On a corner in Akron, where Main Street and Route 272 intersect, a small building is home to Bible Visuals International (BVI). The organization, which was founded nearly 60 years ago by area resident Helen Odenwelder, meets needs around the world for visual teaching materials about God. Tom Luttmann, executive director of BVI, explained that the organization has endeavored to bring the Bible to children and adults in three ways. “We have visualized Bible lessons, which we are updating with a colorization process; visualized biographies of missionaries and other Christians from different eras, and visualized songs for children to sing and (take part in)

worship together,” said Luttmann. BVI held its 59th anniversary banquet, with a gathering of nearly 300 attendees, on May 10. Tim Keesee, executive director with Frontline Missions International, served as keynote speaker. Frontline is an organization known for taking the Gospel into difficult regions of the world. The choice of Keesee as speaker was appropriate, as BVI began when Odenwelder was directing Child Evangelism Fellowship outreaches and searching for a publishing ministry to supply the needs of local clubs. “(BVI) started supplying local needs for Bible clubs that were hosted in people’s backyards,” explained Luttmann. “It’s a ministry that grew in scope with Helen’s vision to supply materials not just locally but internationally.” Updating materials that were created some years ago has been an important See BVI pg 6

Thousands gather at a Bible study held in India by Sam Gunti, a partner of Bible Visuals International (BVI), which is located in Akron. Gunti uses BVI materials, and his work is one example of how the ministry reaches out to spread the Gospel to all nations.

GOTR Chooses Winner Of Second Ellen Award By Ann Mead Ash

Four days after being named 2018 recipient of the Shining Light Ellen Coach Award by Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster, Lisa Wood, special education teacher at George Washington Elementary School in Lancaster, was still processing the experience. “I am still trying to find the words to express how honored I am,” said Wood. “I am still floating.” Wood received the award at a special event hosted by GOTR at The Inn at Leola Village on the evening of May 31. There is a saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Maryanne O’Neill and Emmie Romberger, who are both staff members with Safe Families for Children, a program of Bethany Christian Services (BCS), believe this expression to be true. Safe Families is a ministry that helps parents experiencing a crisis by providing a Christian host family to care for their children until they can be reunited. “We are the preventative service, which saves funds,” explained Romberger, who added that the central Pennsylvania chapter has a 97 percent See Safe Families pg 10

The Strasburg Area Sertoma Club will host two picnics for those wanting to find out more about the service club and to meet current club members. The informal picnics will be held on Wednesdays, July 18 and Aug. 15, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the pavilion at the Strasburg Community Park, Precision Avenue, Strasburg. Sertoma is a combination of the words “Service to Mankind.” The Strasburg Area Sertoma Club, chartered more than 20 years ago, is one of hundreds of such clubs across the nation that are unified with the purpose of serving their respective communities and improving the quality of life for local folks in need. Members of the Strasburg Area Sertoma Club typically meet for a casual dinner once a month and raise funds by making and selling subs and helping to direct guests to parking at the Strasburg Rail Road Company’s Day Out With Thomas the Tank Engine. Since the club’s inception, the majority of the funds raised by the Strasburg Sertomans annually is used to help maintain the Strasburg Community Park. In addition, the group has contributed to many other local nonprofit entities such as the Strasburg-Heisler Library, the Strasburg Scout House, Santa’s Helpers, and the Strasburg Cemetery. The club also sponsors scholarships for Lampeter-Strasburg graduates who have communication disorders or who are going to college to help those with hearing or speech challenges. One major contribution made to the community is the organization and implementation of the annual Memorial Day Parade in Strasburg. The proceeds from poppy sales at the parade are donated to local veterans organizations. “This is a great organization for someone who is not interested in getting a lot of public acclamation,” said Strasburg Area Sertoma Club president Lynda Houck. “We are not about formalities and attending endless

that chose Wood from more than 60 nominees. According to Johnson, coaches can be nominated by fellow coaches, principals, staff members, colleagues, spouses, family members, friends, parents, and the girls who make up the GOTR teams. Wood’s relationship with GOTR began

in 2012 when she started helping to coach Team Empowered, composed of girls in the School District of Lancaster with physical and intellectual disabilities. “Seeing the change in the girls was really inspiring,” said Wood. “I wanted to be part of that.” In 2015, Wood began coaching at Washington. During the spring season, the two Washington teams boasted a

total of 33 girls. “I rallied the girls by taking them to my classroom, and I told them about (GOTR) and showed them videos,” said Wood of the enrollment. “The girls wanted to be part of this amazing thing.” One of those girls, Alashana Ramos, nominated Wood for the Ellen Award. Ramos had tragically lost a cousin this year, and she wrote about how Wood was there for her during that difficult

