Making School Readiness A Priority By Ann Mead Ash
Building Braves Early Learning Program staff engage with area parents and children at open gym programs (left photo). Since COVID-19 restrictions were put in place, home visits by staff have been offered virtually (right photo). The program is designed to connect families in the Pequea Valley School District with children from birth through age 5 with resources to help them transition into kindergarten.
FORM Returns To HOHC Roots
PEQ
In 2016, House of His Creation (HOHC) became Family of Restoration Ministries (FORM). Shortly thereafter, the ministry moved from its location on Lititz Pike to 541 W. 28th Division Highway, Lititz. At the time, House of His Creation still existed as a maternity home on the new property, serving
women age 18 and older. Loving and Caring Resources, which also came under the FORM umbrella, held on-site classes including The Parenting Journey See HOHC pg 11
Matthew Neff (left), executive director of House of His Creation (HOHC), and Callie Neff, housing support specialist, stand beside the sign at the ministry’s location in northern Lititz. After using the name Family of Restoration Ministries for several years, HOHC is returning to its roots by providing housing for women in certain circumstances.

Now more than ever, thanks to jobs and wages lost while the stay-at-home order was in place, resources for people experiencing homelessness or at risk of
losing their homes are in demand. Thankfully, Good Samaritan Services (GSS), which serves individuals and families in Lancaster and Chester counties who have poverty-related needs, is prepared to help. See Golf Outing pg 8

Lisa Eckert, director of early learning for the Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), is excited about all that the Pequea Valley Building Braves Early Learning Programs offer even though the program has taken a different form over the last few months. “At this point, Little Braves activities are virtual,” said Eckert, who works alongside early learning advocate Cherie Oswald, a Community Action Partnership employee, in The Factory Ministries, located at the Together Community Center (TCC), 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. “The early learning program focuses on all families in PVSD that (have children who are) prenatal through age 5,” said Eckert. “Our goal is to connect with those families and provide resources to See Early Learning pg 5

Camp Invention Will Go Virtual Camp Invention, a nationally recognized, nonprofit summer enrichment camp program, is changing its in-person program at two local sites to an all-new, at-home edition of the program called Camp Invention Connect. Camp Invention Connect balances active, independent handson exploration with opportunities for socialization from home. The programs scheduled at Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 and Cornwall Elementary School will be changed to Camp Invention Connect instead. Both programs will run from Monday, July 13, through Friday, July 17. A hybrid program featuring both offline activities and optional online sessions, Camp Invention Connect enables
hands-on exploration by delivering a set of four activity kits, packed full of materials, directly to each participant. The themed kits, based on the 2020 Elevate curriculum from Camp Invention, include materials designed to bring imagination, creative problem solving, and fun to children. The 2020 curriculum includes the modules Camp Invention Flight Lab, Design Thinking Project, Rescue Squad, and Camp Invention Champions. Young innovators choosing the Camp Invention Connect experience will take on indoor and outdoor challenges that minimize screen time and maximize creativity, collaborate virtually with friends to complete exciting challenges, and receive real-time
coaching and collaboration with certified educators. For more information on Camp Invention Connect or to register for the program, readers may visit www.invent.org/connect. A program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame in partnership with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Camp Invention challenges children in kindergarten through grade six to find their inner inventor by learning the process of innovation. Using hands-on activities, Camp Invention promotes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning; seeks to build confidence, leadership, perseverance, resourcefulness, and problem-solving skills; and encourages entrepreneurship.

Early Learning from pg 1 are important to provide to your child as an infant,” said Eckert. When the kit is delivered, parents are informed about other Building Braves Early Learning Programs, including the free home visit program called Parents As Teachers. “Home visits include parent/child activities, child development education, and family well-being (information),” said Eckert. “We teach and help provide activities for parents to work with their children,” she said. Little Braves Open Gym provides space for families to play
books in a safe manner. Because it was not possible to hold summer play groups, the activities are detailed for parents at the PVSD website. Other programs include a partnership with Plant the Seed of Learning, which is targeted for children from birth to age 2, and Grow the Seed of Learning for children ages 2 to 4. While the programs were previously held at the Pequea Valley Public Library, Eckert said they hope to hold the programs at TCC in the future. Kindergarten Workshops are geared to four- and five-year-olds who are preparing to enter kindergarten. The workshops

With Lancaster County officially in the green phase, the Strasburg Community Park, 15 Precision Ave., Strasburg, plans to hold its first concert of the season on Saturday, July 25, with the New Orleans style romp music of Lancaster’s own Big Boy Brass Band. The concert for Saturday, July 11, has been postponed. Per current Pennsylvania and CDC guidelines, there will be an event limit of 250 people. Attendees should practice social distancing and are encouraged to wear masks. The Strasburg Community Parks Foundation will continue to monitor safety updates and guidelines regarding COVID-19. All plans are subject to change based on current safety updates or inclement weather. For more information or concert guidelines, readers may visit www.strasburgpark.org.

