a play that Jacob and Annie Ressler parents of Anna and Franklin - saw when they traveled to New York City to be married by the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher. During a tour, Taylor explained the workings of the mill, noting that grain was stored on the second floor. “(Grain) was loaded in a barrel and hoisted up using waterpower,” she noted, adding that water was channeled to run the water

Linzey Zoccola (left) and Ashley Bosserman (right) are looking for a few good puppy raisers to help out Phoenix Assistance Dogs.
Many of the dogs that become PAD service dogs are goldadors - a mix of golden retrievers and Labrador retrievers. “We work with community breeders, and we breed as well in our program,” said Zoccola, who had 7week-old Luxor - named for the Pixar office lamp - and Barley at the center during the interview. “Both Sumatra, the mom, and Easton, the dad, are from our program,” explained Zoccola. “Puppy raisers need good communication skills,” explained Zoccola. “Almost any lifestyle and activity level is wonderful as long as the individual is eager to learn.” According to Zoccola, the only other qualifications are that someone in the household be able to drive the puppy to the vet and to the center for training and that the raisers have internet access for training purposes, since the puppy raiser manual is online. “We have had wonderful teenage puppy raisers and wonderful retired puppy raisers,” said Zoccola, who noted that active families with small children are welcome as well. Bosserman noted that puppy raisers are required to attend two lessons a month at the Lititz location to work with PAD trainers. She specified that puppy raisers help dogs learn all the skills they need as service dogs beginning with sit and stay, and, when the dog is older, how to open doors and shut off lights. “We cover a lot (of expenses) for our puppy raisers,” she said, pointing out that food, vet costs, and grooming are included. “(Puppy raisers) need to provide treats, toys, dog beds, and lots of love,” she said. PAD has developed a timeline for puppies that matches them with puppy raisers at two months old after they have begun to be housetrained. At 12 months, the
dogs undergo an evaluation, and at 14 months, X-rays are taken of hips and elbows, which are then evaluated by orthopedic veterinarians befor the dogs move forward with the program. Because it’s very important to PAD that clients are partnered with dogs that can meet their needs, it can take several rounds of clients meeting puppies before a match is made. “It depends on what the puppy needs to learn to make a final placement,” explained Zoccola, who noted a smaller female dog with an upbeat personality would not be matched with an individual who has weightbearing mobility issues. “We would look for individuals who need retrieving and door opening (for that dog),” she said, adding that during meetings PAD representatives and puppy raisers examine dog and client interaction. “We are looking at the individual’s body language when they’re working with the dog,” she noted. “We are watching how the dog is interacting with that individual.” Zoccola added that puppy raisers have input into this process. “We help them to learn what we’re looking for, and together we match that dog with someone with a disability,” she said. Readers who would like to learn more may visit http://padcentral.org or search for “Phoenix Assistance Dogs” on Facebook.

Members of the troop spent a weekend at Ole Bull State Park and Cherry Springs State Park in early May. Cherry Springs is a designated dark sky park in Coudersport. At this location, the girls participated in a stargazing event, where they saw the planet Mars; numerous constellations and clusters, including the Big and Little Dippers; satellites moving across the sky; and more stars than they had ever seen at one time. The girls also learned about light pollution and its effects on wildlife. In May, troop members helped Girl Scouts of the USA work toward its goal to plant 5 million trees by 2026. Members of Troop 70569 volunteered at Camp Furnace Hills, where they created a flyer about the benefits of planting native trees.

Giant Expands Flashfood App Availability The Giant Company recently announced that it is rolling out the Flashfood app to all Giant and Martin’s stores following a successful pilot. Designed to reduce food waste and help customers save money on fresh food items nearing their best-before date, the Flashfood partnership has helped the Giant Company divert more than 250,000 pounds of food waste from landfills. The Flashfood app allows shoppers to purchase fresh food, including produce, meat, deli and bakery products that are nearing their best-before date at significantly reduced prices. First introduced in May at four Giant stores in Lancaster, Flashfood is currently available at more than 30 stores. The rollout will place Flashfood at 170 participating Giant and Martin’s stores by fall. The chainwide rollout of Flashfood begins with stores in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, with additional stores joining each month. By downloading the Flashfood app, which is free on iOS and Android, shoppers can browse deals on fresh items that are nearing their bestbefore dates. Purchases are then made directly through the app and shoppers pick up their order the same day from the Flashfood zone located inside the participating Giant or Martin’s store. In addition to the Flashfood app, Giant also has recycling and donation programs in place. Last year alone, through Giant’s Meat the Needs program and in partnership with Feeding America, more than five million pounds of safe, consumable fresh food that would have otherwise gone unsold was frozen and donated to regional food bank partners.