Wood has chosen the Washington Elementary TEAM mentor partnership program. She will donate her winnings to that program through the Lancaster Education Foundation. Wood said she has been especially impressed with components of the GOTR curriculum. “(Understanding) empathy is a huge strategy in the (GOTR) toolbox,” she said. “How to make a friend and how to be a good friend is another great lesson.” Wood also lauded the requirement that teams complete a community impact project. “Our community impact project (involved) a third-grader who was severely burned the day after Christmas,” said Wood. “Our girls decided to put together a sunshine basket for her.” After reaching out to the child’s parents, the coaches learned that the girl would need bedding and that she loves unicorns. “The teams held a flower sale and raised $305 that went toward buying new things for her bedroom in the unicorn theme,” said Wood. “We got bedding, pillows, and wall decals.” Johnson noted that when Ellen, who

Lancaster County community members were sworn in by the Hon. Jeffrey Reich as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers on May 31 in the ballroom at Emerald Foundation Community Campus in Lancaster. The new volunteers join more than 200 others who have been trained and are advocating for foster children in the county’s dependency court system. CASA volunteers help to ensure that the children’s needs are recognized and best interests are considered both in the courtroom and in the community. CASA of Lancaster County trains volunteers to be qualified, compassionate advocates to fight for and protect a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with dignity

Weaver, Lititz; Ashley Brown, Lancaster; Marshall Fischer, Lancaster; and Rick Oppenheimer, Lancaster. The next available advocate training session for CASA of Lancaster County will begin in August. For more information about becoming a CASA volunteer, readers may call 717-208-3280 or email casa@casalancaster.org.

BVI from pg 1

help in accomplishing that feat is being provided by Sam Gunti, who runs large Bible camps - reaching as many as 18,000 children in a camp - in India. BVI had worked with Gunti to translate and print materials for his gatherings, and Gunti decided to return the favor. During a visit to BVI a few years ago, Gunti brought a thumb drive of updated BVI materials in full color. “It would have cost us quite a bit (to update those materials, so Gunti’s gift) has provided a good foundation, Luttmann noted. Locally, BVI has worked with Bible2School, a Manheim-based mentorship program that offers free, weekly Bible elective classes for public school students in several Lancaster County school districts. “(Bible2School) is growing, and they needed more visuals to go with their curriculum, said Luttmann. “It would be an expensive process (for Bible2School) to have new illustrations put together, (so) we looked through our curriculum and found visuals that would match their lessons. Luttmann said BVI is in the process of transforming offerings to give more options to those who need them. “We have great resources, but they don’t have to be in just (one) format, Luttmann said. “There’s a new generation of children and ministry workers who know more about technology, and they are looking for resources they can download or put on a tablet. BVI is working to make resources available digitally and as downloads, and Luttmann is excited to see where the materials are being utilized. “There are huge opportunities in technology to get resources to ministry partners. In addition to special licensing agreements that allow for the use of materials by others, Luttmann described another opportunity that came through an online retailer that offers on-demand printing so that individuals in other countries can have copies of BVI materials printed closer to home. Gordon Denlinger, who serves as treasurer for the organization, called BVI a hidden gem and noted that volunteers are needed to serve the organization in a variety of capacities. “It doesn’t get any better than helping children see Jesus and come to know Him in a faith way, he said. “We want to make sure the Gospel is being presented. BVI, a nonprofit organization located at 650 Main St., Akron, is overseen by a nine-member board. Shoe-Fly 5 from pg 1

