Long before Cavod’s musical theater camps begin, the students who are participating are cast in a show, receive the script, take part in a read-through, and begin to learn their lines. “On the first day of camp, (students) come with the dialogue memorized, and then we choreograph and polish,” said Cordell Huyard, who oversees the camps for Cavod and is directing Disney’s “High School Musical Jr.,” which will be performed by students taking part in the camp being held from Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day at Cavod in New Holland. The camp will culminate with the show being presented in the Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, and at the same times on Sunday, July 28. A limited budget or scant vacation time does not have to mean a dismal summer. In fact, local folks may virtually go around the world in just four hours at the 24th annual Global Fair set for Saturday, July 13, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the 1719 Hans Herr House and Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. Hosted by Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM), Global Fair is an international missions and culture event, but it has been updated for 2019. It will still include information about other cultures, opportunities to talk to mission workers and hear their stories about God at work around the world, international food from a wide variety of countries, and activities for children. But there will also be new events and See Global Fair pg 6

focuses on two teenagers - Troy Bolton, played by Noah Durling, and Gabriella Montez, played by Emily Andersen who have never tried out to be in a show before. Gabriella is a shy, geeky math whiz, and Troy is a basketball star. “The (campers, who are ages 10 to 18) have grown up watching (‘High School Musical’) and listening to the music,” shared Huyard. “The characters are relatable.” The story opens when Troy and Gabriella meet at a ski lodge on New Year’s Eve. They sing karaoke together and exchange phone numbers. When the students return to school, Troy notices Gabriella in his homeroom and learns that she has transferred to East High School. Both decide to try out for parts in the school musical, and, despite a few mishaps, both are offered callbacks for the lead characters. Nearly 70 4-H members, club leaders and parents participated in the annual Chester County 4H Livestock Judging Contest hosted by Penn State Extension’s 4-H Youth Development program in Chester County at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook on June 6. Livestock judging is the evaluation of an animal’s characteristics in comparison to the ideal standard. Contestants judged the animals on their ability to produce high quality offspring and their potential meat production.
Contestants were separated into three divisions to compete: adults, age 19 and up; seniors, ages 14 to 18; and juniors, ages 8 to 13. Then the individuals judged a total of six classes consisting of Angus heifers, Angus steers, crossbred ewe lambs, fall Suffolk ewe lambs, market goats and market hogs. The top overall junior individuals were: first place, Jeremiah Howe, Downingtown; second place, Georgia Horosky, Saint Peters; third place, Ridan Kerner, Birdsboro; fourth place, Alexis

Cavod Campers from pg 1 brother, Ryan Evans, played by Ethan Sommers, decide to interfere with the auditions and eliminate competition for the leading roles they aspire to fill. The show boasts 10 songs, many which are high in energy. Showstopping numbers include “Stick to the Status Quo” and “Breaking Free,” which will feature the two leads joined by the entire company, along with “We’re All in This Together.” Although campers are familiar with the music, Huyard noted that some of the songs are not easy. “The boys have to sing very high and the girls low,” said Huyard. “For developing voices, that can be challenging.” Hannah Stone will serve as music director for the show, and Cavod instructor Julie Haney will choreograph the dance numbers. Huyard chose the Disney Channel favorite for a number of reasons. Among them, he likes how the musical delves beyond the surface of high school life. “It pokes fun at all the high school stereotypes,” said Huyard, referencing jocks, geeks, and those who have enthusiasm for music and theater. “As you go deeper, there’s more than that. There are (students) who feel they have to fit into this one group, but this show explores how you can be a combination of things,” he explained. “I related to that in high school.” For those unfamiliar with the show, Huyard described it as “Hairspray,” “Grease,” and “Footloose” smashed together. “It’s a sanitized Disney version of that,” he said. Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at https://cavod.org or by calling 717-354-3355. Tickets may also be available at the door.

Global Fair from pg 1 exhibits that are intended to be family-friendly, fun, and interactive. “One new feature is a world stage that will feature a range of entertainment,” said Kaylene Derksen, development director and member of the events committee. “The always-popular
Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster will sing international musical selections, and the Harrisburg STEP group will give a lively performance. There will be Korean music, drumming, and dancing as well as several other international acts.” A highlight for children - as
well as adult visitors - over the years has been the alpacas brought by Eastland Alpacas. The fiber animals will return to Global Fair again. Joining the alpacas will be “residents” from the Nature Center at Black Rock Retreat in Quarryville, which may include snakes, turtles, lizards, a rabbit, and a bird. Children will have the opportunity to earn free ice cream through a
scavenger hunt while they are also learning about the world. Another change to Global Fair is a different layout. Rather than organizing the fair into geographic regions as in the past, there will be four new areas: The lively Global Village will feature workers from around the world and various community organizations. The Adventure Zone will have the petting zoo and
Anniversary
children’s activities. The World Stage will offer entertainment throughout the day. The International Food Court will sell food from more than a dozen places. “The food is a favorite part of the fair for many people,” Derksen commented. “To be able to enjoy amazing food from East and West Africa, Nepal, Latin America, or Europe in the same location is quite unique. From injera to pinchos and from stroopies to hot dogs, you’ll find it at Global Fair.” EMM president Gerry Keener pointed out that one of the purposes of Global Fair is to promote understanding of other cultures and people. “The more exposure and knowledge we have of others who may be different from us, the more our worldview expands,” Keener remarked. “This is especially important for children. I believe when there’s more opportunity for
appreciation and awareness, it can result in increased kindness and love for one another.” Parking will be free of charge, and admission will be by donation. Proceeds will be used to fund the fair in future years. Folks who attend Global Fair will also receive a bit of a bonus. “It’s a bit of a well-kept secret that visitors to Global Fair may also enjoy the 1719 Hans Herr House and Museum and the grounds, including the Native American longhouse, without the customary admission fee,” Derksen said. For more information about Global Fair, readers may visit www.emm.org/globalfair. EMM is headquartered at 53 W. Brandt Blvd., Salunga. Its mission is to cross cultures, engage the world, and make disciples of Jesus Christ. To learn more, folks may call 717-898-2251 or visit www.emm.org.

