White Horse Fire Company Schedules Open House By Ann Mead Ash
“Ever wonder what it’s like to be a firefighter?” reads the heading on the flyer White Horse Fire and Ambulance Company 49 is handing out to invite area residents to a special open house at the station, 111 White Horse Road, Gap, on Saturday, July 20. The event will open at 9 a.m. with an introduction. Organizers plan to have a fire company representative and a Salisbury Township representative speak at the gathering. They also hope to have Pennsylvania State Police on hand and also to hold a K9 demonstration. Tables and displays will be set up with handouts for children and adults. “We will have a fire prevention table and a recruitment table, and EMS (emergency medical services) will have a table,” noted fire company member Sam Ebersole. The fire company’s four

A Camp Experience With Purpose By Ann Mead Ash
Jennifer Eaton, manager of youth services with VisionCorps of Lancaster, laid out the rules early for the campers who took part in Camp Cool from June 17 to 21. The campers, each of whom has a vision impairment, were told that they were not allowed to come to Eaton and say, “I can’t (do something).” “They could say, ‘I need help’ or ‘I’m scared to do this,’” said Eaton. The idea behind the banned phrase was to encourage the 8- to 12-year-old students from Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties to creatively utilize the expanded core curriculum that camp See Camp Cool pg 7

“A Night of Gospel Music,” featuring the group Heaven 4 Shore, will be held on the ballfield at Woodcrest Retreat Center, 225 Woodcrest Road, Ephrata, on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m. Funds raised by the event will help lower camping costs for children who take part in Woodcrest’s summer programs. According to Cliff Martin, executive director at Woodcrest Retreat, Heaven 4 Shore will be appearing at Woodcrest for the first time. “(Heaven 4 Shore plays) good four-part harmony gospel quartet music, (which is) always appreciated,” noted Martin. “They have the desire to share the message of (the) Gospel in song.” The group, which began making music in 1993, has traveled many miles over the years singing Southern gospel songs. The group formed with a passion to share how God’s love and forgiveness are given freely when the gift of Christ is accepted. Heaven 4 Shore members have long held to a commitment to doing the best possible job every time they sing and trusting the Lord to do the rest. Along with the concert, a chicken barbecue meal, featuring a leg and thigh, a baked potato, baked beans, a bun, coleslaw, a baked item, and a beverage, will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Woodcrest Retreat dining hall. “Come and enjoy a meal out,” invited Martin, who added that following the meal, attendees can relax in the outdoors in their favorite lawn chair while listening to the concert. Meal reservations, which are required to attend the barbecue,

can be made by calling 717-7382233. In the case of inclement weather, the concert will be held at Hinkletown Mennonite Church, 2031 Division Highway, Ephrata. Camping, by reservation, is also available for families that want to enjoy a full weekend at Woodcrest. “A family can … enjoy spending time by the campfire, swimming, (using the) waterslide, and (taking part in other) recreation, (along with) the Saturday meal and concert,” explained Martin. All families that send their children to Woodcrest will benefit from the fundraiser. Woodcrest is a nonprofit organization that provides yearly summer camp experiences for more than 1,400 children on 110 acres of woodland. The organization hopes to see up to 300 people attend the event and to raise $3,000 from the meal and concert.

ed. All of the activities the campers participated in helped them to develop in these areas. On June 17, the campers journeyed to Triangle Therapeutic Riding, which is in Reinholds and is overseen by Laura Rutledge. “(Horseback riding is) a great recreational activity for children with vision loss (because of) the sensory input, the connection with the animal, and the sense of independence they get from riding,” said Eaton. “The (campers) think they are here just to play with the horse, but it’s so much more than that.” Camp Cool also included a