Heather Smith, director of the ELANCO Library, has long been a runner, but she has never directed a race, until now. “I am a little disappointed that I won’t be actually running (the Shoe-Fly), because I will be organizing the race,” said Smith. Despite wishing she could also run the race, Smith is excited to be putting together the 2018 Shoe-Fly because last year she wanted to run the race and learned that it was not scheduled. In 2017, Smith was hoping to run the trifecta, then organized by the Garden Spot Cross Country Booster Club. The trifecta included the Farmers 5K, held each April; the Shoe-Fly 5 held during Terre Hill Days; and the Ox Trot, held during

Bowmansville Days. “I couldn’t find registration for the Shoe-Fly,” said Smith. “I learned that the booster club would only be holding the Farmers 5K.” Smith also learned that Christian Taylor, husband of Andi Taylor, president of the Friends of the ELANCO Library, had become the race director for the 2017 Ox Trot. “Christian said, ‘Heather, you could (direct the ShoeFly) as a fundraiser for the library.’” Smith took his words to heart, and the first Shoe-Fly 5 presented by the ELANCO Library will be held on Saturday, July 21, beginning at 8 a.m. The run will step off from the Terre Hill Community Center, 131 W. Main St., Terre Hill, adjacent to the Terre Hill Park. Packet pickup and registration on the day of the event will take place from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. Parking and restroom facilities will be available at the park. Smith said the Shoe-Fly course, which

will be the same as it was in the past, is challenging because it is hilly, and the weather tends to be warm at the time of year it is held. The 5-miler offers a variety of hills cutting through Lancaster County farmland. The first mile is fairly flat. The second mile has the first notable hill, with the second climb occurring at about 3.5 miles. Those climbs are followed by a final flat mile through town. Because of the steep inclines, water stations will be strategically placed along the route. Refreshments will be available after the race. In addition, the Terre Hill Days committee will hold an a la carte breakfast at the park pavilion beginning at 9 a.m. that day. The race will offer prizes to the first three male and female runners to cross the finish line. Prizes will also be given to male and female runners who finish first through third in six age groups, including 19 and under, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, and 60 and over. Runners who register by Friday, July 13, will receive a T-shirt and a discount. Registration via www.active.com, which will include a nominal fee, will close on July 13. Readers may also register by downloading a form from www.elancolibrary.org or picking one up at the library. Those who register before race day will receive a discount. Smith hopes to see 50 to 100 runners take part in this year’s race. At 10 a.m., families are invited to the Terre Hill Park for a free Story Walk involving a number of consecutive story stations. “The Story Walk will be an approximately 1-mile walk through the park,” said Smith, who added that Carla Castro, assistant director and youth services librarian, will lead the walk. “Stations will have printed out pages from a story book, and we will read each page and (complete) the story as we walk,” explained Smith. The run will take place on the third day of Terre Hill Days, an annual event held in the Terre Hill Park that includes live music, food, rides, and games. Terre Hill Days will run from Thursday, July 19, through Sunday, July 22.

return-to-family rate. According to O’Neill, the program is much less costly than utilizing the foster care system. To help raise funds to support the work of Safe Families, BCS will hold a golf tournament on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Foxchase Golf Club, 300 Stevens Road, Stevens. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. A shotgun start will be held at 12:30 p.m., and the dinner and prize presentation will start at 5:30 p.m. Contests will include a hickory stick drive and cumulative par 3 greenies, among others. Sponsorship opportunities for the event are available. Interested individuals may register at www.bethany.org/ Lancaster/Events. Readers may also register by calling 717-399-3213 or emailing driddell@bethany.org. According to Romberger, Safe Families is a national organization that started 15 years ago. The local chapter opened in Dauphin County in 2011, and the Lancaster branch began serving clients about five years ago. The central Pennsylvania region includes York and Lebanon counties, offering about 55 host families within the chapter. “We have really seen the program grow in terms of volunteers and those utilizing the service,” said Romberger. “We will work with any parent who is in crisis.” According to Romberger, advantages to families who benefit from the service are many. “The parent gains an additional support network in the host family, and they can handle the crisis without their children being involved,” said Romberger. “(This can) ultimately stabilize the family.” In addition, parents retain full custody of their children, who stay with screened and trained host families. The organization works closely with all parties involved to provide support until the crisis has passed, an average of 45 days. A number of different types of issues may bring a client to Safe Families. “It’s a different situation every time,” said Romberger. “It could be homelessness, hospitalization, or incarceration, but the underlying issue is a lack of a support network.” Romberger added that for a single mother, the birth of a second child is often a time when help is needed, and O’Neill added that when a mother is undergoing treatment for an illness, such as cancer, Safe Families can often help. O’Neill and Romberger described a situation where a client was incarcerated when she gave birth. “The hospital social worker called us, and we started hosting the baby right out of the hospital when he was (only) four days old,” said Romberger, explaining that the host mother took the baby to wellness checkups and brought him to see his birth mother whenever visitation was possible. After the birth mother was released, the host mother continued to have a relationship with her, helping to ease the new mother through issues that can be overwhelming, such as sleeping schedules. “It was a good transition,” said O’Neill, who noted that the birth mother called the host mother the first time the baby was ill. “When (the birth mother was) reunited (with the baby, the host mother gave her) a picture book of all the things they had done together,” O’Neill added. Referrals come from a number of sources, and many clients call Safe Families themselves. “We call people back within 24 hours,” noted Romberger. O’Neill noted that the organization is actively seeking to network with area churches for a variety of reasons. “We are looking to engage with new churches,” she noted. “That’s where we get our partners from.” To learn more about Safe Families, visit www.safe-families.org or call 717-238-3549.