Eckert said she connects with advocates at The Factory to aid area families when needed. “Everybody works together to provide this program,” she commented. “We focus on the family as a whole and make sure they have resources and community connections.” Readers who would like to know more about the program may visit www.pequeavalley.org and click on “Early Learning.” Eckert may be reached at 717-381-5020 or at lisa_eckert@ pequeavalley.org.

The Building Braves Early Learning Program also participates with the Imagination Library, through a partnership with the Literacy Council of Lancaster. “Any child from birth to age 5 is eligible,” said Eckert, who noted that the program delivers one free book a month to the child’s home until he or she turns 5. “We submit an application (for the parents),” explained Eckert. Although the district does not have a preschool, a Head Start program is located at TCC, and a Pre-K Counts program is at Pequea Valley Intermediate School. Eckert also is in touch with private preschools in the district. “The goal is to bridge the gap before children come to kindergarten by connecting them with preschools,” said Eckert. The program starts with a Welcome Baby Brave kit that is presented to anyone in PVSD who has had a baby recently. “(The kit) includes books, resources, toys, activities (to let parents know) these are the things that

Eckert noted that circle time and a snack are included and that the Little Braves Book Club grew out of the open gym. “Each session, they received a book,” said Eckert, who added that a child development information sheet devoted to the topic covered during the gym time was also included. “It could be cognitive development or social emotional development,” said Eckert, who noted that the handout included an activity to do at home. “We provide a wide spectrum of services that are customizable to each individual or family at whatever place they are at in their journey to stability,” said Shadoe Settle, GSS development and communications coordinator. “Our services are always expanding. Right now, we provide emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support services to men, women, and families in Lancaster and Chester counties. Serving men is a new ability in Lancaster County, and we are very excited about it.”

Although the need for the services provided by GSS has increased, the organization has been able to keep the lives of its existing participants stable, thanks to support from the community. “Our ability to provide support and guidance during this time enabled all of our participants to remain in their housing, pay their bills, and continue life as normally as possible during such an abnormal time,” Settle said. As with other organizations, the delivery of services had to change, requiring flexibility from both the GSS team members and participants. GSS continued to provide emergency shelter and residential housing services while maintaining state-issued safety requirements and conducting cautious intakes for new clients. GSS family resource coordinators met with participants via Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp, and other virtual-meeting software to provide housing support services. The financial impact of COVID19 will be felt for a long time to come, and GSS expects the need for its services to increase, Settle said. The nonprofit organization
depends on donations and fundraisers to operate. One such fundraiser is the golf outing hosted by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). “Our partnership with EPC and their willingness to organize such a wonderful event has been an incredible blessing, financially and relationally,” Settle remarked. “This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, and it has continued to provide funds needed to perform all of our services.” “We recognize the impact that this nonprofit has on our own neighbors in the same areas that we serve as a company,” said EPC marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “We’re honored to build this relationship with GSS to assist them in aiding families right here in our community.” The 2019 EPC Golf Outing raised $20,000, and the goal this year is to meet or surpass that total with the help of golfers and sponsors, Hillegas said. The 13th annual EPC Golf Outing will be held on Friday, Sept. 25, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times of 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. are available. The event had initially been planned for June.
“Like many other events this year, we were faced with the decision to cancel or reschedule our event,” Hillegas commented. “We know how much this event impacts families right here in our Lancaster County and Chester County communities, so we made the decision to reschedule the June outing for September. The health and safety of our golfers and volunteers was the main driving force behind this decision, and we look forward to what a fall golf outing for this event will look like.” The Tee It Forward contest hole that was introduced last year will be continued. Hillegas noted that while this year’s event will include bag lunches from Trio Bar and Grill, chicken barbecue from Peters’ BBQ will also be available. Chicken barbecue had been a feature of the EPC Golf Outings a few years ago, and Hillegas and her team are pleased to bring it back. For more information about the EPC Golf Outing, to register to play, or to sponsor the event, readers may visit www.epc golfouting.com. within each item to view all pictures and read item descriptions. The pieces available range in size, medium used and subject matter. New this year is the paintbrush pull. For a set cost per numbered paintbrush, or for a separate cost for a bundle of six, bidders will be entered into a drawing for an original alcohol ink by Heart Artists Dan K. and Lydia L., titled “Green as the Summertime Grass.” The winning paintbrush will be pulled at the conclusion of the auction. Other opportunities to make an impact on the Heart artists, instructors and volunteers include three fund-a-need opportunities to enhance the studio experience for all: a collection of 12 individual drafting tables with adjustable tops, a professional studio drying rack and a necessary studio re-design. The Friendship Heart Studio is a day program which celebrates personalities and talents through free expression and collaboration. More than 70 artists work with professionals and volunteers to create masterpieces while developing a sense of purpose, value and freedom. The studio embodies its vision of “expressing capabilities” by promoting artistic skills and self-expression through various techniques while utilizing both traditional and unconventional media. Pieces that pass the juried process are then showcased in monthly, themed exhibits in the Friendship Heart Gallery in Lancaster, featured at the Friendship Heart Gallery in Lititz, highlighted in community art shows and exhibitions and/or housed in individual portfolios. Each piece of artwork that sells helps Heart Artists gain financial responsibility and independence. In addition to the original pieces of art by the Heart Artists, both gallery locations also offer pieces for sale from other local artists. According to Dan Fink, director of marketing and public relations for the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, this is just the second time that Schreiber has received a $250,000 matching grant in its 84-year history, and both times it has come from the Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation. “This one comes at a critical moment for us as we work to navigate a COVID-19 world,” Fink remarked. “Like many nonprofits, we’re facing a challenging period in the next 12 months.” The grant will provide a dollarfor-dollar match for all the money raised by Schreiber starting June 11, when the Stabler Foundation forwarded its approval. Stabler has committed up to $250,000, and Schreiber has one year to raise the matching funds. The initial $250,000 grant combined with what Schreiber hopes to raise from the community would mean $500,000 for the local
organization, matching the amount generated from a similar grant by the Stabler Foundation in 2016. That grant was the largest contribution toward adding an infant room to Schreiber’s Circle of Friends Academy child care center. “This grant couldn’t have come at a better time for Schreiber,” said Schreiber president James DeBord. “Obviously, with everything happening around COVID19, raising revenue is even more of a concern than usual. The community rallied around us, as it always does, these past three months, but we don’t know what challenges are ahead of us. This grant and the matching dollars it generates will give us a significant boost at a critical time in our fundraising.” Schreiber has gradually phased in services in various departments. It has been open and providing limited therapy and behavioral health services, primarily through telehealth sessions, since early April. Circle of Friends Academy reopened on June 8. Camp Schreiber began operating virtually on June 22. In addition, some Schreiber fundraising events that were limited, delayed, or postponed are finding new dates. The softball