kayaking trip to Indiantown Gap, where the group worked with Team River Runner in a program that was designed for veterans. Camp leaders began working to bolster social confidence with ice breaker games on the first day of camp. “We will work on socialization all week,” said Eaton, who noted that a train ride to Harrisburg was on the agenda to promote use of public transportation. “We will visit the State Museum, tour the Capitol, and ride the riverboat cruise, and … they will experience what it’s like to call for an Uber.” Eaton noted that visionimpaired campers can utilize a smartphone using VoiceOver. The campers also shopped for groceries. “(Campers received) a list of what they need to purchase, and they needed to locate the items within the store,” said Eaton, explaining that they planned to use Aira, a new technology available in certain public locations. “(Campers) can call in and get a live person who uses the camera on the phone to guide them through the grocery store,” explained Eaton, who added that campers would be encouraged to learn the basic layout and locations of types of food in grocery stores and to not shy away from asking clerks for help. During lunch at Wegman’s, campers were required to ask for large print and braille menus at the café. Eaton noted that money management would be tested. “Each (camper) will have cash and have to know what denomination they are handing the clerk,” she said, noting that there are apps available to help those with very limited vision. Working to develop cooking skills was part of the plan as well. “(Campers) will prepare desserts for Friday when volunteers from United Way will help beautify our York office space by doing gardening,” said Eaton. “(Campers) will plant flowers and help with weeding and then serve desserts they have created to the volunteers as refreshments.” Readers who would like more information about VisionCorps may visit www.visioncorps.net or call 717-291-5951, ext. 4118.

From there, we go through Little Britain, Quarryville, and Nickel Mines past Brandon’s grave, where the riders go slowly in tribute to Brandon.” The 107-mile ride will end back at Gap Fire Hall, where the riders will be given a lunch of pulled pork, chicken barbecue, homemade baked beans, potato salad and dessert. Jill noted that corporate sponsors contribute to the ride and that local fire companies and police departments are on hand to ensure the riders’ safety. Residents of area neighborhoods are welcome to cheer on the riders as they pass by. “People cheer when we leave Gap. We come through Parkesburg around 11:15 a.m. and Cochranville close to 11:30 a.m.,” Jill noted. “I speak to the Lionville Middle School Patriots Club, and every year there are a few teachers and students who come out and wave
their flags when we go down Route 113.” She noted that the ride has grown through the years. “The first year there were 80 bikes; we have had as many as 280 bikes. We usually raise between $8,000 and $10,000,” said Jill, adding that Brandon’s fellow service members travel from as far away as Spokane, Wash., and Tulsa, Okla., to join the ride. The scholarships are intended to finance the cost of items that are not provided by the military. “The purpose is to help other men and women who are carrying Brandon’s torch,” said Jill. “They can use the (scholarship money) for things the military requires but doesn’t supply or use it to come home to visit their family. They don’t get free trips home. If it gets them home one time, it’s worth it.” For more information about Brandon and the ride, readers may visit at www.cplbrandon hardy.com.

Brandon, a graduate of the Octorara Area School District, was killed in 2006 in Al Anbar, Iraq. “Warren (Brandon’s father) and I decided the day we got the terrible news that we needed to honor Brandon and glorify God through this tragedy,” said Jill, who is the school board and superintendent secretary for the Octorara Area School District. “We do that by giving $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors who are entering the military. To date, we have awarded $112,000 in scholarships. I also do speaking engagements to tell Brandon’s story so others can understand his sacrifice.” The ride, which will take place rain or shine, will leave Gap Fire Hall and proceed down Route 30 to Route 113 to Route 100 to the Chester Springs Harley-Davidson, where participants will be treated to soft pretzels and water. From there, the ride will proceed to Route 82, then to Route 322 and then to Route 10. “ When we come through Parkesburg and Cochranville, the fire companies are out with flags flying and sirens blaring. initiative,” said Leckow of the effort that brings together SPC, the local arm of the U.S. Veterans Affairs, the West Lampeter Police Department, and Morr’s Shooting Range and Gun Shop. SPC, a creation of MHALC, is working in partnership with other local entities to put gun lock kits in the hands of each person who purchases a gun in hopes of preventing both suicides and unintentional deaths by firearm. Leckow explained that the time of purchase is a crucial moment. “(If the clerk says,) ‘We are trying to prevent suicide by firearm, and we’d like you to accept this (free) lock’ … at that possible point of interaction that may … dissuade someone having mental health issues (from using) a firearm against themself,” explained Leckow. Leckow noted that MHALC would like to see gun shop owners and personnel receive QPR Suicide Prevention Training. QPR stands for “Question Persuade Refer.” Training will teach personnel to recognize warning signs that an individual is in suicide crisis and to ask questions and refer that person for help. MHALC will hold training sessions in the organization’s Lancaster County office, 245 Butler Ave., Suite 203, Lancaster, from 1 to 4 p.m. on Fridays, Aug. 2, Oct. 4, and Dec. 6. Registration is required to attend. Interested individuals may call 717-3977461 to register. Leckow noted that customized and abbreviated training can be arranged as well. Beginning Thursday, Aug. 1, gun lock kits will be available at the MHALC office upon request to mha@mhalancast er.org. The kits, which can be given out at time of purchase, include the gun lock, a safety booklet, two wallet cards - one specifically aimed at veterans and a second from Lancaster County Crisis Intervention, and a flyer about the program. The flyer offers statistics about suicides by veterans, which currently number more than 20 per day, along with Lancaster County numbers, including the number of deaths that could have been avoided locally through education, set at 61. In September, the SPC meeting, scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 26, at noon, will be devoted to a discussion of veteran suicide and veteran suicide prevention. Presenters for the evening will be Robert Anderson, veteran outreach specialist, and John Lucas, suicide prevention senior social worker, from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. Further details on the meeting may be found at www.stopsuicidelancaster.org/ awareness-and-events.