Baptisms are an important part of TTC/Potter’s House’s annual pig roast benefit. The organization is a nonprofit, Christ-centered ministry that offers a holistic approach to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of pre-release and post-release prisoners and individuals desiring to overcome addictions.
Program from pg 8 served more than 200 children. Last year the center enrolled more than 30 children, the capacity for the center, which operates on a small budget and is funded in large measure from the local fundraising efforts undertaken by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection and the board of governors that oversees the program. The cost to tutor a child each year averages about $6,000, and the center has a waitlist of about 20 children. The center also offers free training for adults to receive a Certified Dyslexia Practitioner 1 certificate. Fundraising efforts currently include the annual Lancaster W. Scott Stoner Memorial Children’s Dyslexia Center Walk in October, the Extraordinary Give in November, and car wash coupons to Mr. Car Wash in December. The center hopes to expand its fundraising efforts in order to accommodate the increasing number of children who have a need. Dates for fundraisers are available at http://childrens dyslexiacenteroflancaster.org or by searching for “Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster” on Facebook. Readers may call 717-481-5680 or email cdclancasterpa@gmail.com for information about the center.

that can each house eight clients as well as a director’s home and a pavilion. Phase one of the building plan includes the first group home and the director’s house. Phase two includes the second group home and the pavilion. The organization hopes to have the first group home completed and functioning by January 2020. Hoover noted that at TTC/Potter’s House treatment does not focus solely on an individual’s addiction. “We keep … indicating that we don’t just see the addiction as the problem,” explained Hoover. “There are factors that contribute to why some people resort to chemicals. Our purpose is to help individuals find freedom from the factors that led them into addictive behavior.” Rob Weatherholtz, associate director for TTC/Potter’s House, sees the pig roast bringing together members of every facet of the community, including business owners, church, members of the military, bikers, families, and government leaders. “Everyone is involved,” said Weatherholtz. “It is the whole kingdom working together.” He noted that the atmosphere of the pig roast reflects a certain strength. “There’s a presence at that event that is undeniably the spirit of God working,” he said. “It’s just powerful.” Hoover agreed. “It’s an expression of God’s heart for the community to pull together,” he said. “This is our problem, so we will have to pull together to become part of the answer.” Attendance at the pig roast is by suggested donation. More information about the event may be found at www.transitiontocommunity.com/pigroastbenefit2019. nonprofit, Christ-centered ministry that offers a holistic approach to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of prerelease and post-release prisoners and individuals desiring to overcome addictions, will hold the event at West Earl Community Park, 189 S. State St., Leola, because permits have been granted and construction has begun at the Still Waters site. The pig roast benefit will be held on Saturday, July 27, from noon to 4 p.m. Vans will be available to take attendees for tours at the Still Waters site a short distance away. For the more adventurous, kayaks and canoes will be available to paddle upriver to the site. The schedule for the drop-in experience will include a special 2 p.m. program with live worship music, testimonies, and a speaker. Lloyd Hoover, executive director of TTC/Potter’s House, plans to discuss hope in the face of addiction issues. “The basic essence (is) us needing to recognize the seriousness of the impact of (addiction) on our communities,” said Hoover, “ … and to recognize that there is a way to respond. We are not hopeless or helpless.” At 3 p.m., baptisms will occur in the river that runs through the park. Hoover explained, “It’s a culmination time of us recognizing that in order to find wholeness there is a necessity to put the past behind … and to connect with God’s saving grace as the higher power that we need in order to overcome the issues of the past, the roots of addiction, and to find promise and hope for the future.” The meal, which will be served throughout the event, will include roasted pig with Mama Elaine’s Almost Famous Sloppin’ Sauce, assorted side dishes, beverages, and desserts. The construction of Still Waters will be the culmination of a 15-year dream for the ministry. The plan calls for two buildings