Additionally, Schreiber has moved its iconic Rubber Duckie Race online. This year’s race would have been the 32nd event, but the tens of thousands of racing ducks will not take their trip down the Conestoga River at Lancaster County Central Park. Instead, a special online duckie event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13, to determine prize winners. Tickets went on sale July 1 and will be available at www.schreiberpediatric.org/ events/duckies or in person at Duckie Central, also known as Schreiber’s financial development office, 610 Community Way, Lancaster. Ticket sales will end on Saturday, Sept. 12. Proceeds from ticket sales will be matched by the Stabler grant. COVID-19 prompted the shift to a virtual duckie race, and there will be other ways this year’s event will look different. Schreiber supporters are encouraged to purchase tickets online to limit personal contact during duckie transactions. Fun, new content, particularly contests and biographies of some of this year’s souvenir duckies, will be posted on the aforementioned website. Additionally, Schreiber has a new Duckie Mobile that will travel around Lancaster County selling duckies and bringing other excitement to neighborhoods. This year’s theme is “Choose Your Own Adventure” and features some of the most popular souvenir duckies from recent years, including dinosaurs, unicorns, and cows. To honor health care heroes, doctors, nurses and other medical duckies are available as well. The Schreiber Center is a nonprofit organization that aims to offer the finest in innovative therapy, education, and recreation resources for children, teenagers, and young adults. For more information about the center, readers may visit www.schreiberpediatric.org.

and the Beautiful You events. In December 2019, the ministry decided to make another change. “We will be back to solely operating as HOHC,” read a letter from Matthew Neff, executive director. Loving and Caring Resources services will continue to be present and active at the site. Callie Neff, housing support specialist with HOHC, explained the transition. “We had become more of a teaching, training, and equipping kind of ministry (as FORM),” she noted. “We wanted to focus back on our primary mission, which is housing.” Over the nearly 50 years since HOHC was founded, the ministry mainly offered maternity housing with a mother and child component. The Neffs served at the house on Lititz Pike in that capacity. “We were living with young teen moms,” recalled Callie, “(but) who was calling (for help) changed.”
the future while being out of the (unsafe) circumstances,” Matthew said. Callie summed up the changes in the ministry, saying, “It has expanded beyond the limitation of calling just because of a pregnancy. A lot of the same factors are at work in the lives of these women, and the path to finding a way out is generally the same.” She added that a safe place and healthy supports are available to clients of HOHC. “We have the added bonus of the years of experience walking through pregnancies. That’s been our foundation,” she said. Current needs of the ministry include new doors for the apartments. “I would love to have a new door campaign,” said Matthew. “Doors cost up to $300 each, and we need 14 for six apartment units.” He noted that individuals could sponsor a single door or builders could donate excess inventory. Readers who would like more information about the ministry may visit www.hohc.org.