To ensure that families with nutritional needs have access to fresh fruits and vegetables, the Community Action Partnership announced that the agency’s WIC (Women, Infants and Children) locations will distribute farmers’ market vouchers to WIC customers through the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP), which helps ensure good health for mothers and children and support both community farmers’ markets and Pennsylvania farmers. FMNP provides qualifying WIC customers with $20 in vouchers to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at farmers’ markets through Friday, Nov. 30. Pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women and children ages 1 to 5 are eligible. WIC nutrition staff distribute the vouchers to WIC customers along with nutrition education emphasizing the importance of eating fresh fruits and vegetables and a list of participating farmers’ markets in the area. The FMNP is sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. Across the Commonwealth, more than 1,000 farmers benefit from the program. Information about WIC is available by calling 717-509-3686 or visiting www.caplanc.org.

Two Diverse Trios To Perform In Strasburg Concert The second of five free concerts in the Sounds of Strasburg series will take place at the Strasburg Community Park on Saturday, July 14, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The open-air concert, which will be held in the park’s amphitheater, will feature local

bands Featherburn and The Ultramarines. Featherburn will open the evening’s performances. This will be the band’s second gig at the park; the dynamic group was a hit when it performed there last year. Featherburn is a trio led by Strasburg

resident John “Milo” Milosich, who plays accordion and guitar and sings. Tom Doorly is the bassist, and James Munster plays guitar. “Our visitors loved their quirky, accordion-powered, theatrical folk, punk, and eastern European rock show,” shared Dale Kaufman,

president of the Strasburg Community Parks Foundation. “Their show will be sure to please as it will be a high energy, cosmic folkromp, party-starting set.” The Ultramarines will be the second act of the night. “We are very excited to bring The

Ultramarines to Strasburg, especially since James (Wolpert) grew up in Strasburg and many here rooted for him when he was a semifinalist on NBC-TV’s fifth season of ‘The Voice,’” Kaufman said. Wolpert is a singer-songwriter and guitarist, and he is joined by drummer Aaron Shiflet and

bassist Dustin Cain. “You’ll hear this talented trio merge psychedelic, punk, surf, and blues influences into a dynamic sound that will surely create a diverse live performance for our town,” Kaufman remarked. Concert guests are advised to bring blankets and lawn chairs for

Mom’s House Receives Grant The Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded Mom’s House of Lancaster a $6,700 grant to support family literacy. This local grant award is part of more than $8.3 million in grants awarded to more than 1,000 schools, nonprofits, and organizations across the 44 states that Dollar General serves. With help from the grant, Mom’s House impacts the lives of the community by starting with the very basics of education, the fundamentals, and growing from there. Mom’s House believes that it is possible to respect each parent in a way that strengthens the desire to learn and pass that trait down to their children. Mom’s House believes that all parents have the right to resources to raise their children in conditions of dignity and financial independence and it is the only organization in Lancaster County that provides free child care services to low-income single parents enrolled in school full-time. The goal of Mom’s House is to empower these single parents to break out of the cycle of poverty and raise their families in financial independence.