Giant Introduces PA Preferred Shelf Tags To make it easier for customers to find products that have been grown or produced in Pennsylvania, Giant Food Stores has introduced PA Preferred shelf tags at all of its 156 stores located within Pennsylvania. PA Preferred is the official brand of food and agricultural products grown, produced, or processed in Pennsylvania. Giant has supported the program, which is designed to help the state’s farmers and food suppliers grow their businesses, since its inception in 2004. Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding recently joined Giant vice president and chief marketing officer Matt Simon at a press conference in Camp Hill to unveil the shelf tag program. More than 900 items, including meat, poultry, dairy, snacks, condiments, sauces, and even pet food, are now identified by
tags with the PA Preferred logo displayed at the shelf level, helping customers to identify Pennsylvania products. The PA Preferred shelf tags will be displayed in stores year-round. With the arrival of the local produce season in its stores, Giant also plans to recognize local farmers through a multifaceted marketing campaign that includes in-store signage and displays, social and digital media, TV and radio advertising, billboards, and the company’s in-store Savory magazine. From farm names to state identifier stickers and imagery showcasing the season’s harvest, the campaign aims to highlight the stories behind the farms and people responsible for bringing the products to stores. Bicycling across the United States has always been a dream of Erin Steinweg’s, and this summer that dream will come to fruition as she and her fiancé, Garrett Collins, make the trek across the country. The pair will fly to the West Coast in August to set off on a self-supported bicycle ride from Eugene, Ore., to Yorktown, Va. Steinweg and Collins will be on the road for approximately 60 days to cover a total of 4,200 miles - all while carrying their own tents, sleeping bags, and other supplies. “We weren’t sure when we would get to do it, because there are three main things you need to do a trip like this: time, money, and health,” explained Collins. “But we both had time off and everything else just came into place, so we’re really excited to be going now.” Steinweg, 22, graduated from Manheim Central High School in 2015 and from Messiah College in May with a degree in biology. Steinweg is in the process of

applying to physician assistant graduate programs. Collins, 24, graduated from Lebanon Valley College with his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in May and decided to delay his job search a bit so he and Steinweg could bike across the country. Collins, who completed a portion of this bicycling journey with a friend a few years ago, noted, “It’s really amazing some of the people you’ll meet along the way.” For Collins, that included someone trying to set a record while riding a unicycle and members of a group from Harvard University who were using bicycle touring to travel into various parts of the country to teach at-risk children. As Steinweg and Collins ride, they will be raising awareness of and money for Lifecycles, a mentoring program based in Lancaster County that uses bicycling as a means to instill character in young adults. “We wanted to use this trip as an opportunity to raise money for an organization that brings honor to God,” Steinweg shared. “We wanted to make it bigger than just ourselves.” Volunteers from Lifecycles lead weekly rides for teenage boys in Landisville, Marietta, and New Holland and for girls in Lititz. A free meal is served, and bicycles, helmets, and shirts are supplied for all participants. Plus, Lifecycles organizes annual summer challenge rides for participants. Lifecycles leaders are planning to embark on a crosscountry bicycle tour with a group of boys next summer. Steinweg and Collins are hoping that their own journey will inspire those riders as they train and prepare. “We want to show them that anyone can do it,” said Collins. Training for Steinweg and Collins has mostly consisted of lots of bicycle rides. Meals will generally be purchased from gas station convenience stores, with the occasional sit-down meal to refuel. Generators that attach to and are powered by bicycle wheels will enable Steinweg and Collins to keep their phones charged. The pair plans to utilize an app called Warm Showers that connects bicycle tourists worldwide with hosts that offer free hospitality whether a place to wash up, get a beverage, or spend the night. “A lot of churches will open up their doors too, letting cyclists utilize their youth centers or other spaces like a hostel,” Collins noted. The cross-country ride is not the first incredible physical feat for either Steinweg or Collins, who first met while competing in the annual Lititz recCenter adult triathlon. Collins got hooked on triathlons in high school and recently accomplished an Ironman. Steinweg began doing triathlons during college and completed the Boston Marathon in 2018. The two are planning a May 2020 wedding. See Lifecycles pg 14

Starting in 2020, the Pennsylvania Food Code will require that the person in charge of a food service operation be a certified food protection manager, and such a person must be on-site at all times during operating hours. That means at least one employee on each shift must become certified. To help food establishments meet this requirement, Penn State Extension will offer the ServSafe Food Safety Manager Course at many locations across the state. Participants will learn how to prevent contamination of food by properly receiving, storing, preparing, cooking, cooling, and serving the food, as well as proper methods of sanitizing food service facilities. After completing the course and passing the multiple-choice exam with a 75% or higher score, participants will receive a ServSafe Food Protection Manager certificate. This certification may be used for five years. Penn State Extension will hold a ServSafe Food Safety Manager Course at the Lancaster Extension in the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, on Thursday, July 18, from 5 to 9 p.m. and Thursday, July 25, from 5 to 9 p.m. The certification exam will be held on Thursday, Aug. 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. A daytime course will be held on Monday, July 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Monday, Aug. 5, from 9 to 11 a.m. The certification exam will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 5. The course fee includes the most recent edition of the ServSafe Manager book, exam, answer sheet, and learning materials. For further information about the course, readers may contact Stacy Reed at 717-394-6851. Registrations can be made by visiting https://extension.psu.edu/servsafe or by calling 877-345-0691.