stay for a few weeks. “The apartments are being shifted so that some of the rooms are designated for ministry purposes for women escaping (exploitation, human trafficking, or abuse),” said Callie. “They need that first stop to work through the crisis and figure out what’s next.” Matthew noted that as apartments become available, more will be open to the increased need for women in the Manheim, Ephrata, Warwick, and Manheim Township areas who have been seeking help in the last year. Once the crisis has passed, the ministry can help a woman begin to work toward goals. “It may be finding a program or housing,” said Callie. Matthew added that a woman need not have children to turn to the ministry for help, but he noted that children are often a motivating factor in leaving an unsafe situation. “(We can offer a place) for her and the children to sleep safely, and they have the chance to plan

PENNYSAVER Women who are in need of help now are usually between the ages of 18 to 24 and come from a variety of backgrounds, but they have a common need - a shortterm safe place to regroup. While there are an abundance of services in the Lancaster area, there is also great need. “For a woman to be told we should have an opening in two weeks - that’s too long,” said Matthew. “ We can fill in those two weeks,” added Callie, who noted that HOHC will function with two different on-site models. First, the stone house will remain available for pregnant women. Bedrooms are available in the house where women can be served in a family model. “They live with our family and we offer case management, transportation, and the whole gamut of social services and support,” said Callie. The second model will be apartments located on the property that can fill the gap for women who need a safe place to

VisionCorps Produces Masks VisionCorps is now producing non-surgical, reusable face masks to help during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been awarded production orders and contracts by Lancaster County and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. VisionCorps already had a sewing production line and was able to transition and ramp up quickly to begin producing masks and have the capacity to produce more, if needed. A recent order with Lancaster County calls for VisionCorps to produce 50,000 masks. The face masks are also available for purchase by Commonwealth of Pennsylvania agencies and municipalities and are listed on UniqueSource, the required sourcing site for products and services purchased and used by state entities. VisionCorps is completing state contracts for masks and expects additional business opportunities. The masks are made of cloth and elastic and can be washed and reused. They meet mask specifications put out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and personal protective equipment (PPE) guidelines. The new face mask production is part of the VisionCorps’ Enterprise Group (EG) production lines, creating employment opportunities primarily for individuals who are blind or vision-impaired. The EG business lines also help fund services for people who are blind or vision-impaired in Lancaster, Chester, Lebanon, York, and Adams counties.
VisionCorps’ mask production line partnered with Dutchware, a local company, in a new collaboration to cut out the patterns for the face masks. VisionCorps sends Dutchware rolls of material and the company uses its laser cutters and stacking equipment to cut out mask patterns. Nonprofits and other tax-exempt groups are invited to contact
VisionCorps at orders@vision corps.net to purchase face masks. The masks are available in packs of 50 and can be purchased by searching for “Non-Surgical Face Masks with elastic” at www.co store.com/UniqueSourceStore/wel come.asp. Organizations that need smaller quantities may be interested in working with another group and sharing the face masks.

Renewable Energy Laboratory’s InSPIRE study, where scientists measure and track the performance of the pollinator-friendly ground cover for applications to future solar energy projects. In addition to the benefits of the plants, the new solar array coupled with the one currently installed on the roof of the Giant Company headquarters will reduce 4.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide in the environment and generate enough power for the entire building. Native seed mixes provided by Ernst Conservation Seeds will act as a vegetative solution to beautify the site and provide valuable ecological functions. The Giant Company hopes the native meadow established will create a habitat for pollinators, birds and other small wildlife while improving the quality of the soil beneath it, reducing runoff and creating an attractive backdrop to the site. The field includes more than 20 varieties of wildflowers native to the northeast and central Pennsylvania like butterfly milkweed, mountain mint, blue mistflower and golden Alexander. Robin Ernst, president of Ernst Pollinator Service, explained that as the field matures over the next few years, more than one million pollinator-attracting plants will provide pollen and nectar sources for honey bees and other pollinators, which will in turn pollinate local farm fields. The Giant Company also announced a new strategic partnership with Planet Bee Foundation. Based in San Francisco, Planet Bee is a nonprofit organization focused on driving awareness for pollinators while creating environmental stewards of all ages, in turn contributing to the well-being of bees. In celebration of the new partnership and National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company announced a $50,000 donation to Planet Bee Foundation. Planet Bee Foundation has constructed the beehives for the pollinator-friendly solar field and will tend to the health of the colonies as the bees provide their essential pollinator services to the local ecosystem. The foundation is also helping the Giant Company develop educational signs that will be installed along the on-campus walking path to drive awareness about the importance of bees to the grocery and agricultural supply chains.