The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, a Lancaster County-based provider of pediatric therapy services, reached the milestone it was aiming for when the Schreiber Endowment Fund surpassed $1 million. Jaime Jackson (right), partner at Atlee Hall, a Lancaster-based law firm, made a $10,000 donation in June to put Schreiber over its goal. Jackson and James DeBord (left), Schreiber president, visited the infant room at the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development on July 2 to mark the achievement. A fundraising drive, called the Atlee Hall Drive to $1 Million Challenge, helped raise more than $200,000 for the endowment in the past six months. The law firm provided the initial gift in the drive, which kicked off in January. The Schreiber Endowment Fund is part of the organization’s strategy to strengthen its long-term financial position. Cadets who are 16 years or older may be trained and certified to use the drones as technicians or observers. “(The) drones will be used for emergency services, and they don’t go beyond our visual line of sight,” explained Broad. Jerome “Pepper” Broad, deputy commander with Jesse Jones Composite Squadron 304 of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), which meets regularly at the Lancaster Municipal Airport, is happy to expound on the origins of the organization. “(CAP) started during World War II,” said Broad, who added that the first members were coastal watchers, scanning both the east and west coasts of the U.S. for enemy submarines. CAP, which is an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, was officially established in December of 1941. Squadron 304, one of nearly 1,500 operating nationwide, is part of the 31st Wing, which is the Pennsylvania division of CAP. The 31st Wing was the second in the nation to become active. Nationally, the organization includes 58,000 senior members those age 21 and over - and youth members - people ages 12 to 20. The weekly cadet program focuses on military leadership, character development, and physical fitness. Greg Sollenberger, who serves as aerospace education officer for the squadron, said that the participating cadets are also offered a monthly aerospace class that includes lessons ranging from rocketry to orientation flights. “Each cadet builds a rocket from a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) kit,” said Sollenberger, who discusses a range of aerospacerelated topics with the cadets. Two Lancaster County rescue groups, Furever Home Adoption Center and the Pet Pantry, are once again partnering to raise funds and awareness for homeless animals, expand the Pet Food Bank Program, and offer low-cost spay/neuter/vaccination programs and low-cost mobile veterinary clinics and discounted veterinary services for animals. The fifth annual Summer Shopping Fair will be held on Saturday, July 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The vendor and craft fair will include more than 100 local businesses, unique crafters, vendors, food, and more. This free, familyfriendly, pet-friendly event will be held inside, rain or shine. The first 100 adult attendees will receive a free goodie bag filled with magazines, special offers, coupons, samples, and more. Food and supply donations are being requested for both rescue groups. Dry cat and dog food in any brand or size is especially needed, as well as cleaning supplies such as bleach, paper towels, toilet paper, and more. For each donation given at the event, donors will be given a free ticket for a giveaway drawing. A variety of sponsorship opportunities are available. For more information, readers may contact Tina at flippers1@aol.com. Furever Home and the Pet Pantry are also sponsoring a New Jersey beach bus trip to Wildwood or Cape May for the day on Saturday, July 27. The bus will stop at Wildwood for those wishing to disembark and spend the day in Wildwood instead of Cape May. All proceeds from the trip will benefit Furever Home and the Pet Pantry. For more event details, readers may contact Tina at flippers1@aol.com or 717-8088108 or visit www.petpantrylc.org.
